Thank God It's GAINZZZDay

I have no GAINZZZ these last two weeks according to any measurement. In fact, my Stupid Scale claims I've gained two pounds. And even though I've actually gained some muscle (but not two pounds' worth), it claims my bodyfat % has zoomed up by six percent.

But I look pretty good. I'm not wearing those shirts I used to pick out that were strategically drapey to try to hide my belly.

Here are some things to look at:

A Time article from last March about intermittent fasting.

Jason Fung put out a new book (with Livin' La Vida Low Carb blogger Jimmy Moore) all about Intermittent Fasting this past fall. There's an article about it here. I haven't read it yet.

Pretty awesome video about building your own DIY power rack with about $200 in lumber and a little bit of easy-to-find pipe. And if you dig that, check their other videos to see how to add a pull-up bar to the rack, and dip bars, and a pull-down pulley rig for doing lat pulls and triceps extensions.

I really wanted to do that -- I really want to do that -- but I estimated that the odds I would cut at least one finger off with a saw at better than 60% and figured multiple surgeries would take the price of the thing higher than $200 for me. But if you're handy with tools, your costs might be lower.

And speaking of DIY: I also wanted to hear about any progress on the hobbies you've started recently, or any plans you're making for the near future.

Oh: I wanted to mention this: A commenter (forget who) recommended citrulline to me. I forget the reason offered. I thought it was recommended as a recovery supplement. But I think it's more of a pre-workout supplement-- energy-boosting.

Anyway, it actually does seem to work. I have more energy when I take it than when I don't. So much so I threw some more money away buying a pre-workout stack that contains citrulline (along with a lot of caffeine and yohimbe, whatever that is).

Caffeine obviously gives you energy. But that part makes me jittery.

The citrulline, though: I think that actually does work on its own, without caffeine-like side effects.

I take it Michelle Obama has been told her attempt to force students into eating less and moving more has been scientifically proven to be useless.

I can't do much in the way of exercise and it's so important for me to keep my body moving. I've considered yoga, but even that requires moves this old body can't make anymore.

26 Therapy Hobby:

I am making my cat a small shag rug. Yes, I realize this is insane.

I have this part time job I've hung onto way too long, and I need to leave for physical and emotional reasons. The gig will be ending this coming fall; I may or may not leave before that.

Well, I have dozens of black work t-shirts with the company logo that I don't wear. I'm cutting them into strips, and making a shag rug out of them.

Working with my hands keeps me from snacking, and there is something rewarding about transforming something from my past into something different.

28 No gainzzzz for me really unless you count gainzzzing weight. Hit an all time high of 198 at New Years. (This from about 168 four years ago).

BUT, I have no completed 15 days of a 10 PM to 4 PM IF routine. (I started two days before New Year's in anticipation of a disaster weigh in on New Year's Day). Losrt 2.5 lbs, so its slow, but at least I have bee able to stick with it for 2 weeks. That's new.

29 Increasing the length of my daily fasts (to about 18 hours) has shown to be very good for my overall weight. It is only hard for a few days and then I'm almost grossed out by the idea of eating breakfast.

I don't notice any energy shortage, if anything the opposite.

Just maybe 3 pounds this last week and a half. But slow and steady is my plan.

On the hobby front, working on some game networking stuff but up against some pretty sturdy conceptual walls. Guess that's why it's a hobby. Oddly, it seems much easier for me to accomplish things in my day job (also software development) than when I'm doing it for fun. Probably psychological.

I assume she means the chin-up/pull-up machine at the gym, which has counterweights to give you a boost.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at January 13, 2017 05:36 PM (mbhDw)

36 >>>What does that mean?

i know machines at the gym give you a de-weight boost (by adding mass to a couter weight) and I know that there are rubber straps you can use (hanging them from the pullup bar) to de-weight yourself, but i'm interested in which you're doing, too.

I've been using a step ladder to manually de-weight myself (or podally deweight myself-- putting some weight on feet), but it's not a very good system.

41 I re-evaluated what I was eating beginning in December...decided I needed more fat to offset the lack of carbs. So I focused on eating way more of the good fats - even though I'm a true believer in IF, this took conscious effort on my part - and the results blew me away. After being relatively stagnant the previous 7-8 weeks, in December I lost 5 lbs and thus far in January I'm down 2.5 lbs.

Holy shit, Batman!

