Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (02-15-2017)Winston Churchill was a smart man.... If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves. Some definitions: Latte (noun): Italian for "You paid too much for that cup of coffee." Calories (noun): Tiny creatures that live in your closet and sew your clothes a little bit tighter every night. Pets (noun): The only members of your family you actually like. Single (noun): A man who makes jokes about women in the kitchen. FROM THE PASTOR February 5, 2017 by Fr. George W. Rutler is worth reading in its entirety. Don't worry...it isn't long, but it is powerful. Father Rutler is angry that Christians in the Middle East are being ignored, and left to die. This is a robust defense of his faith and his flock, and it is a welcome change from the mealy-mouthed and politically correct pronouncements from so much of our clergy today. In the margin of a public speaker’s manuscript was the notation: "Weak point. Shout." Such is the rhetoric of those who place emotion over logic and make policy through gangs rather than parliaments. In Athens 2,400 years ago, Aristophanes described the demagogue as having "a screeching, horrible voice, a perverse, cross-grained nature and the language of the marketplace." That marketplace today includes the biased media and the universities that have become daycare centers. Total Eclipse Of The Heart: Literal Version I don't know who this guy is, but he sounds like a real Moron.... "The Gays" Are Revolting In point of fact, I don't think the homosexual community has any real justification for rebelling against the Trump administration, except tribal loyalty to progressives. He's not anti-gay, and has never said a single thing anti-gay to my knowledge. New [Y]ork City has the largest number of homosexuals in the country (San Fran has a higher rate of homosexuals, but NYC is much larger) and if you live here, you interact with homosexuals every single day. I'm quite certain that Trump has too, and often. I am embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of this band until quite recently. But I am making up for it by plaguing you with my musical failings. And last but perhaps not least, some video of Keanu Reeves' weapons training for "John Wick 2." Everyone around here who has done any shooting that requires speed is well aware how awesomely difficult it is. Reeves seems to be proficient, and that requires lots of practice. I think I saw at least one safety failure, but in his mild defense, everyone does stupid shit occasionally. The last time I did speed shooting I realized at one point, just after I had holstered my pistol that I had been pointing it at my foot. A loaded pistol. Round in the chamber (hammer down, finger off trigger at least). So somebody else gets to throw the first rock. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Born and raised in Chicago I hate he Yankees with great Zeal but as a 100% Italian I'm unhappy with how CBD put down his managerial career. Sure you can say his win in 96 was with Bucky's players (he left in 95) but Joe should get credit for the wins in 98,99, and 2000. How many talent LOADED World Series winners never repeat even with the same players? Lots. Don't let his dumb move about changing the rules or you hatred of the Yankees spill over to his mangerial career. Give the devil his due

tu3031 mentioned numerous cable TV series he's never seen. I got roped into jumping in around mid season 4 through 5 last year and got hooked. I like the political jousting and skullduggery that echoes the period of the Saxon, through Norman to the Plantagenet thrones. I was digging Ramsay Bolton (best character ever), but they bumped him off. Liked The Hound with Arya and who I'm rooting for is Littlefinger. Love that guy. Instead, I think that the executive producers finally got a look at the end picture, realized that they had the freedom to do whatever they felt was necessary to get there, and started culling storylines. Hurrah torpedo's version of Total Eclipse shouldn't be missed. Neither should Deadwood. Ending was a bit awkward and forced, but a great story with good acting while it lasted. I figure I'll take the same approach with Game of Thrones. Wait until it's over and the blu-rays get cheap to buy all at once, and then make it a nightly thing until we finish them all. As I have said on the book thread, my problem with GoT is not the writing per se. When you read long enough you start to get a feel for the writers personality. Cersei gets killed by her twin Jaimie. Witch told her she'd get killed by her younger brother, which she thinks is Tyrion. Tyrion's father isn't "You're no son of mine" Tywin. It's a Tygaryen. So he's related to Daenyres. So is Jon Snow. They'll be the three dragon riders who stop the White Walkers. Samwell Tarly tells them how to do it, based on his research. Evening horde, very frequent lurker here, very infrequent commenter. I'd like to ask a question. Here's the situation, my son had an auto accident today, he's fine but, the vehicle he struck rolled several times and the passengers were transported to the hospital. Their injuries didn't appear serious or life threatening, they were alert and able to move. So, of course, our concern is the potential lawsuit. What is the usual outcome for something like that, does our insurance company ride herd on that and pay the settlement or award? I assume there's probably a cap on what insurance will pay? What if the award exceeds that cap? My son is 24, lives at home, was driving a vehicle in my name and on my insurance policy. Am I vulnerable as well? Thanks.

