Michael Wolff: Trump Has Upset the Establishment By Letting Them Know Their Station and Status are Not Secure

Really good piece.

The ongoing expressions of shock on the part of the cultural establishment--expressed on a daily basis by The New Yorker, New York magazine and The New York Times, anything, apparently, with New York in its title--reflect their fears that the development of a more careful, regulated and corrected world is about to be undone. That the unapologetic white male has returned. You could hardly find a more threatening and throwback version of that than Trump--a rich, voluble, egomaniacal, middle-aged pussy hound...

The culture norm is as starkly confronted as the political norm with proof that it's not speaking to the lives of a sizeable part of the nation: that same pussy talk that shocked cosmopolitans turns out not to be of much concern, and even to express a casual day-to-day reality, for many Americans....

INSTINCTIVELY OR BY CANNY PLAN, Trump converted the conservatives' parochial and rate-limiting culture war on abortion and gay marriage into a much more visceral campaign against the political pieties of sophisticated America, with Trump as the ultimate revenge on upper-middlebrow cultural life. It's the mannered and effete against the profane and immediate....

This attack on careful, orderly, prescribed culture is what happens when the culture stops talking about real things--at least what a significant part of the country regards as real and important. Or, it is--and certainly is inevitably thought to be by those cultural standard bearers under attack--a sinister onslaught against enlightenment itself....

Indeed, the election reengages a gender battle that many people on the New York side of the Trump gap had thought was mightily going in only one direction. The vestigial and primitive American man, unreconstructed, baying at the moon (probably high on opiates)--the alt-right in the liberal view--voiceless for many years (or, anyway, wise to shut up), now had Donald "Let me be your voice" Trump. The obvious message of his sudden resurgence of course is that he didn’t go away or reform: He was just shut out. Without any place in upper-middlebrow culture, except as an occasional enemy of reason or subject of scandal, there was no bridge to who he was--no humanity left for him.

Very good piece. He has some suggestions for media-types who would like to actually get to know what is happening in America -- but I doubt he'll find any takers.

This.

The left ran out of things that matter to mess up, so they moved on to their parochial and rate-limiting issues, and they got thumped.

It turns out that there a lot of Americans who care more about their take-home pay and the safety of their neighborhoods than where trannies get to pee.

30 The self-proclaimed elites will never admit that Hillary was DESPISED by half the country, and that two factors drove voters to Trump:

1. Our country was on the brink of socialism designed to subjugate and obliterate the silent majority.

2. The "Deplorables/irredeemables" charges against this beleaguered cohort.

We had no choice but to vote Trump.

42 Just finished reading another really good Trump piece at a site I don't frequent much anymore: NRO. But, VDH is almost always a good read, and Vox Day, of all people, linked to it, so there I was.

What Exactly Is Trumpism?
Note the common denominator to the all these hostile groups: It is Trump the man, not Trump the avatar of some political movement that they detest. After all, there are no Trump political philosophers. There is no slate of down-ballot Trump ideologues. If Trump were to start a third party, what would be its chief tenets? There is as yet neither a Trump "Contract for America" nor a Trump "First Principles" manifesto.

Nonetheless, from the 2016 campaign and from President-elect Trump's slated appointments, past interviews, and tweets, we can see a coherent worldview emerging, something different from both orthodox conservativism and liberalism, though certainly Trumpism is far closer to the former than to the latter. Here may be a few outlines of Trumpist thought.

43 "the conservatives' parochial and rate-limiting culture war on abortion and gay marriage"

Hmmm. Yeah we're dealing in broad brush strokes here, but parochial? Not sure what "rate-limiting" is supposed to connote here - politically hobbling?

In both "campaigns" of the culture "war" he mentions, the "conservatives" neither initiated the action, nor were ever out-voted on their preferences.

Golly gee, there's even a few serious people out there who never in their voting lives voted based on either issue, but understood the constitution, common sense, and language well enough to be outraged and frightened by the lawlessness and authoritarianism involved in imposing unpopular changes on society, via a constitutionally-rogue judiciary.

