House Passes Mattis Waiver; Also Moves First Step in Obamacare Repeal

The Mad Dog is unchained.

As you probably know, a federal law of questionable constitutionality states that a nominee must be at least seven years a civilian before being appointed to a cabinet position.

The House voted 268-151 on the waiver. Thirty-six Democrats voted in favor of the waiver, while one Republican, Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.), voted against it.

The Senate on Thursday voted 81-17 to pass the waiver.

Amash, huh? Keep your eye out for that name in the next story.

The House also took the first step towards repealing Obamacare, which is a measure to block the Democrats from filibustering a repeal in the Senate:

The framework does not directly deal with repealing the Affordable Care Act. Rather, it would prevent Democrats from using a Senate filibuster to derail a future bill nixing and replacing the health law. That's critical because it takes 60 votes to end filibusters, and Republicans have only a 52-48 Senate majority.

The budget, which does not need the president's signature, was considered a critical step for majority Republicans in their bid to work with the incoming Donald Trump administration in fulfilling vows to replace the health care law.

According to Phil Kerpen, Amash was super-busy in the House today:

Update: Drew provided this explanation from Amash:

6 Amash must be tired of being a politician. Plus a no vote in the Gen Mattis waiver has to mean he doesn't know any military personnel. We sure he's a Republican?

7 What the fuck, Amash? Isn't he supposed to be the Sooper Libertarian?

Posted by: Nurse Ratched at January 13, 2017 04:36 PM (VSXuz)

Because the repeal isn't actually a repeal. It's a diversion of funds from Obamacare to a slush fund for purposes to be named later (i.e., whatever they come up with for replacing obamacare).

12 When Amash was first running for the House in 2010, there was a story about his voting in the Michigan Legislature. If he hadn't read a bill up for a vote, he voted against it. Period. This made a number of people unhappy at various times, and he would frequently be the lone No vote on a lot of innocuous and popular things.

This is more likely than not him sticking to that principle.

Well yes and no. It is actually not all that straight forward. Congress did pass a Bill saying Jerusalem is the Capital of Israel and Ordered the President to move the Embassy there. HOWEVER it gave him an out about moving the Embassy by letting him waive that every 6 months with a stroke of his pen. And every President Republican and Democratic has done that. But "Technically" Jerusalem- at least West Jerusalem- is the Capitol of Israel.

269 From the sidebar.

For John Lewis and those of his ilk, it is always 1965.

He has nothing else to hang his hat on. Never mind that the inner cities run by him and his party have rampant single parent "families" , gangs, drugs and despair and hopelessness all centered around the EBT and welfare system.

52 year's John. 52 years of steady decline, decimation and decay.

Most of the people affected by him and his party wouldn't know 1965 if it fell on top of them.

But it will always be 1965 for John Lewis. Too bad we can't segregate him from the rest of his community.

The Jerusalem Embassy Act of 199 is a public law of the United States passed by the 104th Congress on October 23, 1995. It was passed for the purposes of initiating and funding the relocation of the Embassy of the United States in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, no later than May 31, 1999, and attempted to withhold 50 percent of the funds appropriated to the State Department specifically for Acquisition and Maintenance of Buildings Abroad as allocated in fiscal year 1999 until the United States Embassy in Jerusalem had officially opened Th.e act also called for Jerusalem to remain an undivided city and for it to be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel. Israels declared capital is Jerusalem, but this is not internationally recognized, pending final status talks in the Israeli Palestinian conflict. The United States has withheld recognition of the city as Israels capital. The proposed law was adopted by the Senate (93 5), and the House (374 37).

Since passage, the law has never been implemented, because of opposition from Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama, who view it as a Congressional infringement on the executive branchs constitutional authority over foreign policy; they have consistently claimed the presidential waiver on national security interests.

352 In my perfect world, Blue Cross would get into the wayback machine, and give me back my old, cost effective policy with a (get ready folks, you won't believe this) $250 deductible. Which was almost $200 lower than what I'm paying now on a silver policy.

Try a $6500 deductible here, then it covers 50%. Unfortunately, I hit that and then some last year and will again this year....take my advice....don't have a heart attack 2 weeks before your plan year is up......

My BC/BS policy went from$1500 deductible w/ rx coverage and a "Free annual check up" to $6000 deductible, no rx coverage, no covered check up. $235/month to $640/month. Thanks Obama!

355 In general, Amash is okay.

Haven't read all the comments, but he was stripped of his committee positions by Boner because he was 'an asshole'.

He has his principles and sticks to them, even if it flies in the face of some of this procedural maneuvering.

365 So, basically, the establishment crafted a piss on you and tell you it's raining "four years down the line, maybe we might do something about Obamacare, but for now let's just break the health insurance market even worse than it is already and call it repeal" bill. Then they stuffed it so full of crap spending that the biggest budget-hawk member of Congress balked, saying that fake-repeal of Obamacare isn't worth it.

And now we're supposed to be mad at the budget hawk for not playing that bullshit game?

Posted by: Sayyid at January 13, 2017 08:59 PM (iTdhx)

366 I hope my name recognition will keep me from being confused with a concern troll.

I have some family that rely on the Obamacare insurance policies. Right now they are very concerned that it's going to be taken away and they don't know what it will be replaced with.

So while we're anxious to undo Obama's b******* we should realize how vulnerable it makes people feel and make sure that we're talking about the new structure before we start talking about the repeal
