Yeah...ignore the title of this video. "The Most Interesting Plays In MLB" it ain't. I would call it a bunch of amusing plays. An interesting baseball play, at least for me, has to include some athleticism, some good or bad baseball sense, and if you toss in a weird rule it makes it that much better. What? Bacteria that are resistant to a particular antibiotic are common. But for many reasons -- agricultural use, overuse in the clinical setting, etc -- the number of multi-drug resistant bacteria is increasing. Multi-drug resistant bacteria in China is a harbinger of very bad things to come, because this particular bacteria is resistant to some very powerful drugs. Without huge investment in drug research, we may very well be in for some bad times. And that's why I never get particularly exercised by the "obscene profits" of drug companies. Free association is part of the bedrock of a truly free society, and it has been systematically undermined for the last 100 years (at least). Silencing The Opposition, from a Moron no less, discusses the issue. I don't agree completely, but it's worth a read.
I would also argue that all Americans of every group should be entitled under our laws regarding free association, to exclude from their company anyone they desire, and for any reason they desire it. Black groups should be entitled to exclude whites and vice versa. Businesses should be allowed to do the same if they're willing to pay the price for it. If a black owned business wants to exclude whites and cater to just 11% of the population with their business, I believe that is their right. White groups and businesses should be allowed to do the same. The only exception to this rule should be government, which should be required to provide the same service to all citizens regardless of what groups they belong to. But government should not be required to provide equal service to non-citizens. They didn't legally buy it; they shouldn't get to use it. If you want to go crazy and offer government service to legal residents, I'll probably quibble on which services, but I'm open to discussion on it.

We implemented a solution on society that banned not only government discrimination, but also private discrimination.
One of the core problems here though is that we really didn't end government discrimination, or more specifically political leaders generations ago left the door open for what we see today - where the government discriminates against Caucasians, men, heterosexuals, and Christians.
Of late the government-media-business complex has started using the private sector in a coordinate effort to discriminate against those groups as well.
Should people have a complete right to freedom of association? Of course. Remember, that was never really the issue...
But any serious movement in this direction would be incredibly painful politically. It is far wiser to approach this from the opposite direction. The Trump administration should start going after women's only clubs, black colleges, etc, for discrimination.
Make the government-media-business complex live by its own rules...

In the space program, loosing crew was a huge public relations disaster, and everyone opposed to the huge waste of money spent for nothing while poor oppressed people of color were starving left government decision makers adrift with no good answer. Especially when those government decision makers had no idea what to do with the space program.
In contrast, everyone understood why they needed maritime commerce, and any loss of life was of less significance than the loss of commerce. Sure, there were scapegoats, but people still went to sea in ships for the money.

Ceremony was intimate feeling. Mrs IMG, grandson the elder, and I stood about 12 feet from where the wreaths were laid. I did have to retrieve him from mingling with the dignitaries immediately prior to the ceremony. BG Strand represented President Trump. Took grandson to meet the gun crew afterwards. He now knows what a caisson is.

There are so many inside jokes in that movie, from Buck Henry pitching the sequel to The Graduate to all of the comments about tracking shots in the opening (which, I'm guessing, is actually the longest tracking shot in movie history), to a hundred others which I will not mention because *spoiler alert*.
For cameo appearances, you have Dick Mellen's party (look for Jack Lemmon playing the piano), then the breakfast scene at the restaurant (Charles Champlin with Burt Reynolds), and finally the closing scene of 'Habeas Corpus', where literally everybody shows up.
If I stopped watching every movie with a leftist douchnozzle in it, I would have nothing left to watch but Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson. Which, if entertaining, would get a bit boring after a while.
P.S. Tim Robbins in The Hudsucker Proxy is also well worth watching. Not specifically his performance, but the movie in general. The Coen Brothers greatest achievement.

The one I'm thinking about, the narrative goes : The General in charge wanted to show the techs working on a fuel leak how safe it was and ordered a chair brought out to the launch pad so he could sit at the base of the rocket and smoke his pipe while the crew worked to stop the fuel leak.

I was at Olive Garden recently. Maybe I'm going insane, but the food there was much better than I've ever had before.
They *finally* have an actual spicy garlic shrimp appetizer that is absolutely delicious. I hope it's not just another limited-time menu add. And the chocolate baci cake... for a few minutes, I didn't need a girlfriend anymore. ;-)

In the late 90's I remember that there was a rare nighttime landing and the space shuttle entered orbit at one end of the country and flew all the way across the US to land. You could see it's exhaust from horizon to horizon in central Texas. It looked like a blazing trail of fire. It was a very memorable landing for me.