I'll stop. But yet again, here we have a discussion that's almost mooted or rendered off-course from the outset, by a false framework, and an elaborate edifice of universally/lazily accepted non-facts.

I won't give that piece of shit my click. Democrats over and over again force the issues of abortion and gay marriage into the news with the ONLY purpose to be to make Conservatives appear as if it was THEY who are fighting it. So his entire premise is a crock of shit unworthy of my analysis. Y'all can disagree and I expect it but you legitimize his BS when you do.

84 These people are not necessarily crazy or stupid, just ill-informed and we have the MFM to thank for that. If you watch CNN and NPT your brain is filled with a kind of effluent that should cause the EPA to have multiple messes of kittens.

Case in point: I work with a nice couple who are good friends. They have six college degrees between them, including three master's and a doctorate, some in STEM fields. They are political ignoramuses. Just how politically ignorant they are is demonstrated by the following anecdote from about three years ago. I mentioned the full name of our present CinC, including the "Hussain" that is his middle name. My friend (masters in Botany and Engineering) jumped all over me, saying "Don't spread those lies ... that was made up by the Republicans and Rush Limbaugh." I emailed him a link to whitehouse.gov, which gives the Obamanation's name in full and never heard anything more about that.

However, I do NOT and cannot discuss politics with these otherwise very smart and nice friends because when it comes to all that, they are first class dumb shits. Not bad people, no, but with a big black hole of stupid where their otherwise fully functional brains are located. They voted for Obama and they voted for Her Thighness and they do not have the least clue about just how stupid that was.

Ryan, McCain, Graham, Rubio and McConnell are going to be a problem.

Ryan in the House and Grahnm in the Senate are going to introduce a bill to shield all of Obamas dreamers from deportation.

Rubio is going to try to block Tillerson

McCain is going to be McCain and McConnell is going to be his usual treacherous self.

88 I think that the major reason Trump won is his in your face attitude. Something happened both politically and culturally during the Bush years that ticks me off even today. It is the assertions made by the "elites" that are NEVER challenged. I don't know when it really started, or why it continues, but it is like watching a slightly less lethal form of invasion of the body snatchers. Heck, when Regan was president and folks were screaming about the "religious right" you always heard not just lefties challenge extreme positions, you heard from folks with similar views who simply said, "Ah, I can't go that far". Now the left is the cultural force and the steady litany of white men suck, everybody is racist, refer to my by my preferred pronoun, and by the way Dad, you can't take your daughter in the men's room (or go into the ladies room with her), but a guy in a dress can go in any time he likes. No, that's my point. They are NOT bad, just ignorant because they have been misled by the media and other influences. They are very nice people and good, reliable friends. This is NOT about going all Viking and starting civil wars between everyone we know. Let's let them watch what happens under Trump and maybe, just maybe they will start to come around. Just today I dropped a mention when they found that a contractor was too busy to come running that ever since the election the builders are busy and the public's optimism has soared. No comment, but no denial. The truth is powerful, but it takes time to be heard. As someone (Twain?) once said, a lie will go around the world before the truth gets its boots on. Give it time.

Posted by: Ruthless at January 13, 2017 07:43 PM (ro5Th)

But these long threads are hard to digest and still comment in a timely manner, so I certainly don't expect you to have seen all this.

Ruthless, many of us are surrounded by otherwise smart and perfectly nice people who ..... are dangerous idiots when it comes to the votes and "opinions" (which are little more than regurgitated NPR memes and myths with zero personal understanding or certainly direct knowledge or experience applied).

There are many kinds of smart - and, therefore, many kinds of dumb. And the idiot marinade - the soup of myth, distortion, and worse that most people soak in (pop culture, media, education) - has soaked deeply into many people who in their personal or professional spheres of competence would never proceed on such ignorance.

It's the greatest inertial obstacle we face, and the main source of my continuing guarded pessimism.

189 Mortimer, many answers to your question.

One of which involves maneuver, as opposed to brute force.

Mass illegal migration (and oh I wish someone would convince Trump to make that one word change), for example.

