All Good Things Must Come To An End

If it wasn't pay for play, why is the Clinton Slush Fund & Massage Parlor Global Initiative is closing its doors for good?

A huge part of Americana soon to be gone. The Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus to close.

Speaking of things that must come to an end. The last week of the Obama Reign of Terror Administration. Adios you Jug Ear F*cker.

12 560 Correct, though, Hillary, I don't think you have any standing on this issue any longer!!

Live by the Sock, Die by the Sock. You know how it is.

So ... if you're going concealed carry hand-gun, seems to me you've got to answer three questions ...

1) How will you carry (purse, pocket, inside waistband)
2) What caliber do you fancy (.22, .25, .38, 9mm, bigger)
3) Revolver or Semi-Auto

Put any thought into any of this ?

Definitely will not carry. Don't know anything about caliber or type.

22 Well, now, it is quite puzzling that the Clinton Domestic Slush Fund (aka Foundation) remains but the Clinton Global Slush Fund (aka Initiative) is disbanding.

It's almost as if they think they won't be getting enough foreign donations to offset expenses.
But, golly, why would they suddenly fear that heads of state would stop donating?!?

41 There used to be many traveling circuses, and Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus was the last one standing. The animal rights people were a factor in its demise, but not the only one.

I remember my parents taking me to a circus when I was about 6. I've never been to one since then. Today there are many more entertainment options available than there were when circuses first became popular in the 19th century.

44 I was stuck in a bar late one night in midtown Manhattan, when the circus came into town and the streets were blocked off for their passage to Madison Sq. Garden. For some reason, they walked the elephants along through the streets and it took some time up to move them along.

When the show was finally over the streets were loaded up with fresh elephant dung, and a couple of circus people came following along with shovels and a truck cleaning up after the elephants. It was a very memorable Fellini-esque NYC moment.

Right now the dem propaganda wing (aka MFM) is going nuts over Trump saying GA's 5th congressional district is crime ridden and falling apart.
Watching them spin is kind of funny because you can see how they are parsing their words or lying by omission in order to attack what Trump said.

For an industry that's all about showmanship, that seems tame. Elephants hanging in slings under Chinook copters, now that would be an entrance.

55 The Powerline guys talked about the Clinton foundation closing its doors and even went on to agree with the Post's assertion the foundation would have closed one way or another, because Hillary would have had to shut it down if she became president.

Honestly, people like the Powerline guys seem to suffer from permanent Gell-Mann effect when it comes to our political class and Hillary in particular.

For some reason, I guess Powerline thinks Hillary would have gone from being a murderous grifter to an upstanding citizen upon ascension to her throne, I mean the presidency.

65 Just turned the radio on for white noise while cutting up a chicken and there was some NPR word-play quizz show on. Immediately following a breathless intro to a piece about "Targeting Journalism" in the Age of Trumpism. They started with a brief recording of Trump telling Buzzfeed that they are garbages and telling them that there would be "consequences" (which of course means brownshirts will be smashing Buzzfeed's windows and writing "Juden" on the door).
Then, some IYI millenial with perfect, NPR beta-male intonation is quoted as saying: "All politicians lie... but in the age of Trump, the concept of truth itself is becoming impossible."

Quick news break on how "Despite claims that deportations will focus on the serious criminals, there are reports of non-criminal undocumented people being caught up in deportations." They then interview a fellow named "Jose." No other introduction, just "Jose." He then explains how "they asked me what my name was, and I said Jose... and the next thing I know I'm in an ICE detention facility."

Yes, they are rounding up everyone named "Jose" now.

For curiosity, love or money I could not listen any longer and had to shut it off. I fear that 50% of the country is irredeemable, to borrow a phrase, and all we can hope for is to influence more of the young by a two-term soft cultural revolution that may swing the majority of the country back into something resembling sanity.

Flying trapeze artists, dancing elephants, clowns, pretty girls standing up riding horses, gymnasts, magicians, guy getting shot out of a canon into a net, a cage filled with lions and tigers, and one guy with a whip making them jump through flaming hoops. Popcorn, cotton candy, salted peanuts. All under an enormous canvas tent.

