Rule Britannia!

"The sun never sets on the British Empire". 100 years ago this was the literal truth, as our older sibling proudly administered a commonwealth that literally spanned the entire globe. Sorely tested by WWII, she stood strong against the National Socialist threat. Winston Churchill stood tall in the rubble of London, bravely flipping off the German planes with his trademark "V", becoming a eternal symbol of triumph over adversity.

V for victory.jpg

Has there ever been a better example of courage? Of defiance? Of stouthearted determination to fight through the toughest of times and emerge victorious? Such an example can inspire a people for generations, echoing down through the ages, ensuring greatness.

Then again, maybe not.

Two reasons the good guys won WWII were Churchill and the P-51 Mustang and both were hybrids. Churchill was English with an American mother and the P-51 was an American airframe with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

42 England is not the older sibling, but the Mother Country.

Semantics. The Founding Fathers thought of themselves as Englishmen equal to the British, and the Revolution as a split, hence siblings. "Mother Country" is equally valid from a different point of view. Potato, potahto. For the current world, I like Daniel Hannon's concept of the Anglosphere, and "siblings" works better in that context.

48 Great Britain.

Now an oxymoron. They never recovered from the First World War which should have been avoided in the first place but the Brits would never let any one replace themselves as the leader of Europe. See Napoleon.

And they were very good at bringing us in on their side for obvious reasons. Alone they would have lost but they always managed to entangle others in their conflicts.

All the ills which plagued us these last 100 plus years, i.e. Communism, Socialism, Fascism, Nazism and now Jihadism all flowed out of that useless conflict.

Winston was a natural leader but his type is now extinct in England.

64 I have shared this story before, but it's still troubling me. My Sister is coming from England for a visit in February,, She has been out of the country except for visas since 1972, She really is British. at this point She loathes Trump, I said "Well, let's not talk about politics then", but I feel annoyed because all she knows about him is what the liberal British media reports and "grabbing p****y" is one of them. She considers him a braggart and a blowhard (which he is) but knows nothing about the other side of Trump -that he loves America and that despite his infidelities he see4ms like a compassionate person who helps people in need. And she-being a person from Britain-does not like "ugly Americans" Should i even try to present another side of Trunp or not and if so, where can i get stories about the other side,

P.S.. I support Trump. I don;'t idolize him as some do. Not here, but that some almost religious feeling is apparent on other sides. He's not my Savior. he's not my God.

69 Churchill was extremely unpopular among post-WWII Americans, the families of returning veterans. Certainly some well-concealed propaganda from a couple of sources were in play, but the one thing I hear most often is that he simply assumed the Empire would resume business as usual, as if no world war had happened. He absolutely opposed any independence or self-rule for India, or most of the now-former possessions. You hear "imperialist" bandied about a great deal without meaning these days; once in a while it strikes you that there really was such a thing.

Part of that, I think, was because after the Nazis retreated from Greece, GB sent in troops to put down the Communist uprising there. Most of the FDR administration was appalled because Churchill did not give them the "right of self determination". Maybe because there were a good number of Communists in his State Department?

104 I have shared this story before, but it's still troubling me.

It really doesn't seem fair does it, that the anti-trump people can say what they want and we just have to tolerate it. But maybe it's best to try to stay clear of it, if that doesn't work than try to point out the reasoning behind Trump, which is to break up the dishonest government and media, and that sometimes God gives us what we need and not necessarily what we want. I'll say a prayer for you that you can just enjoy your time with your sister.

143 Fun fact: the British Churchill used the name "Winston S. Churchill" on his books to avoid being confused with an American novelist named Winston Churchill whose historical novels were huge bestsellers right around the turn of the 19th/20th centuries. The American Churchill was 3 years older than British Churchill and they met each other in Boston in 1900 -- when American Churchill was the more famous of the two. However, American Churchill is all but forgotten today.

147 Fen, the problem is that people believe like your sister does because they want to. They want reasons to hate him, so they manufacture them.

Unless your sister is open-minded, my guess is that nothing you say could move her.

There is an experiment I would like to try, but I have trouble maintaining a straight face whenever someone spews nonsense. The experiment is this: ask the person, as sincerely as possible, what their concerns are regarding Trump. Help them be as specific as possible. You want them to express their fears in such a way that it will be absolutely obvious whether they turn out to be well-grounded or not.

Example: when Obama was elected, I expressed my concern that his healthcare plan would restrict my choices and raise my premiums. It wasn't long before I could look at the changes in my insurance options and see I was right.

