Orrin hosta Mans Up, Rewrites Committee Rules to Permit Votes on Nominees Despite Democratic Boycott

I guess under the rules, they couldn't vote because they didn't have a quorum or something.

After the Democrats kept not showing up for votes, hosta must have gotten a little annoyed, because the Committee just re-wrote its rules to permit a vote without Democrats present. Brandon Finnigan is calling this a "mini-nuke," and this might be a predictor of the future with respect to Gorsuch.

So Mnuchin and Price have been voted out of committee and will now get a floor vote.

Meanwhile, Jeff Sessions was not subject to this childish boycott tactic, but all Democrats voted against him. But on a committee with a Republican majority, that means he's going to the floor for a vote.

More: Orrin hosta was especially annoyed that while the Republicans were assembling for the scheduled committee vote, the boycotting Democrats were just down the hall, having a press conference/stunt.

Well, the Republic functioned without them for a long time.

The only real difference now is that the federal government has a much larger say in the lives of everyday Americans.

Maybe in time, the effects of this breakdown will convince more and more Americans to wrest more and more power from the federal government. Until then, though, expect pain and hope for the best.

I'm really not surprised at all. The Dems were over the top arrogant when they were in power and broke all sorts of traditions in both the House and the Senate to ram through appointments and laws.

I never thought that the Republicans were happy about it or just going along, they had no power to stop much of it just as the Democrats don't know. Payback is a bitch.

If Republicans did this same thing, if there were no real material concerns they could express to the public after the very extensive vetting process, I would hope democrats would slam their dick in the door too.

People are tired of this shit where Congress bottles the process up for politics.

Someone tried to make the comparison of Gina McCarthy in Obamas EPA. But what they left out is she lied before Congress , demonstrably, multiple times. But Democrats moved her forward anyway.

So, with my pondering cap on, and my pipe a-bubbling, I'm concluding that the Democrats are being pushed into a corner by their most extreme base members and are being forced to give up all of the protections the rules provide for the minority to keep the extremists appeased. The problem is that the extremists can never be appeased and when you run out of space they will still destroy you.

Whatever. The important thing is something finally got done instead of waffling for a week and then folding like a cheap suit.

192 I don't think this rule change really matters. The GOP and GOPe still has old-fashioned ideas about civility and probably never tried to delay a vote in the same fashion as the Democrats.

However, we now have a President that leads and, just possibly, a GOP and GOPe that has finally realized that if they want to stay in power, they best get with the program. Plus, the Dems have kept pushing and pushing and it just never ends well when you push a patient person too far.

This was someone else's idea from a week ago or so and I cannot recall whose unfortunately, because they really deserve credit:

I would absolutely delight if they would simply show text and footage behind him of Democrats doing and saying exactly what Trump did, while the press squirmed in joy, and show the sycophantic worship of the press toward Obama. Just show that stuff during press conferences. Show their hypocrisy and pathetic behavior, without comment.

Every time some jackwagon reporter asks a question they never asked of Obama or about something previously considered just fine, show their hypocrisy on the screen behind him. Text from Schumer's 2015 speeches on immigration as they ask about Trump being mean to Schumer, etc.

Disagree. The rules were a poison pill; instead of preventing secret meeting s, which was the intent, they gave the minority party limitless power to obstruct.

As long as the majority party votes en bloc, the outcome is a foregone conclusion. The rules have not been changed to allow this to be done in secret; they just no longer permit the obstruction.

260 It doesn't matter. Each house of Congress sets its own rules.

Any majority at any time can change those rules IF THEY HAVE THE WILL.
============

Rules in the House and Senate are created in a "mutually assured destruction" mode. They remain in force for as long as both parties understand the consequences of breaking them.

The Dems have moved so far Left that for them the philosophy of Madison's constitutional "checks and balances" was willfully and ruthlessly undermined because they were seen as impediments on their march to unlimited power in the executive branch. IOW, the Democrats during the Obama Years, with the connivance of a courtier MSM, broke the MAD agreement with extreme prejudice because of their unquestioned belief that Barry would be followed by Hillary.

I hope that they force one, Trump makes it as painless as possible and waits them out, all the while going out to the public saying, "See? You're lives aren't being negatively impacted by not having 90% of the EPA at work for a few weeks. Do we really need them?"

So far, the left is taking all of the wrong lessons away from their losses, and show no signs of learning. But I think they are kind of locked into it right now by their allegiance to a certain worldview and the Alinskyite doctrine.

Trump isn't using Alinsky's approach. He's taking a flamethrower to the entire structure. He's not making people live up to their own standards etc. He's just ignoring it all and going full speed ahead.

292 Interesting move by the Dems. And ultimately very foolish.

A couple of years ago, I did a brief comparison of Republican and Democratic tactics to slow the vote on nominees. IIRC, the Dems preferred to tie the nominee up in the committee, while the Republicans preferred to wait until the nominee was in front of the entire Senate. It appears that the Dems got a bit too complacent, and decided to take their usual tactics a step too far.

Good for Hatch. There's no excuse for a sitting Senator to completely skip out like this.

Posted by: junior at February 01, 2017 01:59 PM (nsZ+m)

293 Rules in the House and Senate are created in a "mutually assured destruction" mode. They remain in force for as long as both parties understand the consequences of breaking them.

