Quotes of The Day

Quote I

If people think nature is their friend, then they sure don't need an enemy. Kurt Vonnegut

Quote II

If we do not discipline ourselves the world will do it for us. William Feather

Quote III

Quality is not an act, it is a habit. Aristotle

And if you don't succeed at first...........

Quote IV

When the sword is once drawn, the passions of men observe no bounds of moderation. Alexander Hamilton

And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Last Thursday a man named Taylor Trupiano of Roseville, Michigan did what a lot of people do in cold climates.

He walked out of his house, started his car, turned on the heat, and went back inside for a few minutes while his engine and vehicle interior warmed up.

According to Mr. Trupiano, he was only inside for about 7 or 8 minutes.

But by the time he came back to his car, there was already a parking ticket on his windshield– with a fine totaling $128.

Some local police officer had apparently driven by, noticed the vehicle was unattended, written up this heinous infraction, and left.

There are so many things wrong with this story.

gunvirus.png

There are models to track and predict the next victims of gun violence.

Gun violence moves through a city the way a virus moves the body: predictably, but with uncanny precision. New research suggests “virus” patterns can be spotted and possibly help predict and even prevent shootings. But questions remain of whether this can be done ethically, and, most crucially, who can be trusted with this predictive technology.

The significant other left you? The dog won't play with you? Depression hotline put you on hold? If so you may work for Comcast.

Despite a steady drumbeat of promises and efforts to improve its reputation, Comcast remains among the least-liked companies in American history. A new survey from 24/7 Wall Street combines data from the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, JD Power and Associates and a Zogby Analytics poll, and lists Comcast as the "most hated company in America." Comcast had made some small strides in the ACSI rankings last year, but even with minor improvements still consistently battles Charter for last place in most customer satisfaction and service studies.

The ONT Musical Interlude

January 12th 1974, the Number 1 song in the country.

Ray Price January 12, 1926 - December 16, 2013

*****

Have some spare time on your hands? Extra cash you don't need? You can sue the CIA for a list of poisons it uses.

Fortunately, there is now a solution: The law firm of Mark S. Zaid has agreed to represent Porup in a lawsuit for the documents pro bono - Porup just needs to raise the $500 filing fee.

As a freelance reporter, that’s still a barrier, but even more fortunately, our friends at the Freedom of the Press Foundation have offered to cover half of that fee, meaning now Porup is just trying to raise $250 to make his lawsuit a reality.

You can donate below, and track the requests progress on the request page. Any funds raised over the $250 needed will be set aside to fund future requests for national security related information.

The ONT's unofficial-official position, we wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of the CIA.

brewery-road-trip-final3.png

Does this sound like a trip of a life time? Would this be on your bucket list? Top brewery road trip.

Community beer and brewery review site RateBeer puts out a list every year of the top 100 breweries in the world, “according to reviews taken last year and weighted by performance within and outside of style, balanced by indicators of depth.” From this year’s list, 72 of the breweries are based in the United States.

This sounds like a great road trip.

The ONT isn't quite sure how these morons got a bike wrapped up in a fence. Never wrap electric fence around a bicycle.

News tips, loose change and Velveeta coupons can be sent here. Or here petmorons at g mail.

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by the lack of supervision.

100 have heard everyone say that forever. do not believe it. chocolate is only bad for dogs in the same way it is bad for humans, if you sit down and eat a whole box of it in 10 minutes.

even then it is not so much bad for the dogs as it is for the carpet they yak it up on.
Posted by: yankeefifth

It depends on the size of the dog and the amount of the chocolate. A lab that eats a small chocolate probably won't be bad off, but a co-worker had a toy dog that ate almost an entire pan of brownies and ended up at doggie hospital. He might have died, I can't remember for sure.

103 79 RE: the guy who got ticketed for starting his car and leaving it in his drive-- that suburb isn't far from where I live. Same county.

Lots of police departments here have their own special ways of procuring funds via ticketing. Speed traps are a favorite in a nearby city as well.

It's just a way to bilk more money from the taxpayers.

Sad, but true.

Policing for profit. It's been going on for a long time but it's gotten more exposure over time. The absolute worst though are civil asset forfeiture laws. States like Tennessee target out of state drivers, pull them over, and take their cash if they have any significant amount of it. The police department gets to keep 100% of it in some states, which gives them a direct incentive for their road piracy/armed robbery.

meh. lots of it has to do with the dog's diet. our little dog has been on a diet that included human food since she was a puppy. we stupidly started giving her food when we were eating. now 10 to 20 % of her daily calories are from our food.

our big dog has not eaten human food since she was yanked off a street, locked up in the grey bar hotel, and busted out by us. she has no tolerance for any meaningful amount of our food. out both ends.