Perhaps your sister thinks women will be mistreated under Trump. Ask her what she thinks will happen. Will he reduce legal penalties for rape? Will he stop forcing everyone to subsidize abortions even when it violates their moral beliefs? Will he abuse his authority with young interns in the Oval Office? Will women's employment opportunities get worse or better? If he de-funds programs, how will that impact women's lives?

This gives your sister a chance to name her fears and perhaps one day she will see that they never came to pass. And she can acknowledge that privately without losing face in front of you.

Just a thought. If you try this, please let me know how it goes. I'd love to see if it's worth trying on some of my relatives.

Yes. As pointed out, it is Holst. The actual lyrics are from a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice. It is regarded, though not officially, as the national anthem by Brits.

Churchill had requested that it be used at his funeral. He loved his country beyond anything else.

Posted by: t-bird at January 22, 2017 08:34 PM (8zL5i)

185 153 In the picture Churchill is not giving the V for Victory salute. A V for Victory salute is given with the palm outward. The gesture in the picture is with the palm inward which is "up yours". Google 'rude hand signals of the world'.

Yes, he was a gentleman, but he was also forthright.

I'm aware of that (I specifically looked for a picture with the palm in, not out). What I don't know is if that gesture has a pithy name (like "the finger"), so I didn't know what else to call it.

Has she said what she would like to do while here? Do you have other relatives she will want to visit?

One thing I have learned from friends who have moved here from other countries, or from Americans who have lived overseas - if you think our press is one-sided, theirs is even worse. She will be coming here with preconceived ideas, and there's not much you can do about that.

But maybe some nice things will happen that will make her see things in a better light. For instance, President Trump (never gets old) will be meeting with Theresa May at the end of this week, and that will probably strengthen our relationship with Britain. That kind of thing.

Well, taking into account I don't know your sister, I think your best bet is just to be your sweet, encouraging self and not let her get you into any arguments regarding Trump, as best you can. Truly, it seems she has other things to worry about, but if she gets into a mood, just know that it's not you, it's whatever is worrying her.

My prayer for you will be that the visit will turn out to be much less stressful than you fear, and that you and your sister will enjoy each other's company and strengthen your relationship. (And, that she will see the light in many ways! Hey, miracles are God's specialty! .)

Being born when he was and of the family he was, he actually was introduced to Teddy Roosevelt (President of these United States) and Teddy knew who he was.

I remember reading about this in one of Roosevelt's biographies I read. Teddy didn't like Churchill, he thought he was egotistical and self-centered. Pretty rich coming from Teddy.

After that, I'd love to do some volunteer work for a new pro-life crisis pregnancy center nearby that is run by my dear friend from church. I fear, though, that I would be too emotional if someone were discussing terminating their pregnancy. [inhales]

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

‘Russian’ prankster organizes fake protest at UC Berkeley but hundreds march anyway

"Hundreds of people showed up to march on the UC Berkeley campus Saturday in what turned out to be a fake protest organized by a prankster who later identified himself (perhaps falsely) as a Russian national. But the march went on anyway.

A person named Sam Cox listed a march on the Action Network website that was to start at Memorial Glade near Doe Library at UC Berkeley at noon. He also cross-listed the march on the Women’s March Bay Area website, although the listing was later taken down. Berkeleyside got an email Thursday about the march and added it to the already-published story listing activities taking place Saturday in response to the inauguration.

But when hundreds of people showed up to Memorial Glade, there was no organized march. And those who had registered online later got an email in Russian stating:

“Я pranked многих американцев! хахаха / Не удивительно, что люди не имеют столь низкие результаты тестов. и один из вас получили это право, что я русский национальный xaxaxaxa / До свидания!”

Translated, that means: “I pranked many Americans! Hahaha. Not surprising that people [do] don’t have such low test scores and one of you got this right/privilege that I am Russian national. ha ha haha. Goodbye!”

And the name of the organizer of the march was changed on the website from Sam Cox to “Pepe the Frog,” a meme recently appropriated by the racist right. The Anti-Defamation League added the frog meme into its database of symbols in 2016.

“The event page now has a frog giving the finger because the ‘organizer’ assumed we would get there, find no one, and look it up to make sure we were in the correct spot, and get the finger,” Cori Kesler, one of the Berkeley marchers, told Berkeleyside.

Maris Meyerson was one of the hundreds who turned up at Memorial Glade to join the march. By around 11:45 a.m., when no organizer had turned up, she and others began to be suspicious, she said. Other marchers reported that when they clicked on “Memorial Grove,” the website said the location was closed. That led many people to wander around campus, frustrated by not knowing where to go, said Meyerson.