That's not a narrative denouement. It's a middle finger. 2) The second to last season included an entire episode that showed Tony's daughter and her boyfriend working through major problems then deciding to get married. In the final season, there is a single line of dialogue to explain away the guy's absence (they broke up). One of your most important secondary characters goes from engaged to single, and all that deserves is a single line of dialogue? That's a middle finger. 136 Never seen Game of Thrones. Or House of Cards. Or Breaking Bad. Or The Walking Dead. Or The Sopranos.
Of those I've only seen Breaking Bad. It was okay. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at February 15, 2017 10:26 PM (zc3Db) ++++ The Sopranos is the best of the bunch. I've watched House of Cards, but the BBC version from a few decades ago is far superior. Also shorter. It was a miniseries. Something like 4 episodes, and done. The American version is just to stretched out and it is getting repetitive. I liked Breaking Bad, but not as much as some of the other HBO series. The Wire, Rome, Deadwood, Generation Kill, and The Sopranos are the ones I would recommend. Also, the spin-off from Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul has been pretty good, perhaps even superior to its parent. Posted by: Anon Y. Love The Wire. Last season has some holes, but overall it's my favorite long series. Amazing ensemble cast. Themes play out over the full five seasons. Season four is off the charts good when the "kids" get introduced. Despite the sometimes leftist bent of the creators, main theme is that institutions fail but personal redemption is possible. There's a show called "Jail" that is similar to "Cops". It shows the arrested people being brought into the county jail for processing. A good share of the people are drunk, on drugs, have horrible attitudes, or mentally ill.
At a dog show I was talking about this to a cop who worked at the Harris County jail. He said that drugs and alcohol were behind about two-thirds of the intake. Posted by: Kodos the Executioner at February 15, 2017 10:50 PM (J8/9G) 269

I started to watch GoT, but couldn't keep track of all the characters, and was turned off by the gratuitous sexuality. So I gave up on it. I would do what the other posters have mentioned as well. Screen shot any social media posts. If you know who the people are and know they are faking, do not record them yourself. We go after fake workmens comp cases. The employees are working out, dancing, carrying heavy things etc., but we have to hire an investigator. Our insurance company settles all the time. The Latest in Social Justice: Anti-Miscegenation
The anarcho-syndicalist "Antifa" (i.e. "anti-Fascists") who recently threw a violent temper-tantrum at U.C. Berkeley to stop the "NAZIism" of a gay foreign man with a Black lover, have warned people against the biggest threat to "Social Justice": Miscegenation. When considering current events, Morons and Moronettes, remember that all we need is ways to communicate. An "open-source political protest movement" is impossible to decapitate (borrowed that term from John Robb and his old blog Global Gorillas (misspelld). Those who want a movement opposing the Black Bloc with leadership and a chain of command and all that, are free to create one. Opposition can have organized and un-organized factions, working toward the same purpose.

@328 The opposite with Band of Brothers. The first season was awesome, but the second, The Pacific, was disappointing. I even went back later and gave it a second chance. I was right in the first place: it sucked.
--------------------- I wouldn't call The Pacific the second season of Band of Brothers. They were completely different shows, both in subject matter, and in style. I remember watching a few of the early episodes of The Pacific, and - aside from Alligator Creek - being utterly and completely bored. Posted by: CaliGirl at February 15, 2017 11:01 PM (8cEQL) This is part of the reason for getting a personal lawyer - to deal with your own insurance company. For a small accident this is usually no big deal but the one described (the car rolling a few times, etc.) it's best to have ones own counsel to deal with his own insurance company and make sure that he doesn't get roped into anything stupid. Anyway, that's my advice for serious accidents. People can take it or leave it. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at February 15, 2017 11:09 PM (zc3Db) 385

