31 years ago today, the space shuttle Challenger (OV-099) broke apart 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral. All seven crew members were killed.

The engineering and management failures that led to the catastrophe are well known, in part because of the work of The Rogers Commission, which was formed by President Reagan to examine the causes and suggest solutions to the issues that caused the mechanical failure.

One of my heroes was on the commission that examined the accident (incident?). Richard Feynman was quite the physicist, but also quite the rigorous thinker, and he brought that to bear on the commission, to the point that he began to irritate the establishment members.

Yeah...ignore the title of this video. "The Most Interesting Plays In MLB" it ain't. I would call it a bunch of amusing plays. An interesting baseball play, at least for me, has to include some athleticism, some good or bad baseball sense, and if you toss in a weird rule it makes it that much better.

What? Is your intrepid host pining for baseball. Is he sick of the drivel and dreck that passes for entertainment when God's game isn't being played?

Why yes...he is.

The traditional Inaugural Ball dance and cake cutting with members of the armed forces is a lovely tradition, and President Trump and his elegant wife did not disappoint.....

Bacteria that are resistant to a particular antibiotic are common. But for many reasons -- agricultural use, overuse in the clinical setting, etc -- the number of multi-drug resistant bacteria is increasing. Multi-drug resistant bacteria in China is a harbinger of very bad things to come, because this particular bacteria is resistant to some very powerful drugs. Without huge investment in drug research, we may very well be in for some bad times. And that's why I never get particularly exercised by the "obscene profits" of drug companies. I want them to be awash in money. I want them to spend that money on drug research that will save our asses when we get sick.

Some of you may have noticed that the cataclysmic financial meltdown after a Trump victory predicted by our betters in the media wasn't quite as bad as they suggested. Here is an interesting interview with a man who is arguably America's top CEO (suck it GE!). Jamie Dimon on Trump, Taxes, and a U.S. Renaissance. The article is from December, but still; good stuff.

Orgasms used as sexual currency, research shows

Dr Diana Fleischman, a psychologist at the University of Portsmouth, says that orgasm and intense sexual pleasure are such strong forms of positive reinforcement and reward that they can motivate and change our behaviour. Evolution, she says, has trained us into using orgasm and high sexual arousal as currencies.

People will modify their own behavior in pursuit of satisfying sexual experiences? Amazing! Who knew?

Free association is part of the bedrock of a truly free society, and it has been systematically undermined for the last 100 years (at least). Silencing The Opposition, from a Moron no less, discusses the issue. I don't agree completely, but it's worth a read.

I would also argue that all Americans of every group should be entitled under our laws regarding free association, to exclude from their company anyone they desire, and for any reason they desire it.

Black groups should be entitled to exclude whites and vice versa. Businesses should be allowed to do the same if they're willing to pay the price for it. If a black owned business wants to exclude whites and cater to just 11% of the population with their business, I believe that is their right. White groups and businesses should be allowed to do the same.

The only exception to this rule should be government, which should be required to provide the same service to all citizens regardless of what groups they belong to. But government should not be required to provide equal service to non-citizens. They didn't legally buy it; they shouldn't get to use it. If you want to go crazy and offer government service to legal residents, I'll probably quibble on which services, but I'm open to discussion on it.

53 I was home from school because of a cold. Mom turned on the Price is Right and instead it was the space shuttle launch. They were showing it because that school teacher was on the flight. We watching it go up and then it broke apart. My Mom, master of understatement, said " I don't think its suppose to do that". We kept watching. The thing I remember the most was the guy doing the flight countdown and narration afterwards. He was steady. When the Challenger blew he said "there has been an obvious malfunction" or something along those lines. He was very calm. The look on the kids faces at the school where that teacher taught was heart breaking. First confusion, then WTF, then crying. They should have thrown out those news cameras immediately. Fucking ghouls.

63 The primary issue with both slavery and Jim Crow was what the government was doing to groups it did not like.

We implemented a solution on society that banned not only government discrimination, but also private discrimination.

