Countdown Monday Tuesday Overnight Thread (1/16/17) (1/17/17)

What did you spend the day doing? The ONT hopes you were up to nothing. Really. A National Nothing Day.

happy-hour-20170113-104.jpg

Tomorrow January 17th is a day that the Kennedy clan will celebrate.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Without tenderness, a man is uninteresting.-Marlene Dietrich

Quote II

Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future.- Lewis B. Smedes

Quote III

We are healed from suffering only by experiencing it to the full.- Marcel Proust

Quote IV

We should measure welfare's success by how many people leave welfare, not by how many are added.- Ronald Reagan

As we celebrate Obama's last Monday in office, the damage he has done is substantial.

Entitlement programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and food stamps have gained tens of thousands of beneficiaries under the Obama administration.

Will Trump and the GOP(e) ebb the flow? Time will tell.

Say good-bye to the ATF? Bill introduced to disband the ATF.

“F Troop” has long been the red-headed stepchild of federal law enforcement, passed around from Treasury, to Justice, back to Treasury, and finally back to Justice. The ATF has been routinely accused of incompetence, abusive prosecution, corruption, and has been responsible for a number of major controversies, including the Ruby Ridge siege, the Branch Davidian siege, and the smuggling of weapons to the Sinaloa drug cartel under Operation Fast and Furious and other alleged gun-running operations in other states that have never been adequately investigated.

The nation will be a better place. Goodbye Loretta Lynch, don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out of office.

Do you have children attending American University? Someone does and they are wasting their money.

“If it is determined that Russian efforts did indeed put Trump over the top in an incredibly close election, then the next step would be to pass a constitutional amendment requiring a one-time special election to be held as soon as possible,” Edelson wrote.

Perhaps "Professor" Edelson should review and digest tonight's Quote of The Day III.

170110_border-length-fence_v3.png

Donald Trump's original campaign promise was to build a wall. See where the fence could be built.

Trump and congressional Republicans say they could use a 2006 law signed by President George W. Bush called the Secure Fence Act that mandated a minimum of 700 miles of “physical barrier” on the southern border without specifying any particular location where fencing must be built.

Do you have hairy palms? Have you gone blind? Diseases caused by masturbation. In 1760 it was settled science.

The 2015 edition of Diseases Caused by Masturbation was originally titled L’Onanism. Dissertation sur les maladies produites par la masturbation.

The book recounts stories from his own patients and from the patients of other renowned European doctors to support his claim that masturbation is deleterious to a person’s body and mind. Tissot also uses quotes from the ancient physicians, such as Galen and Celsus, as well as the most noted doctors of his day, such as Herman Boerhaave, to further strengthen his claim.

We've all met someone who is annoying. Have you ever met someone so annoying that citizenship was not awarded to them? Meet Nancy Holten. One bad ass annoying PIA.

Nancy Holten, 42, is a self-described animal rights activist who has campaigned against the Swiss tradition of cow bells, calling them cruel.

Despite living in the country since the age of eight, and speaking fluent Swiss German, local residents vetoed her application of citizenship, saying they were “fed up” with her challenging their traditions.

deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new
way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our
future.- Lewis B. Smedes

---------

Excusez-moi, but this is utter claptrap and sounds like something Obama would say, if he chose to attempt to top "We are the crap we've been waiting for."

Forgiveness is something we do for ourselves. Letting go is like plugging up a sinkhole of bitterness and resentment. It doesn't change any memory of the past, it merely keeps it from distracting us from the possibilities of the future.

I could expand on this, but that's all you're getting.

For those who are interested: the new Cabelas in Gainesville, Va will open on March 9 at 9:45 am. The ribbon will be cut by shooting an arrow. (The article didn't specify if it would be a long bow or crossbow. Or something in between.)

I've ordered from Cabelas often enough but have never been in a store. I hope they will carry plenty of black powder gear and reloading tools. There are few places in the area that offer those items. I hope their merchandise lines won't be changed by the Bass Pro buyout.

In response to squeekywheel, I haven't heard anything about grants to open this Cabelas. It's possible but that kind of thing usually gets mentioned around here.

Re: Turn everyday items into weapons.

