Here's an experiment that anyone can do to realize just how great this is. If you can still find one, find a phone book. Look at it from on edge. There will be white pages, yellow pages and (usually) blue pages. The blue pages are government. Now thumb through those pages and stop randomly. Look at some of the jobs and titles there. Complete waste and BS. And remember, your taxes pay for that phone, that phone line, and as that phones rings on a desk, the computer that is sitting next to the phone. The waste is enormous. The one knock I usually concede regarding Trump is that I don't know how serious he is about "smaller" government, at least on his watch.
I hope the rumors are true that he does plan some real fiscal reforms. But I really think the conservative agenda is far more likely to be scuttled by asshole Republicans in the Senate that said they couldn't support Trump because he wasn't a true conservative that will now try and enable to Democrats so they can have their "I told you so" moment. Posted by: Maritime at January 19, 2017 01:59 PM (PqoGA) 66
Yes, yes, yes, only delivered results, in the form of appropriations bills (remember those??), will "mean anything".
But that such talk is even refreshing, stirring, notable, etc. is another measure of how far down the tubes we are. And how useless the GOP has become. Others have pointed it out already, but we're in a situation where the Dems (vile, deranged, un-American, irresponsible, and generally stupid) are hardly an issue. It's Ryan and his ilk that are the main thing standing between us and a freer, more prosperous, more secure, more American America. Posted by: rhomboid at January 19, 2017 01:59 PM (QDnY+) 67

It will be interesting to see how the cuts, if any, are reported on. It has always, heretofore, been reported as if any tiny little change in the rate of growth in a government program is a dramatic cut of mammoth proportions that will cause the death or unemployment of millions.
But NOW, do they report cuts in growth as the minimalist trivia it is, or go along as they always have shrieking at the unfairness of it all, thereby giving Trump credit for keeping a campaign promise. Or, since every proposed cut has always been the worst thing ever, how can they report actual bloodletting? More popcorn, please. And maybe some Raisinettes and a Coke while you're up. Given the way Trump has been playing the MSM, I would think that:
A] He's doing this as stray voltage - driving the narrative to what he wants it to be to drive the Left nuts with fear - and/or - B] Being Mr. "Art of the Deal" this is opening bid - drastic cuts! - which is setting the stage for negotiating these drastic cuts down to not-quite-as-drastic cuts in which the feds will tell themselves was a win for them. Dramatic cuts. To Shakespeare-in-The-Park grants, and Cowboy Poetry.
Get it? Pretty cute. This is momentous for the actual grass roots of arts in the country, and I'll tell you why. Before the Great Society, things like your Civic Symphony, the local ballet troupe, and the art museum were usually established by old money fat cats as a hobby. Then, the Little People demanded to be allowed to contribute. It's been so long, many of you will not even recognize this, but that's how it was. It all depended on civic pride. And National Endowments bulldozed all that. Old-line rich philanthropists were nervously edged out and replaced by Corporate Giving advisers. Every arts organization, in order to survive, is now run by Arts Administrators. Grantsmanship first, and then please the Commission. It would take a truly inspiring level of social collapse for classical theater and music to pay for themselves with ticket sales. But, taking the "giving" out of the hands of tax-distributors and putting the arts' hats back in their hands would make a revolutionary and, I'll dare say, refreshing change. One of the Big Lies that we've all been fed for years is that "Cutting spending is Hard!!!"
Cutting is actually ridiculously easy, except when you have a pile of vested interests to protect. If you don't give a f*ck about any of those interests, then cut away, and who cares? They're going to whine, but fired employees always whine. Example - a bill has been introduced to eliminate the ATF. About f*cking time!!! The only reason the ATF exists is so the Justice Dep't can have some guys of its own with all those cool tactical weapons and they don't have to ask the FBI for it. WELL CUT THAT WHOLE AGENCY RIGHT NOW! The firearms stuff, send over to the FBI, the alcohol and tobacco stuff, give it back to the states to enforce which is where it always belonged. (c'mon, interstate bootlegging hasn't been a big issue for about 80 years now) There is absolutely no reason for ATF to exist, other than to give an office building full of bureaucrats boners when they look at the shiny uniforms. We could go through all kinds of stuff. Why does Energy look after nuclear weapons? They shouldn't. Give that entire division to the DoD, and let them take care of it with their budget and their people. That's what streamlining is. On and on - it really ain't that hard. It would take a truly inspiring level of social collapse for classical theater and music to pay for themselves with ticket sales. 1 The Washington "Dumb As a" Post: The media has the freedom, the consumers have the responsibility.
http://tinyurl.com/hykkvvv "Good journalists work extremely hard to report the news as accurately as possible. When they get things wrong, they take responsibility for their errors or are held accountable by their employers. But who holds a reader or viewer or listener responsible for ignoring credible stories or spreading easily verified false reporting? If news consumers want to go after journalists for how we do our jobs, they'd better make sure they are doing theirs. A free press is all of us now." That is so packed with fake news, it's hard to know where to begin. "Good journalists work extremely hard to report the news as accurately as possible." To the extent this implies that the Postest with the Mostest employs good journalists who aim for the truth, that is a lie. "When they get things wrong, they take responsibility for their errors or are held accountable by their employers." Yeah, when's the last time that ever happened? For more common is disciplining reporters for being too concerned with factual truth and not sufficiently concerned with the larger truth of the narrative. This rant could be more succinctly written as, "You fucked up. You trusted us." Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks. Laugh at a joke, get another joke free! at January 19, 2017 02:24 PM (Nwg0u) 272

