Quick Insomnia Update Plus Flynn's Resignation and Why I'm Reasonably Happy About It

I wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions on dealing with insomnia.

A couple of commenters mentioned making the bedroom as cold as possible. I always preferred a cold room for sleep, but I didn't realize that the body takes cold as a sign that it's night and therefore that it's time to sleep. This video mentions that head-caps filled with circulating cold water helps people sleep quickly and deeply; I didn't have a head-cap filled with circulating cold water, but I did throw a cold compress on my pillow (wrapped in a cloth).

I don't know if that helped because I was attempting six different things at once, but I'll tell you, I think it worked, because within minutes of putting my head on that cold compress I wanted to sleep, even though it had been my plan to read for an hour before knocking off.

Oh, and apparently cold baths before bed do wonders for signalling the body to sleep, and, surprisingly, so do hot baths. The latter actually works to cool you down because, after emerging from the bath, your body cools down in response to the exogenous heat, and also just generally loses heat through steam. But you need to give yourself like a half hour or forty minutes to cool down if you want to use the hot bath for sleep-inducing purposes.

I didn't try that yet but might try it tonight. I'm curious about the cold bath strategy but that sounds a lot like torture.

I got to bed reasonably early. Got up a bit late, but I needed the catch-up sleep. I did immediately blast myself in the face with a wake-up light (strong blue light helps re-set the body clock by signalling the eyes and thus the brain that it's daytime). I don't know if that worked yet; I guess I'll know tonight, given that the idea is that the light should cause the body to start to get sleepy about 16 hours later. Thanks to commenters for mentioning delayed sleep phase disorder, which I must surely have. (And which light therapy is often effective in curing or at least mitigating.)

Anyway, I got some sleep. Not really totally awake because of sleep debt and that jet-lag feeling of changing sleep hours. But I hope by the weekend I've got a regular sleeptime.

To add a little news here, let me just get out of the way the obligatory news that's already old news: Around 11 pm last night (when I was already in bed), Mike Flynn resigned. It's suggested that the main reason for the resignation was that he had lied to Vice President Pence about the substance of his discussion with the Russian official. There's also chatter that Yates (the Obama AG holdover who refused to defend Trump's travel EO), Clapper, and Brennan had previously tried to warn Trump that Flynn was "blackmailable" by the Russians.

And oh boy, do those three subverters of democratically-elected government officials have a huge supply of credibility in my book.

Incidentally, I hear the loss of Flynn is no great loss anyway. Natsec people I know complain about him a lot. Yes, he famously broke with Obama. But there was a reason Obama appointed him in the first place -- he shares most of the assumptions of other liberal defense wonks, and (I hear, can't confirm) he or his people have worked to keep out more conservative people out of key natsec positions.

Like, there's a whole coterie of people who think saying "The Muslim Brotherhood is potentially dangerous and should not be placed into key natsec roles" is some kind of extremist rhetoric that can't be tolerated.

Actually, I hear that a lot of Trump's picks are kinda liberal-ish on foreign policy so there's a lot of resistance to letting the Barbarian Infidels into the city from a lot of different people, but I gotta think Flynn was either one of the gatekeepers or could have chosen to overrule other people keeping out clear-eyed conservatives, but chose not to.

To be honest, I've wanted him out of there since the transition.

I should try that. I've always taken at least 2-3 hours to fall asleep, ever since I was a child. It would be nice to actually go to bed and drop off in less time than it takes to watch Rashomon.

9 The one rule my doc gave me about insomnia is: set your alarm if you have to get up at a certain time, but turn the clock so you can't see it ---and don't look at it during the night.

If you do, you'll just become more anxious about how little time you have left before that damned alarm goes off.

34 I have always enjoyed a cold room when sleeping.

Maybe that's part of the reason that I go to sleep so easily. My wife does not like a cold room when sleeping, and since she goes to bed as I'm waking up, she tends to try to make the room warmer. Maybe that's one reason she has trouble falling asleep herself.

I shall bring this up as a possibility.

37 Ace,
Try getting one of the cool gel pillows--those help. Melatonin in low doses 3-5 mg helps if you take it 30 minutes or so before bed. Don't watch tv or deal with bright electronic screens prior to bed. Last, but not least, reading boring technical manuals or law books can induce sleep because you have to concentrate on boring stuff--it crowds out other thoughts that might keep you up. Eventually, depending on your tolerance 20-30 minutes, your sleep factor kicks in.