265 I've learned to hate the last 10 miles of Michigan and the crossing into Toledo. I made at least a dozen trips to and from Florida in 2016. The last 10 miles of I-75 going south into Ohio are bumpy as hell even though it doesn't look it and the first 30 miles of Ohio has been nothing but construction all year. What a mess!! I'll be glad when I get this house sold later this year and I can look at it in my rear view for the last time.

Posted by: Bill R. at January 12, 2017 10:51 PM (jKUeC)

I hear ya, that last ten miles is godawful.

Last time I went there, there was a lot more than 30 miles of construction on 75. It was most of the way to Dayton and I-70. Never forgot that. At that time there was also construction on I-70 towards Indiana. Did the route at night too which drove me up a tree.

Had my car looked over once before I went up there, took off, and by the time I left Detroit I need a new power steering rack which was a $1400 job. Had to be because of the abuse. Fortunately I still had my warranty.

Don't miss the place at all.

The weird thing is, there is a really creepy and disturbing backstory to this.

Steve Miller was listening to an old 1954 doo-wop song called "The Letter" by a group called "The Medallions," and in the song, the lead doo-wop singer says "...discuss the puppetutes of love."

But Steve Miller couldn't understand what the singer was saying (neither could anyone else, for that matter), so when he wrote "The Joker" he (mis)quoted "The Letter"'s lyrics and just guesstimated that the guy was saying "pompatus of love."

Long, long after this became a pop-culture meme, someone finally tracked down the still-alive doo-wop singer, by the name of Vernon Green, and asked what in God's name WERE the actual lyrics of "The Letter" that people had been mis-hearing for decades.

He replied that the word was not "pompatus," but rather "puppetutes," which was a mashup of "puppets" and "prostitutes" (I told you it was creepy), and that a "puppetute" was his personal fantasy version of what the perfect sex partner would be like -- as pliable and obedient as a puppet, but as degraded and hyper-sexual as a prostitute.

Yechhh.

So, for decades people have been unwittingly glamorizing some latent sex-criminal's pervert domination fantasy, because every time they say "pompatus," they're actually referring to women as "puppetutes."

True story.

Back in the early 70's when wall to wall carpeting was the big thing, my parents got it installed in their bedroom. One night, the dog took a dump on the floor. My dad went and got the special cleaning kit we had gotten and proceeded to try to clean it up. About 30 seconds into it, the smell from the shit got to him and up came dinner. Mom spent the next half hour on her knees cleaning up the puke and dog shit.

Three questions:

1. If you are the inheritor of the house, then what right does your brother have to sell it? He may be the executor, but YOU are the beneficiary.

2. If you inherited the house, then in what manner can you not "afford" it? I mean -- you already own it, right? Is it the property taxes you can't afford?

3. Even if you brother DOES sell the house, then all the proceeds from the sale -- presumably a big pile of money -- would be yours, not his. So you wouldn't be homeless at all -- you'd have lots of $$$ from the sale of the house you own. And with that money you could buy or rent another place. Right?

Have some experience in this area. If you inherit the house, the executor cannot sell it. His responsibility consists of seeing to it that title is transferred into your name. Then you can either re-finance it or sell it, your discretion. This is a pretty good time to be re-financing, however, and if the house has a small residual mortgage, the re-fi payments (if you can qualify) would be far less than you would wind up paying in rent.

You might want to speak to a lawyer and a financial advisor about that situation. The lawyer to keep the property from being sold, and the financial advisor to come up with a way to either keep you in that house, or keep you in it long enough to sell it and realize the profit, which you could then invest in more affordable lodgings.

It'll cost money, but the costs of not having good representation and advice could be a lot worse.

I don't remember what all your problems are. I'm the kind of socially inept person that can barely remember a person's name.
But don't give up. One of my brothers went through a down period where he was unemployed for about 6 years. He was in his fifties and his health was terrible, he had diabetes and was having a lot of trouble with one of his legs.

At one point he was being interviewed for a job. While they were taking him around the plant he fell. That ended that opportunity.

Another time he had an interview scheduled and he couldn't go because he was hospitalized.

He kept at it, and kept at it and he finally got someone to hire him. He ended up being employed until he was 70 years old. Don't give up.

I'd take an accounting job, but being out a while combined with my age makes it rather difficult imho. The few interviews I ever had usually told me they had 100 or more applicants, even for part time positions. I just can't compete when there's that many others looking as well.

Self employment is the ideal answer, but haven't made any headway there either. Currently I'm a security guard at a large church.

"Cute kitty story"

The girls were here for Christmas (sorry, old school here) break with their cats. One is 7 month old kitten, really cute.

We have a new puppy (~3 months old) and it was quite amusing to see the two of them interacting. You could tell that they both wanted to play with each other, but didn't know *how*.

