Thread below the Gardening Thread: Chicago Dreams and Memes [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Well, I missed Obama's Last Campaign Rally this week. Yes I could, yes I did. But the Chicago location of the rally triggered me to seek out a safe space for thought somewhere in Chicago. Maybe with the Chicago Boyz?

David Foster wonders why college professors and entertainers often have similar political views. Do you have any clues?

I also found his nice little piece on Jargon, Proverbs and Memes. It starts with a discussion of buzzwords in education. He also quotes Sarah Hoyt:

Of all the ways people have come up with to avoid thinking, I like memes the most. They are so ridiculously easy to fall into. You see the words, you see the picture and you go "ah ah, that's so true." Even when on a minute's reflection it makes no sense whatsoever. . . I think in a way it follows the same pattern that proverbs followed in more ancient cultures. . . While proverbs were ways not to have to think or short cuts around thinking, they weren't, by themselves, pernicious. . . Proverbs are in a way, the encoding of societal wisdom into short cuts to lead people into ways that have worked before. . . Memes are similar, but you have to remove societal wisdom and put in "the commanding forces of culture and mass media.

What is your favorite buzzword or meme? Or the one that makes you cringe the most?

If you're up to slogging through something a little heavier, how about this summary on Propaganda in a Democracy by Aldous Huxley? There are some seriously long paragraphs in it. Longer than this one:

In their propaganda today's dictators rely for the most part on repetition, supression and rationalization - the repetition of catchwords which they wish to be accepted as true, the supression of facts which they wish to be ignored, the arousal and rationalization of passions which may be used in the interests of the Party or the State. As the art and science of manipulation come to be better understood, the dictators of the future will doubtless learn to combine these techniques with the non-stop distractions which, in the West, are now threatening to drown in a sea of irrelevance the rational propaganda essential to the maintenance of individual liberty and the survival of democratic institutions.

Ready to turn off the TV for a while? Take your kid out of college and give him a book?

Have a great weekend.

8 ...I have a high deductible plan through my employer. Our coverage has been getting progressively shittier AND more expensive since they crammed O-care down our throats. The reason for the ever increasing expense has always been: "Shut up, Obamacare." So now that they're repealing Ocare, I can expect Anthem to drop our rates.

33 Why AOSHQ is the best: the commenters make me laugh myself silly at times and laughter is the best medicine. I'm convinced frequent trips to this location is adding years onto my expected lifespan.

Also it's so nice and easy to comment. I have a strict policy of no political commentary on FB (except for "liking" Mr. Trump's posts) and sometimes I just hunger to say something about what I am thinking. I can throw it up here with no fuss or muss. I am not looking to get noticed but it's just very satisfying to do.

Thanks very much guys!

A while back I read the Walter Lippmann book, "The Public Philosophy," which tackles much the same territory, I think. For some reason though, when I read it I had all sorts of "yes, that's us today!" moments, and now I cannot really recall them.

Not because of a poor attention span, more I think because events are spinning fast now. I should re-read it at some point. And would highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't.

49 >>What is your favorite buzzword or meme? Or the one that makes you cringe the most?

Heh, my brother has a poster depicting a variety of popular idioms (kinda like a Richard Scary book) - son loves it.

First, I hate how often tv newspeople/hosts rely on idioms and other phrases as shorthand for actually articulating a point or story. Sports host are the *worst*!! I realized how often I did this when I worked with a recent immigrant. He would just exclaim, "Woman, what are you talking about?"

Second, I hate how often people mangle idioms or sayings. Sure, it's funny when someone says, "it's a doggie dog world," but makes me wonder what they even think they are saying, like they're so lazy they fall back on a shorthand that they don;t even understand.

54 I was going to urge Trump to threaten to permanently expel any reported who persisted in shouting at him during a press conference.

Apparently, they already did.

