Thursday Overnight Open Thread (2/16/17) 4th Monday Of The Week Edition

You still have time to help a grouch out.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

I won't say that the papers misquote me, but I sometimes wonder where Christianity would be today if some of those reporters had been Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. -Barry Goldwater

Fake news. It has been around a long time.

Quote II

To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege that was ever accorded to the human race. - Calvin Coolidge

Wouldn't it be special the saboteurs of the Trump presidency paid attention to this quote?

Quote III

In any event, the proper question isn't what a journalist thinks is relevant but what his or her audience thinks is relevant. Denying people information they would find useful because you think they shouldn't find it useful is censorship, not journalism. -Michael Kinsley

Once upon a time NBC=National Broadcasting Company. Now? NBC=Nothing But Corrections.

Clinton News Network CNN Peddlers of Fake News.

“In our case, we contended that CNN essentially made up its own standard in order to conduct an ‘apples to oranges’ comparison to support its false assertion that St. Mary’s mortality rate was 3 times higher than the national average. Accordingly, the case against CNN certainly fits the description of media-created ‘Fake News.'” said Carbone’s attorney L. Lin Wood, in a statement to LawNewz.com.

If you had the opportunity to show your political foe as an ignorant, hateful individual would you take it? Well, if you are on the left of course you won't. Adversarial journalist whimps out because of Milo. Quite the tough guy, NOT.

A journalist who was booked as a panelist on this week’s Real Time with Bill Maher has canceled his appearance after learning that Breitbart News’ Milo Yiannopoulos also will be on the show. Jeremy Scahill, who founded the self-proclaimed “adversarial journalism” site The Intercept, announced his exit on social media this afternoon.

Speaking of Hollywood, The ONT likes this actor, Robert Davi. Open letter to the Hollywood Moon Bats.

I propose that Meryl Steep, Chelsea Handler, Richard Gere, Robert DeNiro, Christoph Waltz and others lead an Oscar first: let’s do away with the rules, barriers, and tickets to the Oscars and after-parties, such as the swanky Vanity Fair party or the Weinsteins’ star-studded affair. I ask all migrants, all illegal immigrant criminals and all un-vetted refugees to converge on Hollywood to come to the Oscars and all the after-parties, even those held at the mansions or the Chateau Marmont or anywhere else. After all, we in the Hollywood community want to show all Islamic extremists that we have love in our hearts — and what better way to do that than by inviting them along on our most important night?

Repeal and replace? Repair? Or just let Obamacare die a slow and painful death?

Aetna Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Bertolini escalated his criticism of the Affordable Care Act, saying Obamacare’s markets are nearing failure as premiums climb and healthier individuals drop out.

“It is in a death spiral,” Bertolini said in a video interview with the Wall Street Journal that aired Wednesday on the newspaper’s website. He predicted that more insurers will drop out of the market for 2018, following Humana Inc.’s decision to quit Obamacare entirely for next year.

If there is a will. There is a way. Mexican drug cartels get creative on pot smuggling. Feds find one big-ass catapult.

Border Patrol agents got lucky a few days ago when they spotted several people running away from a section of border fence near Douglas, Arizona. After going to investigate, the DHS employees discovered a catapult and two giant blocks of weed. You can guess what the catapult was for.

For every action is there is an equal reaction. Poachers face immediate and lethal sanctions.

Problems with the Oroville Dam were made known years ago.

While information is still be gathered, early reports have stated that three environmental groups warned federal officials way back in 2005 that something like this could happen, and what's perhaps even more concerning is the fact that Oroville is just one of nearly 100,000 dams across the US that are in serious need of repairs.

More California silliness. Let them leave. Maybe Cuba or Venezuela will bail them out.

I hate to get too libertarian, but spending $33.1 million to hire 134 permanent positions to implement new medical marijuana laws seems unnecessary, given the longstanding robust free market in the commodity. Just walk a block on Haight Street in San Francisco to find out how robust. I will grant that the $700,000 for research on better pesticides for marijuana cultivation is a constructive expenditure, useful worldwide. Thanks, California Dude

The ONT Musical Interlude

The story behind 'Good Vibrations'.

