The Morning Report 2/17/17

GunnyTrump.jpg

Good morning, kids. Yesterday's press conference was a tour de force and one that has been a long time coming. "Professional journalism" might very well have been so thoroughly de-pantsed that perhaps now even LIV Americans might start looking at them with a lot less trust. And that is a good thing, indeed. It also gives a boost to PDT in a week that started off kind of rough, mostly because of the propaganda being pumped out by the very same people taken to the woodshed yesterday. So all in all, week 4 ends on a high note, with one of his signature public rallies still in the offing in Melbourne, FL tomorrow. That said, there are a few down notes in the links and a few positive ones as well. Have a better one and remain blessed.

5 Trump could do wonders for draining the swamp with one little EO revocation.

Revoke the Kennedy-era EO that allowed Federal workers to unionize.

Every Union employee would be out on their ass.

8 When these media aholes act like the 1st Amendment is in jeopardy when Trump says mean things about them, I can't help but think about how many of them seem to think Milo has it coming when he's shut down.

I'm supposed to be outraged about the "disrespect" shown them?

They can go to hell.

President
Trump again publicly invoked Chicago violence before a national
audience, this time speaking of "two Chicagos" during a wide-ranging
news conference in the White House's East Room.

How dare he.....2 dead, 3 shot yesterday, kind of a light day, but warmer weekend coming.

13 Morning, all!

Watching Jake Tapper after that presser was hilarious - he was doing his best to claim that it's the little people whom Trump offended - the soldeir in the middle east, the guy who's trying to hold on to his job in some red state (forget which one he mentioned) blah blah blah.

No, Jake, none of your cliched normal people give a sh#t that the press got dressed down by Trump. In fact, if they noticed it at all they were tickled by it.
Always love when these self-important, arrogant blowhards claim to be one with the people, when they spend every other moment claiming they are DC VIPs.

#GMTA... i've said that more than once.

another good idea would be a blanket EO: "all EOs issued between 1201 Jan 20th 2009 and 1200 Jan 20th 2017 are null and void. "

wipe all that shit out in one fell swoop.

Then we need to lean on them to repeal it.

It'd be the easiest large-scale swamp draining effort that could ever be done.

There's a perfectly valid reason for ending unionization of Federal employees, too: One of the interested parties, the taxpayer, is never represented during contract negotiations.

40 Zuckerburg thinks he is going to bring the world together with Facebook or something? I remember hearing that BS in the 90's when the internet stared tacking off. Now that we could all easily communicate we would, for some reason, get along better. Descendants of slaves and descendant of slave-owners would drop their differences and have a big group hug.

Well, they were right, people can now communicate easier than ever. Especially their differences of opinion and worldview. I have come to the conclusion of the approximately 5.7 x 10^18 opinion pieces, blog posts, columns, rants, pleads, commentary, analysis, snark etc... posted the past 20 year or so, not one mind has been changed by them.

Agreed. Vincent D'Onofrio packed on like 60 pounds to do that role, but because Kubrick works so ponderously slow (minimum 30 takes a shot), he had to keep the weight on. I didn't buy the fact that he was a lard ass at the end of the sequence and not rock hard. He would've had to have shot the ending first with him thin, waited until he gained the weight and then shot the rest of the picture. I think that's how they shot Hanks in "Castaway" or was it the other way around?

100 Incredibly, Berkeley's teams and one other team from California who made the cut, will not attend the National Debate Tournament. That is because the state of California has banned all university related personnel from traveling to four states around the nation: Kansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Mississippi, on the specious grounds that these states have all passed "anti-LGBT legislation."

California is certainly acting like they want to secede. They refuse to allow outsiders (like Milo) into CA to express alternate viewpoints, and they refuse to allow their own citizens to travel abroad to Kansas, lest they be exposed to dangerous ideas.

They are becoming like Saudi Arabia. If you travel there and are caught with a bible, you can be executed, because it contains crimethink. CA is becoming the world's first secular theocracy.

124 This is the silent actress Priscilla Bonner:

http://tinyurl.com/j3ndezt

She was an Army brat and spent much of her early life traveling with her father to various posts. While in Chicago, she picked up the phone one day to find Photoplay magazine on the other end of the line, asking her to come in for some photographs. She realized at once that the magazine had called the wrong number, but decided to seize the lucky break anyway. She went down to Photoplay's office, where they, intrigued by both her chutzpah and looks, took a few portraits of her and sent them off to California studios.

She eventually signed with MGM, appearing during her screen career with such silent legends as Lon Chaney, Colleen Moore, Clara Bow and Harry Langdon. She even ended up as one of the few actresses to win a lawsuit against Warner Brothers, suing them for dropping her as leading lady in 1926s The Sea Beast (an adaptation of Moby-Dick.