46 StallllZ. Three weeks at the same weight. But I'm okay with that. I haven't been able to work out and I have also had to eat a lot of meals in a more regular fashion--I find I can't fast, for example, if I haven't slept, and a lot of sick kids have cut into my sleep. (Just like it cuts into my ability to work out.)

So, if I can drop another 20-30-probably-not-40 but maintain it in this fashion (following up "regular" meals with fasting), I'm hep.

My doctor friend had a brainwave which I might try to patent. To wit, since ipecac makes you puke violently if taken full strength, I assume it can be diluted to a concentration that can only make you not want to eat. Any stronger you feel nauseous and so on until vomitus ensues. Plus, it's already FDA approved at the full strength level.

Hmm.

52 While vacationing in Minsk a few years back, I ran into a pleasant young Russian woman named Svedtlana. Well, by 'Russian' I mean half-Latvian and by 'young' I mean 40 year old divorcee with seriously low self esteem and a flexible payment plan. So anyways, we... wait.

Wait wait wait, this is the GAINZZZ thread. My bad. The story about how I defiled a park bench where JEF and Mooch once shared an ice cream will have to wait.

I have dropped below the 180lbs wall where I frequently stall out. By cutting all soda from my diet, and by sticking with 20+ hour fasts daily (and a multi-day fast now and again) I have been able to keep losing fat. All of my pants are loose, even the 'skinny' pants I'd bought several years ago (or a decade or two if I'm honest). Whoever started pimping out this IF plan on the blog is a freakin' genius. I've been eating all kinds of crap for the past month, still lost weight.
I think that Dr. Fung fella is on the right track: it's mostly not about WHAT you eat, but when and how often.

That said, I did find a you tube video about how fructose is especially bad. I'd offer up a bunch of caveats, though, it seems like it may be single-sourced to a guy named Lustig, who has detractors; and I can't vouch for the science. But it does make sense: the 'obesity epidemic' started around the same time sugar (half glucose half fructose) was replaced by pure fructose as the sweetener of choice for all kinds of stuff.

53 Yohimbe was played by Toshiro Mifune, right?

So losing weight is GAINNZZ not LOZZEZ, right? I've lost weight since I last posted on GAINZZDAY (about 15 lbs), and my bench has stayed steady (went up a bit, actually - I have a new PR), but my deadlift has dropped a bit. I think part of that is form-related (in fact, I might start trying sumo stance), and part is that it's been a while since I deadlifted anywhere near my PR - for the past two months it's been more reps at a lower weight.

Similar problem with my writing. I just can't get back into the routine I had before the holidays.

Baby steps, though. This week was better than last week. Next week should be better still (although there's a three day sales conference that I have to go to, so that might include meals I need to go to that I normally wouldn't eat). We shall see.

there are a lot of mobility videos from Kelly Starlett on youtube (i think he calls it "WOD" or something for workout of the day).

Mobility exercises are pretty tedious and not very fun, but they do work, if kept to. The time horizon is like six months to really improve mobility, though. Physical therapists recommend doing half an hour of mobility exercising per day (according to which spots need it the most).

74 What I've learned in last month is that eating bread is the gainzzz killer. I had cut out all bread for the last few years but ate the other carbs as normal . Stayed in good shape with exercise. Last month I started eating bread again because of the convenience during a busy time and bam! Gainzzz killer. Stopped the bread again but man I'm going to miss the convenience of sandwiches.

With your scale, hydration matters on the BF% it gives you. It works by measuring the resistance through your body. So if you are well hydrated one time and not the next, its going to have an impact on those numbers.

78 I hit a plateau for over a week. The Jerome strips were only turning pink and I was fasting 23 hours and eating one meal a day of 4 fried eggs and steak/hamburger patties.

I checked the NyQuil which to my shock has 13 grams of sugar and 93 calories per serving. Then I checked the powered Splenda, which has dextrose as the main ingredient, which acts a a gram of sugar in the body

After over a week of ditching those, the Jerome strips are purple to dark purple and the weight is melting off again.

My two cents so people don't make the same mistake.

92 IF is going great. I like knowing I can function quite well with no food for a long time--a mental thing. Recent yearly physical had *no* warning signs from blood tests, BP is normal. Incipient pre-diabetes appears to be diverted!