Brian Wilson rolled tape on take one of “Good Vibrations” on February 17, 1966. Six months, four studios and $50,000 later, he finally completed his three-minute-and-thirty-nine-second symphony, pieced together from more than 90 hours of tape recorded during literally hundreds of sessions.

February 16, 1969 George Jones and Tammy Wynette married in Ringgold, Georgia, after telling others that their marriage was in August 1968. They quickly earnt the titles such as "The First Couple of Country Music," "Country's Sweethearts," and "The President and First Lady."

Before email. Before text messages. Love Letters.

Dearest Angel Girl:

...I suppose most of us are lonely in this big world, but we must fall tremendously in love to find it out. The cure is the discovery of our need for company -- I mean company in the very special sense we've come to understand since we happened to each other -- you and I. The pleasures of human experience are emptied away without that companionship -- now that I've known it; without it joy is just an unendurable as sorrow. You are my life -- my very life. Never imagine your hope approximates what you are to me. Beautiful, precious little baby -- hurry up the sun! -- make the days shorter till we meet. I love you, that's all there is to it.

No quizzes, no tests. Just a story about Math.

His program, JUMP (Junior Undiscovered Math Prodigies) Math, is being used by 15,000 kids in eight US states (it is aligned with the Common Core), more than 150,000 in Canada, and about 12,000 in Spain. The US Department of Education found it promising enough to give a $2.75 million grant in 2012 to Tracy Solomon and Rosemary Tannock, cognitive scientists at the Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto, to conduct a randomized control trial with 1,100 kids and 40 classrooms. The results, out later this year, hope to confirm previous work the two did in 2010, which showed that students from 18 classrooms using JUMP progressed twice as fast on a number of standardized math tests as those receiving standard instruction in 11 other classrooms.

Spend. Spend. Spend.

Meet Mary "Polly" Phelps. Inventor of the modern day bra.

It wasn’t until 1910 that Polly realized something important was missing from her life. She was busy one day preparing for a debutante ball when she looked in the mirror and realized she loathed the way a corset made her look. It bunched up her bodice and squished her breasts into a single, uncomfortable monobosom. In her memoir, The Passionate Years, she referred to it as “a box-like armour of whalebone and pink cordage.”

Like all great innovators before her, necessity was the mother of Polly’s invention. She grabbed a handkerchief, ribbon, and a needle, and before the party was off the ground, had fashioned herself a new undergarment: the modern bra.

Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick politely tells Roger Goodell and the NFLto eat a bag of dicks. stay out of TX politics.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told the National Football League to “get out of politics” and “not tell states what their public policy is” Wednesday after the NFL warned the state about moving forward with a transgender bathroom bill.

Just one week after the NFL held the Super Bowl in Houston, league spokesman Brian McCarthy issued a statement advising the state of Texas to carefully consider whether or not to pass Senate Bill 6, also known as the Texas Privacy Act. The bill, which was proposed in January, allows businesses to choose their own bathroom policies while prohibiting schools from allowing students to use bathrooms or locker rooms whose specified gender does not match their biological sex.

How the ctrl-Left drove me away from American liberalism.h/t DoublySymmetric

A good friend of mine, who also happens to be an outstanding author, once quipped, “If I am forced to choose a side, I choose the side which is not forcing me to choose sides.”

Seldom have I ever encountered phrasing more apt. Because that’s precisely how I feel. I’ve been feeling that way, for years now. It was not a sudden thing. It was a gradual realization. The slow clarity of an underlying sentiment, incrementally surfacing.

A good read.

24/7

I have noticed it only because Ms Kinetic, bless her soul, turns on the tv and wants to watch either GMA or Today in the morning, and her need for news includes having it on for both the local and national feeds evenings. We've no cable and so no CNN or FNC. The antenna brings us only NBC and ABC.

