Lena DumDum: I Lost Weight Because Trump Judges Women's Bodies or Something

There'll be so much winning, you'll get tired of all the winning.

"Donald Trump became president and I stopped being able to eat food," she told Stern after he complimented her look. "Everyone's been asking like, 'What have you been doing?' And I'm like, 'Try soul-crushing pain and devastation and hopelessness and you, too, will lose weight.'"

The actress, who was on hand to promote the upcoming sixth and final season of Girls, has not been shy about her dislike for the President, and apparently, the feeling is mutual.

"He said I was a B-list actor with no mojo," Dunham told Stern...

Oh by the way, the Special Snowflakes are upset that Dunham talked about weight loss in such an unsafe way.

"An eating disorder is a deadly illness, not a political prop, @lenadunham, you unfathomably insensitive narcissist," wrote another woman on Twitter.

Other woke writers appeared to disagree. One writer at the feminist blog Refinery29 supported Dunham for speaking out about her weight loss, but chided Stern for bringing up weight in the first place.

"Election-related stress is very real, as is disordered eating," she wrote. "So while you might think your words are well-meaning, the reason behind someone’s weight loss might not be a happy one. Unless a friend brings up their weight on their own, it’s a good topic to avoid in conversation."

One thing about this mass hysteria about weight loss: People are always warning people not to lose weight based upon the conditions of anorexia, bulemia, and body dysmorphia (seeing your body as very heavy when it's actually low weight) which afflict a very, very small segment of the population.

And for those people, it is important to tell them "Stop losing weight. You're already underweight."

But 98% of people who think they're overweight, like myself, think that because we are in fact objectively, demonstrably, mathematically overweight.

And yet we're peddling a message which applies to 2% of the population towards the 40% of the population which is overweight or obese, and telling them "Don't lose weight! You'll DIE!!!!"

That's also very unhealthy, isn't it? Encouraging diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, etc., for 40% of the population in order to protect the 2% of the population with a body dysmorphia issue?

And at any rate, Lena Dunham is very far from reaching some kind of dangerously low weight, as this picture can attest.

7 'Try soul-crushing pain and devastation and hopelessness and you, too, will lose weight.'"

You want to know what soul-crushing pain and devastation is? It was the death of my husband of 37 years. And yes, I did lose weight. You know what is not soul-crushing pain and devastation? Having your candidate lose in a Presidential election. If she'd experienced some real loss, she might be able to tell the difference.

10 This worries me greatly. If these feminists seriously lose weight, some of them might start to become attractive. And if they become attractive, more men might start to listen to what they're saying in the hopes of getting laid.

Might be a grave tactical error on Trump's part. If this keeps up, it could be an early night.

15 Ugh. I'd rather talk about Jenna Jameson, who was a real cutie in her early career and a fine actress in most of her scenes. (She didn't have on-screen O's so that's all her playing let's-pretend)

But, more on topic, we have a sedentary and entertainment focused society. Most of us are fat and getting fatter. That's why I treasure the Gainz thread so much for keeping me focused and fasting.

Now it's "I can't eat."

Everything she writes pivots on such girly cliches!

It doesn't have appeal. The highest viewers it gets according to Wikipedia is 1 million. And it's average is more like 600,000.

Compare that to Game of Thrones where season 1 was its lowest watched with over 2 million for each episode. And its later seasons are in the 6-8 million range.

There were some fun moments in the first season of Girls, then it was overkill. She missed an important lesson from Sex & the City, the obvious prototype for her show: Leave politics out of it, and you'll attract a bigger audience. Had a friend of a friend in college who had anorexia. The woman looked like she just got out of a concentration camp but insisted that she was fat.

This is not a normal weight loss thing. It is truly a mental condition and has nothing to do with losing weight. You don't "catch" anorexia by someone saying, "Hey tubby, you might want to put that donut down".

Oh yeah maybe Sex and the City would be a better comparison to ratings for it. Maybe from a time when fewer people had HBO too. Unfortunately Wikipedia only has viewers for it for a single season and not all of them. And the average for that season (Season 4) of Sex and the City is! About 5-6 million viewers. So again the comparison: Sex and the City: 5 million - Girls: 600,000.

One of these things is not like the other.

383 The interesting thing about the Intel AZ story is ..... why AZ, instead of, say, the home state of CA? Didn't Intel in recent years decide to build a fab in OR, vs. CA, and fail to conceal that the reasons were because of CA's absurd hostility to manufacturing?

Also, these tech companies signing on to opposition to the lawful Trump EO - WTFF? It has no bearing whatsoever on what they care about - H1Bs - so I am at a loss to understand the reasoning.

Were I Trump I'd be sending messages to these companies, that are members of his business council, asking whether it's really appropriate for them to be members, given their apparent disregard for the rule of law, and their own country.

And then, being Trump, I'd do a blistering Twitter comment about them, to up the PR ante.

It's two things:

-- The majority of headline "tech" companies these days don't have all that much actual tech going on. They *use* technology aggressively, but technology isn't the business per se, merely an enabling vehicle for the business. They're infotainment concerns not all that far removed from the likes of Hollyweird, and hence prone to the same sort of liberal virtue signalling.

-- They're worried that the EOs might in fact expand, a camel's nose circumstance, to further restrictions, including the H-1Bs upon which they have come to rely for dirt cheap labor, even though H-1Bs aren't part of this particular EO.

452 The constellations are only relevant from an earth-based perspective.

Yeah, I don't recall that being used in Trek. Now, in some old 50's era SF movies, I can see an alien using that to explain to an Earther/Earthan/Earthican/Earthian, but that's not at all what you said.