In addition, she and Sid were in possession of classified docs that they were not supposed to have - stuff they have not been "read in" on, as well as Sid getting his hands on a highly classified NSA doc within 24 hours of it being presented.

Bottom line was: Hillary was essentially spying on her own government via insiders in various intelligence agencies. Someone was passing her these classified docs, and these someones are no doubt still working in their agencies. How hard would it be for Hillary to be using these guys/gals to kneecap Trump now???

universally the effects of weight loss (now at 168, yay) have been positive. Like, my blood pressure has dropped to the point where I'm now taking only one of the two pills I used to, and that one at a quarter of the original dosage. And I might just stop taking that soon.

73 The
entire "scandal" is based on innuendo. Flynn tripped over his own feet
by misinforming Vice President Pence on the nature of his call and
allowing the veep to issue a too sweeping denial of any discussion. If
Flynn had said in his conversation with the Russian ambassador that we
will discuss the sanctions after Trump takes office, he might well have
told Pence that they did not discuss the sanctions. And the CIA leakers could have used the appearance of the word "sanctions" in their
transcript to brand Pence a liar. We don't know, and for some reason,
nobody is gaining access to the actual transcripts so that we may see
the content. Perhaps the congressional investigations to come will gain
access. But Flynn is now gone, and media memes have been firmly planted in the public mind.

As you all might recall back in 1996 a Valujet DC9 went down in the Miami Everglades. Alligators ate all the victims, dead or alive.

Valujet had a cartoonish logo of a silly airplane that was cute...until the time of the crash. The logo made the airline seem very unserious.

95 Wait. Is there *really* an airline called Boom Airlines?

I should probably mention that there is a Burton / Taylor movie from 1968 titled Boom!, based on the Tennessee Williams play The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore.

It's considered a camp classic* by no less an authority than John Waters, who says he uses a viewing of the movie as a test for potential dating partners.

...

it's worth it. it takes about 3-4 months to starve the beast. At first, you're gonna want those carbs a lot. After 4 days or a week, you'll want them, but it won't be a strong craving.

Little by little after that the wanting reduces slowly. Ultimately it becomes just a take-it-or-leave-it thing.

I used to do cheat day dieting but that cheat day would just always zoom up my addiction to carbs (and the cheat day would invite subsequent half-cheat days to appease the carb jones).

In fact, I porked up like crazy following the lowcarb for six days then a carbed-out cheat day plan.

It's like smoking. Once you quit, you really can't have "Just One Cigarette as a Social Thing" any longer. The minute you do that, you've re-activated the addiction, and within 3 days you're just full-on smoking again.

We cannot run a elected government with un-elected people, no matter what agency they are in, just doing whatever their emotions tell them they must do.

What is the point of elections if these people are the real power. No wonder so many of them, and their allies like Tom Friedman, love the CCP. I am confused why they don't like Putin's government either considering that is what they desire for America.

Again, I wouldn't put this all on Spicer. First, he works for a boss who is a bit of a loose cannon when it comes to messaging. Second, there is nobody coordinating messaging for the administration so it sounds like a lot of this is just winging it. Third, nobody has really done this role before, he is going to war with the press on a daily basis. I've never seen the press more hostile in an ordinary daily briefing session.

He's been doing communications in increasingly larger roles for years so I don't think he just forgot how to do it. When the administration settles down a bit I think he'll be fine.

=================

Is the market for political pundits so bad that they have to keep going to the same people?

Is Kathleen Parker such a draw that she makes a noticeable upswing in ratings or readership?

If I were an editor, I think that I'd try to place some emphasis on being right about things. If I were hiring someone to be a regular columnist, say, then I'd go through their stuff and find their predictions and how often they were right.

Missing something that everyone else misses (like Trump's presidency) is at least somewhat forgivable, but making this kind of prediction that Trump won't be president in 2 years is the sort of thing that a columnist should be staking their career on. Not for fear of any sort of law breaking, but because no editor should take them seriously after it crashes and burns.

It probably has to do with the fact that the media is really just one big family, though. Can't kick out crazy cousin Kathleen, she's Uncle Billy Bob's girl, and he wouldn't like it.

176 Flynn is a casualty of war -- there will be more on both sides. Anyone who wants to hang out at the beach burying the dead instead of attacking is going to lose.