Here's one from my Teamster Dad who mentioned it in a story about "taking scabs off trucks during the Depression" or so it went. It came to me when he found out that I was visiting more multiculturally diverse neighborhoods than our own in search of more challenging basketball opportunities.

Start with a broadsheet newspaper. Roll it along the long dimension and then bend the roll in half. It yields about 10-inch reach extension with a rock on the business end. Handy bit of work.

122 One comment I wanted to make about the previous "Trump cutting Federal workforce" post.

After years of working with Federal workers and a few years actually in the Federal workforce, I can tell you that a 90% cut would have no effect at all on the quality of services.

Actual work in an agency is performed by very few people, because most folks are truly incompetent to perform the jobs that are required of them. They are instead given busy work to keep them out of the hair of the handful of competent people, and the heavy lifting is all done by contractors.

I was a GS15 with another GS15 working for me. I ended up making him handle all of the BS memos we would get from the Pentagon.

Sadly, the same can be said for many of the military stationed in the states.

Meh. It wasn't horrible, just mediocre. It spent way to much time on the personal life of the Mark Wahlberg character, one of the investigating Boston PD officers. His life doesn't seem relevant to the story of the bombing, at least not to me. I would have rather had more about the terrorists who carried it out, but, that would put the film makers in a pickle. They certainly wouldn't want to show the terrorists in any kind of positive light, because who wants to watch that bs? But, if they spent too much time showing their evil, well, then what about the backlash? What about the backlash?

If you get the chance to watch it for free, and you have a couple hours to kill, why not. But, I wouldn't pay for it or make it an outing or anything.

161 I used to work in law enforcement, and it's scary just how insane and destructive police administrators can be in their incompetence.

Case in point: we needed to update our software, which was literally still using 30 year old terminals to draw up reports, etc.

We took bids from several software firms, and of course took the lowest, cheapest bid, which oddly enough underbid the rest by a ridiculous amount. That along should have been a tell.

The result was a network wide installation of bloated software that literally used icons from Windows 3.x. It was so slow and buggy that a report that once took 2 minutes to enter in our ancient terminals now took 30 minutes to do on the new "cutting edge" system.

As far as I know, they are still using that clusterfuck of a software, and it has cost the local government literally millions in lost time.

I can just imagine how it must be at the federal level.

187 Onan was not struck dead because he was engaging in autoeroticism, but because he did not consummate the act with his wife. He denied her the right of Levirate marriage.

According to Genesis 38:8-10, Onan was the second of three sons of Judah. The oldest brother, Er, married a gal named Tamar, but died before they could have any children.

OT Jewish law required the next oldest brother in such circumstances to marry the brother's widow and have children by her to preserve the brother's family line and inheritance. Onan did marry Tamar, but, knowing that any children he would have with Tamar wouldn't legally be his but his brother's, "whenever he slept with his brother's wife, he spilled his seed on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight, so the LORD put him to death also."

Tamar's story just gets weirder from there; read Genesis 38 in full to see what I mean. Despite it all, Judah and Tamar ended up being ancestors of King David, and through him, Jesus.

We saw it yesterday and enjoyed it. I think you'll enjoy it, too.

It's touching but makes you feel good about the first responders protecting this country.

They stuck true to the events with the only exception being the character played by Mark Whalberg. Whalberg's character is based on a composite of several cops and is used to provide dramatic continuity.

At the end of the movie, they provide short interviews with around 8 or so of the real people whose stories are told in the movie.

It does show that. It also spends quite a bit of time on the gun battle between the terrorists and law enforcement. I was talking more about what they were up to before they built their bombs. How did they select their targets, What support did they have from others. How was it that they were able to live on welfare, travel overseas and back, what the government knew before the bombing took place, etc.

It seemed like the Wahlberg relationship was just filler to avoid the stuff I wanted to see more about.

217 Mike Hammer, you asked me for a report on that little Satechi mp3 player/FM transmitter. I put it to use yesterday and today in the Suburban. Seems to work just fine. Puts out enough signal to quieten the FM tuner across the whole band when not in the city close to the tower. When I was on Signal Hill in Calgary, I had to search for a quiet spot on the band and shift the unit's signal to that. And back home here, that's not quiet, but if the unit is on, it overrides the station on that channel.

