More #FakeNews: Over Weekend, Lefty Reporters When Apeshit Retweeting Iraqi War Vet Who Claimed His Mom Died Due to Trump's Travel Ban.
He Lied.

But Journolizm.

A war contractor who claimed President Trump’s controversial travel ban caused his mother to die in Iraq lied about the circumstance.

Imam Husham Al-Hussainy, head of the Karbalaa Islamic Educational Center in Dearborn, Mich. told WJBK-TV that Mike Hager's mother died five days before Trump issued the executive order.

He confirmed Hager's 75-year-old mother had been treated in Detroit, where she lived, for kidney disease before traveling to Iraq to visit family.

Several people attempted to talk to me about the media freaking out this weekend. They were upset -- the media's constant screaming puts some's nerves on edge.

I tended to cut them short. I didn't want to hear it.

Here is what I would have told them, if I had thought it through.

There is no point to getting upset about any media story because recent history has demonstrated they're false 98% of the time.

John Ekdahl tweeted the media's schedule -- 9am to 12 pm, scream hysterically about various claims gotten from fired Intelligence Community and State Department Staff.

From 3pm to 6pm -- sheepish and begrudging retractions of everything they'd screamed about earlier.

This is, as the Simpsons say, funny because it's true.

I think Ekdahl lowballed it, though: I think it's now fake news for 2-3 days, then start the retractions, which, get very much this, aren't retweeted with nearly the same fury by leftist journOlists as the #FakeNews they spread far and wide.

It has been a blogger's habit to chase the news as it occurs. I see less and less of a point in that any longer, as the initial news -- first six hours, maybe the first three days -- is almost entirely fictitious.

Yes, some bloggers do a good job of keeping up with the cycle and batting down lies as they're revealed. And good on them.

I'm just not sure I'm personally interested in doing this. I know -- know -- that our Dedicated Priests of the Truth are going to spend 24 to 72 hour simply lying to people about what the "facts" are.

Why should I even bother to keep up with their fictions? I don't watch a lot of tv shows because i'm not interested in keeping up with crap some Hollywood scenarists just made up to advance a dramatic narrative.

Now that the "news" is the same, why should I bother watching? Or reacting? Or feeling anything about it, except spiting contempt?

More: The left is in full-blown hysteria, and hysteria is contagious. Literally. People spread their hysteria virally. We're animals, and when one animal in the heard is spooked, the next gets spooked, until they're all spooked.

Don't let the left's hysteria and lunacy infect you. You owe it to yourself to be happy and calm, not frazzled by the leftist JournOList's daily freakouts.

More: From Alex the Chick:

This story is a great example of that. Why wasn't her date of death confirmed prior to the publication of the initial story?

Well. Because that would disturb the Narrative!

Too good to check!

I do find it interesting that the station grudgingly went back and checked after a bunch of people said this couldn't possibly be true. At least there's an instant dude no response by some people.

Exactly. This is like Josh Rogin's claim that the entirety of the State Department's very most senior management had resigned en masse, an entirely unprecedented event with dark foreboding for the future of the Republic.

Then, a day later, someone somewhere contacted someone at State and got the response: "This happens every change of Administration. It's supposed to happen. This is routine."

But Joshy got his clicks and his beloved Narrative spread.

The reporter, Amy Lange, is a generic reporter-- she looks pretty and is good at reading the teleprompter. There's limited fact checking going on, since they're on the air in the morning from 4:30 am to noon with no breaks.

19 Upon discovery that their traditional source is unreliable, a lot of people turn to whatever seems to confirm their impressions. Which is also unreliable. Whether your "alternate" is Mother Jones or Prison Planet.

The real, honest, everyday answer for *most* people is "I don't know, and I don't have a good way of finding out."

This is psychologically unacceptable, so we end up with all kinds of mad factions certain that they have a handle, at least roughly, on what's going on... when they don't.

Really, really grokking how people end up living in a cave on a mountain.

I look at a large number of sources, judging over time how likely they are to go batshit, and compare items against each other over time.

Even so, I frequently look back and find out *everyone* got something wrong.

At one point, I went about a year without even turning it on. So I did.

And it was like time freaking stopped. Teacher strikes. Young kid killed in drive by shooting. Sports teams doing crappy. Here's weather!

It's not even "Law and Order." It's seasonally adjusted "Law and Order."

summer: fun things to do around town stories
fall: teacher strike stories
winter: potholes and winter storms + football

47 Is this the story that was initially spread by the NYT and everybody else picked up on.

I automatically assume any story pushed by the NYT carries a 99.9% probability that it is a lie. The same goes for CNN and NBC. I give ABC a 90% probability depending on whether it is from AP or one of the other news generators. I give CBS a 89% probability. Faux gets a 75% probability still low but better than the rest.

This is truly sad.

It's like a drag net, whoever sees the lie (and not the update that it was indeed a lie) is caught in the net. Good for the Fake News groups. If they see a reversal, it adds to confusion, so the lie still sticks somewhat. Still good for those spitting out the Fake News.

It's too easy to lie with the speed of the news, and the variety of news outlets.

72 I don't think any *outlet* is trustworthy. Occasionally you find *people* who are trustworthy reporters, but they are almost never on breaking news because trustworthy takes time.

And connected with Gell-Mann Amnesia, a trusted source on one topic may be untrustworthy on other subjects, either from prior exposure to agendas or simply ignorance.

