His public take - per force limited and general and until now academic - on the JCPOA (Iran debacle) has been unimpressive, in that he talks about making it work or enforcing it strictly.
The Iran nuke deal was a disaster in its own terms (nukes), to be sure. But it's real damage was in the demolition of a fragile complex scaffolding of pressure and containment against the regime, which took years to construct and was yielding real fruit.
Almost not even Mattis' area where the real problem is, but his few words so far on it weren't inspiring.

I admit that in my experience it's harder to cut someone out of your life if they're an adult about everything, except politics. I have a friend I only recently reconnected with, who has been giving me some great video training (he continued working in video after I had to leave Lakewood Community Television public access, because the city shut it down).
Anyway, the guy is smart, funny... he's an atheist but not at all evangelical about it... but when it comes to Trump? Unfortunately he seems to have come a bit unhinged.
We've been able to stay civil in our online FB arguments about it, thank God. But I admit I was *really* worried what he might post this week. I was fearful I would have to block him, and maybe stop hiring him if he goes off the deep end.
Thankfully this week, he seems to be avoiding commenting about anything at FB. Even today, he's been silent, which I am personally thankful for. :-)

well true it takes away their revenue if we are selling more, and not importing. But it is still a global market, so lower price also means lower revenue for countries largely dependent on oil. It is both.
It is the fact that we are increasing supply that will drive down price, even as economy picks up if we open enough areas.

Schumer could be in a very strong position, if he was willing to play his hand the right way. Trump and the GOP leadership have some differences on some issues. If Schumer was willing to play nice with Trump on some of those issue, he could make his party look (somewhat) reasonable to the middle of the electorate. He could position his party as being willing to work with Trump on some stuff, but act as a check on him on the stuff too far to the right.
But, I don't think his base will let him play that game. They are demanding total war. Always obstruct everything. It will cost them in 2018.

The article talks about just this. They're going to try and drive wedges between GOPe and the pro-Trumpers. Especially on things like the infrastructure bill.
Also the article mentions the Dem base is deeply suspicious of Schumer and how he opposed Obama on things like Israel.

But yeah, our trade deficit is helped if we export instead of import oil. But we won't be major exporters like some nations. Lower energy prices help our economy in other ways, more than what little we make on oil exports at $50 instead of $35. And lower energy is good for the "little people", and they can spend the savings on other things.

Oh, and then they also steal our technology, and/or send illegals here to work cheap, who then send the money back to the homeland rather than having it circulate in our economy to fund roads, schools etc.
This was sold under the phony rubric of "free trade", and ignoring the limitations of "comparative advantage". We were supposed to have global free trade nirvana by now, instead we have China arming up against us, and buying up our assets, deficits higher than ever. Trump knew this back in 1990 and testified to a congressional finance committee about it. And he said tax policy was pushing money into global stock markets instead of building America (real estate at the time, was his issue)

I do industrial automation integration for a living.
Automation makes labor costs cheaper per unit produced. In theory ... it really could have eliminated the most labor-intensive jobs faster than maintenance and tech jobs could catch up.
In practice ... factories ran to Mexico and SouthEast Asia faster than we could build enough shit to save anybody.
We ain't losing factories to China because of a lack of automation. Not by a long shot.

It's not just that these polls are flawed. There is some truth in them. Obama came into office in 2009 with sky high approvals. He didn't get hit with billions of negative branding the way that Trump did.

yeah the old OPEC cartel tries to fix the price, but has been less successful lately. and I said global market, not "free". The price is close to the same globally.
at $50 we become major exporter? Is that because fracking makes our domestic oil that much more profitable at that price? If CA really needs money so bad, they should drill off their coast ... east coast too I guess.
Anyway, if oil is at $35, that puts more pressure on Russia and the ME. I'm not sure where fracking breaks even ... depends on the site I guess, and they keep getting better. Obama said "electricity prices must necessarily skyrocket", but I think cheaper energy is a better way to redistribute wealth.

I've also seen a longer list of much of his extensive personal library. He is clearly a tactician, but he's also a great leader, and has been particularly focused on past conflicts and the mistakes, assumption, successes and failures of others. I feel very confident that he will be an amazing Sec.Def/advisor to Pres. Trump, and will be a good counterweight to Mike Flynn... I'm definitely a fan of the Warrior Monk.