Whether it is Lauer or Stephanopolous in the a.m., or David Muir or Lester Holt evenings, plus whatever local twit affiliates the local feeds have behind their desks, it is all TrumpHitlerFascistLiarDisarrayTurmoil all the time. I have noted it every day since the inauguration.

It will likely never stop, no matter what. The drumbeat will get louder, the demonstrations more frequent, the sit-ins, stand-ins and lie-ins, more marches on the Capitol, more buycotts, Twitter shut-downs, more chaos.

We've not been down a road like this before. Where are we going?

248 Obvious rookie cop mistake. A veteran wouldn't have made this mistake and win the Genius Award.

++++

That's not true, actually. The officer wasn't a rookie. Had been on the force for 8 years. Also, she wasn't alone. There were multiple officers on the scene. And, they ran two drug field tests which both came back positive.

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-cop-
mistook-doughnut-glaze-for-meth-20160727-story.html

There was another story not so long ago about cops arresting someone because cops ran a drug field test on some material they found in someone's trash. Came back positive for marijuana. It was tea leaves.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-watch/wp/2016/
01/11/why-the-wet-tea-leaves-drug-raid-was-outrageous/

I say the problem is not with the individual officers. It is with these questionable drug field tests being used as probable cause, as well as the police departments that are training their officers to use them. These unreliable test kits should be banned.

261 "Day without immigrants", in addition to further obfuscating the distinction between legal and illegal immigrants (by design), is also a pointless, wasteful (naturally) stunt that won't do anything to sway anyone's opinion. For those of us who are anti-illegal immigration, it just demonstrates that illegal immigrants are prone to pulling stupid, annoying stunts.

officers. It is with these questionable drug field tests being used as
probable cause, as well as the police departments that are training
their officers to use them. These unreliable test kits should be banned.

Don't ban the kits. That way lies a regulatory nightmare. Seriously. Just make kit makers liable for the errors, and police forces liable for the use of kits without proper validation standards.

Even a veteran can make a rookie mistake. And overanalyzing a joke is always an exercise in futility.

I just was aware of the part that the drug kit played in the story from seeing it linked somewhere else. Story makes the cops look like idiots, but they followed their training. Saw something that might have been drugs, so they ran the test that's supposed to be able to tell the difference between a little rock of meth and a piece of sugar glaze.

I don't know one way or another, but I would be curious to know if that department is still using those drug kits. I bet they are. They might have switched to another brand, but that doesn't mean it would be any better.

367 Glossy Black headers can be readily found, but it's not a paint. It's a more recent development, in the ceramic coating industry.

They're listed in both the Summit and JEGS catalogs.

Also, you can usually find Glossy Black Headers near most any downtown Greyhound Bus station.

But, you don't wanna go there. Literally and figuratively.

368 Vantablack is composed of a forest of vertical tubes which are "grown". When light strikes vantablack, instead of bouncing off, it becomes trapped and is continually deflected among the tubes, eventually becoming absorbed and dissipating into heat.

I wonder if you could overwhelm it. If the light is stuck in there bouncing around until it converts to heat, what would it take to give it more light than it could handle, or does it happen so fast that you would never be able to overload it.

Gypsies, tramps and thieves
But every night all the men would come around
and lay their money down

Picked up a boy just out of Mobile
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal
I was 16, he was 21
He rode with us to Memphis
And Papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done

We'd hear it from the people of the town, they'd call us

But every night all the men would come around

--

Honestly, It wasn't a bad show, and she doesn't look bad. She sounded good, and outside of the fact that I thought it was cheezy, it was fine. I was with a friend who is a huge Cher fan (seeing Cher was on her bucket list, I thought that was so sad) and she really enjoyed it.

I see a lot of shows. A lot. Generally, most female pop stars (even those of yore, like Cher) are terrifically over-produced. It was done by the same guy who does Katy Perry's shows. So.. props, costume changes, flying over the audience, that kind of thing.

