They were known to call reporters and scream at them if they didn't like a story, force them to change it at the risk of losing future access. In addition, Obama excluded press photographers from many events, preferring to just send the press the WH photographer's pics. Press locked in a closet at a Biden event, etc.

And then there's Holder, who liked to investigate reporters (fox) and tapped the AP office phones.

And then there's Holder, who liked to investigate reporters (fox) and tapped the AP office phones.

I'm hoping we will get both.

It'd be a powerful combo, and long overdue.

That's why I was hoping for a press secretary with the substantive and public stage ability to do it, every day. Not sure Spicer is that - fairly sure he's not close. Which is OK, but to raise the odds of real change for the better - destroying the false frameworks the poor dumbed-down electorate labors within, largely thanks to the press distortion - we will need a lot more.

368 On Menendez: NJ also has, I think, the 2nd largest concentration of Cuban-Americans (surprising, I know). While that community has inevitably become more "average" and less vehemently anti-commie/Castro over the last 30 years, I'd imagine Menendez is still reflecting much of his constituency if he seems not overly thrilled about the Cuban chapter of Fredo's catalogue of foreign policy disasters.

Yeah for a long time now I've called for cuts to the budget to start with the military, because its a black hole of waste and graft. Plus, it shows good faith to cut what you most support and admire, demonstrating you're willing to cut your own sacred cows as you move on to others.

Most of the waste in the military could be shifted over to better spending areas (like retirement and pay for soldiers) but there's so much money moving through there, its insane.

Eisenhower was no dummy. He warned against both the military-industrial and the scientific-industrial complexes, both of which eat up huge amounts of money in the budget now.

They are not content with letting a dictator, who manages to keep his savage little tribal world compartmentalized and somewhat stable, along with his neighbors, alone. Just like Assad. Nope, we have to try to overthrow them and then we are left with what the dictator understood was a backward, survival of the fittest nation, that we think is instantly going to become organized, orderly and civilized once they have "freedom".

I used to think that also until I got a good look at the aftermath of cultures that depend on Islam for organization.

Syria and Iraq should be studied as huge warning bells for centuries.

421 There are significant existing, and significant potential, areas of common interest with Russia.

And there are areas where probably nothing can be done to change their pernicious behavior (e.g. there long-running dangerous game with Iran, which really doesn't gain them anything of value, but makes the region worse for everyone).

Trump is apparently going to liberate American energy production. This will almost certainly contribute to downward pressure on global energy prices, which squeezes Russia (and several other countries). That's just a given, like the climate (heh) - we can't nor should we want to do much about it.

Russia's irresponsible games in Iran (which go back to the mid-90s) are not the major problem - Fredo's destruction of the Iran containment structure laboriously built over years (one of Dubya's several vastly under-rated accomplishments, but one that even Clinton contributed to without much hesitation) is the problem.

As JackStraw (mostly in vain) labored to explain back when this was happening, the problem is that the Iran containment structure was a fragile dam built of many parts, weakly held together by US will power. Once the US abandoned its position, the whole thing was doomed. It was not a case of formal treaty terms, or details. The US had (mostly) bent much of the world to our will on Iran, over nearly 20 years - Obama and his gang of cretins just threw it away, for nothing.

Rebuilding that fragile dam of containment will be very hard, if we even try.

I want Teh Donald winning the WWA smackdown with the press, directly, 100-0. I want Cruz and many others (including cabinet members) taking the vicious AND substantive war club to the press and the Dems (and many in the GOP) with direct specific hard-hitting evisceration.

What I really missed about Trump before he became president, (especially during the primaries), when I thought that he would return to a more liberal Republican type stance that a John Lindsay might have taken, was the amount of vitriol that the press and Democrats as a whole would heap on him.

If I had given that a second of thought, I would have realized that he'd probably never want to give up the fight on those that did, and most of my worries about him would have diminished greatly.

Well, it doesn't seem to be scaring Mexico much and how they have treated the US over the last few decades.

How we're willing to use the military is much more intimidating than the amount we spend on it.

====================

I'm not arguing against that. But, remember, bringing the Founders up in terms of military matters while also supporting any real spending on a national force is kind of weird.

They didn't want a standing army at all. Being the most advanced military in the world wasn't a priority because they were so isolated from the rest of the world at the time.

I think they were wrong about a standing military, and the fact that it doesn't take 2-3 months to cross the Atlantic anymore kills a lot of their rationale for the idea to begin with.

Not that you were arguing for that vision.

596 I'm not arguing against that. But, remember, bringing the Founders up in terms of military matters while also supporting any real spending on a national force is kind of weird.

They didn't want a standing army at all. Being the most advanced military in the world wasn't a priority because they were so isolated from the rest of the world at the time.

________

Seems to me the US Constitution clearly lays out a standing army and who controls it.

If the Founders were opposed to the US having a standing army, why did they go into so many details about it in the US Constitution?

Ladies and gentlemen, when that happens, I think we can officially declare the war on the 2nd amendment over.

Aside from some skirmishes here and there, it'll be 100% done when enough progressives buy guns to protect themselves from a tyrannical government.

All that will be left to fight will be the equivalent of the Japanese soldiers left on isolated islands at the end of World War II.

608 All Authority craves Power ... and the opportunity to use. The constant Republican Flaw is their insistance on giving Power to Government ... yet expecting Government to wield that Power with Restraint.

Which is why the constitution really doesn't call for a big standing army. It doesn't oppose the army either, its just that the founders knew this basic fact from history. A military standing around doing nothing is expensive and a toy that is difficult for those in power to resist playing with.

That said; better to be geared up and ready than caught with our pants down.

Well, I don't think it's accurate to say the Founders were against the US having a standing army. We were always going to have things like a Navy even in peacetime.

I DO think it's accurate to say the Founders did not want us entangling ourselves in other nation's wars and that they would be horrified if they saw where US troops were deployed in the world and why they were there.
