Meet The PetMorons

cat1.jpg

Our first pet today is Frankie. Per her owner, "She's basically a dog, but better. Because she's a cat."
Tam in AZ
(I've been lurking for years)

Thanks Tam, now we will have the cat/dog war. Why didn't you just say longbows were better while you were at it?

oliver twist.jpg

Our next pet is another cat. Looks like the cat owners got their cameras fired up. Lurker Bill submitted this about his cat: "They say we each get blessed with that ONE pet friend... This is mine, Oliver Twist Brown. First cat I ever paid for and, by God, worth ten times more."

Sharp looking cat Bill.

aida.jpg

"This is Aida, pictured at a lure coursing event. The yellow blanket is so that she can be identified as she makes her way around a twisting half-mile course. It's nice to see a dog doing what it was bred and built to do and obviously enjoying doing it."

Kodos the Executioner

betty.jpg

Meet Betty. Here is her story, "Our little foster kitten, Betty. Her Mama had been mauled by two pit bulls and would not make it through the night, so this little angel and her brother, Kevin, were brought to me to shelter until a good home can be found." Thanks for sharing Stacy.

prinz.jpg

"Daughter sent me this pic and it reminded me of the Vizsla, Prinz, I had back in the day. He was a wonderful dog and remains a treasured memory. We went to the Outer Banks on vacation, and left him at a reputable kennel, we returned to hear tales of his escape prowess. If they hadn't had ten foot chain link fence around the entire kennel site, he probably would have met us at home."

Thanks J & B K

cooper.jpg

Last but not least is Cooper. He appears to be an abused pup. Here is his story according to Grizzledcoastie.

"Sometimes commenter Grizzledcoastie here. My wife & I adopted Cooper from a no-kill shelter as a puppy and he's been with us a little over a year. We loved him from the first time we saw him."

*****

What a very nice group of kids Pets this week. Thank you for sharing their photos and their stories. You folks are the best.

If you have a tip, a story or a pet photo. You can submit those to us here at petmorons at g mail. Have a wonderful week!

2 I've been putting off talking about this but the holidays are over (except for Martin Luther King Day which isn't a holiday holiday) so now is the time. My wonderful dog Magnum died on Christmas morning, just as the grandkids were opening presents. He just gave out a yelp and fell over dead. I had mentioned a few weeks ago that we inherited him when my neighbor died just before Thanksgiving. We had him only a month but loved him and he loved us. We didn't know it, but he had a tumor in his spleen that burst. They had considered surgery but surgery was very risky so they chose to not do it. My daughter's family including her two dogs had gotten in on Christmas eve and Magnum played and played and played and played with her dogs. Maybe he just played too much. I hope that when I go, it will be as quick.

17 LOL at the good boy pics. The dogs are clearly all cheered or relaxed to be called good. The parrot looks like "what you talking bout Willis." and some of the cats are on a mission to prove they are serious predators NOT good boys.

24 So WeaselDog hates the mailman with the heat of a thousand suns and she starts this insane-o barking as soon as she hears his truck on the street. I have started putting her outside at the first peep, thinking she might associate being put outside (sort of a punishment) with barking. So far, I'm not seeing any change in behavior, but she's slightly less annoying out there.

26 This morning and outdoor cat was on my porch. I went out to say hello, and he/she/ xer scampered over to the neighbors porch. Being a giant sucker, I brought out a bowl of cat food. Sure enough, kitty cat came back and ate... some of it.

Which makes me think it was someone's cat.

Also... cat had very unique coloring. Sort of a cream/ginger look, with a black tail.

27 There was some talk about cremation in the morning thread and I left this comment, which is appropriate here as well:

At the printing shop where I work, one of our customers is a pet cemetery. They order two types of tags, "Private" and "Simple".

It was explained to me that a "Simple" cremation is done with several animals, and the ashes are comingled and partitioned out to the pets' owners. A "Private" cremation involves just one particular pet. Obviously, a "Private" cremation is more expensive.

The room always gets a little dusty when I receive an order for those tags.

35 So WeaselDog hates the mailman with the heat of a thousand suns

We had a little door on the porch for mail and our German Short-hair would go absolutely nuts on that poor mailman. She probably wondered who the hell is this asshole throwing a handful of mail in her house every day. I gotta get a dog one of these days.

46 My first Vizsla, now on number six, could climb a chain link fence to get out of the backyard. When we moved, neighbors we didn't know came up and to tell us how they would miss her visits.

She would get the paper and get a biscuit. Quickly we had the entire neighborhood's papers because one paper = one biscuit. Also she would fart, if you know Vizsla you know they are nuclear, and then run out of the room. SO when she ran out you better do the same.

God I miss that dog.

50 A heads up about a current pet hazard for animals in a very small geographic area: Screwworms have returned to Florida, in the keys and on the mainland near Homestead.

It's been decades so probably most people don't remember what a problem they can be, but if you live in that area you need to keep an eye on your pets and livestock. They can be deadly.

My favorite thing about him is his mischievous side. He loves to take something off a counter and lead us on a merry chase. He also enjoys love offerings in the form of his favorite toys into my lap.

They did NOT want him back again. LOL

84 That's awesome dArtist

We had a ball chasing all of those pups in the yard and we got to pick one. The mom was a Champion field trial dog so most of them were really good dogs. We were pretty lucky to be exposed to that level of dogs and trainers at such an early age. I understand the breed is all messed up now from in-breeding and greed.