"Ryan moves to protect 'Dreamers', blah blah blah".

Ignore. Enforce existing law, with a sensible tactical touch, and the "Dreamer" issue can be left to languish for a while. It's a relatively small matter in the larger picture.

Judicial and appropriations hammer brought to bear on all "sanctuary" lawlessness, at state and municipal level.*

Consultations/warnings to large known systematic users of illegal labor, followed by strict enforcement (raids and deportations).

Re-institution of normal procedures at the border - return to Mexico, detention, no shipment around the US, no "re-unification" of illegal minors with illegal adults.

Border barrier construction on a Manhattan Project basis (fast, budget of "whatever you need")*.

Of these actions, only * require some congressional cooperation, which is likely in both cases. Taken together, the change in the pool temperature will produce results that will make your head spin, guaranteed.

I make a point of "othering" them, to use their term. I contrast "loyal Americans" with "liberals," and offhandedly insult their intelligence (i.e., in comments not directed to them, but to third parties, as though this was generally recognized fact). I laugh at some of their positions, and implicitly characterize them as antediluvian ("Great point. Which reminds me, where did I put my bellbottoms?")

Liberals are exquisitely sensitive to such social disapprobation, and it's great fun to make up such slights.

Frankly, that's too obvious. Instead, force her to address and resolve the myriad contradictions in leftist politics.

Use method acting, and adopt the demeanor of an PBS newsreader (i.e., anodyne diction, constipated expression) when confronting her with such contradictions (e.g., that between feminist ideology and Islamic social mores).

I really think that is the kind of stuff we can discuss here and have it work it's way into policy.

If I were a strategist I would be mining this site for ideas on how to achieve political goals. I think that the words that get typed here do get the attention of those who matter more often than we know.

As badly as I , like Rush, wanted Obama to fail, I want Trump to succeed. You don't have to love the guy but you have to love his vision of a hardworking, prosperous, self sufficient America.

No, this is not life. Politics is not the whole meaning and purpose of life. If they attack you, you don't have to go all Defcon Five. Change the subject and keep your powder dry, wait to see what happens when we do not have an absolute insane narcissist in the White House. Things are going to change. And, yes, we are going to see a lot of crazy, but only by a small majority of the truly stupid.

Yes, this is life now.

This is life now because this is what the Prog scum have made it. I didn't ask for it, I don't want it, I wish it was different. It isn't. And as we all can see, it isn't going to change with a new sheriff in town.

I didn't ask to play this game. I just wanted to be left alone. The scum won't leave me alone, ever. I have to bake cakes for their fags. I have to fund the murder of unborn children. I have to pay for Muslim terrorists to be imported into this country who will then kill me. I'm done. It ain't happening.

I have to play the hand I'm dealt. The Prog scum have nearly taken over the country. The Prog scum will not rest until I have been beaten into submission. After Trump is gone, they will probably take over for good.

My relatives, friends, associates who support these scum are The Enemy. As a Christian, I am called to resist the Devil and fight evil. Whether you are evil or support evil is irrelevant in the end.

These scum are like Terminators: they can't be reasoned with, negotiated with, talked to, nothing. They are hell bent on destroying people like me.

There may be a few who are still "ignorant," but they are a very few. Most people in 2017 know what they are supporting. That includes your friends, whether you see it or not.

The lines have been drawn in the Civil War: Progressives and Muslims vs. Christians and conservatives. This is war.

War is coming to America. It may not happen in your lifetime, but it's coming. Deny it at your own risk.

264 "Politics is not all of life".

Indubitably true. Well, in principle.

In historical America - where govt. was not all or most of life, where the public sector did not affect or control or intervene in most parts of life - almost completely true.