Sound is as good as the source, I guess. Remote works OK; I need to learn its buttons better.

Bottom line: I am very satisfied with it.

In first grade, there were three Tammy's. I was one of them. I ended up Tami, and then we had a Tammy and a Tammie. Made things like homework simpler. Particularly since my name is actually Tamra. Without the extra a. But nobody ever called me that. To my dad, I'm still "L'il Bear."

Probably explains why I have an Aunt Skeet, and why my sister is Squeekbird (or just Squeek), and I also have an Auntie Mim, and Uncle Bub, etc.

Just found out last year that Skeet's real name is Eleanor. What was wrong with Ellie? But that's how family rolls.

307 SO, a question for the Horde.

A neighbor is keeping a dog leashed outside, for up to 10 hours a day, with no doghouse or shelter other than an open air carport. In temps down into the 40's some days.

Our county law states that the dog can't be leashed where it can get into a parking area or driveway. Hers can.

Law also states that dog must have a shelter. Hers does not.

I mentioned this to the HOA, but they are ignoring open violations of the animal welfare laws and stated that they didn't think what she was doing was neglect. Told them a couple of days ago that I'd prefer if they'd handle it without me having to call the sheriff out here, but that I would if I saw the neglect continuing. Didn't get any response back after my last mail and she's still leashing the dog the same way. Today it was raining on the dog and he barked for awhile to be let inside before she finally came out and took him in.

So, you think that I should go ahead and just call them ASAP, or give them a day or two and hope they get the message through to her?

Ultimately this is not a "making a rational case" question. It is a "working the bureaucrats" question. In your position, I would take pictures until I got some that made the situation absolutely clear. Then I would email them. Then I would drop by Kinkos or wherever and print them out and send them to the same place, using the mail technique that forces someone to sign and then you get the signed receipt.

If nothing happens after that, you can write to higher ups, referencing "my letter of XX/XX, which was received on XX/XX." The trick, always, is to make it easier for them to listen than to ignore. That's an art.

Decades ago, we had a neighbor that was doing something very similar. Actually it was worse, since he was outside in the winter in Michigan. My parents called the police and reported them; not only was the dog outside all the time, it barked for hours and hours on end.

Cop went over to the house, talked to the people.

Then came ouver to my parents house and was acting very VERY strange.

Turns out that neighbor made up a bunch of lies, and the cop was under the impression my Mom was going to attack him with a kitchen knife.

That was not going to happen.

All being said, I would wait a few days. And maybe call from someone elses house. Just to be careful.

Not the HOA's responsibility.

You're stuck with a personal decision. It sucks.
An alternative is to copy off the relevant statute and provide it to your neighbor. That is better than siccing the county on them, though they will probably resent the hell out of it.

341 The border barrier location, and nature, are a fairly straightforward exercise of common sense to the varying terrain and circumstances (lines of sight, terrain channeling).

Sort of like Japanese fortification of Okinawa in 1945.

Except we won't get to use Nambus, or mortars, or mines.

A barrier worth developing would be far more robust than even the best sectors today (which effectively shut off casual crossing). And that won't require anything very historic in terms of $$$, technology, or personnel. Pretty much girls' gym, to use a classic expression now out of use.

This thing is looonngg over-due, of course, and will represent about the 108th most difficult thing the US has done since 1960 or so. All talk of difficulty, and enormous cost, and lack of efficacy, are illiterate nonsense.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 17, 2017 11:28 PM (QDnY+)

342 The wall is in many respects just a small symbol of DC's unwillingness to stop illegal immigration in that only exacerbates an already obscene welfare/bureaucratic state. But is one that was promised by our Betters that have engaged in deception, denial, and plain obscene provincialism.

And, no, the wall doesn't no have to be an invincible barrier of unimaginable proportions. As we are reminded, in what should be an embarrassing admission by our Betters, over 40% of illegal immigration is a result of visa overstays that enter by other ports.

The key is that enforcement is attended to and a commitment kept. No, a border wall is not an end in and of itself.