She's going to do a Vegas residency this year; I don't quite know how she's going to work every day, since she said she was going to leave the country if Trump got elected. But I'm sure she'll figure it out.

Overall, I'd say her show was about a 7 out of 10, mostly because I like her songs and she sounded good.

Usher? OMG. That show was longer than time itself. Minutes were like hours. Soooo boring.

482 RE: Vegas residencies, I'm not sure they're any better than seeing that person's show in your home arena.

There's only one reason entertainers do residencies: they're sick of touring. So they put them in smaller venue, and they do a show night after night.

But there are trade offs. You're probably going to see a much smaller production than if you were seeing it in an arena. So not as many fun bells and whistles. My guess is that ticket prices are probably going to be higher in Vegas and you'll be seeing a somewhat smaller show.

RE: Cher, she had to cancel dates in her last tour; I don't think she ever made up those dates. She has health issues.

Plus it's a top notch production. One of my all time favorite rock bands. Did you know that you can have simulated sex to the song "The Jack?" I once saw someone in the audience doing so.

2. Kid Rock is well worth the money. I worked nine of his shows two years ago. For his encore, he wears a jersey that says "Fucks Given 0" LOL. I had to explain to the guy I was working with what that meant.

3. For reasons I don't understand ,I know all of the words to the song Downtown, and I don't know why. I was really young then, and that was not the kind of music my family listened to.

538 My sis Teresa thought the world was black and white up until she was born, then the world exploded into Technicolor glory.

She also told my parents that she was going to marry a black man with blonde hair, have ten kids, and move in with my folks.

I still laugh at my dad's comment:

"Fuck that."

But she did marry a high-yella mofo (with blonde hair)
who cheated on her.

My dad, myself, and my baby bro convinced him to leave with his limbs intact.

He was a Sinbad wannabe, without the talent.

I learned about the Federal Elections Commission today, or the FEC. Interesting stuff.

It was always funny money anyways, but where does the "$1 contribution to the Federal Elections Fund" now go? Neither Shrillary nor DJT took any $$$ from them (I think) or accepted the FEC's limits, so what gives?

628 SMFH: do you VA?

i'm currently 20%, but have asked for an ortho consult from my new PCP to look at all my other injuries (knees, hips and lower spine because of my bad ankles, upper spine from some asshat of NCO strangling me in mid-air (long story: among other things he was a PCP user. [it was the early 80s in the NG])

also the right hand i burned in 83. would this trigger a review of my status, and possibly upgrade it, depending on the findings, or do i still have to request that through my VSO?

630 profile warriors:

my right ankle started to bother me about 3-4 weeks into 91/68 Q school, and when i went on sick call, i told the PA i almost didn't come in because who wants to be a candy ass.

he told me it was a good thing i had, because i had a partially torn Achilles tendon, and, had i not, and kept doing PT, it would have ruptured on me.

instead i spent the rest of my time there hobbilng along, leading the profile squad to school and back every day (i was the senior cripple, with over 8 years TIG as a SPC) instead of marching with every one else in formation.

turns out that was the senior leadership position of my medical career.

653 Thank God for Claritin

---
in case no one ever told you, you have to take Claritin pretty much every day, at least during whatever season you have issues with.

that's because, unlike older antihistamines (Benadryl, chlorpheneramine, etc), it does not go in and actively displace whatever is on the trigger points on the blast cells, which is what causes the allergic reaction.

that's a trade off for it being non-drowsy. the key thing to do is to make sure you take it the same time every day while you need it, so the blood concentration stays steady. if you start getting breakthrough, or you are late in taking it, take a regular anti-histamine with it, so it can go in, clear the cells and make room for the loratadine to change places later.

i spent two weeks there... with the Evac Hospital shitbirds. (just before Iraq invaded) we went through DEPMEDS training, which, at the time, was state of the art shit. (another reason we should have deployed to the war zone)

real garden spot, like most Army bases. they had us do the annual PT test there one morning: it was already 80 mumble or better, with steam/mist on the ground.