Also, some people can literally be objective on one topic and go alpha-sierra on another, because they have a personal obsession.

Crowdsourcing sounds like a good solution, until you realize that crowds are idiots.

Unreliability (ignorance and agendas) is the shabby, rotting foundation on which the Information Economy stands.

97 Also... a reminder. Your local Fox news is affiliated with Fox. Yes, they might go to Fox News when there is a national emergency, but they are locally controlled.

So the local Fox affiliate in Dallas is probably going to be a lot more conservative than the Fox affiliate in Chicago.

Although the news on your local Fox station might show clips of Neil Cavuto, it's just to fill up time. Many are just as left leaning as MSNBC; remember, Rupert Murdoch supported Hillary, and Ailes is gone at Fox News.

It's gotten a lot worse around here over the last bunch of years.

I've railed about this before here, but why not again?

It's all lecturing and hectoring and health news that someone probably found online.

Several years ago they had a 4pm news on one channel (it's gone now) and they had a segment where they'd read tweets on the air.

Most of the fluff stories are just packaged crap they buy from a service and the airhead does a reading of the script so they can do a voice over later.

Even the look of the news set and the websites are packages they buy. Take a look at various news sites from around the country and you'll see how often they look exactly the same.

The death of local news comes from them being bought up by a big corporation who proceeds to squeeze pennies until they scream.

It's good for the bottom line but awful for people who want to know what is going on in their community.

The local government could be stealing everything that isn't nailed down and we'd never know about from these asshats. Same goes for the local newsrag which is teetering on full blown collapse. No money left to do anything serious.

You know, I wish I could say I agree, but that's just not my experience.

From what I've been able to ascertain, here's the basic thoughts behind tv news producers:

1. Fill up X hours of air time
2. Can we get stuff for free somewhere? Great. We'll do a five-minute feature on using a Neti Pot, use the daily Cavuto package and do a live talk back with someone from the network about whatever they feel like talking about.
3. Fill time with sports
4. Fill time with weather
5. Fill time with traffic reports

This is what the executives are thinking:

1. Is there food in the newsroom? I want some.
2. Is there food from the morning show? Why didn't one of my sycophants bring me some?

192 In the early Internet news days, I got a headline changed on ABC news, the top headline that morning. It was reporting about violence the Aceh province of Indonesia.

The headline reported it as religious violence between Christians and Muslims. I happen to know firsthand that there are no Christians in Aceh province, to speak of. Some Chinese catholics, a few Bataks that have wandered in and not found their way out yet. But it's a province in Indonesia that has Sharia law, and they are pretty ruthless toward Christians.

So I wrote to the guy whose byline was on the article, which was linked to an email address, and let him know that the violence was between the rebel faction GAM and the Indonesian government, as it has been since the early 90's or even before that.

To his credit, he changed the story. But I also asked him how I was to trust again what he wrote; I happen to have information about this one instance that led me to not believe the story, but I know jack about other areas and stories.

His reply was honest--he relied on his senior editor catching stuff since the senior editor was from Australia, which is in the same hemisphere as Indonesia. And apologized for the mistake but they are under pressure, blah blah.

I was surprised at the honesty of his apology, but it really fixed nothing in terms of my confidence in anyone's reporting. Was really the day my eyes opened on reporting.

195 Ace: "Why should I even bother to keep up with their fictions?"

Exactly. When one realizes the MFM's "news" isn't really news, one finds a lot more time on one's hands being more productive getting less misinformation. It also focuses one's mind into censoring away all the BS and finding ways to undermine the classical datastreams by ignoring them, insulting them, and supporting/financing any and every other outfit that is not the MFM.

Legacy media has no idea how to stop digging its own grave and I've quit trying to provide suggestions on how they might regain status or credibility. More than they won't, they simply cannot. 238 Old, large, sometimes family-business or patronage-run papers, while often serving the agenda of their masters, would also have specialists who actually *specialized* in their area of knowledge, and thus would produce less absolute diarrhea than modern J-school-only reporters.

Ideally, you would have a large, *very* transparent organization, to the extent where even memos and e-mails (redacted on rare occasion) would be made public regarding stories.

Most of the media have a personal investment in maintaining narratives, so there's little chance they will change before the whole thing just goes tit-over-tea-kettle.

I'm convinced by 2020 Google News will have AI survey systems that call up people in an area and interview them to generate stories.

"Hello, This is Google News, I've heard there was a transport strike in your area. Do you have time for some questions?"

No more likely to be screwed over by the TSA than last month.

Pure propaganda... why wouldn't they go?

The *only* issue might be if they have dual citizenship with one of the seven countries *and* their home country. Unless they're also a citizen here (I'm not sure you can have three... though Guiness Records might have a category for that).

289 The bucket thing is not my preference for how Trump handles the media. Sure, it is one way to go. But I have a better solution.

Trump needs to troll them.

Set up a series of polices that split the media down the middle - a thing they want to have happen accomplished using a method they hate.

For example, defund all climate change studies and meetings, and shift all the money to buying solar panels placed on the homes of middle income people.

Or, ban for a week any reporters who tweets incorrect information out. Say you are trying to reduce the spread of fake news to the public.

I can think of a few others, but you get the idea. Always it should involve a loss of power and prestige for progressives...at the cost of getting something tangible accomplished.

But if you want to hold the white house accountable for getting the facts right, why not hold you own company accountable?"
