Marvel Comics Turning Away From Social Justice Warrior Storylines After Sales, Get This, Plunge

It's almost as if the Social Justice Warriors claiming they want this and that in the comic books don't actually read comic books at all, just like they didn't play any of the videogames they claimed had to be changed so as not to disturb their delicate constitutions.

BleedingCool's Rich Johnston, who spoke to connected sources who attended Marvel's recent creative summit, says that the company plans to return their classic comics to the status quo. Readers can expect Thor, Iron Man and Hulk to move away from the heavy-handed politics that made them difficult for readers to care about. Fans, he says, can expect to see a more "familiar looking Marvel Universe" by the fall. New characters will get to stay, though.

Johnston added that while the plan is to depoliticize the Marvel universe, some very political comics like Secret Empire are far too deep for its creators to change direction. He said that the book will be a "bit of a last hurrah for this kind of storytelling from Marvel for a while." Thank goodness for that.

This guy was talking about Marvel's plummet into SJW bullshit last January.

A bit of background: Marvel's sales have been bad for a while. A couple of years ago, competitor DC made a bunch of unpopular changes to characters. Not really political changes, just changes.

But their sales dropped due to that.

DC has now launched with a "Rebirth" branding where they've returned characters to their classic interpretations. Since then, DC has been kicking Marvel's ass in sales.

Based on Marvel's shitty sales -- inexplicable given that they're making a billion or two dollars on their movies every year -- this guy predicted Marvel would be aping DC in its "Rebirth" rebooting, and getting rid of their "diversity push" to replace every iconic character with a more "diverse" replacement.

Dropping the bullshit Social Justice Warrior crap is part of that.

24 Marvel has more problems than SJW infestation. Yeah, that's obnoxious and turning away readers, but they have a near hostility toward comic books and superheroes.

The guys at AV Club (yeah) has a great analysis of Marvel:

http://tinyurl.com/go5pzxv

"Marvel hasn't been in this weak of a position, creatively, since the mid-'90s. Every popular character is bogged down in weird stories. Readers are cooling on events. Creators are leaving the company. Management remains dismissive of critique and increasingly stubborn. The last time this happened, Marvel suffered years of attrition before a complete change in management at the turn of the century. Drastic changes are needed, because the company has profoundly lost its way."

I'm sure years from now if there is a comic book movie resurgence "Old Man Iron Man" will make an appearance with a sixty something RDJ.

The biggest liability the Marvel movies have is their over-focus on Stark due to the popularity of RDJ's performance. It's bogged them down and made the character too pivotal and too erratic.

-------------------

I liked the reveal at the end.

Stark's angst gets most of the complaints. This is particularly since the Stark we see in the first Iron Man movie would not have agreed to the accords like the Stark in the movie does. They had to mess with the character to get him to take the side they wanted him to take.

Most of the complaints about Bucky that I've heard about (fortunately, not from anyone I know) generally come from slash fic authors. You can probably guess that they're not complaining about anst.

Creators are leaving the company. Management remains dismissive of critique and increasingly stubborn. Drastic changes are needed, because the company has profoundly lost its way."

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 07, 2017 06:33 PM

The 90's must look pretty good to Marvel about now. They suffered serious setbacks, but, the most damaging was poor business decisions and investments. Creatively, they were still doing ok, compared to now and though sales declined by the latter half of the 90's, the actual numbers were gangbusters compared to today. IMHO, if by management, they mean business, rather than creative, then yes it worked out. But, the change in editorial and creative dept's at the turn of the century was awful and represented the first step to the problems they have now.

Tallow, not lard. Tallow is beef or mutton fat, lard is pork fat.

Although pork fat makes awesome fried taters too.

If you have one of those countertop deep fryers, try this:

1) Deep fry a package of bacon, a few strips at a time. Don't start with too much oil, because you'll wind up with a lot more in there when you finish. The bacon also comes out awesome this way, by the way. Perfectly and uniformly crisp, and it cooks FAST.

2) Use the bacon fat to deep-fry french fries, tater tots, or hash browns.

Thank me later.

170 @46 So let's see. I expect they'll keep the Muslim Ms. Marvel. Because the original Ms. Marvel has been Captain Marvel for a while.

But you can expect Thor to return to being Thor no more chick Thor. Tony Stark will return to being Iron Man. The Falcon will have to stop pretending he's Captain America.
-------------------------

It says up at the top that the new characters will stay. So there will probably be a regular guy Thor, and Jane Foster Thor. Jane will just have to get a new hammer (like one particular alien did). That's not necessarily a problem in the current Marvel, though. There have been two Hawkeyes for a while, both running around with the same name (and frequently working together). The new one appeared while the old one was dead (due to an unrelated storyline), and was apparently popular enough that the management didn't want to get rid of her when the original came back. So having two characters with the same superhero name can work.