Overall, the blueprint being used by Trump's team would reduce federal spending by $10.5 trillion over 10 years.
Is that actually REDUCE or reduce relative to planned growth "estimates"? If that is really "reduce" then this is really something. Sadly, the $1 trillion/yr reduction will be totally eaten up by the rise in the cost of servicing our gargantuan debt (when interest rates return to normal). If interest rates pass by "normal" (as they are want to do) then there are going to have to be even more REAL cuts. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at January 19, 2017 02:28 PM (zc3Db) 290

Clueless caller to Rush, who exhibits his own ignorance in "correcting" the clueless caller.
Caller says (derp!) Trump should replicate Clinton!'s economic policies, which produced balanced budgets! *face-palm* Rush says no, Clinton didn't do it, Gingrich did! On the back of the continuing Reagan boom. *face-palm* The tech boom (isn't Rush a tech fanboi?) of the mid-90s was entirely responsible for the near-balancing of budgets. Run the current services trendlines, and the revenue trendlines (absent the tech boom with its massive unexpected revenue windfalls), you still get red budget ink under Congress's budgets. Of course the caller was even more clueless than Rush, but it's a matter of degree. The last cycle before the "balanced" budget era started, Clinton's OMB director (the wealthy, scratch-golf game, Bermuda-estate-owning guy who as head of FNHMA oversaw the destruction of US financial markets via officially-promoted mortgage derivatives, Franklin Raines), said that balancing the budget at that time without devastating effects on govt. services would take 10 YEARS. Stipulating the central unscientific assertion of the environmental authoritarians - that human activity has *any* impact on climate - is a fundamental and unrecoverable error. It enshrines illogical and unscientific analysis, it doesn't limit or expunge it.

Rick Perry believes "climate change" is real? OK, then
Okay, a Freeman Dyson would have parsed it more accurately, but...what Perry said was unobjectionable. It is likely that human activity plays a part in climate change. It is also likely that part is vanishingly small, a point that Perry did not raise and that his questioners did not wish to raise. And his point that economic impact needs to be taken into account...I'm sure a Monckton could have spun a better tale, but what Perry said is honest and accurate enough to get him past the hearing with minimal hassle. Because it's meaningless. It's all kabuki but that doesn't mean you want to lose points in the process. I don't believe the polls but I do believe that the media and roughly half the country is looking for any excuse to pounce on Trump. Why feed them ammo when you want the public behind you? The process of promoting this conjecture as so corrupted aspects of the physical sciences, esp. weather data collection, that the new admin. can make gigantic contributions just getting those things back to normal. NOAA/NASA, with some real kooks in charge, has destroyed the credibility of what should be reliable climate data. If they do nothing but return some integrity to simple things like surface temperature collection, it could deal a serious blow to the lysenkoism that has ravaged parts of science. I have to think that this is only one aspect of the plan. The idea of eliminating departments and reducing staffing could add up to a lot more than a hundred billion a year. And the timeline is always a question. It all depends on what happens between now and 2027, how well the GDP does (with resulting increases in tax revenues) and so forth. A trillion a year in discretionary spending, that's all this is, is a metric fuckload. Late to the thread so this has probably been discussed already, but I think what's happening here is Trump is doing his usual play: open with a sky-high offer and then let the opponent whittle you down to something that's less than you asked for, but more than they expected. Then everyone gets to feel like they "won."