The empty promises of greater enforcement overall are barren and corrosive to any party or administration that claims to be protecting the US.

It's time for at least one party to stop lying.

And to the point, it's obtuse to think we couldn't come up with a barrier that would put second-thoughts to casual border-crosser's mind.

373 That 40% of illegals are visa overstays, I think, is a number with almost not credibility or value whatever.

Neither the denominator nor numerator of that ratio are known. And both are always changing.

A serious border barrier would be 1) historically speaking very easy to create 2) highly effective 3) a concrete (heh) expression of will to enforce admission laws 4) a key element in an overall enforcement strategy 5) due to #3, a framework-changing factor for the mostly rational calculation that goes into most illegals' decisions to come or stay.

If a border barrier is not created, quickly, then all the rest is chin music. Lawlessness is a choice, a choice made by both parties, for years. A barrier doesn't guarantee return to rule of law under all circumstances - but it mitigates the damage of any slippage in that regard.

And any decision to *not* create such a barrier does, effectively, guarantee that any enforcement gainzzz are ephemeral, by signalling that (as it still seems) the country is not serious about serious things.

By the reading of the law, it's impossible for her to leash the dog anywhere behind her unit without violating at least one of the stated rules. There's simply no space. If she makes the leash short enough so the dog can't get into the driveway (or get wrapped around the posts supporting the open air garage), then it would be way too short to meet the length requirements.

It's a setter mix of some type, so around 30 to 40 pounds I'd say.

Well, that's what you get for trusting Apple. I have no intention of getting iTunes, but even if I did, I doubt iTunes would find much to steal in my hard drive, because my recordings are titled and archived by program host and date, not song title. So iTunes doesn't have anything to swap in. But, anyway, moot because, never iTunes.

402 307 SO, a question for the Horde.

Whether or not her treatment of her pet violates the law is not the HOA's business. The HOA's business is whether any HOA rules are being violated. If there are rules that are being violated, bring that to the attention of the HOA.

As far as violations of the law, that is the business of the appropriate law enforcement agency. Call them if you want the law enforced.

Actually, you might be doing her a favor by going the law enforcement route. If the animal isn't being abused in a deliberate kind of way, chances are the sheriffs or animal control or whoever is just going to talk to her and give her a warning. If she doesn't piss them off and is willing to do what they say to correct the situation, that would probably be the end of it. But, if she is a renter, and her landlord gets some kind of notice from the HOA, it might turn out to be a bigger hassle. Depending on how understanding the landlord is. They usually don't appreciate hassles from the HOA.

445 Splunge, like concrete girl said, limoncello's another option. And just as easy as salted/preserved lemons.

BTW, ignore any preserved lemon recipes that call for heating or cooking of any sort. Not needed.

Wash lemons
Cut off the top (where the little stem is)
Cross-cut down, 2/3 of the way
Put a bunch of kosher salt in while prying the quarters open
Stack tightly, vertical with cut tops up, in a large jar (best, one with a lever closure)
Cover with juice squeezed from other lemons, until just covered
Leave on deck of kitchen for a week or so, then refrigerate

457 According to historian James Hornfischer, Adm Spruance and Gen Marshall both favored use of chemical weapons against Iwo Jima, but this was ruled out by higher authority. He mentions it more or less in passing, doesn't make a big deal out of it.

Interesting. Chemical weapons are rarely very appropriate for a situation, or offer any advantage, but in the case of Iwo, definitely.

Why was it considered necessary to occupy all those islands? If they were successfully blockaded, you could simply go around them, and deny the enemy the use of the troops trapped there. Or just stand off and shell the island to gravel with the 16" guns of a battleship.

490 Yes Alex those would have been common reactions to the idea of chem weapons. But the Pacific, and Iwo, were very different from Europe.

Such weapons are not easy to use effectively, especially when static warfare is not the norm. Iwo presented one of the best possible scenarios for use - and even there, efficacy would have been only partial. Might have even been unique in that respect, for major WWII engagements.

But Japan probably had limited ability to make much use of such weapons against us, and was already an utterly lawless and barbaric actor, thus losing its ability to deter.