I was taking a physics class in college when the accident happened, and the professor had retired from NASA. He was pissed at the whole shuttle program because he felt it did nothing to explore the solar system, and that the boosters were unsafe. The liquid fuel booster was just fine, but the solid fuel ones were an accident waiting to happen.
His reasoning was that if there was a problem with the liquid fuel booster, it could be shut off, released and the shuttle could return safely. The solid boosters? Once they were lit, they were lit and couldn't be controlled.
He was a proponent of the Big Dumb Booster.

I do a lot of composing in WordPad for cutting and pasting to a variety of databases and programs, and I do that because posting from one system to another means I get to carry bits of formatting around too.
I learned to put two spaces after a period, and it does help visually if the auto-formatting doesn't dick with what I do.
I hate helpful formatting and helpful programs. I want to have the final say in what I write and how I write it.

I was absolutely content with my acoustic and willing to wait to get an electric until I learned to be comfortable with playing. Then I saw this blue guitar and I was hooked.
Now I practice on the acoustic then hook up the electric and rock out for a while just for fun. Lucky for me, I have a good ear for music.

I'd like to get a drum machine too. There's one, the Alesis SA-16, that's been around since the 1980s and is considered one of the best, and it only costs like $150 new (less used0.

It's still correct for monospace (fixed-width) fonts, like with typewriters. For variable-width fonts, a single space after a period is correct.

I bought an Epiphone LP and I cannot say a bad thing about it. Between it and the Fender amp, I can get so many different sounds out of it, it is really unbelievable.
It's a great way to relax and get some tension out after a long day, I'll tell you that.

Having the ear is the majority of the battle. If you got that nothing will stop you. Its actually pretty smart to build strength with an acoustic, and then let fly on the electric. Those epi LPs actually play pretty good for the money. LP's are fun.

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the records of the Russian space program have been made public, and while there were a number of close calls, there don't seem to be any fatalities that were covered up.
There was one cosmonaut who burned to death in an oxygen chamber during training. It's too bad that wasn't publicized at the time, as it would have served as a warning to NASA and might have prevented the Apollo 1 fire.

No. Justified type means that the type on the right hand margin runs straight up and down, just like the left margin. The spacing between the letters and words is adjusted to achieve this effect.
The opposite of 'proportional font' is 'fixed pitch', which means that each letter occupies the same horizontal space. The way typewriters work ( I would say 'used to work', but I still have a couple of typewriters and that's the way they still do work).

Yeah, although my beer-drenched memory was thinking 'monotype' as word for it too.
And 'justification' regarding your dad's typesetting experience is how much space you put between words when you want the type to be flush-even on both sides of the column or page contrasted with flush left or flush right (aligning with only the left or right side of the page or column). With the flushes, you can use a fixed space between words; with justified columns/pages the amount of space between words on one line of type will vary because the proportional spacing means that if there are alot more wide letters (like 'W') in one line contrasted with narrower letters (like 'i') in the next, then the spaces between words will have to be different. (Sorry that's not a great explanation but I'm in a hurry.)
When we did an assignment for my typesetting training class for the one week of using old, cold metal type from a California Job Case, I only got 18 out of 20 on the handset justified text sample because I screwed up the spacing between letters and had used two hyphenated word-breaks. Apparently it was possible to do the same piece (20 lines I'd imagine) without resorting to hyphenating any of the words. And, of course, when putting space between words you don't want too little space or it's difficult to differentiate between words; or too much space that leaves too much (evil!) white space between words.

Yet, when the inevitable has sadly, happened, each and every one of those Engineers and Technicians has to do the hard thing, the gut-check, wondering if theirs was the fatal error, the critical mistake or failure to check that one, small, vital detail, that for a crew of likewise Supremely Confident Astronauts, was the hinge between this life, and the next.
NASA is but one element in a huge chain of what goes into each and every spaceflight.
It really comes down to prime contractors and subcontractors.
And finally, somewhere along the line, it always comes down to people. And sometimes, a person.
Who then have to live the rest of their days with that certain, dreadful knowledge that whatever they did that day, either in the factory, the clean room or the control room, sealed the fate of their launch, their capsule and so, the lives which were then in their hands.
I can think of few more sobering, dreadful and weighty responsibilities, than to be "sign-off" on a bit of work, a design, or even the orbital mathematics upon which ride even one life, much less a half-dozen or more.
The Right Stuff, is much more than an accurate descriptor of these people. It's also a massive, respectful understatement, withal.
"Where do we get such men?", Patton asked.
Same place as always. They're your neighbors, your friends, your classmates, sons and daughters, husbands and wives.
I think it's the same too, for the Russians. And it will be the same, when the Chinese suffer their losses, along with India and every other emergent spacefaring nation.
Pioneers gotta pioneer. Adventurers gotta adventure. And courageous men and women have to step out on the red carpet of fear, courageously.
Just as the law of the sea dictates that all mariners lay to and render aid to sailors of all flags, so must we all honor all who escape gravity in their thin, tiny and astonishingly fragile craft.
Truly, it is the only way to honor those that've gone before, and who've given their last true measure of devotion, in the doing.
And too, it includes their untold thousands who study, design, engineer and build their unique rockets and capsules and stations.
They're all pretty much at the Apex of what their nations can breed, educate, train and produce.
And rivals or not, it's an honor to have such worthy competition. We need it, in fact.
Champions require the Challenger.
May be we yet be worthy of her flight.