One of the core problems here though is that we really didn't end government discrimination, or more specifically political leaders generations ago left the door open for what we see today - where the government discriminates against Caucasians, men, heterosexuals, and Christians.

Of late the government-media-business complex has started using the private sector in a coordinate effort to discriminate against those groups as well.

Should people have a complete right to freedom of association? Of course. Remember, that was never really the issue...

But any serious movement in this direction would be incredibly painful politically. It is far wiser to approach this from the opposite direction. The Trump administration should start going after women's only clubs, black colleges, etc, for discrimination.

Make the government-media-business complex live by its own rules...

Casualties in the space program, in contrast to maritime disasters at sea...

In the space program, loosing crew was a huge public relations disaster, and everyone opposed to the huge waste of money spent for nothing while poor oppressed people of color were starving left government decision makers adrift with no good answer. Especially when those government decision makers had no idea what to do with the space program.

In contrast, everyone understood why they needed maritime commerce, and any loss of life was of less significance than the loss of commerce. Sure, there were scapegoats, but people still went to sea in ships for the money.

Those bastards had an open casket funeral for him.

100 Spent the day at the Pres McKinley Memorial and Museum. Wreath laying ceremony, as it is the anniversary of his birthday (learned this is done each year for each past President). As he was a Civil War veteran, there was a re-enactor Firing party and a Civil War field gun.

Ceremony was intimate feeling. Mrs IMG, grandson the elder, and I stood about 12 feet from where the wreaths were laid. I did have to retrieve him from mingling with the dignitaries immediately prior to the ceremony. BG Strand represented President Trump. Took grandson to meet the gun crew afterwards. He now knows what a caisson is.

I love The Player. One of my first purchases on Amazon streaming video, many years ago. There are so many inside jokes in that movie, from Buck Henry pitching the sequel to The Graduate to all of the comments about tracking shots in the opening (which, I'm guessing, is actually the longest tracking shot in movie history), to a hundred others which I will not mention because *spoiler alert*.

For cameo appearances, you have Dick Mellen's party (look for Jack Lemmon playing the piano), then the breakfast scene at the restaurant (Charles Champlin with Burt Reynolds), and finally the closing scene of 'Habeas Corpus', where literally everybody shows up.

If I stopped watching every movie with a leftist douchnozzle in it, I would have nothing left to watch but Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson. Which, if entertaining, would get a bit boring after a while.

P.S. Tim Robbins in The Hudsucker Proxy is also well worth watching. Not specifically his performance, but the movie in general. The Coen Brothers greatest achievement.

The one I'm thinking about, the narrative goes : The General in charge wanted to show the techs working on a fuel leak how safe it was and ordered a chair brought out to the launch pad so he could sit at the base of the rocket and smoke his pipe while the crew worked to stop the fuel leak.

There was another explosion that destroyed the command bunker and killed all the chief scientists and technicians. That, it was said, was why the US was first to the moon. It took the Russians an entire generation to recover.

They *finally* have an actual spicy garlic shrimp appetizer that is absolutely delicious. I hope it's not just another limited-time menu add. And the chocolate baci cake... for a few minutes, I didn't need a girlfriend anymore. ;-)

That would be Soyuz 1, in April 1967. The Apollo 1 fire was in January. It was the height of the moon race, and both countries had "go fever". They were launching spacecraft that were not ready for prime time, despite warnings and pleas from astronauts and cosmonauts.

The Apollo 1 fire happened during a ground test. The Soyuz 1 flight was the first time a person was killed during a spaceflight. It was preceded by two unmanned test flights that can best be described as "disastrous".