After that, I wanted to be a lion tamer!

I will never forget when the elephants came by while we were playing. One or two of them let out their urine as they passed by, we all had to raise our feet off the floor to avoid the onrushing torrent, lest our shoes get soaked. I am talking tens of gallons of pungent wee wee.

80 I am not a gun expert, but if buying a handgun to use in home defense, maybe a smaller caliber might be wise? Less chance of over-penetration, and injuring or killing a family member in the next room, or a neighbor in the adjoining apartment? Also less noise, so less risk of permanent hearing loss? After all, you won't have time to put plugs in your ears, or don ear muffs if a real self-defense situation arises.

One round from a .22 might not drop an intruder, but the whole mag probably will.

Should be the richest and most prosperous state in the country (and it is), but increasingly headed toward financial insolvency. Sometime in the next year or two, the Trump Administration will begin pulling the plug on Federal subsidies for a variety of their ills.

Massachusetts. Exhibit B.

Illinois is just cray-cray around Chicagoland, and New York is just hard to figure.

107 .223 is probably about an ideal home defense round, with the only downside being the noise and needing two hands.

Before the over penetration comments start, .223 hits the first piece of drywall and starts yawing and breaking apart, unlike shotgun pellets or pistol rounds, whilst still being a danger-ender.

109 @80--my advice is to buy something you will practice and become proficient with.

As for permanent hearing lose, well, I think losing ones hearing saving a loved one, or yourself is probably a good tradeoff.

One recommendation I've seen: keep a set of electronic ear muffs by your bed. You hear a noise, slap on the muffs, turn up the volume and you can hear a mouse fart in the garage, yet still protect your hearing if you need to shoot.

Another suggestion: Practice, practice, practice. (I shoot IDPA and Steel Challenge with my carry weapons in order to maintain proficiency)

130 I think a lot of the overpenetration issue is a non issue if you think in terms of scenarios.
For example, you generally don't want to be roaming around in a dark house with a loaded firearm chasing noises.
If you loudly announce you have a gun, move everyone you care about into your safe/barricade zone, defend in place and call 911 you generally don't have to worry about over penetration
At that point anyone coming through the door who doesn't announce PD is a fair target and you shouldn't be concerned too much about whats on the other side of the interior walls.

Well, in fairness the pastor said "Even though some of us didn't like the outcome of the election we need to pray for our new leader." and I give the pastor credit who never told anyone who to vote for. I'm sure like many churches there were people there whop voted for Trump but they've never been made out to be villians=nazis, racists, etc

I guess it depends on the church as regards the political talk. My suggestion is to perhaps write to the priest and tell him you feel alienated by what was said since everyone at Mass is a Christian and desires to serve Christ whichever candidate they voted for. As you may know I tell l people that I have been attending the Orthodox Church in America. (Eastern Orthodox Church) when i can( The priests gives homilies but he's never really gotten into the political divide. At one time the churches were one_Eastern and Western but one of the issues they split over is that the OCA didn't believe in having a Pope. My husband who grew up RC said it reminds him very much of Pre vatican II-very solemn and holy, FWIW, but I hear your frustration and I'm sorry.

Every Sunday the OCA in America prays for those in civil authority and for our military. It's part of the liturgy, not something the priest just chooses to do.

Not us. We listened to a sermon about the evils of the incoming Trump administration. I'm really having problems with the Catholic Church right now.
I don't care if they want to be globalists. Just don't need the US to be.
Let the church fund charities, they are good at it. Very tired of the US government doing it.

Yup....a few sermons over the last few months have been about helping the "undocumented visitors" and similar commie crapola. Our Priest has finally toned it down to "go forth and do good blah, blah" after getting and earful or two I believe. When was the last time a sermon was preached for you to go and help someone on your own dime and your own time and stop letting the government or even your church do it for you.

163 NPR. Yeah, what he said. "Mass deportations" - oh, and what about "the emphasis on criminals! eleventy!!". Ignorant moral narcissism being the pathology AND religion of America's clueless educated classes, this is exactly what one expects.