Recall that by Feb. 1945 Japan could barely resupply any point in its extended empire, thanks to the submarine war. Their ability to react/adjust to almost anything we did was approaching zero (apart from barbarism that might have been unleashed against defenseless POWs and interned civilians, which would have been par for their course).

I don't know what *our* actual chem ability was - it certainly wasn't common throughout the forces. And I don't know what Japan had either.

Use in one theater may very well have justified use elsewhere. It would have been hard to explain why we weren't using them against German resistance, but were against Japanese. Especially to families receiving letters informing them of their loved ones' deaths in Europe.

And a cultural opposition to chemical weapons is going to be hard to overcome, even if the use is justified.

496 Horta, Mike and Alex answered your question. To add one thing, even 16" battleship rounds proved largely ineffective against many types of fortification. Not just at Iwo, where defenses were carved out of rock, but also on other islands where bunkers of coconut logs and sand were found to be quite resistant to even the largest ordnance.

I believe the horrendous Marine KIA at Iwo were matched, almost to the last digit, by the count of B-29 crewmen presumably saved through use of Iwo as a recovery field (it was roughly halfway from the Marianas to targets in Japan).

But some island campaigns are still second-guessed, particularly Peleliu, but even the second-guessing takes place within the framework Mike and Alex laid out - airfields, logistics, airfields, and more logistics.

502 Alex I don't think use just at Iwo would have posed any problems in explanation - the truth would have sufficed: distinctive tactical considerations made chem weapons a good option, whereas these considerations simply did not apply in Europe (which was true).

But it was the overall aversion, fear of retaliation (in Europe, but not in the Pacific) and the fact that they were generally not that useful, that surely explained why Spruance and Marshall did not prevail (and they didn't push it very hard, apparently).

517 341 The border barrier location, and nature, are a fairly straightforward exercise of common sense to the varying terrain and circumstances (lines of sight, terrain channeling).
.....

True, and anything can be done with enough money, but it's more complicated in TX, where the middle of the Rio Grande is the border. Some in TX is already built. By treaty the fence can't be built in the floodplain, so it's well north of the actual border and has to run through mostly private land. It would wash away if it were built in the river anyway. So there are condemnations that have to be done, and some landowners take them to court.

Also, all government maintained roads have to stay open, so there is gap at each road. People have to be able to get to their homes and farms, jobs, college classes, etc. on the other side of the fence.

Not saying it can't be done, but I'm saying that's why even though TX has half the border with Mexico, it has the fewest miles of border fence so far There are reasons for that. TX RGV is the busiest sector for apprehensions now too.

I was down looking at some sections of the completed fence near Brownsville last fall. It's formidable, but then there are open gaps. At least it funnels our visitors towards the gaps where there's a bit more control of the situation.

Yes, as I said in my comment, yes anything can be done with enough money.
The existing gaps cannot be policed with current manpower, and this is just for the 115 miles of fencing that are already built. Sure hire more people but there will be hundreds of gaps in the completed 1200 miles, which also includes two reservoirs. On farms and ranches they can put in gates and give the owner the key, but a farm caretaker I knew refused to be locked into the wrong side of the fence, with a key, and with cartels moving through. He still works there, but he moved into town on the north side of the fence.

He did also say the fence keeps the local town kids from getting in there and leaving beer cans around.

As is as I said, anything can done, but there are reasons the state with the busiest sector and by far the most miles has less fencing than the other states. That reason is the river and everything that pertains to it.

592 Uncle Palp, that Su might be a challenging opponent to an updated F-15, and a fearsome adversary to an F-16.

But I do believe that the F-22 would end up with a few Su's painted under the cockpit edge.

No matter how nimble the Su is, it's not going to win against an opponent that it's sensors don't know is there, from beyond visual range.

That takes nothing away from it's prowess as one hell of an aerodynamic accomplishment. Truly, there are very few planes in the world that could give it a fight.

Because a family of Hispanic women came in while I was waiting for my car to get serviced today, and Grandma, Daughter and Daughter (but not 2-year-old Granddaughter, thank goodness) all had huge chests and butts while having smaller waists, and this was the only explanation that I could come up with.