“A bunch of us were RSVPing for a march that was put together by Pepe the Frog,” said Meyerson. “They were trying to draw people away from Oakland to bring the numbers down…. It was clearly someone trying to make you reach a dead end.”"

One weird thing, though. I went back to re-watch the first season b/c I couldn't remember how it left off, and I found that lightening/brightening the tv display helped a lot. They film it in almost a shady patina, and when coupled with the serious nature of the story, I found it to be really dark. Much better after it was brightened.

The "archer" derivation is totally fabricated -- no evidence for it.

Originally, the sign was meant to held with the BACK of the hand toward the viewer (as in the Churchill photo) and the two fingers were the Sign Language symbol for "V", and the sign meant "V for Victory" (over the Germans).

20 years later, leftists co-opted the symbol but reversed the hand orientation (palm forward) and redefined the gesture to mean "Peace" -- pretty much the opposite of "kick Nazi ass."

That's what leftists do - co-opt symbols, then reverse their meanings, in an attempt to muddy every issue and render everything confusing and meaningless. Standard operating procedure.

436 An awareness of Russian meddling in US affairs is important to students. I would have no objection whatever to what the worthy gentleman from Marin suggests, provided it is thorough-going.

William Cowper Brann ('the Iconoclast') complained bitterly of it in the 1890's. Evidence of both the Czar's and the Bolsheviks' intelligence agencies building cells here is easy to get. There was a perfectly valid Red Scare in the early 1920's, a story or two in the 30's, curious silence until around 1948, and then certain parties wouldn't shut up about it until about Clinton's time.

Include all those sources, and what you have on Trump, and teach a course.

basically paraphrasing, I said look dude, the planet is 4 billion years old, you're not gonna tell it jack shit. While you're walking your ass off around the neighbor hood making zero money, not partying, not bending some little hard body over a desk, or a number of other things to have fun, you're wasting your life so wastes of skin like al gore can burn more electricity in his mansion in one month than you'll burn in 10 years. They pulled that shit on my generation with the nuke thing. The end is coming..the end is coming, march to end nukes, sign this, sign that, and you know what??? A bunch of retards wasted their life doing exactly what you're doing, and they were wrong, wrong enough that we're still here and the next generation of useful retards are walking around with clipboards wasting their life on another lie. 459 Three Notes on Churchill.

He had a picture of his Nanny on his desk his entire life. His mom was useful for her influence as an adult, but he was abandoned and ignored by both parents.

He was also observing a Cuban Revolution. This is where he made the comment about being shot at and missed. So 5 wars / combat before WWI.

He was instrumental in slowing down the German assault at Antwerp in 1914. That had a bearing on the Battle of the Marne in 1914. He escaped death from shellfire and wanted to be appointed a British Army General while The First Lord of the Admiralty.
That last request got him hammered in the Cabinet, probably why this episode is not as well known today.

478 The "archer" derivation is totally fabricated -- no evidence for it.

Posted by: zombie at January 22, 2017 09:32 PM

Yeah, the medieval "origin" is just a story. Dunno how it got started. I can't remember exactly when the "salute" gets going, but a hazy memory says late 19th century or early 20th. The "victory" thing is intriguing and must have some veracity, since Churchill used it as such... but, it has either become, or originally was, the "up yours"salute. Dunno. I seem to recall that it was "up yours", originally and morphed into "victory", then back again... but you may be right. It could well have started out as "victory" and became "up yours" just recently/

480 399 "is now STATE LAW"

No, it isn't even close to being state law yet. Just because a bill is introduced does not make it law. Remember "I'm Just A Bill?" from Schoolhouse Rock? Poor Bill had to jump through a lot of hoops -- committee hearings, floor votes, and being signed by the executive before he could become Law, right?

A legislator can introduce a bill to do any harebrained thing he or she wants -- declare that the sky is green, create a new holiday called Pussy Riot Day, institute free healthcare for pets, etc. -- but that does NOT mean the bill will ever see the light of day again. While anything is possible, particularly in California, the vast majority of bills introduced in any legislative body (state level or Congress) never become law. So don't be hitting the panic button just yet. If it is scheduled for a committee hearing, that would be the best time to speak up and put the kibosh on it if possible.

Many legislators introduce or sponsor bills they know have no chance of passage simply as a means of virtue signaling to their constituents and donors -- "I introduced legislation to do x".

American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017

This bill repeals the United Nations Participation Act of 1945 and other specified related laws.

The bill requires: (1) the President to terminate U.S. membership in the United Nations (U.N.), including any organ, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body; and (2) closure of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.