News flash, ignoramuses: deportation is the basis remedy to illegal entry/presence in the country, regardless of other behavior. Has been since before you were born. Has been, and is, in every country on earth that has a functioning govt.

There's a whole elaborate process to effect deportation, with multiple "defenses" to delay or cancel it, via a parallel judicial system established just for such matters.

An issue that nicely illustrates how colorful trash talk against media personalities and organizations, while welcome and helpful, is only part of the answer.

This is exactly the kind of crap and propaganda that most people believe, and will continue to believe, until someone in authority debunks it. Over and over. Until everyone knows the basics.

So smackdown from the Oval is fine. But without other voices correcting and educating, not just throwing elbows, important actions will be tougher to take, and good luck the nanosecond the political winds shift (for whatever reason).

There are times when I think the Big Guy upstairs has a sick sense of humor.

Just got back from HEB, which was a madhouse. I get into the checkout line behind a woman who is VERY pleasing to look at, think 35 yr old Mary Lou Retton with ginormous boobs. She loads up $300 of groceries and just when the cashier finishes ringing it up she cries out "Oh. I left my wallet in the car. I'll be right back." And she runs out, leaving me and the other 6 people in line hanging. Thanks, lady.

Luckily, she must do some serious cardio. Because she's back in about 90 seconds. Just in time to start pulling out coupons...... Arrrrrrgggghhhhh.

Posted by: IllTemperedCur at January 15, 2017 03:48 PM (LuZz8)

168 80 I am not a gun expert, but if buying a handgun to use in home defense, maybe a smaller caliber might be wise? Less chance of over-penetration, and injuring or killing a family member in the next room, or a neighbor in the adjoining apartment? Also less noise, so less risk of permanent hearing loss? After all, you won't have time to put plugs in your ears, or don ear muffs if a real self-defense situation arises.

One round from a .22 might not drop an intruder, but the whole mag probably will.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 15, 2017 03:22 PM (bG+ug)

If overpenetration is a concern you can use hollow points or frangible rounds to reduce the risk.

We should always be praying for our elected officials and our military. And priests should not be pontificating about politicians. The most our priests ever say is "vote like you're Catholic." Every person there knows what that means (whether they vote that way or not, but I suspect the vast majority vote Republican).

I'm of two minds on this issue. I'm not supporter of PETA, I think they are whack jobs. But on the other hand I'm not a huge fan of zoos.

I've been fortunate enough to go on a couple picture taking safaris in Africa and animals act differently in captivity. I don't think you can have animals that are used to roaming vast areas and lock them is relatively small areas and not expect that they will act differently.

On the other hand, I know that the vast majority of people will never get to see many of these animals in the flesh without zoos. Tough issue.

197 Selling off the priceless art, etc in the Vatican would "help the poor" for maybe a few weeks until the money ran out, and the stuff would probably end up in the hands of some private collector who would lock it up where no one, rich or poor, could see it or enjoy it. No one in the Vatican gets personally rich from "owning" the Sistine Chapel, which is open to the public so everyone can be inspired by it. I get the disgruntlement with the left leanings of the Catholic clergy of late, but selling off the "treasures of the Vatican" is no solution.

In doing the Lord's Prayer they end it with "Deliver us from the evil one" not "deliver us from evil" I have never been a church that said that. Then the election reared it's ugly head. Not the first time I have wanted to walk out and not come back.

The Left is gunning for Paul Ryan over PP funding - pretty sure Ryan has said he will or is considering a cut to the funding.

228 Does anyone know of a good inexpensive substitute for Post It notes?

I use them up pretty quickly, and my official stock has run low. I got some from the Dollar Store... big mistake.

Know looking for off brand Post It notes is lame, but its something I use a lot then throw out, so I don't necessarily want to spend $6- $8 for them.

230 Hopefully this will be better than the Brady tongue bath we were treated to last night. Sheesh, enough already. He's not Jesus.

I live in New England but can't stand the Patriots. It gets old, the one-sided bromances with Brady and certain announcers. Phil's the worst--loves him some Brady for sure.

Watching Brady's tantrums was fun.