And of course, Men in Black.

(Star Wars, no of course not.)

Constellations *are* (or at least were) something of a Doctor Who thing, though. Considering how they threw around "galaxy" it's possible the writers were ignorant and/or inconsistent in their usage. (See also "star system," "planetary system" "system of planets" etc.)

The Doctor claimed that Gallifrey was in the constellation of Kasterberorus IIRC, which, not being a real constellation... Who knows?

Some chance the Trojan Hellenes weren't even related to classical Greeks, better chance modern Greeks aren't. Butt, still.

If Star Trek is techno-flavored scifi (which it really is), then Doctor Who is a fever dream of every genre ever mashed into one generally delightful British packaged.

Also, to climb atop one of my hobby horses, anyone who tells you that Star Trek is hard scifi is dumb and should not be listened to.

It's occasionally touched hard scifi on individual episodes, but the science is so generally awful and the rules around really basic things on the show like transporters and warp drive change so frequently, that it's really just techno fantasy.

===================

It's that type of scifi that's more social commentary than, you know, science fiction.

There's room in science fiction for holding up the mirror to contemporary social issues, but when people describe Star Trek as hard scifi I just laugh.

Hard scifi is usually written by Ph.D.'s or those who actually read scientific journals to include cutting edge scientific ideas into their work. Arthur C. Clarke did this with things like computers (2001) or the space elevator (Fountains of Paradise).

Quite literally, Star Trek writers wrote scenes and included the word "Tech" for a science consultant to fill in with a technical term that sounded or could possibly be right given the context of the situation. In essence, a veneer of science over social commentary.

No one made the argument here, but I've seen it come up in other circles and found my opening to mount that hobby horse.

Star Trek has decent musical themes. The words Roddenberry tried to put to the original theme, though? Vogonesque. At least at the level of the Azgoths of Kria.

529 519 No one is going to quibble over the sci-fi comment on star trek. A hell of a lot will over the use of 'mount' and 'horse' in the same sentence on a thread about Lena Dunham.

C'mon, everybody knows that's spelled supposably.

531 "The words Roddenberry tried to put to the original theme, though? Vogonesque."

I seem to recall reading somewhere that adding lyrics (even lyrics that won't be used) to a theme song increases the royalties to the song's author.

533 "Star Trek was supposebly pitched as Wagon Train in space."

I heard that's exactly how Roddenberry pitched it. There's a core cast on a journey that creates a new situation each week with a bunch of one-time characters and then moves on. Except in space, not the old West.

Six Feet Under started this way and then shifted to only caring about the family

Posted by: Ignoramus at February 08, 2017 02:46 PM (SIY7D)

534 But it's not, usually, technically fantasy, not even in the Star Wars sense. Mostly its science is just, you know, *wrong*. (Especially biology. Don't get me started.)

Posted by: Lance McCormick at February 08, 2017 02:36 PM (u0s1P)

Star Trek Next Generation had a kind of subteam of screenwriters whose specialty was futuristic, sciency-sounding gobbledygook. The regular screenwriters would turn over the copy to this team to fill in the blanks with cool-sounding, quasi-believable bullshit.

I don't think any ST-related movie or show ever pretended to be hard science science fiction. It was always space opera, which is fine.

That was Lilek's take as well.

536 The thing about 'true hard sci-fi' is that it has the tendency to be... what's the word I'm looking for... bone dry boring.

Yeah, that's true, and those often get conflated. Isaac Asimov once wrote an essay about the difference between different types of SF. Okay, he wrote a bunch, but the one I'm thinking of distinguished Jules Vernian-style stories, which are really about the science or technology, and Wellsian, which are about the story, and the science/tech is there for the sake of the story.

Obviously, that's simplistic, and few (good) stories will be entirely one or the other, but it's an interesting distinction.

I would call it fantasy the same way that I'd call Star Wars fantasy, sure. It just makes a slightly harder effort to appear to be scientifically accurate while being just about as scientifically accurate as The Force.

I guess there's a difference between style and substance, then. Star Wars is stylistically fantasy-- change lightsabers into magic swords and the Death Star into a dragon, and boom, it's a Tolkein ripoff.

Star Trek is very much science fiction, even if the science is bad or worse. (Many old sf stories are still good stories, even if they take place in '1982' or have outdated notions of planetary environments or whatever.)

Posted by: Lance McCormick at February 08, 2017 02:50 PM (u0s1P)

537 522: I think Star Trek is about as hard as you can get without turning the general public off and or being vulnerable to studio heads screwing things up. Babylon 5 was harder and it just barely finished its run. Firefly was pretty hard as far as Sci-Fi went and it got killed.

538 I seem to recall reading somewhere that adding lyrics (even lyrics that won't be used) to a theme song increases the royalties to the song's author.

I've read that too, and given all the behind-the-scenes shenanigans around Star Trek back in the day... Oooh, boy. (I'm sure there are different shananigans in the post Roddenberry era, but obviously his role in them is diminished.)

Posted by: Jackal at February 08, 2017 02:52 PM (7Tc8n)

====================

Firefly could barely be called scifi either.

It was more western than anything else. The science wasn't important to any part of the show.

541 536: Bingo. And you can do the same thing with Doctor Who as Star Wars. The sci fi elements are really just McGuffins and the Doctor may as well be a wandering mage with a magical (fill in the blank) that takes him to strange places.

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at February 08, 2017 02:57 PM (tHwdc)

543 539: Yeah, but my point was that the science part of the series was relatively grounded and logical. The show was a space western through and through. The issue they ran into was the preconception people have about Sci Fi: they want whiz bang futuristic shit with FTL and space battles.