622 Asheville Robert -

Full disclosure - I work with a local pet rescue, but do not head up any particular section, which is good. Because I do not possess in any way, shape or form the composure to deal with people who treat their animals poorly.

Kudos to you for attempting to go through the system. I've come to the conclusion that every city/county animal officers do what they can, but to varying degrees of success.

I came upon this scenario once (and this was before I started rescue work) A school cafeteria worker could hear a cat crying in a garage across from the school. Since I was known as the 'crazy cat lady', she came and got me. We took food and water across the street at lunchtime. No one was home and the garage door was a pull-up wooden one. We opened it and out came a dirty white cat who literally inhaled the food.
The garage had a dirt floor, no water anywhere, and about 10 cat food tins licked completely clean. Neighbor had called owners on it, but they said it was their cat and they weren't going to do anything different-they had a dog in the house and didn't want the cat inside.

I was all set to go 'visit' these folks, but then I realized that the cat would not survive for much longer whilst owners played whatever game they were playing. So, that night, 'somebody' came walking through the neighborhood, heard the cat crying, opened the unsecured garage door and took the cat. That person even left the garage door slightly open. It was sort of a November miracle. Not unlike the many guns lost to the Horde through various water slippages and home burglaries.

I should feel guilty, but I absolutely do not. Yes, I did check in with the neighbor to see if she was getting harassed. She had heard nothing.

I took the cat to my vet the next day. Got a phone call an hour later saying that the cat was now stable and going to be fine. But the vet said that the cat was so dehydrated and starved that with no attention the cat would have gone into total organ failure within 24-36 hours. We found the kitty a great home.

But if your neighbors already know you have thrown attention on them, it gets dicey. You do what is comfortable. Pictures are a good idea. If you could get food to the animal without detection and see how the dog responds to it, you might have a clue. Yes, big dogs will eat lots, but you'll know the difference between a dog simply eating more and a dog eating because they're being starved.

And as a rescue volunteer, THANK YOU for taking the time to care and making inquiries.

I was away from the computer, tinkering.

CO is just a tetch lighter than air, but not so much it wouldn't readily mix. Even if the CO was not sufficient, unburned hydrocarbons, soot, and lack of O2 in the exhaust would soon render the tunnels uninhabitable.

Add some chemical smoke. That might disclose hidden portals or air vents, too.

No workee -oft times there were water traps built into the tunnels to keep out gas. Sort of like the water in your toilet to keep out sewer gas. Easy enough to swim thru or duck under though.

I thought it was too long; it spent over a half-hour showing us the various victims doing their thing prior to the bombing. Almost zero about the motivation of the bombers. Of course, we had to have the obligatory warning about "Muslim backlash (tm)." Once the movie got into the battle with the bombers, that was pretty good except for the fact that the improvised devices they were using wouldn't fling cop cars around in real life.

My verdict is meh. Mrs Cop liked it.

Dietrich and her legs:

I'd have to go digging into my library for the exact quote, but once, when her daughter was complaining about fellatio, Marlene was mystified until her daughter - rather shamefacedly - got very explicit in her description.

"Oh, that?" Dietrich responded, "Well why not, darling? It only takes a moment and they're so grateful afterwards!"

The governor of PA is a Dem. If Barky takes it into his head to pardon Mumia, do you actually think he'd have the stones to say "no?" He'd probably cower under his desk and hope Philly didn't burn to the ground.

"You can't do that" has never stopped him before, because no-one has stood up to him before. I doubt a loyal Dem apparatchik would, either.

That's an excellent question. I don't know. Let's see if the web (yes, I know) has an answer:

**checks**

This article from the 2009 LA Times seems to address the problem. It appears that, in the 1970s and 80s, the old connotation of "actress" with "prostitute" was annoying English actresses, who began to fight for a (Lord help us) "gender-neutral" term:

_______________

I don't know that much about Wolf, but I doubt a pardon of Mumia would be popular with many of Pennsylvania's voters (outside of Philly). The guy stood over an injured and helpless cop and executed him with a shot to the face.

While a pardon might make Wolf more popular in Philly, it probably wouldn't do much for him in other parts of the state.
