Neil Gorsuch Emerges as Trump's Front-Runner for Supreme Court Nominee

Here's a brief on him.

He's on the 10th Circuit of Appeals right now, appointed by Bush, and thought to be among the most "Scalia-esque" of all possible Scalia replacements.

Age: 50. And as I like to say, 50 is the new twenty-nine-and-three-quarters.

Judge Napolitano said on McCallum's show that if Gorsuch is in fact Trump's nominee, Trump would have done exactly what he said he would do: Nominate a younger version of Scalia.

22 pathetic endgame for the Pompeo confirmation - from
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/senate-confirms-pompeo-as-cia-director/article/2612755

"No CIA director in history has ever been confirmed on Inauguration Day," Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and two other Democrats said in a Friday. "The importance of the position of CIA director, especially in these dangerous times, demands that the nomination be thoroughly vetted, questioned and debated."

Despite that demand, Democrats used little of the six hours of debate set Monday for Pompeo's nomination. Instead, Obamacare was discussed on the Senate floor, and senators in the end agreed to end debate early and start the vote at around 7 p.m."

So that's how "important" all the extra hearing time was worth.

Considering what the electoral map looks like - that Democrats are almost slightly more influential as a party as The Rent Is Too Damn High - we have never been in a better chance to enact amendments that reasserts states' supremacy over the Federal government. 64 Trump is talking about cutting regulations by 75% and quite possibly more.

Impressive.

He's saying something I think most of us have talked about for years and that is getting it back to the core essentials. Yes we want clean air and clean water, and we got those things. Then we got everything else and now you can't do anything without hiring people to just deal with the regulations.

I know Jane's husband is a small business owner. I'm self-employed but it's just me grinding away on the computer. And my taxes are awful because of the self-employment tax.

I can't imagine how someone with actual employees makes it. I really can't. Once I started working for myself I quickly acquired massive respect for small business owners.

Just for myself and my meager earnings I wish Trump could help with the self-employment tax because it's awful.

Reagan also gave us O'Connor, though that is not the fault of Meese (or Levin). Sometimes, nominees lies about what they are and feel. But sometimes you get gems like Alito, Scalia and Thomas.

Bottom line is the vetting has to be incredibly thorough. We have a shot at affecting the judiciary for perhaps 50 years. It would seriously thwart the Left and make what they want to do harder.

I brought up Gorsuch earlier today because I looked into Trump's activities with SCOTUS over the weekend.

He seems solid. The conservative legal groups making the right noises although I'm suspicious of them because it's probably the same groups who made the right noises over Souter and really Roberts. Roberts, we were assured, was solid. Look how that turned out.

But Trump absolutely, must have litmus tests. He must receive answers directly from the potential nominee on these tests. We simply cannot waste this opportunity we've been given on another Souter or Roberts.

Could it still turn out poorly? Maybe, but I think it's less likely than when I read about H.W. Bush saying he didn't know what Souter's opinions were on abortion or all the other hot topic issues near and dear to most of our hearts.

94 We will get a good idea as to how conservative a candidate he is by listening to the lamentations of the Dems.

The more teeth gnashing and hair pulling and caterwauling that happens, the better the candidate is. If a couple of the Senators commit seppuku, then he's solid gold.

95 Between Trump appointing potential up to four or, dare I say, five justices and more than half of the federal judiciary, well, just think about the implications.

We are within real reach of being able to effectively lock the lefties out of the judicial system for two generations. I don't think that's an exaggeration at all, if it's done right and it's done smart.

Even if they take power after Trump leaves, we have essentially removed an entire branch of the government from their control. For up to 40 years (with younger justices appointed of course).

As opposed to the recent Dems, who have a perfect record of appointed lefty hacks. Clinton gave us Breyer and The Notorious RBG, Obama gave us Kagan and Sotomayor.

I grew up in NJ, and we had a Ukrainian festival in Holmdel. My mom painted beautiful ceramics (she won several best of amateur in state awards in ceramics competitions), and did embroidery.

Eastern Ukraine tends to be a bit more pro-communist, because when the USSR started starving Ukrainians en masse, they then trucked in a bunch of their own to populate the towns. Lviv is west, so I would be surprised if they were more communist; my family's farm is in western Ukraine, not too far away from Lviv, and my father was in his late teens and fought against the Soviets and Nazis. It was like being in a pincer he said.