When for the first time in your life are unable to afford health insurance due to govt. meddling; when you know people who have given health, limb, or life in successful foreign operations whose fruits are then simply tossed away; when for no good reason at all you can't buy a firearm you'd like, or ammunition at an actual market price; when the cost of innumerable things affecting your standard of living are boosted wildly by utterly baseless regulatory interference; when you can't buy an incandescent light bulb, or get a "single use" plastic bag at the grocery store (which you used to use in multiple other ways and for up to several years); when you can't refuse a non-essential service to someone simply based on deep personal belief; when you are expected to support govt. employees in an unsustainably (and obscenely) lavish manner, regardless of tax burden; when you have to waste work time sitting listening to dumb racists lecture you on "diversity" when you've been naturally free of any bigotry for longer than they've been alive; when you have to hope the illegals at the Home Depot parking lot are not particularly drunk or ornery today so they don't almost cause you to be involved in a serious car accident at the entrance .....

Then ....... politics *IS* all of life - or close enough to be intolerable.

284 So somewhat OT, but not entirely...

I logged on FB for the first time since early December to join the group for my community garden association. My feed is FILLED with pro Obama, anti Trump junk (save for a few sane voices). Even a friend, a restaurant owner who normally is only vaguely political on occasion, is saying Trump's speech reminds him of "Animal Farm". A friend, Mark, was a technology advisor to the White House and posted pics of cupcakes with the Presidential seal and a near tearful ode to his good friends and colleagues. Lamentations of 'Oh I will miss his easily read speeches' and all sorts of other cloying shit clogs my feed from almost everyone, and the one guy who posted a Cruz video taking the Dems to task for keeping silent got one pro comment and another guy harassing him.

Our 'team' is going to be in power but I don't FEEL nearly in power. A girlfriend who works at a big software company keeps silent for fear of retribution, (she's a republican), esp. after a memo circulated about how 'women might feel fear after the election' posted by a women's group. I know some of the lamentations and postings are due to reasons the linked article Ace posted listed - the 'resetting', the plebs have a champion - but it seems more fevered than that. Some of these people have never directly been part of the elite order the left establishment have tried to create.

The inauguration is a week away, and I have a feeling the divide and anger are going to get worse.

294 TeeHee. We all need to study some general psychology. For the LIV dem voters; reality vs what they were told is like what that stupid climate propaganda training seminar was saying. They feel like the problem is too big to even comprehend let alone fix. We have to engage their affect and get them into a receptive frame of mind for them to even think about searching out internet news sources that will link i.e. Daily Mail that tell some facts that U.S. media bury.

And I have some sympathy for how hard it is emotionally/mentally for those people because in 2008-2009 I went from thinking "the media is biased to Dems in how they phrase things but I know how to calibrate for this" to realizing the full extent to which they were burying any story negative to a Dem and making shit up to smear conservatives and it rocked my psyche. And that was with knowing the FNM were sympathetic to the Dems. Has to be an even bigger jolt for folks that have been thinking for decades that the media are neutral.

But when you go against your nature, you become unhappy...

Exactly. I started to respond to that in the same way, but somehow clicked something that deleted my comment. They are OUR enemy, but that doesn't mean that everyone is our target. The true targets are the activists, not the ill-informed who don't really pay attention to this stuff. I also donated to Trump, but I learned back in 2008 to keep on the down-low, when I put a McCain (yeah, I know) sign in my yard and got my house sabotaged as a result. I had a similar experience at a Christmas party. The host was an old friend I'd worked with back when and known for decades. I felt instantly out of place among those drinking the wine spritzers and talking about the difficulty of getting good help. Nobody said anything explicitly lefty (a first for lefties, AFAIK) but the atmosphere was unmistakably chi-chi leftist. (And this in a chi-chi leftist part of CA.)

I was surprised, because I thought I knew my friend, with whom I'd shared political views for many years. Then I saw his wife, who was incandescent with pleasure as the doyenne of the festivities, and it hit me: these are her friends.

Turns out she's a flaming lefty. I'd had no idea, any more than I know how he lives under the same roof. But my friend is the guy who (surreptitiously) turned me onto the PBS coverage of election night as a guilty pleasure.

And, yeah, you already figured out why his household was watching PBS's coverage.