There is sound logic to what you say. Divisions in this country are many but are also reinforcing.
We are split economically, racially, spiritually, geographically, politically and the list goes on. Further, we tend to believe these divides are real whether they are or not.
In many ways like America in 1859.
On the upside we move along Pretty much on initeria.

Those are some amazing people...

237 223 Zoos also provide excellent animal education, particularly kids. How many kids would be interested or learn anything about animals like hippos, pandas, polar bears and lemurs, etc, if they didn't get to see them close-up at the zoo?
The Denver zoo has been building out bigger pens for the animal so that they have space to roam as well as provide the ability for visitors to see them in different ways, such as the Elephant Passage that includes multiple areas to roam linked by overhead bridges (for the elephants!).

--Just a few years ago, Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Zoo opened a new Journey to Churchill exhibit. http://www.assiniboineparkzoo.ca/zoo/home/explore/exhibits/journey-to-churchill

The zoo had polar bears before, but this new space allowed visitors to get closer than ever before. When I went there in 2014 there were 4 polar bears there, only one of which, Hudson, was born in captivity. He was fearlessly indifferent to humans, while the other three were shy. My little boy, who adores all bears but especially polar bears, walked right up to the glass (which was bordering an open doorway only closed by mesh, but guarded by an attendant) and was tranwsfixed by Hudson, who was chomping on a giant chew toy and hamming it up. A good time was had by all.

CSPAN had an author on yesterday discussing his book Einstein's Biggest Mistake which, apparently, is about Einstein having such poor social skills that he alienated many people. It sounded interesting so I DVDed it. I started to watch and noticed it was recorded on 11/1/16. He began speaking of the vastness of space, it's just empty, like Trump's brain. I deleted the program and thought that in ten days he'll be curled up in the fetal position mumbling, "Make it stop. Make it stop."

I truly believe that the Roman Catholic Church needs to start selling off the magnificent items in the Vatican to help the poor. Everyone at the Vatican needs to start living that vow of poverty.
Posted by: never enough caffeine at January 15, 2017 03:33 PM (wV8s/)

To whom will they sell it? And how will its value be appraised, especially items that were donated by various people over the centuries with no particular price affixed? Will it be like an estate sale in which the famous pieces are bought first and then in the last few days, the tapestries sell for pennies per yard and filll-a-box for two euros?

Seriously, I was at the Detroit Institute of Arts for an exhibition of angel-related art and one of the topics of discussion was how much time and effort were put into preserving the collection and making it available to the world. The total budget was less than my local school district, probably because those nuns and monks aren't on salary.

If the art were sold, I've no doubt a lot of it would disappear from view. Or as a particularly nasty classmate said when the topic of religious art and literature came up, "I'd love to have a party with a big bonfire." At the very least, it would be like the religious art of France: the art was removed from its religious settings and made harmless by mixing it among secular.

(There was a fancy reliquary I thought would make a fine vase. I'd just need to pry it open and throw out the martyr's liver.)

261 Hope I'm not too late. Fenelon, you refer to the OCA, but it might be helpful to others to note that the Orthodox Church is divided into jurisdictions but united in Liturgy and doctrine. My home parish is OCA, but I would be able to take Communion at a Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Serbian Orthodox, etc parish. Since we are so thin on the ground in the US, there is a lot of crossover and many of us go to church where we can. The OCA is actually a child of the Russian Orthodox Church, and while self-governing, some aspects of its status are still under debate. But that's all jurisdictional, not theological. Roman Catholics who are unhappy with the modern RC church may find themselves back at home in Orthodoxy. In my parish, I'd say half the members are former RC/Episcopalian and half are former Baptists/Methodists, with a few "cradle" Orthodox. I'm glad to know you're still attending Liturgy and that it's meaningful for you and your husband.

263 I'm sad that the circus is closing. The bastards at PETA put a stake through its heart with their attacks on the elephants. Those people could fuck up a wet dream.

BUT the CLYDE BEATTY CIRCUS under the Big Top is still touring! if you want an authentic, turn of the century circus, they're the ones to see. Under that tent, a three-ring circus is practically in your lap. Really a cool experience, and great for the kids.