"CNN's
Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta said Donald Trump's
spokesman Sean Spicer threatened to expel him from Trump Tower if he
attempted to ask another question after a contentious exchange with the
president-elect during Wednesday's news conference. "After
I asked and ... demanded that we have a question, Sean Spicer, the
incoming press secretary, did say to me that if I were to do that again I
was going to be thrown out of this press conference," Acosta told CNN's
Wolf Blitzer and Jake Tapper, speaking on "Inside Politics."
This putz Acosta thinks he's in a position to "demand" a question. I think he's going to find out he's not.

Posted by: Brave Sir Robin at January 14, 2017 11:31 AM (ty7RM)

No you are incorrect, while both Fascism and Communism are totalitarian/collectivist, they are two different economic models.

Fascism allows for private ownership of industry but that industry is subject to authoritarian (and capricious) control of "the State." That is why industry always seeks governmental patrons and why governmental officials attempt to vector business to the industries they are patronizing.

Communism does not allow ownership of private property and assumes that "the State" controls the means of production.

While on the subject of buzzwords, we have got to stop using the term "Crony Capitalism" when "Fascism" is meant. Crony capitalism is a term created by leftists to discredit capitalism.

104 Leftists are extremely good at the words game. They never finish a sentence and it is promoted as the meme of the day or decade. If they ever said the entire sentence it would be over. So Trump presidency is illegitimate....because we leftist didn't vote for him. Crazy.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 14, 2017 12:00 PM (QDnY+)

163 On college professors and entertainers.

Both are employed where the left's long march succeeded first. They were the first targeted because the goal of the "march" was to cause a cultural change. To cause people to be emotionally attached to, attracted to, things and ideas of the left and repulsed by conservative/right-wing/traditional things and thoughts.

To be a college professor requires a grad degree mostly a PhD. Getting there means being selected for admission into a degree program. Over the years, in many departments, those doing the selecting have advanced only their fellow leftists or those they think are such. This selection process has had the effect of tilting the academe to the left.

In the entertainment business the process worked by wresting control of the deciders in the industry. Grad degrees from major colleges being preferential to getting the leading management positions led to those positions leaning left. With the competition for "on camera" jobs being fierce then kissing up to the boss is a way to get ahead and make that multi-million income and keep it coming.

The graph in this piece shows the effect of the "long march."

http://tinyurl.com/joqo9yw

The line for the...
"Intellectual Upper: Also at the 95th percentile of
income and with a graduate degree, but a lawyer, academic, scientist
(hard or soft) outside academia, writer, in the news media, or a creator
of entertainment programming (film and television)."

164 Last night I went online to try and get an IPass, for tollroads in
Illinois. The Illinois tollway website was a complete mess. I couldn't
find a thing that would help me get an IPass. However, they did have a
banner on their homepage to tell me all about diversity. It's a tollway.
What's diversity got to do with paying a buck fifty to get off in
Deerfield?

I got mine in the mail today. What a pain in the ass website. I'm being forced to get one here in Illinois because they're starting cashless toll roads. Cost me $30 in fines plus 3 tolls on the new 390 Elgin O'Hare about a month ago.

They don't realize that we all just want to be loved. I will point this out to them. I can solve the world's problems. I will bring us all together."

Yes. Smart--- and/or righteous and/or chic.

But note that this would not have worked 100, or even 50, years ago when the standards for being "smart" were quite different in the academy itself. Imagine Bette Davis trying to prove herself "smart" by trying to conjugate a Greek verb!

(And imagine anyone thinking that knowing Greek made you more holy, much less "cool.")

The degradation of the humanities, the anti-intellectualism on the campus itself, and the rejection of serious scholarship for facile ideology, have made it possible for common prostitutes to imitate professors.

The meme makes me crazy is that Fascism/Nazism are constructs of the right. Fascism is Communism with better uniforms.

Posted by: Brave Sir Robin at January 14, 2017 11:31 AM (ty7RM)

No you are incorrect, while both Fascism and Communism are totalitarian/collectivist, they are two different economic models.

