Politico Poll: 49% of Americans Found Trump's Inaugural Address "Good" or "Excellent;" 51% Say It Was "Optimistic;" 46% "Presidential;" 44% "Inspiring"

And I don't get this -- 65%, a pretty nice majority, had a "positive reaction" to the speech.

I say I don't understand that because if 65% had a positive reaction, why do only 49% find it "excellent" or "good"?

Ah: Here's the answer. 65% reacted positively to the "America First" message, irrespective of how they felt about the speech as a whole.

At any rate -- so much for the genius sheep of the media in their huge, luxurious bubble.

7 I figured that speech was generally popular with people that watched it. No matter how hard the media tried, they couldn't explain what was so divisive about it, other than it being anathema to far-lefties.

It wasn't PC enough and that was pretty much all that was 'wrong' with it.

33 Trump was plainspoken and said what he said on the campaign trail. The media didn't like it because: (1) the media (and the left) likes rhetorical flights of fancy that don't mean anything but sound intelligent to a pseudo-intellectual, and (2) Trump was saying the same things that he said during the campaign (which the media didn't like then, either).

The final polls weren't that far off, though.

They predicted that Hillary would win by about 2%, and she won the popular vote by about...2%.

A more interesting question to me is: When are the polling firms trying to be accurate?

It's the same pattern every cycle: The polling firms do what they want until the last poll when they try their damnest to be accurate.

I am still not sure. I think Hillary was such a catastrophically bad candidate that it is hard to say how it would have went on our side.

I will grant that now that he is in office, I doubt whether anyone would have been ballsey enough (forklift level ballsey) to do what he is doing in his first three days.

Well, for one thing, any poll that makes the left look bad or the press look dumb, yet is reported by the press, tends to seem more likely and trustworthy. But I agree: they're still stupid an wrong. Ace has been consistent on this though: he loves some polls and follows them as if they're valid, always has.

108 >>>Why are people (I mean the press, not ace, please no with the banning) acting as if the polls are suddenly totes accurate after the bloodbath of the elections?

It seems like every single time that actual events show that polling is wrong, there's a half of a nanosecond of reflection, by which I mean Nate Silver posts a see see how if you squint I was right piece, and then "polls say that 4,234% of respondents think polls are accurate."

Before BC and I start screaming at each, we discuss the speech and how it was very positive to anyone other than those whose ox was being gored. I get why they hated it.

...

the polls had a consistent 4-5% undercount of Trump support. A poll showing 49% approval probably indicates 53% approval.

The polls were wrong, but not randomly so -- they were wrong all in the same direction, and by about the same range of error.

They predicted that Hillary would win by about 2%, and she won the popular vote by about...2%.

A more interesting question to me is: When are the polling firms trying to be accurate?

It's the same pattern every cycle: The polling firms do what they
want until the last poll when they try their damnest to be accurate.
.
.
.I don't think it is a question of the National Polls being accurate, they were pretty much all within the MOE, it was the State polling that sucked and the suckage continued up to the day before the election.

Going into election day the latest polls showed Trump winning Ohio by 3 points and he won by 8, Pennsylvania with hillary up by 2 and Trump won, Trump barely ahead of hillary in Iowa but he took the State by 9+. hillary up by 8 in Wisconsin where Trump squeaked a win. These polls were almost all outside the margin of error. Something is/was wrong with State polling this cycle.

State polling was completely off the mark and widely inaccurate this cycle.

184 170 I don't think it is a question of the National Polls being accurate, they were pretty much all within the MOE, it was the State polling that sucked and the suckage continued up to the day before the election.

Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at January 25, 2017 04:05 PM (le7jz)

=======================

That's very true, so polling is broken in certain areas?

I don't know, but it seems like dismissing all of it whole cloth is a little premature.

Too many people bought into polling too uncritically. Just keeping the limitations of polling in mind whenever we look at a new set of numbers is probably the best way to go.

Here's the new president, not just reiterating every single bit of his in-your-face campaign agenda, but specifically saying that decades of what ..... the people with him on the dais on the west front of the Capitol have brought us, is terrible, and he's going to erase it. Amazing.

Every public utterance encourages me that Trump is not just not backing down, but perhaps leaning even more forward, on the key issues.

I'm not even necessarily a complete fan of every bit of his policy shifts - but overall it's spectacularly correct on the big issues.

Problem is, he's making me hungry. For every unthinkable statement he makes, or EO he signs, for every simply politically impossible and "controversial!" move he signals ..... I find myself wanting MORE.

260 I read an article about Trump buying his compound in Florida.

No one there wanted him around.

He offered $25 million and the owners wanted more. He ended up paying them $8 million and got some property for a golf course too I think.

Non-stop issues with Trump. He keeps winning.

One person says paraphrasing He keeps winning and now his place is going to the winter fucking White House.

They sued him over the height of his flag pole and the size of the flag.

He had a problem with airplanes flying over the place and sued the airport.

Now that he's president he can have any size flag he wants on the biggest flagpole he can find.

Air traffic is no longer able to fly over his estate because he's president.

The whole thing is hilarious and win after win for Trump.

I think it was in Vanity Fair or the Atlantic. It's about him acquiring Mar-A-Largo.

No; It doesn't sound like fun at all.

339 Willowed...

I'm glad that Mary Tyler Moore was able to see Donald Trump become President before she passed away.

340 Hm, hopefully they replay it. PBS aired a special last night called "Trump's Road to the White House," have it taped and plan to watch tonight. I expect cluelessness but we'll see.

Watched last night. Overall, pretty good, but at one point it leaned a little too much towards "All Trump voters are racist" meme.

341 Rachel Maddow fixated on two words from the speech. American carnage. American.Carnage. American...carnage. You see how dark and crazy Trump is? Huh? Do ya? AMERICAN CARNAGE!!!! That's the theme of this presidency!

If I recall correctly, Trump was referring to the murder rate in Chicago, but of course that context was not provided.

342 Umm it had a lot of the hitler in it.

343 The media thought it was dark because Trump said that his guiding principle would be "America First". What was remarkable was that, after 8 years of Obama, our president had to speak something aloud that had been implied/assumed to be the guiding principle of every leader for the 230 years of the country's history that preceded Obama.

344 Regarding polls, I just spot the "right" side about 5 points and I'm usually pretty close.

It's a combination of MSM modeling that for some reason always thinks Democrats greatly outnumber Republicans and conservatives don't like to participate in polling like liberals do.

But I can't dismiss polling altogether, I think RealClear Politics called like 46 out of 50 states correct , with 4 states in that 1% range. And they just averaged all the polls together.

345 Further to my last - 343

What is really "dark" is that the vast majority of the media and about half of our countrymen thought it was "dark" for a man elected to lead our country to state that he intended to act in our best interests. That is evidence of some "dark" masochism right there.

348 Obviously the Democrats need more vagina hats in order to appeal to the working class. That'll bring Trump's poll numbers down.