I saw Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on the main stage at the Newport Folk Festival in about 2004, 2005, somewhere around that time. The band had only been together for a year and were playing out of Nashville. They got pretty good billing, considering the late acts on the second day are usually Wilco and CSN and Bob Dylan and shit. Grace and the band were just ok.
Then I saw them at the House of Blues in Boston two years ago and that band was lights out and on fire. Grace Potter has been touring non-stop since I last saw her and it shows. Did you or someone close to you have glioblastoma or are you on the treatment side? My fil understands the risk but there wouldn't be progress in treatments if they didn't try new things. What she likes best in life is receiving the adoration of the masses, doing social justice (not necessarily being around for the consequences), and burning people alive. Antenna ran the series finale of Newhart (where he wakes up in bed as Bob Hartley with Suzanne Pleshette )just last month. I used to would have said I liked the second series, Newhart, better than the first, but now, watching them side-by-side, I can't really say which I like the best. Both are equally good. And Newhart took about two seasons to get into the groove. It didn't really good until Stephanie and Michael became regulars. Of course, Larry and the Daryls came a little before, and they were a big part of, but it took Michael and Stephanie to make the complete package. Posted by: I Be That Chick at February 15, 2017 10:49 PM (S/qwI) Oooo! Ooooo! I did. Do. Really like it but I could have done without the explicit homosex. By "could have done without" I mean, there was Eva Green! and lots of other characters (Lily/Brona Croft was OK) the makers of the series could have, um, shared with us. The Sir Malcolm character, it's always fun to see him. Posted by: The inexplicable Dr. Julius Strangepork at February 15, 2017 11:43 PM (fn748) 513

I saw that last month on Antenna TV, after they restarted after running the finale. My day was exciting in that I took 3 cats to the vets' for shots and check-ups
Howling, yowling, and to start it off I had to manhandle them all into various carriers. At least it is done for now, and the only remaining task is to take the one back to remove stitches next week. Posted by: Kindltot Geez, they didn't use the kind of stitches that disintegrate on their own? I wouldn't want to be the person who had to remove stitches from a cat. Someone needs to invent a muzzle for cats. Posted by: nerdygirl at February 15, 2017 11:36 PM (+lVUW) Many years ago I had to take my cat Smokey (half feral/half domesticated...weighed a solid 18 pounds) in for his shots. One dose had to be administered via nasal drops. The vet tried to hold Smokey, but he wasn't having any of it. So I told the vet I would hold him...not a positive experience. I was in the Navy at the time and was on my lunch break, so I was in uniform. Needless to say, Smokey dug into my uniform top with his claws. By the time I got back home to drop him off, I had blood spots all over my top from him digging into my chest. The little bastard! Posted by: I Be That Chick at February 15, 2017 11:47 PM (S/qwI) 521

You guys talking "Newhart"? I remember that the first season of that show was shot and shown on videotape; after that, they went to film.
Also, at his blog the other day, Ken Levine was sharing information about the production of Cheers. On the set, the bar was fully functional... but had no refrigeration. George Wendt et al had to drink what Levine called "warm 3.2 beer" onstage. And, at one point in the first season when Cheers wasn't doing great, NBC asked if they could try shooting on videotape. They did a test run and, according to Levine, the bar looked horrible on videotape. Something about shooting on film made it look much more real. Not to do with the best episodes but I liked that there were two episodes of Homicide mentioning the Canadian Football League
And I liked that when they introduced Giordello's son, the actor (Gus from Breaking Bad) really was half Italian and half black in real life as Giordello was supposed to be. (Although I only learned that when I read Giancarlo Esposito's bio at IMDB due to Breaking Bad---and it helped for this Canadian that his surname is Esposito!) The first season of Newhart was indeed shot on tape -- you can see the difference. It got good ratings, but it wasn't that good. The second season's ratings weren't so hot, and that's when they were trying different things, trying to figure out what worked.
Watching the second season now, and knowing how it turned it, it's fun to watch it come together -- see them figure out what worked. You can see Stephanie coming into her own, becoming more insane. And then they hit on Peter Scolari as Michael. I saw the first episode he appeared in the other day. He was not the same Michael you remember. But you can see him and Stephanie transforming into the zany characters you remember. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at February 16, 2017 12:00 AM (DW+jj) 552

