INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WTHR) - During the very moments Donald J. Trump was inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States, Hoosiers gathered in downtown Indianapolis for a unity rally promoting inclusion, support and respect. The scheduling was not accidental. "I'm so happy to be here at this time of day on this date," said retired Rabbi Sandy Sasso of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck. Just as Trump took the oath of office as President, nearly 200 people took an oath on Monument Circle to not only protect and defend the Constitution, but also each other. "If you're an immigrant, we stand with you. If you're Muslim or LGBTQ, we stand with you. If you're a person of color, we stand with you," said Jane Henegar, ACLU Indiana. ace, I don't think Mattis is strategy-challenged, at least vs. the last several SecDefs - obviously.
His public take - per force limited and general and until now academic - on the JCPOA (Iran debacle) has been unimpressive, in that he talks about making it work or enforcing it strictly. The Iran nuke deal was a disaster in its own terms (nukes), to be sure. But it's real damage was in the demolition of a fragile complex scaffolding of pressure and containment against the regime, which took years to construct and was yielding real fruit. Almost not even Mattis' area where the real problem is, but his few words so far on it weren't inspiring. Posted by: ace at January 20, 2017 06:36 PM (8rNrN) But that is not the Militaries Arena to play in. They are specifically prohibited from getting involved in American Politics... or the Media... or Social Policy. The Militaries job is to get break shit and kill people in foreign countries... to try to get them to do other missions diminishes their ability to do their primary job... And those other missions are the jobs of State, DHS, and the so called 'Intelligence' services. Posted by: Don Q. at January 20, 2017 06:41 PM (qf6WZ) 138

"Sound energy policy begins with the recognition that we have vast untapped domestic energy reserves right here in America. The Trump Administration will embrace the shale oil and gas revolution to bring jobs and prosperity to millions of Americans. We must take advantage of the estimated $50 trillion in untapped shale, oil, and natural gas reserves, especially those on federal lands that the American people own. Kraut wants more neo-con power, but if we push oil exploration and development and fracking keeps developing, that can bring oil down to ? say $35/brl. That weakens the Russian and Middle East war machines more than anything.
Part of the Iraq war in the first place (allegedly) was about Greenspan saying it was vital to the global economy to keep ME oil flowing, and shipping lanes open. Somehow they still pushed oil to $100/brl plus ... and terror and war went the wrong way. Cheap energy good for the people ... less good for warring oligarchs in oil countries. Husband had taped the earlier part so I got to listen to NBC commentary this time. They actually said that Trump had never run anything as large as the government. Of course, they had no problem with President Boyfriends lack of experience. And they said that GWB had his government all ready to go and Trump somehow doesn't. And implied Trump won't work on the weekends, like the National Security people do. It's like they are completely clueless as to TJEF's way of running the government.
And it looks like the NeverTrumpers will be trotted out as "true" Republicans. Oh, and all those empty seats with no mention of the protesters preventing people from getting to them. It was really a disgusting display. Posted by: Notsothoreau at January 20, 2017 07:04 PM (QX0Xt) 239
Hey everybody.
All Hail Eris, is this office lib really an "otherwise fine fellow" outside of politics, or is that sarcasm? ;-) I admit that in my experience it's harder to cut someone out of your life if they're an adult about everything, except politics. I have a friend I only recently reconnected with, who has been giving me some great video training (he continued working in video after I had to leave Lakewood Community Television public access, because the city shut it down). Anyway, the guy is smart, funny... he's an atheist but not at all evangelical about it... but when it comes to Trump? Unfortunately he seems to have come a bit unhinged. We've been able to stay civil in our online FB arguments about it, thank God. But I admit I was *really* worried what he might post this week. I was fearful I would have to block him, and maybe stop hiring him if he goes off the deep end. Thankfully this week, he seems to be avoiding commenting about anything at FB. Even today, he's been silent, which I am personally thankful for. :-) Posted by: qdpsteve at January 20, 2017 07:04 PM (u8kLQ) 240

http://tinyurl.com/h9qong4 They actually don't have a lot of bad to say about Trump's specifics. Unlike the MSM talking heads today who called the speech dark, dystopian, antisemitic and Hitlerian (I'm not making this up). Some noteworthy disputes on substance as one commentator says that America has never been wealthier and another says our cities have never been safer (at least until 2015). If Trump delivers on jobs, and our inner cities share, Trump can get 40% of the minority vote in 2020. Huge! Posted by: Ignoramus at January 20, 2017 07:28 PM (SIY7D) 402