241 Baby Sister Update:

[From her friend Roni, who lives nearby and visits often]

===

Hello to Joyce's friends and family,

I had a visit with Joyce this afternoon, and she also received a visit from friends, Lizzie and Gabby.  Joyce's personality really sparks when she has visitors and phone calls.  I find it best to visit for short periods and not to question Joyce too much, as it is difficult for her to communicate, though her understanding is good.   Best to ask yes/no questions and just "be there" for her.  Jorge is doing an amazing job caring for Joyce, Elle and all of the household tasks.  Nothing seems too much for him, and he provides "service with a smile!"  Joyce is getting around in a wheelchair for now, and is expecting to visit her horse and do some shopping with her husband and daughter over the weekend. Her Minnesota friends, Lynn and Lisa will be visiting with Joyce the weekend of Feb. 3.

===

As always, prayers most welcome.

And I'm sorry I bailed early last night and missed the opportunity to thank my Horde friends for their prayers and good thoughts. Please know that I can never say Thank You enough.

252 120 They always talked about o-rings being the culprit in the shuttle disaster. Does anyone have any idea how big the o-ring was? When I was in Tucson I saw a section of booster and the gaskets between the exterior joints were gigantic. Got me thinking it might not be something I usually equate to an o-ring.
Posted by: Jinx the Cat at January 28, 2017 10:34 PM (1F6Sr)

I was taking a physics class in college when the accident happened, and the professor had retired from NASA. He was pissed at the whole shuttle program because he felt it did nothing to explore the solar system, and that the boosters were unsafe. The liquid fuel booster was just fine, but the solid fuel ones were an accident waiting to happen.

His reasoning was that if there was a problem with the liquid fuel booster, it could be shut off, released and the shuttle could return safely. The solid boosters? Once they were lit, they were lit and couldn't be controlled.

He was a proponent of the Big Dumb Booster.

259 Two spaces is for typewriters because the characters all take up the same amount of space. All computer typing is proportional and only take up the amount of space they need just like (old-fashioned) typesetting in a book unless it's a special font made to take up the same space. You don't see the extra space in books because it's not needed to differentiate the way you used to have do with a typewriter. BTW, single numbers take up the same space so they'll align when they're typed in columns so a '1' and an '8' will take an equal amount of space. (The standard used to be having the numerals equal to the font's n-space.) Sorry, don't feel like Binging the real word for the opposite of "proportional type".

266 The reason you put 2 spaces after a period is to make sure everyone reading knows that's the end of a sentence, not a comma, which is easy to mistake in small print and a lot of fonts. The Oxford comma is completely unnecessary keystroke, and should thusly die a much-deserved death. In every case where it is employed for (putative) disambiguation, a simple re-ordering of the items in the sequence would achieve the same result.

The emdash, on the other hand, is merely a very sensible (and simplified) rendering of the double dash, and should definitely have its own dedicated keystroke. For efficiency's sake.

If you put up a post *right here* in this
comment section, and you've typed two spaces after each period? The web
software will shorten each incident to *one* space.

Here, watch. I'll type the following with two spaces in between, but only one space will survive:

Red. Blue.

I do a lot of composing in WordPad for cutting and pasting to a variety of databases and programs, and I do that because posting from one system to another means I get to carry bits of formatting around too.
I learned to put two spaces after a period, and it does help visually if the auto-formatting doesn't dick with what I do.

I hate helpful formatting and helpful programs. I want to have the final say in what I write and how I write it.

Yeah, there were rumors, and I think that's all they were. I remember reading an article about an Italian ham radio operator who claimed to have heard transmissions from cosmonauts stranded in orbit, but they were determined to be hoaxes.

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the records of the Russian space program have been made public, and while there were a number of close calls, there don't seem to be any fatalities that were covered up.

There was one cosmonaut who burned to death in an oxygen chamber during training. It's too bad that wasn't publicized at the time, as it would have served as a warning to NASA and might have prevented the Apollo 1 fire.

No. Justified type means that the type on the right hand margin runs straight up and down, just like the left margin. The spacing between the letters and words is adjusted to achieve this effect.

The opposite of 'proportional font' is 'fixed pitch', which means that each letter occupies the same horizontal space. The way typewriters work ( I would say 'used to work', but I still have a couple of typewriters and that's the way they still do work).