Eventually, they figured it out - TOO cute.

Sent video to MisHum, maybe we'll see that on a future Pet Thread.

450 Anybody here get to watch James Corden on the Late Late Show?

I admit I enjoy him, but I usually mute his monologue. He's over the top about Trump hate.

Having said that... he has some great bits. One of them he's been doing with celebrities, is a thing called "Spill Your Guts Or Fill Your Guts."

Corden has a table full of actual, very icky foods, and the celebs have to either answer awkward questions (like "which other celebrity do you really really hate?"), or eat the icky stuff.

Usually Corden has out: hot sauce (not icky), chicken feet, sardine smoothies, cod sperm, bull penis, and (how do they get this?) bird saliva.

Everyone says the bird saliva is the worst. Of course Corden usually chooses it to threaten the celebs with.

Anyway, check it out online. Fun watch.

I don't even know what LBGTQIA stands for, unless it's maybe for homosexuals from Iowa or something. So far all I've got it, "I don't care what perverted shit students do, as long as they keep it to themselves and I don't have to hear about it."

RE: your essay, OMG. you could try "I've supported the LGBTQXYZ population in our area by not endorsing and/ or publicizing all of the videos from the Muslim world in which Queers have been brutally murdered by being thrown off buildings." Or, if you want to really screw with them and need the $$$, search something like "how can I support LGBT etc. locally" and then just put all those points into a piece of creative writing. You know, channel your inner Ellen Degeneres.

RE: my situation... I really liked the work I did for the company, it was just them personally that made it bad. LOL. Purely personal.

The fact that they can't and/or refuse to make a decision on something as simple as "maybe Shibumi can do some freelance work that really won't involve us that much a few times a year" has effing annoyed me. They know my work, I did the same thing for them when I was there. That was never the problem. I quit; I wasn't fired.

Mike H., I think those (106 recoilless rifles) must be the same ones they used to use up in AK (where is tcn?) - I saw pedestals for them along the highway running southeast from Anchorage along Cook Inlet, to do avalanche-prevention in the part of the Chugach range that extended down that far (I think that was part of the Chugach). Think my brother said they longer use them, as they'd finally run out of ammo.

Speaking of which, without looking it up, I think there are several thousand (many) 16-inch rounds still in guvamint storage (Dahlgren, VA?). Sadly, no active platforms to use them up.

Yeah, it is. I could help them a lot. Without wishing to seem immodest, I'm like a retired MLB player offering to coach a high school team. But I'm not willing to jump through the hoops, sit up, beg, roll over, and play dead to do this. Their blurb makes clear that 1) they view their faculty as interchangeable pieces of meat, and 2) at least at the administrative level they're militantly far left.

Apart from that, it looks like a good opportunity.

The funny part is that I'd kind of like to teach chemistry, even at that level, because the subject is usually so poorly taught that it puts kids off forever.

It's usually taught starting with the Schroedinger wave equation, which I think is totally the wrong starting point.

I'd start with a phenomenological approach.

"You're a nineteenth century chemist. You observe that some compounds are blue, some stink, some burn, some are inert, some are gases, some liquids, some solids, some are pulled into magnetic fields, some pushed out of magnetic fields. How can we make sense of these observations, much less predict what will happen in heretofore unexamined cases? That's what we'll consider in this course."

And that would ultimately lead into the wave equation etc., but I wouldn't start there. Indeed, the field didn't start there.

I've been happy with it, though I haven't owned another brand to compare it to.

College Station/Bryan's a good place. Big enough to have almost everything you want, small enough that it doesn't drive you batty with congestion. The official populations of both cities are about 90k and 80k, and there's something like 225k total in the county as a whole. Only downside is that our property prices are a little high, thanks to the college being a constant upward pressure on demand, and a current supply shortage due to slow construction during the Obama years.

It'll crank and crank, and crank, and eventually start, even in -35 weather. Great feature. I would look for it. Avoid recoil-only, or battery-powered starter. Batteries do poorly in the cold.

Understand that Orange County is significantly dependent on certain (think Mouse, for one) tourism facilities, and that the hotels and restaurants that serve those facilities, and the food-service and laundry and etc. outfits that serve those hotels and restaurants, employ a lot of individuals whose residence status in the US is not entirely reliable.

For the first time in a VERY long time, I looked back on Lord Huron's "Fool For Love Single".

I think I recall clearly explaining a very difficult tragedy that had personally befallen me.
Do I remember incorrectly that there were those who projected my difficulties must be related to losing love??
- Well such a supposition in and of itself is wholly fair.

And yet when I point out that there is a lot more to it than that... maybe you guys ought to consider that.

If I am not mistaken, I pointed out that my obsession was less about the lyrics of Lord Huron: and more about the beautiful eternal sentiment that LH provided.