That's the negative side, the positive side is both parties having a mutual understanding of respect and collegiality; sure, we're in opposite parties, but this is all one big club and we share the hookers and blow. They didn't change rules because they knew it would damage the mutual treatment.

But the Democrats threw all that out under Pelosi and Reid. They totally destroyed any sense of that balance. So its all out the window now.

Reap the whirlwind, Democrats. This was all your idea, because you believed Carville when he said Republicans will never be back in power for at least a generation.

Future ramifications are moot, because they will do whatever they need to anyway, precedent be damned.

Congress (and the media) has devolved to the point that they expect to have their asses kissed and that their support is "earned" by how well their ass is kissed and what favors and goodies they receive. They don't even comprehend that these people exist and are paid to do a job.

This is why I fully support Trump saying at inauguration that Washington no longer represents people.

355 Well now - its about time!

I think this shows that Trump is having a a real effect on the Repubs. Now way would we see this with any other GOPe president. The wining is infectious. I also believe that the Dimocrats really believed that it was going to be business as usual and that their playbook - obfuscate, use the press, scream hysterically, cry RAAAACIST and stamp their feet - with maybe be a little ACLU lawsuit thrown in - would make Trump roll back his EOs and make the repub in the Senate run for cover. The fact that this has not only NOT happened but the opposite is taking place gives me hope. As I said to Ms. Redux - these guys are in for a surprise if they think Trump is going to roll back his EO on immigration. Not. Going. To. Happen.

Now if we could get #nevrtrumper idiots like Allahpundit and Patterico to stop acting like journolist wieners running with every made up "Trump outrage" or "trump chaos" made up MSM story (and, no, whoever had this argument in one of the previous threads, there is no gracious winning here - the #nevertrumpers have not stopped their stupidity and must be crushed and humiliated at every turn until they beg for mercy - beg for mercy as we put them out of their misery and they are eliminated form the public square for good, that is. Am I a blind Trump follower? - no. Could trump have done a bit of a better job at counterattacking the ginned up "outrage" over 109 people inconvenience by a travel rule change and a few hundred shipped-in, paid protestors (coordinated by idiots like Chuckie "clown" Shumer and f*cking retard Nadler and mostly in Democrat controlled states where they could get away with it?) . Meh - maybe - but the faux outrage was going tp be there anyway and the thought process that equates this scenarios with " chaos" or anything but what it was - a minor inconvenience for a small amount of mostly foreign nationals - is , simply put, part of the problem and an ally of the MSM and democrats and at this point. Want to criticize Trump ? - go ahead - but do it when he has actually done something worth criticizing from the standpoint of our side - NOT this.

Eyes on the prize people - the destruction of the SJW contingent of government and their allies - the left wing democrats - within our lifetime.

So, no "shutdown" (which was always a fake stunt, the audacity and idiocy of which underlined the degraded state of not just the civic culture but the GOP).

Don't forget - the fake shutdown was a direct result of the GOP refusing to take action, in the last Congress, to nuke the Dem obstructionism (in the way Hatch just did at his committee). It was obstruction of a far higher and more outrageous sort that the Dems did on the appropriations process.

At the time, so was I. I didn't vote for the man, he didn't earn it. Just being better than the other even worse choice wasn't enough for me. President Trump is turning out -- so far -- to be a far better man than candidate Trump was, particularly in the primaries.

I've never in my life ever known a president to govern more conservative than he campaigned. This is new territory for us all, like sailing to a distant undiscovered land.

Ace, like a lot of us I think, knew that we would come down to a candidate. That candidate, no matter who we chose, would be better than Hillary! (as much as it pains me to give any credit to that spineless mass of tofu- even Jeb.) As long as the primaries were going on, we could vote for whomever we thought would do the best job, and argue for or against the candidates based on that.

Add to this that Trump had a non-PC approach- much more so than the other candidates- and I remember Ace mentioning approving things of at least Trump's style on podcasts early in the Primary cycle.

Once the primaries were over, we pretty much all decided that even if we did not like the guy- it was absolutely essential that Hillary! not be elected.

Everything since the election is cream, and the bonds have been broken as far as the primaries go a long time ago.

In the progressive view, once they get the law they want, it can never be changed.

This move by Hatch shows that Obamacare can be repealed; just do it.

590 I saw a 2-CD set once that I really wanted and Amazon had it listed at 79.00. I knew that wasn't close to right so I checked the band's website and saw that I could just get it straight from them for 15.00, and autographed too.

I messaged the band about the Amazon error and they (or whoever manages their website) messaged me back that it was definitely a mistake and they would contact Amazon immediately. And thanked me for bringing it to their attention. They even got back to me to tell me Amazon had corrected it before they even contacted them.

To repeal most of it requires 60 votes, so they can't just bring it up.

The sidecar that Democrats passed after the special election in Massachusetts can be repealed with 50, but the original Senate bill that the House approved, and was passed in the Senate before Ted Kennedy died, originally passed with 60.

My point being, there's more work to do than a simple bill that can pass with 50 votes.

Labour whips to vote Leave, more Labour front-benchers quit.

Existential crisis for Labour, lots of Welsh and northern England seats voted very heavily Leave in the referendum but their MPs were nominally Remainers. They could not vote Remain now and expect to hold their seat, and if they lose the seat suddenly Labour's a nuisance party behind UKIP and what's left of the LibDems.
