Open Thread for Politics

To keep the book thread on topic. Here is something below the fold for your morning schadenboners:

Trump cannot be president.jpg

"...what it truly means to be an American"? Seriously? When did they ever care about that?

I think it's absolutely *adorable* how progressives are now wrapping themselves in the flag. They're all patriotic and shit.

Update: Billionaire George Soros has ties to more than 50 ‘partners’ of the Women’s March on Washington. In the NY Times, no less.

9 Is that a real cover? What's wrong with these people? Not that they feel that way but that they are so clueless that they are everything they accuse their opponents of being. It's real insanity.

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at January 22, 2017 09:17 AM (IDPbH)

10 from a design perspective, never mind the content, that cover sucks.
why does it look like a drop down menu? because Trump uses Twitter? and what's with the what i presume is the upward trending financial line? part of the menu?

so it's dropdown menu that has a bunch of text instead of menu items?

looks like design by committee, or maybe the beginning of a different design before some editor decided to throw in a hit piece

https://tinyurl.com/jp6lp9e

You can pan around and zoom waaaay in. There are thumbnails at the bottom that will take you to various VIPs, but I like just looking around at the various facial expressions. Some of them are smiling, some are listening with rapt attention, some are talking to their neighbors, and some are shooting daggers out of their eyes.

The only thing that would make it better is if I could zoom in on one face and link that specifically. For example, right behind the Supreme Court justices is a black man in a plaid cap. I feel like I should recognize him, since he's up there on the platform, but I'm very bad with names and faces. Dig the look on the face of the woman to the left of him. Yikes!

HA! As if the NYT can tell people what is "conservative" or not.

Maybe a real headline would have been "Inaugural speech dims neo-con Rhino's hopes for the same ol, same ol."

NYT can't admit it, and maybe the GOP-e still can't either, but that speech and those ideas he laid out are EXACTLY what we voted for. None of the mamby pamby GWB stuff about "i want to make everyone happy no matter what".

These two candidates, the way they fight, the way they yell at each other, the way they make it personal, it's like having your parents get divorced, and you don't want to live with either of them. And the judge sits there and says, "Pick one or the other." And you say, "How about the jury? Can I-- can I go there?"

Posted by: Soothsayer 45 at January 20, 2017 01:38 PM (mZGNr)

I'm debating what to do with my facebook page. Now, even my marginally sane, politically moderate friends have lost their minds.

Since there are no pussy marches today, they are now caterwauling about how the Senate passed the Obamacare repeal with NOTHING to replace it, and when the House votes the same, then everyone will be left without insurance. Yes, your insurance that you have signed up for as a contract for the next year will fall apart immediately and you will die next week. You wont be able to see a doctor or be admitted to a hospital, on and on. If you have cancer, your insurance will be cancelled and you wont be able to get new insurance, that you will have to start paying for your own contraception, etc.

I cannot believe how stupid people are. Additionally, this DOES highlight the GOPe biggest fears that EVERYONE wants their free stuff and once you start a program, you can't delete it or you will be drummed out of office.

People shrieking about this are not just the twenty something protestors, I currently have retired military, and 50 year old plus well off individuals who are terrified.

A lot of this country has become so dependent on someone else for their life, and it is frightening.

One small criticism on my part. I don't understand why he spent so much time trying to explain any attendance numbers in comparison to Obama. The left is all about delegitimizing Trump (he didn't win the popular vote, he didn't have as many attendees at the inauguration, we had more protesters in the streets, etc.). I would have preferred Spicer said something along the lines of, "That is an interesting but ultimately irrelevant observation. 120 Inauguration turnout?

It was interesting to hear one of the talking heads on Friday pretty much say that you would have to travel fifty miles in any direction from Washington D.C. to find the closest county to have gone Republican on election night.

Pretty much any attendee had to travel a great distance in order to attend.

Which is why the Metro also did not get swamped either, yet the Mish March did.

Trump supporters = out of towners

Mish March = a huger percentage of DC/Baltimore locals.

137 Personally, I didn't care that it wasn't as well attended as Obama's. So what.

Trump didn't have 14 inaugural balls being played by current pop and rap artists. Just like Hillary's Beyoncé rallies, etc. people were coming to see celebrities, just as much or not more than to see the Obamas. There were 14 soirees for people to choose from when he was inaugurated. Trump , of all people, thought that was extreme and a waste of money and declined to support that many.

And as has been pointed out, 90% of DC is liberal Democrat. Very easy to spend time and money to see the home team play.

Not only that, but we have been hearing for the past two weeks about how these swarms of protestors and anarchists were coming to riot and be physically violent. People who actually have something to lose in life are going to make decisions to attend an inauguration with that information in mind. Especially if you were going to take kids to this.