One improvement I had was a knee issue. About three years ago I slipped and fell HARD on one knee, but amazingly was able to get up and keep walking with no injury other than bruising. However, it was giving me sharp pains now and then with no sign of healing completely. Turns out it was sore tendons and tight leg muscles. My trainer is quite good at correcting issues like that. Gave me the right stretches to do...and the pain is gone. I work out quite a bit so this was a revelation to me--sometimes the stretches really are necessary as tight muscles can cause problems elsewhere. Stretches, and a few deep tissue massages (oh, the pain...) are good things.

Holidays have been...unkind but I'm back on IF.

I started taking some GNC testosterone booster. Probably garbage but we'll try it out. I'll take a look at citralline, thanks.

Have done a little light weight work in the morning and, because getting old is fun, I'm having to do some P.C. muscle exercises to avoid pissing myself. TMI? TMI. Moving on.

Trying to walk the dog more, for his benefit and mine (pup had a spinal injury that laid him up most of the year). And starting to get a little arthritis in my right middle finger which is very specific and obscure but it interferes with some handguns I like. So may need to re-profile the grips on my Glock 19.

Otherwise, feeling a little better than this time last year. Belly still too big but baby steps. Making progress.

---

I know how hard it is. I watched my Mom try to quit many times; however, my Dad had a long term illness and she was incredibly stressed all the time. So I understand. Life is hard enough without trying to stop an addiction. Because that's what it is.

Also... when you're married and have a family, everything you do impacts them. If you have kids and you get sick, it will be hard on them. We never think about that, but that's the way it is. As much as you personally don't want to suffer, you don't want your children to see you suffer. And they don't want that for you.

If you want to do this, you can. Both of my parents stopped for medical reasons. And if you're stubborn, all the better. Make the stubbornness work for you-- use your stubbornness to prove everyone who says you can't quit to be wrong!

I want to be able to pass the tape test to get into the Guard or Reserves, and I think if I can hit 210 I'll make it. Still only getting twice a week in the gym, and it's not on a regular schedule which leaves me very sore when I do lift, and my squat has dropped down to 245 from 295 at its peak.

Personal development.

I've been going to a swing dance regularly on Thursdays. In February I'm going to sign up for the lesson series, which is only about $50. I'm also planning to sign up for an introduction to blacksmithing course in Pasadena. It's $60 for a half-day, but after that I can take a few of the other courses and pay $30 on open forge days.

I quit smoking (again) on New Years. I hate the New Years resolution thing but a buddy and I decided we would quit together and he picked New Years so here I am.

It's actually pretty easy for me despite it being a pretty stressful time. I just focus on all the things about smoking I don't like, the cost, the smell, the social outcast nature of smoking and try to focus on how much better I feel everyday without a smoke.

Once you get past the first week it gets a lot easier.

Making some good gains working mainly my legs and upper body. The back surgery is taking longer to come back from that I had thought, played havoc with my sea legs, so strengthening them is a must.

Fasting doesn't work for me. I just pig out after starving myself. Just eating in moderation and experimenting with different chicken and pork recipes.

128 Last summer, lost 6 pounds on vacation (Philippines) and dropped a few more when i got home to get down to 211, which was my weight when i got married mumblety years ago.

So then came the slide, combined with an on-going heel-pain issue that keeps me from jogging and i was back to 225+ by Xmas.

So back to being good in January. Problem is i know how to lose the weight. Just a matter of entering my Zen want-to-lose-weight mode.

1) Stop drinking calories
2) 3 scrambled eggs for breakfast
3) 2 bowls of soup during the day at work
4) Eat any reasonable dinner
5) stop snacking after dinner
6) 30+ minutes on the elliptical each night

Down 4 pounds so far this month and haven't even been good on #5

Convince yourself that the feeling of an empty stomach is good (or at least acceptable)

Now i have to maintain the streak. Willpower is strongest before the first give-in to temptation. One coke leads to two cokes....

131 >>>Will be fluent in a new language and 40 lbs lighter by year end

time scale on fluency in a foreign language is going to be longer than that, unless you do something very immersive. Even if you do something semi-immersive, like going to a local college's conversation class, that's just an hour or two a week and won't really get you there.

It's definitely doable, but "fluency" takes a while. Just don't want you to get frustrated about that.

ps, immersion is critical -- sign up for conversation classes or free conversation groups. without being forced to use the language at real-time speed, you won't ever really get it.

also look into getting a channel in that language on cable. The spanish ones are free, of course.