One thing I do find particularly amusing about this whole thing -

Marvel (specifically, Joe Quesada) went the really stupid route when it wrecked Spiderman's marriage a while back. Fast forward to Marvel's big event this past year (or year before? can't remember), and it featured a bunch of alternate continuities, all of which got a few issues. One of the continuities was one in which Peter and MJ were still married, and had a young daughter (not May Day; different alternate universe). Peter's still Spider-man, daughter has spider powers that she can only sort of control, and MJ ends up suiting up in Peter's old Iron Spider armor to help out. Regular super hero family.

Apparently it turned out to be fairly popular, because when Marvel finished the event and switched back over to the regular comic book lines, that particular alternate universe got its own series.

Marvel keeps trying to dictate from the top, but the readers keep saying, "Dude, your choices SUCK!"

Having your team in place and arguments already to go, before signing an inflammatory EO that will provoke an instant reaction, ought to be common political sense.

Overall, the 90's gets a bad rap that's only partially deserved. They were dealing with the Image exodus, Image clone competition and the repercussions of the spike in popularity of that style. As a result, pencilers/artists were given way to much clout and writing took something of a back seat. Marvel also published way too many titles and overprinted at a time when the speculator bubble burst and later, the newsstand sale fiasco. Also, IMO, Too. Much. Wolverine. However in spite of all this, Marvel managed to put out some really good stuff across all the titles, it's just that it was along with a lot of chaff as well.

The filing put Flentje and Justice Department lawyer Edwin Kneedler atop
the list of U.S. lawyers. Flentje has worked for the Justice
Department's civil division for most of his 19-year career there.

100 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

295 One thing I do find particularly amusing about this whole thing -

Posted by: junior at February 07, 2017 07:00 PM

Quesada... *groan* I remember when he and the "new wave" overseers first took over. They really did take a hostile stance against readers from almost the outset. They abandoned the comics code, brought in weird indie artists that didn't suit the books they were on and changed stuff just for the sake of it. Their response to readers complaints was always "Fuck you. Don't like it? Piss off." I mean literally... they printed those responses in the letters section, FFS. That's when Marvel headed to cray-cray town.

313 It was so predictable and I had seen it before now. I collected books during my youth in the 60's and 70's. I loved Marvel and DC, but came to eschew DC because it did the SJW thing. So most of my collection is Marvel from the 70's. I stopped collecting when book prices went to 40 cents a book. When I started I was paying 12 to 15 cents a book.

For kicks, when I heard about DC's rebirth, I started collecting again, more than 35 years since I stopped. The DC titles are fresh and it has been a fun exercise. It has been like revisiting my childhood, awaiting new comic book day.

Marvel's problem is that it is owned by Disney. Disney is the antithesis of what Walt created. Disney is so political it would be right at home in the Third Reich or Fascist Italy.

Don't know for sure. Lawyers have a different view and a different definition of win. I don't think he is playing chess at all. I think he is pushing VOLUME , baby. Most of what he want will get through unscathed. The rest will make bureaucrat litigators and activist judges look like th shitheads they are.

That's why I voted for him.

But I trust his instincts.

341 324 OT Stand by. Giant California Dept of Water Resources fuck-up proving Murphy is correct again...nature sides with the hidden flaw at Oroville Dam, one of the worlds largest dams. Giant hole formed in concrete spillway while dumping floodwater. Now they turned off dumping water because hole in concrete spillway is eroding mountainside that contains the lake. The only other way to release water is through the power turbines but so much water is coming in that the dam will overtop in three days...this is the worlds tallest earth filled dam and if it overtops it will self destruct. Fun stuff. Sacramento will be flooded. 3.5 million acre feet capacity and is 50' from top at 2.9 million acre feet. 119000cfs coming in and 5000cfs leaving via powerhouse. The spillway must function.
Posted by: torabora at February 07, 2017 07:27 PM (a82Wz)

Hope somebody has a good camera setup that will make all CGI of dams collapsing obsolete. Sure the lawyers will need a copy.
If it does totally fail, the scoured material downstream could hold some uncovered gold. New Trump admin might pay for the wall with an aggressive dredger operation. Just turn it over to the EPA after gold is listed as heavy metal pollution and Superfund should cover the costs of recovery.

519 I could not tell you the name of any previous Dept. of Educ. head.

Arne Duncan and his safe school initiative where teaching fisting to first graders was a-okay kind of stands out.

520 Zero hedge is claiming Loretta Lynch had to wait 160 days to get confirmed? Really?Zero hedge is claiming Loretta Lynch had to wait 160 days to get confirmed? Really?

Seemingly so, of course Holder was still the AG during this period. From the wiki

"On November 8, 2014, President Barack Obama nominated her to succeed Eric Holder as Attorney General.[1] On February 26, 2015, the Judiciary Committee of the United States Senate confirmed her appointment by a 12-8 vote, with all Democrats of the committee and three Republicans in favor. On April 23, 2015, Lynch was confirmed by the Senate by a 56-43 vote"

Just be happy she didn't introduce any of my Letters-to-the-Editors.

525 #517: I didn't see much of the remake. A bunch of my friends were nuts about it.