Fascism allows for private ownership of industry but that industry
is subject to authoritarian (and capricious) control of "the State."
That is why industry always seeks governmental patrons and why
governmental officials attempt to vector business to the industries they
are patronizing.

Communism does not allow ownership of private property and assumes that "the State" controls the means of production.

While on the subject of buzzwords, we have got to stop using the
term "Crony Capitalism" when "Fascism" is meant. Crony capitalism is a
term created by leftists to discredit capitalism.

Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at January 14, 2017 11:45 AM (5Yee7)

Differences of degree. When I was in law school, my leftist Property professor taught that ownership has 3 attributes: (1) the ability to sell something you own; (2) the ability to use what you in own however you want to use it; and (3) the right to the income that derives from the thing you own (the usufruct). If government can control (1) and (2) and get whatever it wants of (3), then "ownership" is just a matter of semantics.

Trump has been meeting with members of minority communities since he was campaigning for office. He is serious about improving the lot of inner-city residents. I think it was after his election he said he was upset about the untapped potential in low income neighborhoods, and intends to do something about it. When he refers to the Forgotten Man, he's including those of all races.

The shots he's taking at John Lewis are not just political grandstanding. He knows that the inner cities have been betrayed by their "leadership", and is aware that more and more minorities are waking up to that realization.

307 Professors and actors are a part of what are long refered to as the Chattering Class. The Chattering Class can expound , believe any nonsense because the nonsense has no terminating effect on their livehood or life in general, most likely a benefit to them of the Dunning-Kruger effect. The Chattering Class will be larger in an affluent society, you will not see as many in a subsistence society.

The Chatter Class also includes clergy, journalists and politicians. Sting, an idiot he may be, sang about them in De-doo-doo-doo, De-da-da-da with the verse about Poets, priests and Politicians.

People who have to depend on their understand of what is real and true such as engineers, farmers and warriors are not part of the Chattering Class because believing and promoting nonsense leads to failure and even death.

The Chatter Class can distort everyone elses reality for some time. Their interference with the market and with society through the heavy hand of government becomes the reality that businessmen, banks, farmers and soldiers have to contend with rather than the reality of numbers and human nature. Following through with the nonsense this inevitably leads to failure and death. As ye sow so shall ye reap. See the CRA leading to the 2008 Housing Burst and Obamacare.

When the Chattering Class of an affluent society overwhelm the truth of reality with their nonsense the Gods of the Copybook Heading step in. Be not deceived, God is not mocked. See Venezuela, Argentina, Cuba.

Yes I know. Always. That still doesn't answer the "why" question.

If you have a job in the Trump Administration, have a nice punch and pastry party to celebrate. Then get to work. If you are Congresscritter or one of the zillions of staffers, go do your thing elsewhere. If you are lobbyists, we're not friends. We don't have common interests. 317 Re: the DC NG general. It's the National Guard, which does not handle assignments like the active duty side. First, people can stay in a slot they like for years; I've seen guys retire as E-4 in a slot that they occupied for 30 years. At the General Officer level, it's almost purely a political appointment, so as long as someone wants you there and you want to be there, you pretty much get to stay there.

Tenure of TAGs is not the same as active duty or reserves. Lot of TAGs served in that position for 30-40 years, albeit you gotta go back pre-1966 for those. Recently the Oregon TAG stepped down after 17 years. Kinda depends on the officer and his connections, and the next guys down and theirs.

321 Haven't bothered to see how it settled out, but was happy to read that Trump's inaugural festivities were being scaled back. Thought that would be the perfect "message" (ouch, there's a meme I kinda hate, speaking of that topic again). I think their small number of events will have an even more pronounced military/first responder sort of focus than recent inaugurals, also good.

Just guessing but from what we've seen I think Trump would be happy to do a "drop by" at two parties and then spend a sleepless night in the Oval signing EOs and calling world leaders.

325 Trump has been meeting with members of minority communities since he was campaigning for office.

344 Lotta misconceptions about college professors upthread. I believe the Horde is thinking primarily of academics in the humanities and social sciences. Those in the STEM subjects, especially at research universities, are not typically out and proud SJWs, work their asses off, and serve a critical function in advancing society, both through their own work and through training future researchers.