Flynn was a self-inflicted wound. He effed himself by misleading/lying to Pence and letting Pence go on TV with that lie. Of course Obama loyalists/Trump enemies would leak the transcript proving Flynn lied. It doesn't matter that the substance of the call is a nothing burger --Flynn had to go and he did the honorable thing.

This is like a football game -- at the start no one has won so every play is hyped -- every tackle, every completed pass is cheered and the players high five. But in the end, despite all the cheering and high fiving, only one team wins and the other loses. The Dems right now are cheering and high fiving the 9th Circuit and Flynn but the game is far from over. And Trump has proved time and again in the primary and GE that he plays the long game.

Trump wins because he stays moving, always on attack. And he doesn't sacrifice the good for the perfect -- he makes a good plan and violently executes it making quick adjustments as needed. In this case, Flynn, who had to go so Trump could get back on offense.

Bottom line is he was trying to make a deal with Russia to have them help us fight ISIS in return for sanction relief . Heres the money quote "The real problem is not that he spoke to the Russians or visited Moscow. There was no secret deal. Rather, the problem was that he tried to execute a radical shift in strategy that was actively opposed by senior officials. When they heard what Flynn was doing, they went ballistic. To put it another way, Trump shut down an attempt by Flynn to bring the Russians into the IS war. And Putin did not escape the sanctions "

Unless Flynn seriously, with intent, misled his superiors, or no-shit committed some kind of crime (and neither is anywhere near proven), they should have stuck with him and manned the barricades.

257 I'll say what I said on the ONT,

People like to talk about politicians playing "nine-dimensional chess", but it's always been bullshit. Trump doesn't. He is, however, a fencer in many ways. In a lot of the old manuals on swordsmanship, there's an emphasis on gaining the bind with your opponent (crossing blades edge on edge) so that you know where he is and can feel what he's going to do. It reduces your opponent's options and is the first step to controlling the line and winning. Trump seems to operate like that: he doesn't wait for perfect but instead makes a plan, executes it, and then adjusts on the fly. Flynn was a good choice, but when the left managed to make it too hot for him to continue, he resigned and now Trump will find someone else. If one of his appointments isn't handling their duties, they'll be replaced. He proposed an immigration ban for 90 days, and the left moved against it and in doing so committed themselves to a specific position, one that is hard to publicly defend. Trump's strength seems to be an intuitive understanding of people and situations. It's why he works so well on twitter.

Hooker WAS a good general, he just wasn't a good supreme commander, no matter what his thoughts on military dictatorship.

That was because it was the one good hire. Grant then handled the rest with Sherman and Sheridan.

Hence the $50...
=================

Grant was a patient SOB.

His original 1864 plan for simultaneous strikes against Atlanta, the Shenandoah Valley, and Richmond (via coastal VA) went astray when, for political reasons, Lincoln appointed David Hunter to the Shenandoah and Ben Butler to run the Virginia coastal invasion. Both Hunter and Butler were darlings of the Radical Republicans, but they were incompetent. Grant wanted Sedgwick for the Shenandoah assignment, but Sedgwick was in bad odor with the Radicals.

Hunter got whipped at New Market and Butler ran himself and his Army of the James into a corner in the Bermuda Hundreds. That left only Meade and the Army of the Potomac to fight it out with Lee during the Overland Campaign and Sherman against Joe Johnston for Atlanta. That was enough, just barely, for the Union's cause in 1864. When Hunter became came a' cropper, Grant replaced him with Sheridan. IIRC, Butler's demise came after the 1864 election.

Phillipe Reines, senior political advisor to Hillary Clinton, tweeted this to Genral Flynn and his son Mike Flynn Jr. last night, after it was announced that his Father had resigned from the national security position.

Dear Mike Flynn & Mike Flynn Jr.,

And given your pizza obsession...

If you're unfamiliar with Flynn Jr., he was one of the more prominent people close to the Trump administration who questioned the peculiarities of the Pizzagate story.

Apparently, "the latest research" (we're so mistrustful of this phrase now) says that there's no value to the idea of "sleep debt" in that you can sleep longer on weekends to "make up" for sleep lost during the week. In essence, you're taking the hit through the week, and you gain no extra benefit by sleeping longer on weekends. I guess it's like drinking heavily during the week is not balanced by going sober on weekends. You're just a five-nights drunk instead of drunk all the time.