404 Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the records of the Russian space program have been made public, and while there were a number of close calls, there don't seem to be any fatalities that were covered up.

There was one cosmonaut who burned to death in an oxygen chamber during training. It's too bad that wasn't publicized at the time, as it would have served as a warning to NASA and might have prevented the Apollo 1 fire.

Crazy bastard did it at something like half an atmosphere pressure inside his suit. A third world tyranny with nukes and a space program - that's all the USSR ever was.

412 Is monospace the word you seek, Canuckosabe?
--------
Yeah, although my beer-drenched memory was thinking 'monotype' as word for it too.

And 'justification' regarding your dad's typesetting experience is how much space you put between words when you want the type to be flush-even on both sides of the column or page contrasted with flush left or flush right (aligning with only the left or right side of the page or column). With the flushes, you can use a fixed space between words; with justified columns/pages the amount of space between words on one line of type will vary because the proportional spacing means that if there are alot more wide letters (like 'W') in one line contrasted with narrower letters (like 'i') in the next, then the spaces between words will have to be different. (Sorry that's not a great explanation but I'm in a hurry.)

When we did an assignment for my typesetting training class for the one week of using old, cold metal type from a California Job Case, I only got 18 out of 20 on the handset justified text sample because I screwed up the spacing between letters and had used two hyphenated word-breaks. Apparently it was possible to do the same piece (20 lines I'd imagine) without resorting to hyphenating any of the words. And, of course, when putting space between words you don't want too little space or it's difficult to differentiate between words; or too much space that leaves too much (evil!) white space between words.

413 I'd read that in the early days of the space programme, a plan to detonate a nucular bomb on the Moon was floated about... IIRC, there was some concern about unforeseen consequences of such a spectacle, which would be visible from the Earth -- I don't recall if it was offending the ROPs or pissing off mostly peaceful and undocumented space alien moon-squatters, whatever...

489 Bertram @ 454 - The Moon is a Harsh Mistress?

Posted by: Butch at January 28, 2017 11:55 PM (hXu8T)

490 None of the Astronauts, Soviet or American, have died in vain.

With every mishap, every loss, every death, vital and important lessons were learned. Engineering improved.

And humility multiplied.

Confidence, bordering on cockiness is a necessary element of everyone involved in space flight. Those nameless hundreds who layout, splice, solder, seal and bundle the thousands of miles wiring. Who form, weld, rivet and finish acres of metals. That plumb the arteries and veins of life giving oxygen and water systems.

They're countless in their anonymity, but even the least of them has to be possessed of an absolute confidence, that what they're doing is the best that it can be done, not just their best, but the best that any human on the planet can do right then, and right there.

Yet, when the inevitable has sadly, happened, each and every one of those Engineers and Technicians has to do the hard thing, the gut-check, wondering if theirs was the fatal error, the critical mistake or failure to check that one, small, vital detail, that for a crew of likewise Supremely Confident Astronauts, was the hinge between this life, and the next.

NASA is but one element in a huge chain of what goes into each and every spaceflight.

It really comes down to prime contractors and subcontractors.

And finally, somewhere along the line, it always comes down to people. And sometimes, a person.

Who then have to live the rest of their days with that certain, dreadful knowledge that whatever they did that day, either in the factory, the clean room or the control room, sealed the fate of their launch, their capsule and so, the lives which were then in their hands.

I can think of few more sobering, dreadful and weighty responsibilities, than to be "sign-off" on a bit of work, a design, or even the orbital mathematics upon which ride even one life, much less a half-dozen or more.

The Right Stuff, is much more than an accurate descriptor of these people. It's also a massive, respectful understatement, withal.

"Where do we get such men?", Patton asked.

Same place as always. They're your neighbors, your friends, your classmates, sons and daughters, husbands and wives.

I think it's the same too, for the Russians. And it will be the same, when the Chinese suffer their losses, along with India and every other emergent spacefaring nation.

