So googled Maher Bush and 2004 to see what he was saying then? Found that he told Chris Matthews in the 2004 election run up that W went to war in Iraq to avenge his Daddy (Saddam's supposed attempted assassination), a Texas thing you know. But THAT'S not crazy? Invading another country to settle a personal beef? Maher never heard of poison?

61 WASHINGTON -- A walker in Washington came across two guns in a violin case along the Potomac River on Wednesday, leading police to find several other weapons stashed in the area, officials said.

U.S. Park Police said a woman walking in the woods near the CO Canal, which runs along the river, found the case. When law enforcement officers arrived, they found more guns and ammunition -- some in pails, others in plastic garbage bags.

"At this point, we don't know how they got there, why they're here or when they got here," police spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Rose said.

She said officers found a variety of weapons, including long guns and pistols.

82 San Francisco Giants Baseball Hall of Famer Willie McCovey was granted a pardon by President Obama on a decades-old tax evasion charge, one of 64 pardons issued by the outgoing commander-in-chief on Tuesday.

The 79-year-old former slugger was sentenced in June 1996 along with fellow Hall of Famer Duke Snider to two years of probation and a $5,000 fine stemming from undeclared income received from baseball memorabilia shows. Snider died in 2011.

McCovey admitted at the time he failed to report $41,800 in income in 1989, when he made $87,000, and $69,800 in income received between 1988 and 1990.

106 "I always assumed it was out in the country somewhere, but I guess you really can't figure out anything from the name of anything in the UK."

It's just because everything is so old, it really was out in the field in the 1200's. And a Roman era burial has been found on the site dating to 410 A.D., suggesting a Christian presence on the site as far back as that, and that in turn may have been built on top of a Roman Temple dating back to the first or second centuries.

So it's old.

btw, Wren built St. Pauls, but Gibbs designed St. Martin in the Fields in 1722 (I looked it up on wiki) and if it looks familiar, it's because this is the design that got copied thousand of times for new church buildings in the U. S. You can find a copy in almost any US city of any size.

207 I believe that paintings like this one were done using reference photos as well as sketches. Paintings done completely from life require a subject that can hold still for at least 20 minutes at a time.

Camera obscuras were known and used as drawing aids as early as the 1600s. The art work of those and later times is still amazing but the use of photographic aids explains a lot about how they were achieved.

If you have not yet seen the doc "Bright Lights," on HBO, about Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Brilliantly produced film, which is essentially about their relationship. It is so loving and sweet, and bitterly sad now that they have died.

I had no idea. Never really considered either of them as human beings before... and that's my fault, but if you want to better understand the tragedy of them dying a day apart, watch this film.

Very cute that the painter has both the little girl and the dog looking directly at him, while the rest of the world finds him invisible. The doggy has that "give me a snack" look on his face.

290 Vic, I read your post earlier this morning.

You deserve to have a day of rebellion against your diagnosis and the doctors.

Then tomorrow, you need to make the appointment to consult with the Doc in Charleston. Find out exactly what needs to be done, the expected outcomes, etc. Knowing this puts you in control, not the cancer.

You can then make the decision that's best for you.

Meanwhile, for today, I appreciate you being pissed. I think everyone here feels the same way for you.

291 I hope Donald becomes the first president to have NO ONE read any poetry! And the first to tweet while listening to the proceedings, before he clutches the Bible and swears. What the hell, he should even turn his back on the crowd and take a selfie with them in the background. Heads would surely explode. After he takes the oath, I hope his twitter account goes dark except for weekends. The left is going to equate tweeting to golfing if he's not careful, and since they have the ear of the hell-spawn 50% that haven't smelled the coffee yet, that could be a ongoing drag on a nimble administration. Hope and Error Correction! Change is not bad, but you've got to debug it before you release it.

No. The driver should be on the side that is in the center of the road. That is the natural orientation. Best to judge the car's place in the road and best to deal with oncoming traffic in the lane next to him.

The argument against that is you can't see into the oncoming lane well enough to judge if you have room to 'overtake' the slow(er) moving traffic in front of you.

From back in the days of two lane roads before the freeway was invented.

There were also a contingent of people who supported him that thought he would destroy the mega banks, and bring Wall Street to heel . Many of them work for the government and feel their future was secure regarding pensions, jobs, benefits, etc. so why not. I was driving a truck, one day in South Vietnam, on a two lane road that had wide shoulders. The oncoming traffic turned that road into a four lane highway going one direction and I was looking at oncoming traffic with no where to go.

Luckily, the French expat, on the extreme right shoulder (from my perspective) in the Citroen had enough horsepower to pass all the other three lanes and get back on his side of the road before I had to punch a hole in the oncoming traffic. And I do have a picture of it, somewhere. I figured if I was going to die, my family deserved to see why.

As was stated earlier, his broker directed account, either Morgan Stanley or whomever he uses, bought and sold stock in one of his accounts and he made a huge profit of $300 on the sale.

As these investment fiduciary's do, they sent him a notice that the purchase had been made and his account deducted appropriate fees , etc. Like anyone who has a 401 K or retirement account that contains mutual funds, etc. and isn't an expert in stock trading, they give it to a broker to manage with an agreed upon investment strategy based on risk and closeness to retirement age.