I pretty much agree with you. Trump is not your typical politician, so trying to fathom his next moves by what a regular politician would do is just wrong. Like with his campaign, Trump will change actions and will change personnel until he finds what works for him. When things cease to function he will bring in new people until things get moving again.

Trump is not a normal politician - do not forget that and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Town halls are for partisans and activists that have already made up their mind and want to put on a show.

I've never in my life met someone who attended a Congressman's townhall because they were undecided and uninformed and wanted to get answers on issues.

Now on something like a local issue that really isn't ideological ? That's completely different.

364 MP4, This got willowed on the previous thread. I hope it will give my perspective on music.

" I adore classical music, but I can't tell you why I like something, only that I do - for example, the first movement of the Eroica symphony is, to my ears, probably the finest thing ever written."

MP4, Don't know if this will help you to understand. My favorite composer is JS Bach. At the time, much of the music was still related to dance with the physical tempos that come from that. I believe the body responds to such things. I also love the convoluted, intertwined melodies for each instrument and take delight in how the tones and meters combine and still stand distinct. Also, music, especially instrumental music, was played by smaller groups. A chamber orchestra might only have 30 or so players or fewer. This lets each instrument be heard for its own quality even as it adds to the whole. As later orchestras got larger, I feel they substituted volume that overwhelmed the values of each instrument. Doesn't mean Beethoven and later composers didn't write wonderful music but it doesn't effect me as much as the Baroque style. In addition, the instruments from the older Baroque or earlier periods had a different sound or intonation which I like. Listen to a quartet or chamber piece played on period correct instruments and see if you can hear the difference.

For a modern vocal version of chamber music, try listening to the Swingle Singers. They produce a similar reaction for me.

benefit by sleeping longer on weekends. I guess it's like drinking
heavily during the week is not balanced by going sober on weekends.
You're just a five-nights drunk instead of drunk all the time.

Well, I dunno. Sometimes when you are very deprived of sleep staying in bed 11-12 hours is a good way to make sure you actually get a full 8 hours of sleep. I often experience a "Sleep Hangover" when after several days of barely any sleep I finally fall asleep at night and wake later into the afternoon. I know I'm over the bout because my thoughts are very sluggish instead racing around like an excited squirrel. Getting only 6-7 hours of sleep in those situations doesn't cut it for me.

Butler was removed after he blundered the attack on Fort Fisher. Porter
had a good quote in a message to Grant which I cannot find at the moment
about Butler. I think it was "same army, send different general", or
something like that.
===============

LOL Yeah, now I remember. Butler's idea was to load up a ship with gunpowder and have it blown up in the immediate vicinity of Ft. Fisher. When the resulting explosion barely disturbed the garrison's slumber and left the ramparts intact, Butler's enthusiasm for the project fizzled. Terry was the right man for the job.

Before Thor and I were married, I also slept with a window open in winter. One year when we were living in Missouri, I woke up with a thin layer of ice on the Pile O' Blankets I was burrowed under. I slept like a boss, though.

437 Trying to make yourself go to sleep is like trying not to think of an elephant.

When I was young I had trouble sleeping because my parents always made us go to bed too early. After a while I learned to distract myself by making up a story in my mind. I would think about that and next thing I knew I'd be waking up the next day.

Now it's very easy to go to sleep. It never takes more than a minute, and I can do it on an airplane as easily as in my own bed.

438 Why would anyone willingly immerse themselves in cold water? I have memories of my father following my pediatrician's orders to immerse me in a tub of super cold water and ice cubes to lower my dangerously high fever. I can still see the look on my poor father's face, like he'd been told to torture his own toddler. The pity and fear was so great on his countenance that it rivals the pain of being in that water.

Hot baths are lovely and relaxing.

441 For sleep problems, try melatonin. It's the chemical that your brain produces to tell itself it's time for bed: something to do with the circadian rhythms. No side effects, no hangover, no addiction issues, and it's perfectly legal (in the UK, but I order it from the US so I assume there are no problems on your side of the pond either). I'm a lifelong insomniac, 3 hours sleep is a good night for me . I've tried prescription drugs, which do work but leave you feeling just as bad the next day as if you hadn't slept; and every folk remedy known to man, all of which never worked for me. Melatonin was a life changer, I have never slept as well as I do now. I recommend it very highly indeed.