162 In any big public event, there will always be trash left behind.

If everybody took care of their own trash, there wouldn't be any trash left. Sounds pretty simple and straightforward, but alas, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I used to go to Grateful Dead concerts, and despite many of the concert-goers being environmentally-friendly and all, there was an appalling amount of trash left behind.

Some people who really were concerned about the environment took matters into their own hands, and went around picking up other people's trash after the shows. I started carrying trash bags myself, and cleaned up the area around my car afterwards. It wasn't really a sacrifice, since it was just downtime that I would otherwise spend sitting in my car waiting for the traffic to clear. I'd pile up cans and bottles separately, since the local homeless people wanted to collect them to turn in for a little cash.

To this day, after a concert or a movie, I make a point of picking up my own trash and at least one other item that isn't mine on the way out.

163 I had to chuckle at the protesters who were wearing the little vagina facemasks- (I think I saw it on Watter's World). Some type of pink fabric doohickey surrounding their face. Several thoughts occurred to me.

1. The ultimate retreat into a safe space. (never mind the irony that fetuses are not safe in that particular space.

2. Curled up in the fetal position?

3. Talk about a womb with a view.

168 If the press doesn't want team Trump coming after them there is something very simple they can do; don't lie about him. Notice Trump didn't go after anyone when the Access Hollywood tape appeared.

He is not like Barack Obama - who went after Sharyl Attkisson when she published the true story of the Fast and Furious scandal. Of course lying about Republicans is what the press is all about - if they are reduced to the truth what are they going to write; that Melania looked beautiful stylish and elegant?

Many people like being dependent, since it means no decisions and consequently, no personal responsibility.

Also... "lazy."

I know a number of people-- more than a handful-- that have been on unemployment EVERY year since the 1980's due to the "lack of work" clause.

They like that because it gives them time to work on their hobbies and their music.

Simple...

It was up on every news agency, as headline news...

It was a coordinated propaganda move to delegitimize the incoming Administration.

And WAS flat out Propaganda from the Press... THEY don't know... they have no proof of their allegation.... yet ran it everywhere...

Same with the 'MILLIONS of protesters who are protesting the Trump administration' Headline which is STILL up on MSN.... which is most probably false, as Millions means more than 2 Million...

If you don't call them on their propaganda from the outset... from the very beginning.. you will lose....

If they are fighting all the time, and you only fight half the time.... you lose.

And all that storyline seems to have done for them is blunt the attack against Trump that he's an out of touch rich guy.

Once again, Donny boy's Trump-Fu is too much for their Lie-kwon-do.

As a female, I would not have attended the inauguration or the crazy chick protest. Too many nut jobs, way too much of a chance that something bad could happen.

I have to think that a lot of people stayed home because of the threat of violence. So to some extent, their threats by the left worked.

However... at what cost?

Right now, a lot of conservatives are looking at the co-workers, neighbors and relatives in a different light, especially if they participated in violance.

201 The interactive photos from CNN posted by a moron earlier in the thread is well worth looking at. It shows the crowd at it's peak and it's well into being close to if not equal to Obamas.

The WH has pointed out in various ways that many of the photos being published that purport to show a much smaller crowd were taken when the crowd was trying to get to the event and was standing on the covered areas of the mall. The Mall was covered in some kind of white textured material to lessens slip and falls and it shows up very well in less crowded areas. Early in the day, when less people were in place, the white ground makes an obvious visual statement that no one is standing there.

Look at the CNN interactive photo and the white ground is totally covered.

Exactly. And because GWB NEVER fought back, never corrected anything, just ignored it to the point of telling Dana Perino that she must forgive former administration jerks who wrote tell all books that were derogatory toward Bush , that we all are now, 8 years later, dealing with a huge segment of the population that believes everything that comes from the msm or internet and who don't know anything about how government or the constitution, courts etc. are supposed to work. Anyway, she wanted a sense of hope for her daughter and she felt it was a very moving experience. I tried to not make any faces in church.

And in the meantime while the FNM is chasing trivia to cover for their condescending sneer about the "low attendance" Trump's team is working on real goals.

248 Hey Sean and Rance, here are your talking points for any further crowd size comparisons:

1. there's no way to accurately count the number of attendees depending on the picture angle, time of day, and how it's cropped.

2. That said, if Obama's crowds were bigger, and that's if, the nearest Trump county is fifty miles away; his supporters needed at least a car or train trip. Obama supporters had a shorter commute. .

3. Trump supporters have heard or experienced violence at the hands of Obama and Clinton supporters, and one report revealed organized plans to harm them. They wouldn't want to expose their families, children or property to the largely under reported violence Obama/Clinton supporters constantly inflict on Trump supporters. Throughout the campaign, the Democrats were almost totally silent about this violence, by the way, and the media never asked a single Democrat about that violence.

4. I question the utility of the MSM comparing the turnout between the two inaugurals. What was that information meant to achieve for an event designed to celebrate national unity?