Pioneers gotta pioneer. Adventurers gotta adventure. And courageous men and women have to step out on the red carpet of fear, courageously.

Just as the law of the sea dictates that all mariners lay to and render aid to sailors of all flags, so must we all honor all who escape gravity in their thin, tiny and astonishingly fragile craft.

Truly, it is the only way to honor those that've gone before, and who've given their last true measure of devotion, in the doing.

And too, it includes their untold thousands who study, design, engineer and build their unique rockets and capsules and stations.

They're all pretty much at the Apex of what their nations can breed, educate, train and produce.

And rivals or not, it's an honor to have such worthy competition. We need it, in fact.

Champions require the Challenger.

May be we yet be worthy of her flight.

http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/___cat/html/mission_page/MR_Mariner_4_page1.html

Compare those photos with the New Horizons flyby of Pluto in 2015. Absolutely staggering.

https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/newhorizons/images/index.html

In 1965, Pluto was just a little speck in telescopes. Practically nothing was known about it, and a flyby mission was out of the question with the technology at the time.

I expect the Mars rovers are gathering data on the radiation environment on the surface of that planet. It might be that future mars colonists might have to live underground, and only venture out on the surface to do stuff.

If you could bulk up Mars' atmosphere, that would block much of the radiation. There have been suggestions to bombard Mars with comets, or icy debris filched from the rings of Saturn.

In 2024, the Dems would have held the White House for 24 of the previous 32 years, and you can kiss the 2nd Amendment being an individual right goodbye.

Plus, this ruling only affected those who had visas and were already en route to the US or had landed in the US. Those who have yet to depart their country of origin are still barred from entering.

533 I have read about using a composing stick and locking the frame down.
Dad used a linotype system and only hand set type for a class if I remember correctly
------------
I had forgotten the composing stick! Yeah, I remember using that.

And when a huge page or pages of single-character lead type was dropped or otherwise knocked out of place, it was called 'pieing' a job because all of the characters had ended up being thrown all over the place (like the 'pied' in 'pied piper' clothing)!

I impressed the interviewers at my interview at Canada's largest magazine publisher by mentioning the cold-type work we had done to familiarize ourselves physically with what leading, kerning etc. really meant as an intro to the course mentioning that I hadn't pied my job. One of the guys said once back in the old days he recalled all the hullabaloo when someone pied several pages of some big job.

Most of our phototypesetting course was using a machine run by a punchcard-style tape; that would print the results on special paper; and then be dipped in a type of wax to be cut up and pasted down onto a card board (paste-up); then it would be photographed onto a the metal printing plate.

I can't recall if we did anything about hot-metal processes. Probably not as it was a phototypesetting course that was about replacing hot-metal.

That's it for me tonight. See you late tomorrow.

Objections have been raised that even with terraforming Mars, an artificially-created atmosphere will only last a few million years before it is stripped away by solar radiation.

552 549 From what I've seen, we were so close in the late '60's to making real breakthroughs in space flight. Hell, we were working on nuclear propulsion because the Saturn V - never yet topped for payload and power - wasn't powerful enough for what we had in mind. Today? We hitch a ride with the Russians.

The payload was TDRS 2 that gave us eyes in the sky. Russia wouldn't dare shoot down the shuttle with every child in the world excited about the first teacher in space. We were all on pins and needles leading up to the launch. When it exploded, we all assumed that it had indeed been shot down. Thankfully, that was not the case. It was a full year later before TDRS 2 was deployed.

She earned the right to be most remembered astronaut for that flight. She was a civilian and a much bigger hero than is widely known. She knew the risks and was an incredibly brave lady.

560 We need John Oliver to get on TV and say that Trump cannot put a base on the moon. "I will laugh at your pathetic failure, because you are a joke and you should know your place."

Mars used to have a magnetic field, and when it lost it, it lost it's atmosphere. Then the water froze or sublimated.
So get the magnetic field up again, and that's the first step to terraforming.