87 Daughter's mystery mutt was over at the house yesterday and ran afoul of *something* in the yard. Four dogs outside and only the one was hurt. This is the second time that dog, and only that dog, has been injured (this time, about a six-inch vertical slice over her ribs, last time, a deep, deep cut just above her elbow that took months to fully heal) in the yard. We've searched and searched the yard and find absolutely zero evidence of how or where she could have gotten hurt. I feel awful, helpless, frustrated, and more than a little scared. I have an 80-pound lab mix who would have to get himself to the car if something happened, because I'd probably hurt him worse if I tried to pick him up.

Sometimes, I really wish dogs could talk.. even just a little bit.

96 Had a fun one yesterday. Got home from work, let the dog out. Made dinner. Waited, Ajax had not come back to the door to be let in (usually he does his business quick when I get home so he can get excited and get a good petting.) Looked out back, no sign of Ajax. Checked the side gate- standing wide open.

Grabbed my coat and his leash, already worrying where he had run to and if he was ok. Open the front door...

He is sitting there, wagging his tail.

We went to a shelter to adopt a kitten for our older cat Thor. There was a brother/sister pair there, both almost entirely black. They had been rescued from a woodpile somewhere. We decided to adopt the boy. As we were crating him up up, I felt a tap, tap, tap on my shoulder, and looked back into his sisters eyes. (They were in an elevated cage.) We got the male home and I was a wreck. These kittys had been through a lot together and we were breaking them up. A couple of days later we called and picked up the female. Now we have 3 cats. We named the siblings Bonnie and Clyde.
Couldn't be happier.

110 I've mentioned this yesterday, but it fits better in the pet thread with all the cool cats.

Took the cats to the Vet's for their annual shots and check-up. Amazingly only incurred one claw mark while handling three cats. Ra and Isis were also quite vocal in their displeasure while Mama Cat just tried to hide.

All the cats checked out okay and shots were given. Though Isis has managed to pack on 0.7lbs in weight over the past year. So need to watch how much they eat.

As I was leaving one of the assistants wondered where the office's resident cat was. She wanted to pet a fluffy cat. "A fluffy cat?" I said. So opened up the carrier to show her Isis. And as she started to pet Isis she said, "Oh my gawd, her hair is softer than mine."

But then, that is one reason why we pay a six-figure salary to have a dog-handler at the WH. The handler is supposed to be there controlling the doggeh---and the visitors.

I read somewhere that this was not the first incident with this particular dog. All the more reason why contact with strangers or near-strangers should have been avoided or greatly restricted.

Clyde, the male kitty, plays fetch. We crumple up paper (1/2 sheet of 8.5 X 11 is perrfect) and make paper balls. We flick them all around the house, and he charges after them like a cat possessed. He will play soccer with them for a bit, then bring it over and drop it on your foot. He will stare at you until you flick it out into space again.

Can't tell you how many times I've pulled up to park, and found the little twerp waiting for me at the gate. He never went far, never got into trouble, just didn't like to be inside a fence. I think he just liked to show the other horses that he could get out if he wanted to. And when I'd put him back in the pasture, if he knew I was watching to see where he got out, he'd pretend to be asleep. He was never a problem to catch, never caused a fuss, he just didn't like to be inside a fence.

Yes, I lived just down the road from a greyhound race track, and that's where we got our dogs. They closed down a few years back, and about 400 dogs got adopted out. Mine are gone now, and my heart is done breaking, so there will sadly be no more for me. But I enjoy the stories from others here.

If I get another dog it won't be a working dog. I'd like a mellow dog for once.
My queensland knew that if our other dog didn't have a ball in his mouth he would knock her over to get the ball. A piece of ball would suffice for the big dog not to chase the ball when you threw it.
The queensland would hold her ball in her mouth and find another ball for the big dog before she dropped the ball for fetch.

I did a circuit of the basement and the house and finally found him licking his dumb self on the computer chair upstairs.

Not the most exciting story, but when an older cat isn't in his usual place, it kind of freaks you out.

181 Our boxer cross Ole was prone to stinky farts, they did not phase him any so no warning. Boxers are also at some risk of bloat so we gave him Beano twice a day. This does not make farts smell better but it did reduce the volume quite a bit.

182 Kodos the Executioner...Aida is absolutely beautiful!

My father use to breed Doberman Pinschers...we use to take them to the park and let them off the leash. Boy could they run. Beautiful dogs...very well trained and great for security.

Story time...when I was about six years old, an older boy in the neighborhood use to bully (I hate this term) me. One day, I was sitting in the front yard while my dad was working in the garage. Our female Dobie was tethered in the front yard and she was lying next to me. Anyway, this boy decided to bring his two friends with him and proceed to ride their bikes on the sidewalk in front of our yard and stick one leg out, like they were trying to kick me. I told them to stop it and then my dad (6'3 and a solid 220 back then...ex-college linebacker) told them to stop and leave me alone. They stopped for awhile but then started up again. By this time my dad was in the backyard...I told them to stop again. The next time the main agitator came around, I was standing on the edge of our yard. He got off his bike and pushed me down. My dog promptly chomped on his leg and did not let go. Long story short, my dad had to pay his hospital bill (stitches and shot) and he never brought his ass around there again.

Sorry for the long story.