5. MSM Delenda Est. FYNQ.

271 One small criticism on my part. I don't understand
why he spent so much time trying to explain any attendance numbers in
comparison to Obama. The left is all about delegitimizing Trump (he
didn't win the popular vote, he didn't have as many attendees at the
inauguration, we had more protesters in the streets, etc.). I would
have preferred Spicer said something along the lines of, "That is an
interesting but ultimately irrelevant observation. Donald Trump is the
duly elected President of the U.S. and he is eager to get to work."

Posted by: Muldoon at January 22, 2017 11:02 AM (wPiJc)

I haven't read all the comments on this from yesterday and today, but I think it was to kill two birds with one stone.
First, it was the National Park Service that tweeted out the comparison photos of Obama/Trump crowds that the media ran with. After that tweet, a cease and desist order of all twitter accounts to every department was issued, but the damage was done.
I don't know if anybody here saw it, but much, much later yesterday evening, the NPS offered up an apology that basically said, "Ooops, our bad, we're so, so sorry. Hee-hee-hee."

Second, the Martin Luther King bust being removed tweet. Like somebody else here said, it was retweeted thousands of times but the apology/correction was virtually ignored.
So I think the Spicer lecture was pretty much a gigantic blanket statement putting everybody on notice that this shit will not be tolerated, no matter who you are. The best way to go as far as I'm concerned. And I hope that NPS employee is put on lawn duty until his or her retirement.

As far as that comparison picture, you can totally tell they were taken at different times of the day by the shadows on the buildings.

285 OK. I have figured out that the left - which at this point includes virtually all liberals, moderate or not - has but one thing on its mind. And that is to destroy Trump and his voters.

They are going to put every bit of their energy for the next four years into this, because, see, they are not SUPPOSED to lose. They HAVE to take this back.

This means they will obstruct everything there is, and scream their heads off whatever Trump does or says. He could cure cancer and bring Elvis back from the dead and they will NOT relent.

They care about destroying him (and us) far, far more than they care about the country. To me, this bodes ill for the future, as they seem to be the ones determined to foment civil war.

Of course, I could be wrong about that. I hope so. But in any case, we are in for a very long haul of shenanigans worse than any shenanigans they ever perpetrated before. And constant and unrelenting.

287 Trump has a book written with another guy. It is called Think Big: Make It Happen In Business and Life.

There are bullet point summaries of the chapters. Here are the bullet points from the chapter titled Revenge:

When somebody screws you, screw them back in spades.

Forgive good people, but never forgive someone who is bad.

When someone attacks you publicly, always strike back.

If you want to stop a bully, hit them right between the eyes. They will think twice about doing it again.

Even some of the toughest top athletes are schmucks who let people steal from them and are afraid to get even.

Always have a good reason to get even.

Go for the jugular so that people watching will not want to mess with you.

If someone knows they made a mistake and they apologize, forgive them and move on, but never trust them again.

294 I think votermom is correct.

It's time to push back hard. We're not going to have this chance again.

We're where we are currently at because too many among us said, "You can't do that! Someone might get angry!"

For those of a certain age, we remember what happened when we threw a screaming tantrum at the store. Mom or Dad or both acted like adults and punishment was swift and severe. They weren't worried about You can't do that! because they knew if they didn't deal with the childish behavior the child would grow into a monster.

We let these people grow into monsters because too many people allowed themselves to be shamed by the You can't do that! crowd. So we did nothing and the child has become a monster. By the millions. There was never any push back, which only served to reinforce the bad behavior.

Now here we are.

Grandpa Donald Trump, however, has decided the children need a good thrashing, and he's not about to listen to the You can't do that! crowd because Grandpa Trump knows what happens when you encourage outrageous behavior.

Get on the Trump train or get out of the way because we're doing this.

303 The Dems and the media (birm) constantly denigrate conservatives, hoping to pound home by simple repetition what they cannot convince people of through fair debate.

Given the damage they have already done to the critical thinking abilities of many Americans, the only way forward for us is to get in their faces about every lie they tell, which means getting in their faces pretty much continuously. And when they complain, laugh in their faces and mock their weakness. It is the only way.

True comment:
If you ever need proof that the left is mentally, morally, and genuinely unfit to possess any power, you only need to read this article. They are depraved, debauched, and unfortunately very determined. They actually believe that they have a right to rule over the rest of us. It will be a daily battle to fight their evil intentions. While I believe President Trump has what it takes to defeat them, I am not sure our squishy Republicans have the wherewithal to fight them or even hold the line against them. Pray for the President and everyone willing to take the fight to these fascists. If we fail to understand that they are deadly serious and respond accordingly, there is no way we can restore this country. This is war. The left declared it the day after the election and we must be prepared to answer them. Buckle in, it is going to be a bumpy ride, but if we are victorious, it will all be worth it. Never forget or doubt that they will do ANYTHING to defeat Trump. Anything.