No matter the problem, the prescription is always the same. Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 19, 2017 02:50 PM (92kX2) To this day, I'm stunned by the fact that no one argues that the answer to any kind of climate change is cheap and plentiful energy! Cheap energy (and a robust infrastructure) allows you to counteract the effects of climate whether its too hot or too cold. Imagine a politician saying "We're not going to worry about climate change, because we'll have the cheap energy to overcome whatever Mother Nature will bring!" As to what's causing climate change? Considering the forces involved, I'd consider us just above ants and beavers in having the ability to affect the climate. Compared to the forces of gravity, and radiation from all sorts of heavenly bodies, our contribution is probably negligible. When you consider the Fukishima quake altered the earth's rotation on its axis, and actually moved Japan closer to China, to the Mt. Pinatubo eruption which spewed out more pollution than all of man's industrial activity combined, its pretty clear where we are on the climate change pecking order. But it doesn't fit the liberal agenda, so we won't hear it. Posted by: Iblis at January 19, 2017 03:04 PM (9221z) 467

I think framed and limited properly you can get hypothesis from it. But you certainly can't get to theory because there's no possible falsification test. And if the Trump administration wanted to make heads explode they'd establish a guide that it should be referred to as the 'climate change hypothesis'. Because the warmists want to consider it fact. So far, Trump has said no cuts to entitlements and an increase in military spending. We shall see.
___________________ He could cut entitlement spending immediately without actually cutting entitlements, and here's how: enforce the laws as written. For example, for 8 years now the Obama administration has knowingly been paying out billions of dollars a year in food stamps to illegal aliens, even though the food stamp enabling act requires recipients to be citizens or legal residents of the U.S. Obama, as he did with so many other things, simply decided to ignore the law in the interests of "fairness" (as he defines it). If Trump were to order HHS to audit the food stamp rolls and eliminate every recipient that is not legally eligible to receive the benefits, he could save taxpayers billions of dollars a year -- all without cutting benefits. Another program where the Obama administration was knowingly paying out billions a year in benefits to illegal aliens: the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits program. Just a few thousand illegal aliens account for billions of dollars a year (IIRC, something like $19b, per a Washington Post story) in that program. Stop that bullshit, and billions more savings -- again, without cutting any benefits to Americans or legal residents. Another program paying out billions a year to illegal aliens: the IRS and its phony-baloney "tax credit" program. Stop that bullshit, and billions more savings every year. Do this consistently across 80 or so of the different federal welfare programs, and pretty soon you'll have some real savings. As an added bonus, you'll significantly reduce the incentive for poor and crooked foreigners to sneak illegally into the U.S. in hopes of jumping aboard the U.S. Welfare Gravy Train. I was flipping channels last night and the beginning of L&O:SVU came on. Was a rich kid hitting on a waitress at a party bragging that he lived in the hotel. I was like oh crap, this is a thinly veiled Trump dig episode, isn't it? So I decided to watch the potential idiocy. I was not disappointed! Trump character in the show is a 75 year old billionaire businessman sexist pig Hef like playboy. His grandson who lives with him had sex with the waitress in the apartment he shares with Trump. Grandpa Trump then puts quaaludes in a drink after they have sex and rapes the waitress. His Trump-like family tries to protect him, but eventually the dad of the grandson reveals to his son that grandpa Trump raped his mom, also using quaaludes, which is why his parents divorced. Grandson comes clean about everything on the stand and grandpa Trump gets convicted of rape. Classy, NBC, to air this ep the SAME WEEK Trump is being sworn in. All I can say is Of Course. Of course. In an individual case it usually is a bad idea because it doesn't work and puts the client in a bad position. Most Plt lawyer's are the aggregate business however, if you see where I'm going with this. Stupid for the lawyer? - not so much. For an individual client? most often its not great. I have so much hope for our country, and things looked so dark for so many years under the shadow of Obama et al. Thank God it was not Hillery, Bill and Chelsea coming down that stairs.

"Inappropriately-dressed photographers"
Back during the Carter administration I had occasion to attend briefings in the White House press room and was always disgusted by the appearance of the White House photographers. I hope Trump puts in place a dress code for the press. It is an outrage for those guys to be doing their jobs while dressed like bums. I have worked as a press photographer (not White House) and know that three-piece suits are not appropriate for working with a bunch of camera gear, but that doesn't mean you can't get a haircut once in a while and wear clean clothes with polished shoes. "The changes they propose are dramatic."
I don't understand the skepticism. Anything other than unrestrained growth would be a dramatic change. Posted by: Mathers at January 19, 2017 04:09 PM (3myMJ) 591

For those wondering about how to take Trump's comments: you'll get a lot of insight from his book "The Art of The Deal"

\Another program paying out billions a year to illegal aliens: the IRS and its phony-baloney "tax credit" program. Honestly I'm willing to compromise on the Dreamers so long as serious border enforcement occurs, criminal aliens are deported and sanctuary cities are denied federal funds.

One of the things the media does that bothers me the most is use the far left position as the default position. Their questioning goes something like, "Republican, why are you evil?" "Democrat, why are Republicans so evil?"

I like how all the Trumps are so hands on with their kids. Lots of little interactions that show that the kids aren't strangers to the parents being raised by nannies.