Make the Moonbase large enough, and it can be self-sustaining. Build greenhouses to grow crops, and to purify the air by recycling CO2 into plant tissue. Deals with the bodily waste issue, too. Oxygen could be "smelted" out of moon rocks, with metal also yielded.

I expect the Mars rovers are gathering data on the radiation environment on the surface of that planet. It might be that future mars colonists might have to live underground, and only venture out on the surface to do stuff.
If you could bulk up Mars' atmosphere, that would block much of the radiation. There have been suggestions to bombard Mars with comets, or icy debris filched from the rings of Saturn.

I had forgotten the composing stick! Yeah, I remember using that.
And when a huge page or pages of single-character lead type was dropped or otherwise knocked out of place, it was called 'pieing' a job because all of the characters had ended up being thrown all over the place (like the 'pied' in 'pied piper' clothing)!
I impressed the interviewers at my interview at Canada's largest magazine publisher by mentioning the cold-type work we had done to familiarize ourselves physically with what leading, kerning etc. really meant as an intro to the course mentioning that I hadn't pied my job. One of the guys said once back in the old days he recalled all the hullabaloo when someone pied several pages of some big job.
Most of our phototypesetting course was using a machine run by a punchcard-style tape; that would print the results on special paper; and then be dipped in a type of wax to be cut up and pasted down onto a card board (paste-up); then it would be photographed onto a the metal printing plate.
I can't recall if we did anything about hot-metal processes. Probably not as it was a phototypesetting course that was about replacing hot-metal.

The payload was TDRS 2 that gave us eyes in the sky. Russia wouldn't dare shoot down the shuttle with every child in the world excited about the first teacher in space. We were all on pins and needles leading up to the launch. When it exploded, we all assumed that it had indeed been shot down. Thankfully, that was not the case. It was a full year later before TDRS 2 was deployed.
She earned the right to be most remembered astronaut for that flight. She was a civilian and a much bigger hero than is widely known. She knew the risks and was an incredibly brave lady.

So get the magnetic field up again, and that's the first step to terraforming.

I passionately loved the original series, but haven't watched it in 30 years. So I've now forgotten the episodes.
First thought: OMG. They must have had so much fun doing this show, especially William Shatner. Today he's in the body of a hysterical woman! Now he's a mobster! Now he's kissing a green girl!
Second thought: Spock was kind of a douche. Yeah, he was a good person and all of that, but once and a while, you really wanted Dr. McCoy to just smack him.

I remember seeing the icicles hanging off of the boosters that morning - there had been an unusual freeze the night before - and thinking they shouldn't go up, but that mission had already been scrubbed I think 6 times, and the public was getting tired of waiting to see the first teacher in space.

It was one of the worst moments of my life. It changed the lives of both my husband and I. If you'll remember, everything was put on hold for a year. Even after the Memorial, the JSC was eerily quiet. I can't begin to express how depressing it was. After seven months of it, we accepted civvie jobs in another city.
We went back for the first time last summer. Nothing was as it once was. All of the contractor buildings had been replaced with neighborhoods. Even the streets had changed. The parking lots within NASA itself were near deserted. It was still just as sad to us 30 years later.

I remember reading a short snippet on the idea a while back. Apparently it was one of those ideas that would occur to someone every so often. Build the missile, use a nuclear reactor to power it, and leave the reactor unshielded so that it would irradiate the enemy's soil as it flew to the target.
Only one little problem - how do you test it?

Just occurred to me. Maybe they changed the designation because they lost 2 on the Challenger. We left before they launched the replacement, and I supposed the third one that was planned that would have been the fourth. Dunno, but that's what they called them when I was there.

One thing I really liked about the Expanse TV show was that it took as a matter of course the colonization of Mars and expansion into the solar system. It did not try to sugar coat it, but showed how and why something like that could be done.
I like the show, just not sure they have a real firmed up idea where they are going.

You all had better high school music to listen to. I remember listening to Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots. Of course, I never threw out the music my parents listened to, but for a couple rock ribbed conservatives, they listened to a lot of folksey type bands: Mamas and the Papas, Kingston Trio, Simon and Garfunkel, etc. Even then, I found it cloying at times.