Ah, actual Scientology writ. I must respond with something equally well-sourced. So, OK, this from Wikipedia (yeah, I know, but I've read this before from other sources):

In 1966, Hubbard wrote a criticism of the organization's behavior and noted the "correct procedure" for attacking enemies of Scientology:
(1) Spot who is attacking us.
(2) Start investigating them promptly for felonies or worse using own professionals, not outside agencies.
(3) Double curve our reply by saying we welcome an investigation of them.
(4) Start feeding lurid, blood, sex, crime actual evidence on the attackers to the press.

That's where I got the blood thing from.

I feel pretty comfortable with the people at church too. Politics are rarely discussed openly, but there were a lot of thumbs-up and big smiles after the election. And there was that guy in Bible class last week, when we were discussing a bad king in the Old Testament. Guy said he must have been a Democrat. Everybody laughed.

So my world is relatively sane.

I said we were on the road to civil war when Obama was elected in 2008, for the simple reason that you can't have half of the population trying to ram Communism down the other half's throats without bloodshed.

Now, in 2016, the Left is freaking out because they were *this close* to taking absolute and permanent power, with all that entails.

Would your friends be open to listening to some of Jon Haidt's Moral Foundations theory work . . . maybe his TED talks?

The only way to change someone's worldview (which is what we're talking about here) is to make it too uncomfortable for them to maintain it. That's sad, but it's human nature.

Of course, there are many variations of "uncomfortable." Being confronted with the fact that "liberals" have a much more shallow and limited view of human ethical behavior than "conservatives" do would, I think, be deeply uncomfortable for them, in a healthy way.

Social media helps them communicate and fight almost like paramilitary groups. They can spring up anywhere.

408 for me, the black swan in the whole upcoming civil upheaval thing is technology. we are on the cusp of radical change in every area of our lives, from jobs and careers to education to driving to finance to insurance to housing to everything, and interpersonal relationships will likewise be affected.

the styles of war that each affiliated group engages in will either thrive or be outmoded.

Perhaps that is why they try to incite others. Dallas lost 5 officers thanks to such incitement.

415 Do you want to be in the spot where they demonstrate? Riot? Get violent? These things get ugly in a hurry.

Social media helps them communicate and fight almost like paramilitary groups. They can spring up anywhere.

The "oh shit" moment for me was the pool party incident in McKinney north of Dallas. They "gathered" on twitter and coordinated their efforts. All kinds of urban, Oak Cliff scum went up there and wreaked havoc, and nobody knew until it was happening. In one of the nicest 'burbs in DFW.

If it can happen there, it can happen anywhere, at any time. That was it for me. I'm getting out of the city.

For conservative students, going back to college has become a traumatic experience. Psychologically going behind enemy lines and knowing that if given the chance, these unhinged lefties would kill them. I am not exaggerating.

Follow what is happening now at Berkeley. Milos is scheduled to speak there. It is absolute war by the administration, some professors, and Berkeley lefty groups against the Berkeley Republican Club. Private information has been made public to terrorize and intimidate. I do worry for the conservative students and Milos safety.

Well, not to get all Aristotelian, but work and wealth are necessary in order to secure the means - instruments, equipment, etc. - to a life allowing contemplation (philosophy and science) and/or proper action (ethical and political excellence). But means are understood with a view to their ends - we need far less for the good life than we think.

Not really a lot. I would bet money a few morons here have that many pistols alone. I knew a few guys that were in the triple digits on firearms, and no they were not gun dealers.
Right now I have an almost 50-50 balance of handguns and rifles. Lead a balanced life folks.

571 For those of you new shooters looking to get firearms, a bit of advice.

Try to find a range that both gives basic firearm familiarization and rents different handguns to try. Handguns are better than they used to be but to accurately shoot and handle one, it needs to fit your hand in a specific way. A handgun that does not fit your hands results in problems in accuracy and control or in basic operation of the handgun.

Next, figure out do you want an all purpose home and carry outside of the home firearm? Do you want a different firearm for carry versus home?

Third, stick to a boring reputable brand--Glocks, Smith and Wessons, Rugers, Sig Sauer, Springfield XD's, all produce reasonably priced firearms with decent warranties. Many of these can be acquired in great shape second hand but take someone experienced if you do this or do your homework first.