I know that Trump had no intention of dissing our true allies but that's the danger of of Trump speak. His focus was solely on America. It was our half time locker room speech. Trump values loyalty and our allies know that and know he will stand with them. Try to screw us though and it will come back on them and they also know that now. The kraut put himself in that common yet tricky position: if he's serious about some of the things, he's an idiot, otherwise why is he saying things he doesn't believe?
Specifically the nonsense about "allies" being worried. Are you kidding me? It's just a speech. Foreign leaders will deal with him, as with any prez, on a practical level, and probably give wide latitude for political elbow room. Allies of consequence (Israel, Australia, Egypt, etc.) are immensely relieved at his assumption of power. One idiot (ID unknown) on the 5 min. of FoxNews audio I caught earlier was fretting about "oh what must Teresa May think?" WTFF? Trump has already made it clear - even in public, and in private more so - that he's placing the UK at the center of our Euro relationships, as it has long been, to include an interest in getting the best possible bilateral trade deal to help with Brexit. The absurd, cartoonish, teenager-level nature of commentary (sorry, the Kraut does more than his share) on serious topics is stunning, when one is occasionally exposed to it. 395 trump's focus on manufacturing is worthwhile, but to see the loss of mnfting jobs as a result of foreign malfeasance of some kind or our own duplicity is limited. automation has something to do with it, also labor costs (do you blame mnfcters going to cheaper production?).
Posted by: musical jolly chimp at January 20, 2017 07:28 PM (WTSFk) It's not in our economic interest to lose our higher value-added jobs, such as manufacturing engineered products, to cheap foreign labor in non-regulated locales. If we allow unlimited importation of products made with third world labor, then the economic effect will be to drive our own working class down to third world standards. It's a similar phenomenon to allowing unlimited importation of third world labor directly into the US - it drives our American work force down to a third world standard of living. And since we try to maintain a first world welfare state, the costs rapidly become disconnected and as we see, our debt level soars to cover the spending entailed by first world level entitlements. If one has a globalist mindset, then fine. Who cares what happens to American workers, as long as I can get something cheaper from China? But if one wants to see the country stronger, then it's a situation of concern. Posted by: Scalia's Ghost at January 20, 2017 07:37 PM (hA1V+) 469

You're right, foreign countries did not steal our jobs. Our government virtually gave them away. Posted by: Bill R. at January 20, 2017 07:47 PM (jKUeC) 566
" the idea that foreign nations stole our jobs is simplistic and inaccurate. "
they didn't steal them ... the multinationals bribed our government to open trade where they could use foreign "slaves", pollute at will, avoid 100 regulations, and sell back into debt ridden US without tariff, while those (often enemy) nations did not reciprocate. (they find several ways to restrict our imports). Oh, and then they also steal our technology, and/or send illegals here to work cheap, who then send the money back to the homeland rather than having it circulate in our economy to fund roads, schools etc. This was sold under the phony rubric of "free trade", and ignoring the limitations of "comparative advantage". We were supposed to have global free trade nirvana by now, instead we have China arming up against us, and buying up our assets, deficits higher than ever. Trump knew this back in 1990 and testified to a congressional finance committee about it. And he said tax policy was pushing money into global stock markets instead of building America (real estate at the time, was his issue) Posted by: illiniwek at January 20, 2017 07:47 PM (uFxPi) Posted by: Mega at January 20, 2017 07:47 PM (EdXI9) 568

395 trump's focus on manufacturing is worthwhile, but to see the loss of mnfting jobs as a result of foreign malfeasance of some kind or our own duplicity is limited. automation has something to do with it, also labor costs (do you blame mnfcters going to cheaper production?).
Posted by: musical jolly chimp at January 20, 2017 07:28 PM (WTSFk) I do industrial automation integration for a living. Automation makes labor costs cheaper per unit produced. In theory ... it really could have eliminated the most labor-intensive jobs faster than maintenance and tech jobs could catch up. In practice ... factories ran to Mexico and SouthEast Asia faster than we could build enough shit to save anybody. We ain't losing factories to China because of a lack of automation. Not by a long shot. Posted by: ScoggDog at January 20, 2017 07:48 PM (fiGNd) 570

Democrats have been completely overrun by the most hyperemotional,

It's not just that these polls are flawed. There is some truth in them. Obama came into office in 2009 with sky high approvals. He didn't get hit with billions of negative branding the way that Trump did. But there's upside for Trump. If he does a good job much of his negatives will wash away. George Washington's 2nd inaugural address:
Fellow Citizens: I AM again called upon by the voice of my country to execute the functions of its Chief Magistrate. When the occasion proper for it shall arrive, I shall endeavor to express the high sense I entertain of this distinguished honor, and of the confidence which has been reposed in me by the people of united America. Previous to the execution of any official act of the President the Constitution requires an oath of office. This oath I am now about to take, and in your presence: That if it shall be found during my administration of the Government I have in any instance violated willingly or knowingly the injunctions thereof, I may (besides incurring constitutional punishment) be subject to the upbraidings of all who are now witnesses of the present solemn ceremony. yeah the old OPEC cartel tries to fix the price, but has been less successful lately. and I said global market, not "free". The price is close to the same globally. at $50 we become major exporter? Is that because fracking makes our domestic oil that much more profitable at that price? If CA really needs money so bad, they should drill off their coast ... east coast too I guess. Anyway, if oil is at $35, that puts more pressure on Russia and the ME. I'm not sure where fracking breaks even ... depends on the site I guess, and they keep getting better. Here's part of Gen. Mattis's reading list for Marines about to deploy, broken up by rank, as well as by theater of operation.
http://smallwarsjournal.com/blog/ltgen-james-mattis-reading-list I've also seen a longer list of much of his extensive personal library. He is clearly a tactician, but he's also a great leader, and has been particularly focused on past conflicts and the mistakes, assumption, successes and failures of others. I feel very confident that he will be an amazing Sec.Def/advisor to Pres. Trump, and will be a good counterweight to Mike Flynn... I'm definitely a fan of the Warrior Monk.