Posted by: ace at January 13, 2017 05:49 PM (8rNrN)

No. You can't. You have to get that weight moving upwards - almost halfway up - before you can engage your hips. Ideally my legs are 'leg pressing' early on - and they are - and I'm holding the weight with my arms rather than using my back. I haven't turned that into a back movement.
My one criticism of the lift: my back is slightly more rounded than I would prefer. Not too badly, but somewhat. I will work on that. It's a downside of working out alone - nobody there to critique me; and an advantage of having someone videotape me - I can review it later and critique myself.
I appreciate your comments. I'm always looking to improve and your comments help.

Thank you, sweetie!

And thanks for all your great ideas on 'healthy fats.' I pay attention, and I've incorporated many of them into my eating habits, e.g., sliced black olives, cottage cheese, sour cream, avocados, just to name a few.

Another key advantage of the healthy fats: they effectively kill my urge to snack between meals during my eating cycle.

Funny thing is I actually feel better after the heart attack since I'm getting enough oxygen and blood flow now. No changes in weight yet but they said it takes longer for women.

My hobby is making sure I learn how to dream when I sleep. Yes, you can
do this. Obviously, I steer towards the erotic dreams and playing
baseball.
--
1. You already dream, you just don't remember them.
2. Wake up slowly, without an alarm. Think about your dreams before you open your eyes.
3. Some say a notebook on the nightstand helps; you write anything down you remember as soon as you wake up.
Posted by: shibumi, who requires a cute kitty story stat! at January 13, 2017 05:54 PM (J5mC3

That's great advice. I do those things. It's awesome when you are dreaming hard and could wake up but remain sleeping. That's when things become both fun and interesting.

I've found that when in that state and the longer and more conscious you are about it, the crazier it becomes. Kinda like Inception, your dream can turn on you and become an out of control chaotic ride. I think it is to purposely cause you to wake up.

I've also found myself waking up making out with my pillow or humping the cushions in the couch. It's pretty amusing.

I don't feel like I've slept unless I remember my dreams now. And more practice the more intense the dreams feelings of being well rested when I wake up.

208 I lurk all week waiting for the gains post.
Today I finally ditched the bands for dips and knocked out 3x2. Not much but the last time I tired that I did two and injured my shoulder so I held back a little.
To learn the movement I experimented with bands, negatives, and just standing and moving my shoulders and arms as if I was doing the dips, to get the movement in my head.
Then today, the bands just felt wrong, and I knew it was time to try dipping for real. I'd like to knock out sets of 10 in a 4-6 months.

210 I'm probably at least one of the folks who mentioned citrulline.

Among other properties, it's somewhat of a vasodialator, which can help with the 'pump'. I've found it beneficent for lowering blood pressure a bit. It helps with blood flow overall, which can help make Mrs. Moron smile.

Most of the 'pre-workouts' have significant caffeine. There are some that are 'stim-free', which are generally the ones I use. My two mainstays are GAT JetFuse (very minor amount of caffeine) and GAT PMP (stim-free). There are a couple of others that have been good, IME.

You might consider adding creatine, and possibly beta-analine. Beta-analine can cause 5 minutes or so of the 'tingles'. JetFuse has beta-analine, but in a low enough amount I don't notice it.

212 I've finally stopped thinking about doing, and am doing. I start my day with pushups, planks, and some dumbbell curls. Going really slow, because I am no spring chicken.

Got a Microsoft Band for Christmas, replacing my old one, which died last summer. Amazing what a positive influence a little electronic thing can be, but, there it is. I walk more than I did in the six months when I was band-less.

Weight loss is something I need to look into, but I know if I take on too much at once, I will quit. But even a few years ago when I was unloading trucks at Walmart and walking all around the store (10 or 15 miles a night), I never went below 225. I'm just built that way, I guess. But I am well beyond that now. Bottom line is I just have to be realistic in knowing I'll never look like Tom Hardy.

The irony that I type this while sipping a beer is not lost on me. heh.

I found myself starting a personal genealogy project last week and have already made some interesting discoveries. Finding out real things about relatives I never met during their lives is quite a charge.

Aren't those type of exercises the most difficult to have perfect form? They are full body exercises, so there are more muscles you have to keep control of. Whereas with something like a bench press or a curl, you are limiting which muscles are involved in the exercise, so it is easier to focus on those few.

I'm certainly no expert, but if you are concerned about injury, I would think the more focused exercises would be the safer ones.