What little I saw of Hatch, he came across as a nice, level-headed, down-to-earth guy. IIRC, he wrote a few columns at Breitbart when it was first getting started.

526 eh, I gave up on American and then most other comics back in the early 2000s. Was never a big comic reader (liked manga and manwha more, honestly), but I used to get issues here or there. I'm just surprised it's taken this long for sales to flag enough that the companies actually noticed.

527 Oh look, its Stephen Moore debating Robert Reich on CNN. Not listening to it, just noticed it. I wonder where Reich wear's his tin foil hat?

528 275 @227 I had GI Joe 1-60. Gave them to my nephews.

The early issues (not sure about the later ones) got collected and reprinted a little while back.

The collected volumes are gorgeous and worth the cash - matched hardcovers with commentary - both about RL background and explanations of military acronyms, lingo and tactics - as well as tremendous bonus features - toy catalog excerpts, action figure file cards and essays by experts.

529 Richard Hatch. Also star of the RiffTrax feature "Prisoners of the Lost Universe". RIP, man...

I love the old Marvel lore, but I've got no interest in any of the current comics. Plus, some genius in that braintrust decided to cancel Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (a great cartoon paying tribute to the classics) after only a single great season. ...And a second crappier season that's not worth talking about....

530 #527 Is Reich standing on a stool?

Posted by: torabora at February 07, 2017 09:20 PM (Q1UO3)

531 Aagh. Late as usual, and comics are one of my primary loves.

I was once a "weekly Wednesday" buyer. That ended about five years ago. Still have full runs of a lot of titles.

Suddenly, I shifted to buying trade collections only, and then abandoned Marvel/DC for independent titles, mostly Image. And with that publisher's track record for producing books on time, I haven't bought a TC in months.

But what really drove me away from the Big Two was the constant push for events, plus the concept of franchise titles. One Avengers book was enough; we didn't need six. Glad I bailed before the real SJW crap hit.

I'm not offended by introducing more diverse characters; it's the pushing aside of established ones that stuck in my craw. And I'm not bothered that so many writers be lefty loons. (Chuck Dixon can't write everything!) I'd rather have them write fiction than policy. Doesn't mean I'll scramble to hand my money to them, either. Nick Spencer, you just joined the list. God knows whom I would zap if I used Twitter.

Well. This turned into quite a ramble. Edit or post?

Aw hell -- this late? Post.

532 >Out of curiosity, has anyone seen the Doctor Strange movie from last year? What did you think of it?

Loved it. Took my 75 year old mother to see it! Was a hoot! Marvel does well with its movie franchise, DC with its TV franchise. Fox has no idea how to manage the Marvel characters it has.

533 I stopped collecting comics after Bush II was elected. I have 60 boxes of the frickin' things that have moved all over the country with me.

The SJW was creeping in then. They were fun to read when I was a kid in the late 70's and 80's, but they're drivel now, especially after the grim and grittiness of the 90's and the crap they put out now. Make them fun again, and sales will rise.

Posted by: Devil-Slayer at February 07, 2017 09:45 PM (wCrZF)

534 Devil-Slayer (I wonder WHERE you got that name) --

Mark Waid said of his move to California that with all if his comics and collectibles, he -- a single guy -- was rated by the mover as a family of six.

Posted by: Weak Geek at February 07, 2017 09:51 PM (oyUDM)

535 Marvel's problems (the SJW stuff isn't the whole issue) are multiple. Too many events, and too many of them are just absolutely suckfests. Constant rebooting of series and not enough focus on getting good writers (and keeping them). Way too much silly changing things just for the sake of changing them. And some of the character mixups have been good but for STUPUD in universe reasons (3 fucking years and we still don't know the bullshit reason Thor got changed?). And then some are just the stupidest ones in the history of ever (you turned Steve Rogers, Captain America, into a fucking secret nazi? WHAT?). That and they decided to double down on stupid and raise their prices and remove digital copies from buying physical.

At least the movies have enough existing IP to survive for a while as the comics division circles the drain and continues to think insulting their audience and making baffling decisions will be the road to success.

536 Grim 'n' gritty was one of the first signs of rot. More realistic, fine, but the creators went too far.

I contend that if the fan boys who demanded GnG were to find themselves in the worst part of town after 9 p.m., they'd shit their pants.

540 According to some, the SJWs have succeeded in getting the IMDB to shut down their message boards because some posters hurt their widdle feewings.

Posted by: Bilwick at February 08, 2017 02:42 PM (xDoHK)

541 I should care about this less than I do. But I enjoyed the 'old school' versions of all the characters and have been cringing every time the SJWs throw another bizarre forced "re-imagining" (read: needless diversification and leftist agenda) onto a classic, and this is my shocked face that it's hurt their sales. So, superheroic schadenboner over this.

Hey comic writers/artists - dying for a LGBTQXPLZNJ tri-racial girl superhero? Try coming up with a new character and writing a story that's actually entertaining. Don't just decide you get to hijack Green Lantern and make him Pink Glow-Dildo.