You can see her in action in 1925s The Red Kimona, a "social conscience" film based on a true prostitution scandal in 1917 New Orleans:

http://tinyurl.com/z8g85t3

And you can see her as Clara Bow's sick roommate Molly in 1927s It:

http://tinyurl.com/huufow3

(she's on the left. Bow is on the right, with leading man Antonio Moreno in between)

Why do I mention her? Because she was born on this day in 1899. . .and today is also my birthday (though I'm not nearly as old).

I was in 10 years and the only base I was ever stationed at with an active runway was MacDill and it didn't even have an active Wing. The reserves/National Guard used it. CENTCOM/SOCOM used it frequently. My little outfit got lots of use out of it (JCSE). My first assignment was a 2 story building in a cornfield in Nebraska and the second one didn't have an airfield either (well it did in WWII), RAF Croughton.

Thank you (and thanks to all the Horde for birthday wishes!).

No, I don't think I'll watch it; neither Crawford nor Davis are faves of mine, and having seen the teaser for it, it reminds me of the terrible 1985 TV movie Malice in Wonderland, with Elizabeth Taylor as Tinseltown gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.

BTW, Hopper actually appeared in a few silent films before turning to the poison pen, but her biggest role was probably co-starring with William Haines in 1931s A Tailor Made Man.

Here she is as a starlet. She's not my type by a long shot, but there's something very louche about her smile which turns me on for some reason:

Not that much different (and in many ways not different at all) than Departments like Education and HHS.

The past 8 years have seen a significant increase in left leaning leadership in DoD. It is very real to say there has been a purging of conservatives in the Department.

199 A guy on the radio this morning had a good take on the press conference.

He pointed out that while the media is complaining about being insulted, they are missing the real story....that Trump is getting praise for his Labor sec nomination from...the unions. That his reversing anti-coal regs is getting praise from...coal states, and that includes Pennsylvania.

In other words, the media is focused on how they are being treated rather than covering actual news. They'd rather talk about Trump the man, not what he's doing and how the midterm elections look very bleak for the Democrats.

Inside the beltway, people are aghast at this philistine. Outside the beltway, people are appreciative and applauding Trump. This can only serve to further diminish the media's supposed influence.

Oh, that's OK. Everyone to their own taste, as they say. I will admit to liking some early Crawford, in her silent Our Dancing Daughters days, but beyond that, her "character" was too brittle for my tastes. And Davis was well-known in Hollywood as a ball-buster who was just as likely to snarl, "are you done yet?" than to coo soft words of love.

And beyond that, Baby Jane has always left a sour taste in my mouth. It's Sunset Boulevard gone rancid, with none of the affection or tenderness Wilder used to soften the portrayal of a self-absorbed Norma Desmond. You do sympathize with Crawford, but the whole movie, IMO, is too self-consciously grand guignol to like.

219 Definition of Insurrection: an act or instance of rising in revolt, rebellion, or resistance against civil authority or an established government.

Based on reading the article I would say that the Obama dead enders fighting against what Mattis wants to do at the DoD qualifies as an act of resistance against civil authority.

Quite frankly its a lot more than just some people at the DoD engaging in insurrection within our government.

---------

Yes! That's exactly what I found.

I went to Wegman's and they had signs that they were sold out of three types of Trump wine, but they had a fourth, an aperatif wine, so I bought a couple bottles. I went to talk to the wine manager and asked if they would be getting more in. She said oh yes, but the winery had to bottle more because the demand was high, so they didn't know when it would be in.

There was a guy who came up behind me and said, "You talking about Trump wine? I was going to buy a case!" And I told him me too. I was THIS CLOSE to asking him if he was a Moron, but couldn't do it.

Anyhoo, that's how I feel about Sarandon.

They had red and sparkling, but had signs that they were sold out of a couple others. I bought two bottles of the red and one of the sparkling.

I asked the cashier if they would be getting more in, and she said she was sure they would since it was a good seller. I was the fourth customer she had that day that bought Trump wine, and this was at 3:30. She said they only started carrying it after the election and it sold really well.

So now I have $125 worth of Trump wine sitting here.

I was listening to a local talk radio show yesterday afternoon. A listener sent in a message to the host asking for their name not to be released, but that they worked at a local school. Elementary school, I believe. There were well over 100+ students that didn't come to class yesterday. Hispanic students. Presumably illegal. I do think that Trump could improve these pressers by adding a clown with a Nerf bat standing next to him, and when one of 'em inevitably asks a shitty question, unleash the clown to cluebat the offender.

Or hand out dunce caps to deserving reporters, that they must wear to be able to attend the conference. If they behave better after a month or so, they can get in without having to wear it.

They do need to be reminded of those questions very specifically by someone other than people on Twitter.