285 Found some great deals on an armoire and a fancy night stand for Mrs. Hot Gates. (think: Pennies on the dollar.)

Also, have plans and materials lists for a new privacy fence and a new 500 sq ft patio, which I'll be installing later this summer.

Using locally sourced materials, the 80' fence will go up for under $600. The patio should be under $1500, including pavers, gravel and forms.

I might pay someone to drill the post holes for the fence posts, so that'll drive costs up a bit.

...and the memeplex I designed and released into the wild sixteen years ago, is performing quite well. Mutations (alt-right, NrX-ers, etc) are well within design parameters.

289 I started doing the apple cider vinegar thing I keep reading about. I already eat a fairly low carb diet but figured it couldn't hurt.

Citrulline is good in a pre-workout, just make sure you're getting at least 1 g, preferably 2-3 g per serving, which has been shown effective in studies. A lot of preworkout will give you a minuscule dose (or hide the dose being "proprietary blend") to save money b/c it's not a cheap ingredient.

A simple, quick way to tell if you have a Candida problem is to take a few tablespoons of coconut oil a day, or steep a tsp of cinnamon in 8 oz water and drink that 3 times in one day.
If you have the squirts the next day, from either of those things..you have a Candida overgrowth.

Fresh or salt, dry or wet?

I hate tieing flies and I'm not good at it but I'm pigheaded and store bought flies don't look like what I have in my head so I do tie my own.

For saltwater. For dry flies I'm happy to let other people lose their eyesight. Maybe I should make learning to tie dries one of my gainzz.

305 NorCal almost flooded big time - tropical sheets of rain north of Sacramento in the Sierra/Cascades HWY 70 area. That always turns to disaster. It's a weather convergence point. Wind shear on ridges snaps tree's in half and small tornadoes or water spouts aren't uncommon there. Between Quincy and rural Portola. Nasty.

During the Pineapple Express we got a cold front from the north and the temperature dropped below freezing in the mountains @ ~4000ish+ feet.

Saved. By. Happenstance.

335 I started mid July at around 226. I lost 1-2 pounds a week until late October when I stabilized at 208 and gained back some. I stopped snacking on salted peanuts that the gain dropped, but I stayed 208 to 212 through the holidays - a rough effing time that included the loss of my bride of 24 years to effing leukemia withing 2 weeks of diagnosis!
After Christmas I started walking - I'm up to about 75 minutes of fast walk in the morning (3.6-4.0 miles) while still fasting. My blood sugars are normalizing from 139 to 122-115 and the weight drop is starting: 205 yesterday. My last A1C went from 7.6 to 7.0
Its no longer a diet - its a lifestyle. Stay away from the carbs, more protein and fats, breakfast 11-noon, dinner 5-6. Big salad with feta or gorgonzola, oven roasted almonds, craisens, avocado, and then a smaller main course. I'm not always perfect at it but I seem to agree with it.

Posted by: Dave Head at January 13, 2017 10:26 PM (AtF0K)

336 Well I'm stalled in the fat loss, I hit a low of 160lbs and for the last month have been hovering around 165lbs, stalled in muscle gain (or strength gain at least), stalled in fat loss, and getting tired of eating the same things because they're the only easy things to eat on LCHF. So I decided to switch it up a week and a bit ago. 2 day fast ending in a huge 3 hour weight pushing workout while sucking in BCAA supplements and protein. Then it was 3 days solid of eating like a body builder and working out every day. Two days of rest and regular eating, then 2 day fast, and back to the working out hard and eating hard for 4 days in a row. I saw big gains in the strength department in the second week. Personal records on the bench, squat, shoulder press, triceps pull-down, and chin-ups. I'm thinking the BCAAs are making the most difference, but it might just be the extra eating on workout days since that's new too. But I'm not feeling the pain nearly as much post-workout like I used to, and I had tried the big eating before. Weight currently at 167lbs going into my 2-day fast starting tomorrow. That should cut me down a few pounds of fat at least. My muscles are definitely looking bigger, but my belly still has the last bit of fat hiding my abs, refusing to let go. I seem to lose fat from everywhere else first when restricting calories, and then when I let loose I gain it on the belly first. I'm starting to see the veins in my arms, in my shoulders, calves, and even the front hip. At this point I'm ready to paint the abs on with body paint and do the photo op before and after. Goal achieved, just try to maintain. We'll see...