Don't think so? Ever had an MRI? Ultrasound? Taken antibiotics? Flown in an airplane? Operated a computer? A former colleague of mine invented the Li ion battery. Professors don't do anything essential, eh?

Each of those things depended on earlier research in math, physics, chemistry and engineering, which is performed in no small measure by STEM professors.

Thanks. I recently was reminded of how the infestation of academia now proceeds when contemplating teaching part-time at a local junior college. To apply one basically has to attest to one's (leftist) political orthodoxy (my favorite was the requirement to include an essay on what one had done to support the LGBTQIA community - whatever that is). This is how bad it is: I know someone who is very pro-life. She is also a church going conservative Republican. She feels she can say NONE of that because she is a union officer and will not get voted into her position year after year if she lets her beliefs be known. Does she make that much on her union job? Hell no. But she wants to be popular and accepted in the workplace, so she keeps her opinions to herself.

Conversely, my long distance employer is very liberal. However, I see him maybe once a year-- not even that-- and we NEVER talk politics. So it's ok.

Thanks, rhomboid. I'm not saying there are no leftist STEM professors. Of course there are, and always have been (most notably Linus Pauling, for example). But by and large STEM profs, while tending to be on the liberal side, just go about their work and aren't on about their politics. We leave that shit to the humanities and social science types.

"Climate science" is a pathological case, IMO. Because it cannot be falsified, strictly speaking it's not science, and exerts a siren call to charlatans, much like diet and nutrition (yeah I'm looking at you, Gary Taubes) and health and wellness generally (as you were, Andrew Weil and Deepak Chopra).

Shame cultures are useful for tyrants, commies, and muslims. Freedom and individual rights...not so much.

396 I don't mind when social pressure and shaming is used to shape behavior, I think that's a reasonable and proper way for a culture to behave. It has to follow an absolute, objective set of moral codes to be of any value, and those codes need to be righteous and good or you're just enforcing evil... but I don't mind the concept of social shaming.

But that's not where the left stops. And their system isn't based on anything except the latest idea by a radical in college. Progressivism is infinite, there's no final point reached where you have progress. Its always progressing, always changing. What was yesterday acceptable is today unthinkable. What was previously ridiculous is now compulsory. They never stop, even after accomplishing their goals, its always one more step of crushing tyranny.

The inertia against which any intelligent, non-racist, freedom-centric forces pursuing the best American traditions of limited accountable govt. and rule of law must contend leaves little room for optimism.

And it's not just the soft malleable minds of the young'ins. I was exposed to a new dimension of degradation last year when adults/parents of my age, when asking a college freshman about his living arrangements, were using language and concepts ("diversity!") of the new degraded era.

The only exception - and by definition an example of lawlessness that is novel and intolerable - is the scam whereby the feds or a state govt. Over the last century the universities have abandoned the liberal arts in favor of utilitarianism.

In the humanities, this has meant an abandonment of philosophy (the pursuit of truth and wisdom) in favor of ideology (socially useful ideation.) This has been nothing short of a revolutionary change and the intellectual degradation is clear.

In the sciences, there has not been so much change nor will there be --- because, as you say, they are materially useful and obviously so. The academy thus cannot repudiate philosophy (the pursuit of truth) entirely; it survives in the natural sciences.

I believe it will survive. But wherever and whenever the pursuit of truth might prove to be less than useful or, worse yet, might prove useful to the "wrong" sort of purpose, as determined by the ideologues, it will be subject to attack.

(Eh. Too big a subject!)

I think of all the ways to get the ball rolling, yeah this is the one most likely to work. Dump weed from federal bans, and announce you're kicking it back to the states to decide how they will handle the issue in their own borders.

2) The use of "the thing is" as an essentially meaningless conversation-hogging word tag followed by a second "is".
"The thing is is that Obama..."