Anyway, when I was a kid, people fought based on their microheritage - Hutsul, Lemko, etc. Depending on who was in charge of the various locals orgs, one was more in vogue than the other, or more 'valid'. It pissed off my dad because we were a land subjugated under the Soviet thumb, but we were pissing on each other over petty things. My father's family in Ukraine had been very wealthy before collectivization and well respected, so even though we were poor-ish, the community paid him a lot of deference; he was also very charismatic, had a way about him. When he died I was 12, and since my mom also didn't speak Ukrainian, (her parents didn't teach her), we were now low on the totem poll. It was petty shit. They curried favour with Tato because of his family and what he did, but he died, and they treated his widow and two kids like second hand furniture. It was like they scrabbled for any vestige of notoriety in the US community and people who weren't useful for that were well, useless.

Anyway, WAY OT, sorry! LOL

Well I'm not saying he's okie-dokie. I'm saying the Scotusblog calls him Scalia-like, and Napolitano said the same. (Though he might just be regurgitating the scotusblog assessment.)

I have no idea, personally. I never heard of him until I read this two days ago. (Finally decided to post this particular tab.)

As for his clerking for Kennedy: I don't think that that would really indicate much. A clerk can brief the judge and write his own draft opinion, but the judge gets to ignore that and write his own, obviously. And you know Kennedy was very invested in his "Sweet Mystery of Life" doctrine of constitutional interpretation.

Depends on phrasing. One does not have to currently be a Catholic priest to become pope. One must be capable of becoming one, though (i.e. an unmarried male, either Catholic or willing to convert.)
Posted by: mikeski at January 23, 2017 09:06 PM (iKu60)

--In theory, a married man who becomes widowed could be ordained a bishop afterward. The Latin Church could also in theory allow married men to be ordained priests, but I doubt it would happen with bishops; even the Orthodox and Eastern Rite Catholics who have married parish priests do not have married bishops.

Of course, St. Peter himself was married, but although it's never definitively explained, I think the official story is that he was widowed before taking his chair in Rome.

Another requirement for priests that is not as central as it was hundreds of years ago (although with all the transmania going around it may be yet again) is that they cannot be castrated males.

I would think you could, at least, gradually reintroduce carbs to your diet, without blowing up again. But I guess it's easier said than done.

...

supposedly when you reach your goal weight, you go into "maintenance," where you add back carbs in increments of 5/grams more per day, for a week, and check at the end of the week to see if you've gained weight. You keep adding until you gain weight, and at that point, you go back to your last level of carbs that did not cause you to gain weight. Then this higher level of carbs is what you're permitted in "maitanance" mode.

I've never gotten to goal weight so I have no idea if this works.

524 logprof, I'm a purist... I prefer having the individual albums. :-)

Steely Dan did the same thing with their box "Citizen Steely Dan" years ago. It was just all of their albums crammed onto a smaller number of CDs, than if you had just bought the originals. Kind of a waste if you ask me. A box should contain rarities, B-sides, new songs, alternate takes, the works.

Plus, I think that box may be out of print already and thus *more* expensive. Also, the albums I purchased were more recently remastered.

584 qdpsteve, from your link:

"This is it: Everything the Police released," boasts the notes in the 66-page booklet included with this box set. Obsessive fans have already written to rock magazines indignantly pointing out the omission of this or that obscurity. But everyone else will find that these four discs include all the Police they'd ever want to own. The first two discs include all of Outlandos d'Amour, Reggatta de Blanc, and Zenyatta Mondatta in their original order, interspersed with live rarities and singles B-sides. Discs 3 and 4 are more satisfying, including the band's well-crafted studio high points, Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity, plus more outtakes and live tunes. The set ends with "Don't Stand So Close to Me '86," a dismal remake of the early favorite. By this point, the musician's egos were running rampant and they were barely speaking. If anyone wonders why the group called it quits so abruptly, this tune makes it clear that the split was smart and timely. --Jim DeRogatis

--Yeah that sounds about right. A 66 page book! That's a lot of liner notes, all right!

And yes, DSSCTM '86 did suck and no one would have missed its absence in the collection.