"Over at ZeroHedge: US intel officials have withheld information from President Trump." Saying that they do so because they fear leaks by him or his staff. http://tinyurl.com/hr2mwb8 There have been two times in my life that the IC people have gone up against a President, that I know of. Each time it involved secrets that could be, or were being compromised and sex. But also each time both of these things were kept hidden to keep the secrets and/or to hide that there was even a war being fought. Going public is an unusual tactic. It smells more like the usual lefty thing of smearing their opponent by accusing them of doing exactly what they, the left, are, have, and will be doing. The leakers saying we can't brief the President because his administration will leak classified info, so we're leaking classified info first. "So, why are they worried? The current and former officials said the decision to avoid revealing sources and methods with Mr. Trump stems in large part from the president's repeated expressions of admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his call, during the presidential campaign for Russia to continue hacking the emails of his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton." Newhart, when it came into its own, had a lot in common with Green Acres, and I realized that's why I liked it so. That is apparently the kind of comedy that really tickles my pickle. It's the sane man, the normal guy, thrown into some surreal situation surrounded by lunatics. But the lunatics are all happy and lunacy is what is normal to them. Save for the sane normal man (Oliver Douglas or Bob Newhart), who has to be normal and when he goes a little off the rails, all the lunatics are shocked and offended. Note how Lisa fit right in with the lunatics, as different as she was. And CBS was doing well with Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies and the others, but got ashamed of the the rural bumpkin image and so cancelled them all to be more sophisticated. Idiots. There was lot of good drama and writing, but I gave that show up in season 3. The character Dorian Grey is about teh ghey and nothing else. He is a wrecking ball to the show on the scale of Jar Jar Binks. Granted the character that Oscar Wilde created never changes and never learns, but that's the unanswered task for the writers.
I got the impression that they were trying to set up for a season 4 at the beginning of season three and suddenly found out that they were cancelled. I didn't have a problem with Dorian Grey. His character was a monster of a different sort than all the others, but no less dangerous or monsterous. He was seductive, but his seduction destroyed others, as we see with Lily and her little army. "So, why are they worried? The current and former officials said the decision to avoid revealing sources and methods with Mr. Trump stems in large part from the president's repeated expressions of admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his call, during the presidential campaign for Russia to continue hacking the emails of his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton." So their stated worries are based on misconstructions and lies that the press has blasted out at the behest of the DNC and the Clinton campaign? Either they are not very intelligent intelligence people or they are also just lying Democrat hacks in intel cover. Posted by: geoffb5 at February M having a hard time swallowing this one, might they be slow walking some stuff because they're partisan hacks - sure. And, the story will be we were waiting for your team to get in place. But, witholding product on some vague CI concern, no way. It's not their job to worry about that side of the game. Anyways, obfuscation of sources and methods is common practice, except on Hilary's servers and leaked transcripts. Posted by: Jean at February 16, 2017 12:32 AM (zZb/S) 607
I watched a season of True Blood. The Vampirism = Homosexuality thing annoyed me. Off all the comparisons, you're going to compare homosexuals to parasitic creatures who feed off the innocent, often killing them, seduce and manipulate their victims, and convert others in order to make more of their kind?

If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.