they had us run down this long straight trail to a marker, then turn back... it was like doing PT in a sauna.

savages that me my krew were, we, and many others ran far enough down the trail to be invisible to the graders, due to the haze and the undulations of the trail (no, it wasn't flat as the regs require) and then we pulled off to the side, waited in the bushes out of sight from everyone, then, after allowing the appropriate amount of time to pass, but not raise eyebrows, we trotted back.

hey, if they aren't going to give the test to standard, to include acclimatization (minimum 6 weeks) WTF should the troops give a shit? the FFTs weren't doing the test, since they graded each other at home station twice a year, and never tested with the M-day scum.

bastards.

That is an oddity because it was from her own eggs, but most women that age could get pregnant if they wanted to by getting a donor egg that was fertilized implanted on their uterus. The ovaries may not be releasing eggs, but the uterus is still in perfectly good condition for pregnancy.

699 Zucker insists CNN is not in any trouble due to Trump and accusations of Fake News. Probably true. There are untold millions of LIV's in the US and they intend to remain LIV's. They want news that doesn't burst their bubble and CNN is their choice.

710 Good to see the comments bubbly.

That Johnny Gill - This One's For Me And You is pretty smooth. Nice. Thanks.

711 692: Watched the first one a couple of weeks back with a coworker. It was well done. I barely remember New Edition. Wasn't the kind of music I was listening too in the mid-late 80s. (The Cult, Rush, G'n'R, etc.)

The young lady sitting in the wicker chair above is rather fetching.

i) Of course, he's bound to say that, so coming from him, it's meaningless.

ii) At least LIVs are being forced to hear an alternate viewpoint, which hasn't happened before. They may try to reject it, but at least they will wince, and be forced to think, for a few seconds.

I look forward to weekly press beatings, er, briefings. They had become such a routine, predictable bore under Obama and unwatchable, even during a crisis. Only interesting thing would see what sycophant could humble and humiliate himself the most.

717 713: 1987?

Mine would be this year if we even have one. Probably wouldn't go anyway.

719 I have a long day today. So preps start soon.

But I wanted to say:

Vic, glad you survived the hospital, and that you and Mrs Vic are back together. I appreciated her comments and updates, along with your brothers update.

May you be blessed, and have a serene recovery.

And for the estimable SMFH and the others:

May every traffic light turn green as you approach.

721 My folks loved theirs. They went back to Long Beach for the 30th. I didn't go to mine. Dropped out in my Jr. year and got my GED before my class graduated. Figured I wouldn't know anyone. Little bro went to his 20th and had fun. You would probably have a good time.

727 Bobby Brown - Get Away

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzmjMe_xIPA
I've got to get away [x9]
Ain't nothin' but the funk, Baby!
I need a piece of mind,
I'm stressed out today
It's about that time
To make that get away
Dealin' with the people
I deal with everyday
Got to find a place I can hide away
So I can be away from the madness
Far from the noise and the darkness
It's not too late, there's got to be a way
For me to escape all this nonsense
I've got to get away [x5]
They try and run my life
But that's the way I live
Do what I want to do
'Cause it's my prerogative
People always trippin'
About the things I say
But I'm livin' for the future
And I'm doing things my way
So why does the world just keep on
Doggin' me
I have to leave it all behind
'Cause there's gotta be a way
For me to escape all this nonsense
I've got to get away [x4]
Yo, check the groove be 's kicking a flow real smooth.
E double SS with some cess is a necessity to move.
So hit it where ya fit in and let them rhythm snatch ya.
As I release another Brown batch of Jams that slam
And you can't touch so scram.
I know you cram to understand who I am.
Damn, by the way can I please get this dance
Let's not freelance cause I'm just getting started,
Believe me that was nothing but a Brown party.
That's on, going on and got it going on.
Bob and Ted's rated number one so flow on it
And if you're in the house pump your fist and say ho, ho, ho.
Ted bring me on back
Bring me on back, dance.
There it is, oow.
I've got to get away [To Fade]