It is a totally made up story, just as Franken yesterday asking Betsy DeVos if she was ready to denounce homosexual conversion therapy.

There's very few people it would really effect that had this issue on their mind, and many of them can't legally vote like say a 17 year old that wants to go to college.

I just seemed to run into a pretty angry sentiment from non-political people about the concept of free college. It pissed them off.

The fear though would be Republicans would probably have a "free college lite" version instead of actually opposing it.

449 the mad dictator dictated driving positions on the *outside* of the road

It's safer for the drivers in an offset-head-on collision. (At high speeds, though, it's more likely to cause offset-head-on collisions.)

"Roads" used by large mining trucks (i.e. Caterpillar 797) often run this way for that reason; putting the drivers between the two 400-ton loads would mean a closed-casket funeral, if the remains weren't more "jelly jar" material. Putting the drivers on the outsides gives them a chance at survival.

465 I'm hoping one of the cobs can find the interview this morning done by Maria Baritoromo of the CEO Martin Shkreli, of EpiPen fame.

Twitter is all aflutter because apparently, Shkreli has been banned from Twitter for "stalking and sexual harassment" according to the harridans on there. He did say in his interview that he was banned from Twitter because he posted a photoshop pic of some attractive woman's face in a multiplex type pic. and he believes that was an excuse to ban him because he is a Republican.

I don't know and don't care at this point. Maria had him on because he is a Trump supporter and is attending the inauguration and has a bunch of recommendations on how to bring drug prices down. He was very interesting to listen to, especially his suggestion that like is done in other countries, he believes that there should be a government facility that should produce older, generic type meds such as penicillin, epinephrine, etc. so that they quality could be monitored, but more importantly , these drugs could be manufactured for cost only and relieve drug companies from having to make a profit on them to support their manufacture.

She asked him about his experience on Capitol Hill and he was blunt. He said no one there wanted to actually learn or know anything about drug manufacturing, why epipens are expensive, etc. He said it was more like being in the principals office being yelled at so that al the Congressional members could preen and look good to their constituents. That they aren't interested in solving the problem of drug costs and drug quality(which he asserts is going down because manufacturers have run to China and India), they simply want to store up votes.

He hopes to work with the Trump administration to bring manufacturers back to the US.

Good interview, however, Maria is taking heat for not calling him a slimebag and allowing him to talk and answer intelligent questions.

It's sort of amusing when he's a sideshow but the idea of him making decisions like where to send troops in for war or his finger on the button would eventually catch up to him.

508 Early 60's, there were many schemes to put the driver in the middle, with a passenger on each side facing backward. The rationale was that people were most often killed by going through the windshield.

There were also plans to convert the steering wheel into two small wheels, lateral axis, beside the driver's seat, because drivers always died by being impaled by the steering column.

Different solutions appeared. I always wondered if the two front passengers would have been disoriented by the constant receding view (or at least bothered by not seeing where the car was headed), and, would the presence of the passengers faces basically at kissing distance not have been a great distraction to the driver, also partially blocking the view. At the very least it would have changed the dynamic of front-seat conversation, which is an oddity since people always talk while only marginally looking at each other.

Yes, he touched on that. He said that his company, like others, is spending money to buy these old patents to compete, whereas he feels that if the patent were bought by a non profit, and therefore wouldn't be competing with for profit drug companies, it would free up the cash for innovations and drug research. He said we are the leader in the world in drug development and that to stay there, we need to assist the drug companies in doing so.

He noted that another drug company, I don't recall the name, has a profit margin of 8% , yet CVS has a profit margin of 20%. His point was that drug companies are not raking in major cash like is imagined in the press and in consumers minds.

Again, it was a five minute interview. I do think people like him are who the new administration needs to receive ideas from. He said he was encouraged by the amount of business people, who are not in it for profit for themselves, are going to be in this administration.

Early 60's, there were many schemes to put the driver in the middle, with a passenger on each side facing backward. The rationale was that people were most often killed by going through the windshield.

The ultimate goal is for us to take public transportation or just sit at home in front of the telescreen.

Probably not a coincidence that the Dems want free college/loand forgiveness at a moment when it's become abundantly clear that much of what is "taught" in college nowadays is not just useless, but harmful to students. Generating a generation of radical feminists and various gender/race warriors makes them - and the rest of us - less happy, a less prosperous nation.

532 Since Obama has pardon the Puerto Rican terrorist and the traitor Bradley Manning couple of days before he leaves, my bet for who he'll pardon when we're paying attention to the inauguration-before his term actually ends I mean-is cop killer radical Joanne Chesimard (Can't recall her African name and don't care to look it up) and traitor Bowe Bergdahl. This will simultaneously show his appreciation for Castro's Cuba and for radical Islam and his disdain and dislike for America, the armed forces and for the police.

Talking to another person while you both face the same way. We do this every day. Outside of a car (or the bridge of a ship, or an airplane cockpit), it's unheard of. Watch people in a theater: when they talk about the film, which they do, they turn to face the other person.