Willy was brilliant.
Fascinating propaganda, I can almost picture the DNC as the Duke of Gloucester: Now is the winter of our discontent Made glorious summer by this sun of York; And all the clouds that lour'd upon our house In the deep bosom of the ocean buried. Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths; Our bruised arms hung up for monuments; Our stern alarums changed to merry meetings, Our dreadful marches to delightful measures. Grim-visaged war hath smooth'd his wrinkled front; And now, instead of mounting barded steeds To fright the souls of fearful adversaries, He capers nimbly in a lady's chamber To the lascivious pleasing of a lute. But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks, Nor made to court an amorous looking-glass; I, that am rudely stamp'd, and want love's majesty To strut before a wanton ambling nymph; I, that am curtail'd of this fair proportion, Cheated of feature by dissembling nature, Deformed, unfinish'd, sent before my time Into this breathing world, scarce half made up, And that so lamely and unfashionable That dogs bark at me as I halt by them; Why, I, in this weak piping time of peace, Have no delight to pass away the time, Unless to spy my shadow in the sun And descant on mine own deformity: And therefore, since I cannot prove a lover, To entertain these fair well-spoken days, I am determined to prove a villain And hate the idle pleasures of these days. Plots have I laid, inductions dangerous, By drunken prophecies, libels and dreams, To set my brother Clarence and the king In deadly hate the one against the other: And if King Edward be as true and just As I am subtle, false and treacherous, This day should Clarence closely be mew'd up, About a prophecy, which says that 'G' Of Edward's heirs the murderer shall be. Dive, thoughts, down to my soul: here Clarence comes. Posted by: whatmeworry? at February 16, 2017 03:45 AM (dZGNV) 689

I get tired of the endless apologies. The inevitable of it all. Someone says something- which was obviously heartfelt- and the entire goon squad comes out of the wings. That is all twitter seems to be, a mass of locust hurrying from anything that shows some signs of life, swarming, and then leaving a desiccated, chewed corpse to move onto the next outrage.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at February 16, 2017 04:45 AM (92kX2) The world these people always build ends up being gray, sterile, and utterly devoid of joy or hope. Their use of Twitter is how they enforce their own little ideological Borg collective. Any drone that shows any sign of independence is mercilessly dogpiled until they recant and return to aping a consensus opinion that nobody particularly loves or believes, but feels compelled to follow. Because they can't love it or believe it, all they can do is feel guilt for not loving it or believing it, and feel like they've won approval when they tear down someone else for transgressing. The Left is similar to the old internet story about the banana experiment.
5 monkeys are placed in an enclosure with a ladder and a bunch of bananas at the top. The monkeys all scramble for the ladder, and as soon as one reaches for the bananas, every monkey gets hosed down with freezing water. They try a few more times, and learn to associate the bananas with the water blast. A monkey is removed, and a new one introduced. The new one goes for the bananas, and gets beaten down by the other 4. A second monkey is removed, and the previous newcomer joins the 3 oldsters in beating down the new newcomer. Keep repeating, and pretty soon no monkey will go for the bananas, despite none of the remaining monkeys having ever been sprayed. Posted by: fluffy at February 16, 2017 05:43 AM (jw2Xw) Exactly. They turn the demonization into a tradition carried out by pure reflex. The motives, the ideas behind it, the things they're protecting aren't thought about at all. The nail that sticks up gets pounded, and those that do the pounding feel good about themselves. Nobody questions it. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at February 16, 2017 05:56 AM (J+mig) 720

I couldn't be a cop at all -- not temperamentally suited. Somebody would give me some lip, dis me, and I'd lose my shit and do something terrible.
Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at February 15, 2017 10:21 PM (DW+jj) A good technique to avoid that is verbal judo (yes, it is a thing) and realizing that the person "dising" you is purposely trying to make you loose your temper. That doesn't always work and you end up rolling around in the mud, but I always preferred talking to fighting. Like the man said, you get more with kind words and a gun than with kind words alone. I'm not much for GoT but my wife loves it, so I put up with it.
It's a great reminder, however, of what happens when rule of law falls apart. Do progressives really want that? Also, that the "politics is not personal, the personal is politics." Everytime I see some shit-stirring by some hellhole third world nation (North Korea, Uganda, Russia), I'm reminded that they're doing that because the guy in the big seat feels like his dick is too small and has to pump it up. That's why Democrat Frank Church screwed the world over by stopping political assassinations. Dictators are always willing to sacrifice their people if it makes their dick hard. They're less willing when they and their family are in the gun sights. Posted by: Uma Thurmond's Feet at February 16, 2017 06:41 AM (1bZiX) 739