Impossible to know before hand. It's all about ego, and egos get pretty big at that level. It's all about willingness, or will, to escalate to the next level. And it takes a few million people supporting the decision.

Look back to the seventies and the wars of "national liberation" all over the African continent. Cuban troops, and Russian Marxist-Leninists, and local leaders who want to take back their country from the White European Colonials. You can back yourself into a corner where you have to admit loss of face, or pull the trigger.

Apollo was a victorious battle in the Cold War, but it short-circuited a more organic and evolutionary development of space. That's what we need now.

"Exploration" has mostly been done by robotic craft. Now we need things like "development", "exploitation of resources", and "settlement".

It was one of the worst moments of my life. It changed the lives of both my husband and I. If you'll remember, everything was put on hold for a year. Even after the Memorial, the JSC was eerily quiet. I can't begin to express how depressing it was. After seven months of it, we accepted civvie jobs in another city.

We went back for the first time last summer. Nothing was as it once was. All of the contractor buildings had been replaced with neighborhoods. Even the streets had changed. The parking lots within NASA itself were near deserted. It was still just as sad to us 30 years later.

And it's only a stay on those w/ green cards, who are already being vetted anyway and 2 have been released. The media is playing BS w/ this.

Wiki entry says this:

Note: while a TDRSS satellite is in the manufacturing process it is
given a letter designation, but once it has successfully achieved the
correct geosynchronous orbit it is referred to with a number (for
example, TDRS-A during development and before on-orbit acceptance, and
TDRS-1 after acceptance on orbit and put into operational use). Thus,
satellites that are lost in launch failures or have massive malfunctions
are never numbered.

The entire time I worked there we referred to the various birds by letter designator, never by number. This was true locally or when talking to GSFC. So it's possible that using the numbers is part of the official documentation somewhere, but nobody does it in practice. 'Cause government program.

614 Completely agree. I've never had a decent corned beef and cabbage at an Irish Pub in the US. Easy to do at home and quick if done in a pressure cooker.

Posted by: Morticia the Morbidly Malcontent at January 29, 2017 12:53 AM (CHhLL)

Instead of going to an "Irish" pub for corned beef and cabbage, why not ask around at a few regular establishments that you know have good kitchens, and ask if any plan to celebrate St. Paddy's day with corned beef and cabbage? If they are already known for good food, chances are they won't fuck it up.

Since the Mrs hates the smell of cooked cabbage, if I want it, we are going out for it.

Which now sucks since the Irish pub in town closed down last weekend.

618 608 Wiki entry says this:

I read that wiki entry and thought they were wrong as I never heard them referred to in that manner. The only bird in the sky when I was there was TDRS 1 which you guys called A. Interesting. Thanks for the lesson. I mainly worked in Bldg 30 and can still see that hour and a half of dark on the board that 2 was going to fix. We were so excited that we would soon not have the dark time.

You could use an induction plate outside. Honestly, with the latest generation of pressure cookers like the Kuhn Rikons, they don't release steam. There is no smell.

bold, and strikethrough done the same way, except substitute "b" and "s" for the "i"

Note that the displayed tags show up because I placed spaces between the square brackets and the contained command, so that Pixy does not see them as tags. An actual italic tag is typed "square brace, i, square brace", in sequence, with no spaces.

Fuck up your close tags, and thereby format the next person's post, you get a turn in the Barrel. Many regulars include a string of close tags in their nic, to avoid that sad end.

That is too bad. I thought the first was pretty decent, although given over a bit to idealizing the skills of the protagonist (yet for some reason I had no problem with John Wick- must be the presentation.)

You all had better high school music to listen to. I remember listening to Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots. Of course, I never threw out the music my parents listened to, but for a couple rock ribbed conservatives, they listened to a lot of folksey type bands: Mamas and the Papas, Kingston Trio, Simon and Garfunkel, etc. Even then, I found it cloying at times.