I prefer it if the conservative outlets that are allowed a question at a presser started off this way, "On x date, y person from z network asked President Obama how enchanted the White House made him feel. Do you think that you could answer that same question?"

414 How to boil the perfect egg:

First warm the eggs to room temperature. If you are too impatient to let them sit out that long put them in a bowl with water as hot as it will come out of your tap.

Select a pan big enough to let all the eggs lay on the bottom in a single layer. Put two inches of water in the pan and put it on the stove. Bring it to a low boil, that's just when the bubbles are coming off the bottom and going to the top, right around 180 degrees. You don't want a full rolling boil.

Using a slotted spoon, gently place the warmed eggs into the boiling water to prevent cracking the shells. Cook for right around 13 minutes, keep a close eye on them so they don't come to a full rolling boil. You may have to experiment with the time a bit to get the yolks cooked all the way through, but 13 minutes works perfectly on my electric stove near Raleigh NC.

There is a long winded scientific explanation for all of this, but basically you want the egg to cook to an internal temperature of right around 165 degrees. Much hotter than that will turn the egg yolks green and sulfurous, much cooler will make the whites tough and rubbery before the yolks get a chance to cook all the way through.

While the eggs are cooking dump out the hot water from your bowl (or get a bowl) and fill it with ice water. When the eggs are done use your slotted spoon to immediately put them into the ice water. This will make the whites expand to fill the shells and prevent huge divots where the air pockets were and will also stop the cooking process right away to prevent the yolks from getting green and sulfurous and the whites tough.

Peel and enjoy!

The mind boggles at how much they must be costing the taxpayers.

Here's an example I just saw. Go and eat breakfast or lunch with your kid. They're required to get X of Y, apparently, to meet nutrition requirements. In this case it was milk at breakfast. A table of twelve kids, and one had opened her milk. Plain and chocolate available (and everyone got chocolate), and eleven of them we're going into the trash. The lunchroom can't collect them and re-serve them. They have to pass them out, and they have to throw them away.

How many hundreds of millions of gallons of milk are being thrown away every single day? What's the cost? The same folks pushing recycling so hard have no problem with this?

Many of us hold no gratitude for Newt Gingrich, Tom Delay, and Dick Armey.

If it wasn't for those guys, Republicans would still be the minority party in DC.

470 They were like McConnell and Ryan -- just happy to be "leaders" of something, but didn't really care to be anything more.

And then that "bombthrower" Gingrich came along...

We also wouldn't have had a balanced budget at the end of the 90s.

**kisses gammie**

I once read somewhere that, if a man wanted to be well-dressed, he should buy or tailor his clothes in the style of Fred Astaire or Cary Grant.

Of course, it helps if you're as thin as Mr Austerlitz or as handsome as Mr Leach!

473 >>Ok, little help from the horde please, how in the hell do I copy, paste and open the links posted? Tired of writing them down!

On phone or computer?

On computer, highlighting and right clicking may do it.

On phone, similar, but involves holding down your finger, swiping and lots of swearing.

477 Happy Birthday, Mary PPPP!

I was always fascinated with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Both of them had the unique quality of taking over every scene they were in.

I think I would like to have a mule.

478 @463 Interesting article, thanks for posting it. I did a quick image search, but didn't find any photos of the estate in it's original form. I'd love to see some photos of that. Any suggestions?

Happy Birthday!

479 They likely have no choice. This is what you get when ideological purity is selected for rather than ability to do the job and smarts. In a world with any competition it's a loser. Works only in places like the academe and what we now call the "Deep State."

I don't know, I think we're seeing this in the business world as well, and it's really starting to affect various products and services. Political Correctness kills.

Or: load 18 extra large eggs into steamer basket, place with 1 cup water into Instant Pot. Set 4 minutes on 'Manual' pressue cook. At 54 minutes, do Quick Release, remove steamer basket of eggs and drop into sinkful of cold water.

Easiest peeling hardboiled eggs you'll ever have.

483 471,
"We also wouldn't have had a balanced budget at the end of the 90s."

The famed "Clinton economy" was Obama like until '95 when the House went Republican. That's when things started moving.

Seems like I've been waiting my whole life for something like that to happen.
It was extremely gratifying.

488 1- Hope the pup is okay. Ours once found a lizard that had been dead and rotting in a mulch pile for a few days. Definite food allergies to that sort of thing.

2- Not coming out of the house if ICE is on your street sort of tells everyone else anything they need to know, right?

489 GSGT. Hartmann reminds me of my GSGT in 1974. He was almost a clone of the FMJ character. His name was, I kid you not, Pickles. GSGT. Pickles was hard as nails and volunteered for extra tours of duty in Vietnam. I was honored to have him as my GSGT.