The bill prohibits: (1) the authorization of funds for the U.S. assessed or voluntary contribution to the U.N., (2) the authorization of funds for any U.S. contribution to any U.N. military or peacekeeping operation, (3) the expenditure of funds to support the participation of U.S. Armed Forces as part of any U.N. military or peacekeeping operation, (4) U.S. Armed Forces from serving under U.N. command, and (5) diplomatic immunity for U.N. officers or employees.

Introduced in the House just this month by Mike Rogers!

Trump: This is a tremendous bill. Tremendous. Let me tell you folks I've been in the real estate business in NYC for decades. Decades. And we've all known for a long time that the piece of property that the U.N. sits on is a gold mine. How about we turn it into a park for kids? We could put in another ice skating rink for the kids and their families. I know about ice skating rinks let me tell you. It's gonna be amazing!

501 Phillip K. Dick, near the end of his life at least, seemed to have been somewhat reasonably rational. He *knew* he had symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia and was apparently trying to keep taking his meds.

At one point in the early 1980s, he was teaching a creative writing class at a community college in Orange County, not very far from me. Wish I had known then what I know now about him, I would have wanted to be there.

It started out that a not-so-good person accidentally gets into Heaven and has to fool everyone or else it's eternal torment. But that all changed when she . . . . And now a real surprise ending in the season finale. Yeah, I know, it's got Beast-hugging Ted Danson in it and Kristen Bell has said some dumb stuff. Anyway, I think the writing is very interesting and I have no idea where it's going if it goes at all in a second season.

It seems that, by far, most people that know Trump personally like him. That says a lot to me.

Sounds and looks like Bob Kraft is losing his marbles.

Or he's drunk and knows but still knows he can't say f' you Goodell on live tv. The super bowl will be fun, I have grown up a Dolphins fan so have a deep hatred of the Patriots but am rooting for them to win this year - don't hate the GOAT just cuz he's beautiful.

522 Hollywood is very fond of Dick. Can't get enough.

-
But usually boinks him up the squeak hole. For example, the took a beautiful short story, We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, and turned it into two sucky Total Recall movies.

523 Bob Kraft drunk on his ass still has more class than Jerrah or that fucktard owner from Atlanta. The NFL still is shit. NASCAR is not a business model. Dumbfucks.

524 Conway kicked ass, but. Fake news now has a new meme..."alternative facts" --

i don't know why she didn't give him the short answer after she'd put out all that excellent info, Todd kept asking why spicer had done what he did: why didn't she ever say, Because You Lied, that's why!

532 Funny! I am trying to finish Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and am bogged down in the middle. Glad it isn't just my lack of culture that explains why I am confused and somewhat bored with the novel.

Yes, it is a very obtuse book. The movie to one small part of the idea in the book and spun out a very fascinating screen play, which is pretty much NOTHING like the book.

The book is really about the presence of human empathy, because this was apparently the way that the Andies could be told apart from humans. So it's a big discourse on human empathy, and all that. Really hard to wade through. You thought something interesting was going to happen?

I know somebody that worked pretty close to trump during the election. The way I heard it is he is a stickler, he accepts no excuses, no failure, you will be accountable for your performance, and he demands results, but said he was really great, really nice. That tells me he knows how to get people operating at their peak.

534 Churchill wrote about his Nanny in the passage that begins something like "my earliest childhood memories are of Ireland". Very amusing vignette, I'll try link it. Another amusing one was his meeting with Irish rebel leader Michael Collins.

538 #480 Not to white-knight for Fenelon too much because that comment bothered me too but I think she did go on to say/imply it was commenters at other sites and not here. No names mentioned but I've heard (former) anti-Trumpers (contrasted with true NeverTrumpers) whine about commenters at Conservative Grapevine for example 'worshiping' Trump or Obama-izing him. BS in my humble opinion but not here at the HQ itself.

541 There is not one single social or economic principle or concept in the philosophy of the Russian Bolshevik which has not been realized, carried into action, and enshrined in immutable laws a million years ago by the White Ant. ...

No one must, however, underrate the power and efficiency of a totalitarian state. Where the whole population of a great country, amiable, good-hearted, peace-loving people are gripped by the neck and by the hair by a Communist or a Nazi tyranny--for they are the same things spelt in different ways...

542 The most moving (political) cartoon I ever saw was in an old collection. The cartoon showed Britannia (the female symbol for England) standing on a rocky outcropping, with waves labeled "Hitler," "Germany," and so forth crashing over her. The defiant caption read "All right then, alone!" The cartoon was dated June 1940, right after the fall of France. I still get a bit teary thinking about it (must be my English genes).