Beware of the mall ninja, either behind the gun store counter, or online who may recommend expensive, inappropriate, or downright ineffective firearms for your purposes.

I would suggest reading some books by a few of the following trainers--Massad Ayoob, Gun Digest Guide's to Combat Handgunnery, 6th edition among others of his, and John Farnam's books on handguns and longarms. Paxton Quigley has some useful books for women, specifically. If you like revolvers, then check out Grant Cunningham. Gun Digest, in particular, has a large number of instructional books on firearms that are reasonably priced.

Last, realistically determine how much training that you are willing to do and your physical abilities. For most, longarms such as rifles and shotguns are easier for beginners to shoot accurately and operate. Usually, they are also more lethal than many handguns. Handguns though are portable as carrying longarms concealed is impractical.

Guns are no magic talismans to ward off evil, they require a certain amount of training to optimize your chances and to prevent self-injury. Range time on a regular basis is necessary and training by qualified instructors at the beginning can prevent bad habits from forming. Don't leave out learning about the gun laws in your state and locality, particularly those on self defense.

There are a lot of forums around that cater to shooters and almost all are willing to lend a hand to answer questions from new shooters. My personal favorite is The High Road because civility is a big issue there but others have their advantages as well.

Good luck.

573 571: i have glock 26/27 and sig 239 (and others) like the 26/27 for carry, but accuracy its the sigs 10s at 25 ft. glocks are in body mass, but no dead on.
if scared out of my mind and under attack, I will go with the sig 239s (9/40)

574 That was a reasonably well written article. Fairly thoughtful for a liberal trying to understand and explain the apocalypse of their limited little world.

Usually, when they seem to get it, there are these 'stray voltage' sentences that ruin it all.

The author seems very close but I suspect he was wearing a straight jacket as he wrote it to keep him from slitting his wrists. Dying to mention LBGT (or whatever the ludicrous acromnym is) and/or scream out RACIST.

Meh. Same jackasses really think that they are among some special elite. They still seem like they are studying the mating patterns of knuckle dragging chimps in between avoiding the feces being thrown by said chimps.

The Trump voters that I know have more education, more degrees, and more professional experience than the same Crooked Hillary loving voters of NY and Mexifornia.

To watch them study us is hilarious.

I think what Mr Wolff has written is quite damning: straight white men
risk all the social progress we have made just because they feel the
need to turn an election into a primal scream therapy session. I cant
imagine that people on the right actually regard an analyses like this
as being flattering.

576 Apt the the New York cultural hegemony is being destroyed by - a New Yorker.

There's a lot that bugs me about the discussions we're seeing now. I'll cite one: there is no one elite class, but several elite classes. And the ones seeing their status challenged are very new. One evidence of this is that for once (I can't think of another offhand) they see entry into the upper classes as immediately available, unlike the norm where what you hoped for was that your grandchildren would get in. (He's useless today, but Brooks's Bobos books are a pretty good look at this new self-designated aristos, partly because even then he was more than half-drunk with love of the new order. Now, of course, he's completely gone under.)

577 They didn't really mind Other-izing us as "bitter clingers" or shoving laws down our throats or bowing to our enemies or shipping our jobs overseas.

It's your turn now. Hit it, Bobby:

Ah, you never turned around to see the frowns
On the jugglers and the clowns when they all did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on a chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discovered that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal

578 >parochial and rate-limiting culture war on abortion and gay marriage

Yeah, because mass-murdering unborn babies and putting sodomy on the marriage altar -- and in the infantry and the Boy Scouts, and liquidating every small business or chapel that won't toe Der Party Line, and gelding medically healthy boys and letting them pee next to your daughter -- is so..... boring. Like, get over it.

Fuck that and fuck them. I'm not getting over anything. If the Stupid Party showed one tenth the moxie denouncing these Orwellian atrocities as Trump does denouncing The Establishment, they'd make headway. The problem isn't the cause. The problem is that they're polite.

579 They already have done far more than stamp their feet and color in the corner. Trump is a Bataan Death March to many of them.
