The Morning Report 1/11/17

NYer.jpg

Good morning, kids. Well, what can you say? Jeff Sessions hit it out of the park, the left and their stooges in the peanut gallery completely be-clowned themselves, and Obama talked about himself. Endlessly. Again. His theme song has got to be the Beatles' I Me Mine. I'll let the links speak for themselves. Hat Tip to Legal Insurrection for the New Yorker cartoon smack-down. Anyway, have a better one and remain blessed.

15 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

Near the end of J.J.'s thread yesterday, somebody mentioned the Irving Thalberg award, which is given to Hollywood producers responsible for an output of high-quality films. So the mention of Thalberg reminded me of his wife, the elegantly sexy Norma Shearer:

http://tinyurl.com/jgrmafq

That, of course, is a glamour shot by legendary photographer George Hurrell, and shows Shearer in all of her glossy studio glory. She didn't always look so polished, though; by her own admission "dumpy. . .with shoulders too broad, legs too sturdy, hands too blunt," she also was cursed with small blue eyes that didn't photograph properly as well as the additional burden of appearing cross-eyed because of a cast in her right eye.

In 1920, she auditioned for the great Ziegfeld, who turned her down flat. Three years of struggle followed until Mayer Pictures offered her a six-month contract. By 1925, when Mayer merged with Metro and and the Goldwyn Company, she had blossomed into the studio's biggest star, making $1000 a week.

http://tinyurl.com/jmt8ba4

After the merger, Shearer knew she had to be at the top of her game to remain a star and so began pestering Thalberg - studio chief of production - for better movies and bigger parts. The cool Thalberg never committed himself, but increasingly found himself attracted to the headstrong actress, just as Shearer was falling in love with him.

The two were wed in 1927 and remained married until Thalberg's death in 1936.

And now for some racy pictures: I have read that, as a wedding gift to Thalberg, Shearer approached Ziegfeld's "house photographer" Alfred Cheney Johnston to sit for a series of nude shots. Whether these are from that session, I do not know. But here they are:

http://tinyurl.com/h3c8zcy (demure and SFW)

http://tinyurl.com/hfacnwq (topless, side nudity)

http://tinyurl.com/jnolmqw (topless, with peek of carpet)

And here she is on a cruise with Thalberg:

http://tinyurl.com/jxk5b6a

Hope you all have a lovely day.

Thalberg is truly THE patriarch of American cinema. And near the end of Norma Shearer's life, she helped launch (or so he claims) the career of one of the men who saved the dying film industry from its seeming demise in the late 60s: Robert Evans.

I'm not going to think about the fact that those payments are being made without ever being considered, let alone approved, by my supposed representatives in Washington.

I'm not going to think about the fact that the same US government that's making those payments is pretending to fight against the government of Syria and in support of another bunch of Islamic terrorists.

I'm definitely not going to ask why it is that the American taxpayer is financing all sides of the civil war in Syria.

Nope. I'm just not going to do any of that today.

60 The so-called Ferguson effect officers backing off of policing out of fear that their actions will be questioned after the fact has been talked about but never really quantified. A new study suggests the effect is a reality, with three-quarters of officers surveyed saying they are hesitant to use force, even when appropriate, and are less willing to stop and question suspicious people.

The nonpartisan Pew Research Center questioned at least 8,000 officers from departments with at least 100 officers between May 19 and Aug. 14 last year most of it ahead of the fatal shootings of five officers in Dallas and three officers in Baton Rouge.

What it found was a significant fear among police about their safety and about carrying out some of the everyday acts of policing.

84 A new study suggests the [Ferguson] effect is a reality, with three-quarters of officers surveyed saying they are hesitant to use force, even when appropriate, and are less willing to stop and question suspicious people.

It also degrades policework in other ways, with regards to reducing resources. Officers can't patrol or answer calls unless there are two available, just in case there's an ambush.

173 In 1998, I met Donald Trump at The Sands Hotel in Las Vegas.

He invited me up to his room for a drink.

When I got to his room, Vladimir Putin was there. Putin grabbed me, pulled me trousers down, then held me facedown on the bed spread-eagle.

For the next hour, Trump threw marshmallows at me bunghole while he and Putin drank shots of Southern Comfort.

And it wasn't those little hot chocolate kind of marshmallows. They were the big Stay-Puft kind.

Trump and Putin laughed and laughed. And finally, when they let me go, Trump said to me-

"Hey, Bono. Vlad here's gonna make me President and come Inauguration Night then you and me are gonna play the Marshmallow Game again!"

Then he laughed and I ran and ran away. And now, I'm so scared because Trump's Inauguration's just around the corner.

And me bunghole feels all squidgey all the time.

And that's why our new album's going to be late.

This thing that's miscalled crony capitalism isn't any kind of capitalism. The collusion and merging of business and government, where industries are ostensibly privately owned, but there's only a handful of industries in every market and they're all owned by the ruling elites, their families, or their sycophantic followers, has only been a feature of one economic system: Fascism.

Yeah, we're always either in a drought or flooding. They've used the term "flash drought" to describe a HORRIBLE DROUGHT that lasts a month or two.

*looks around*

Oh, wait, that's actually mostly true.

2015:

>>Hot, dry weather lingered in the summer, and by October, 86 percent of the state was in some level of drought. More than half of the state was in the two worst drought categories of extreme or exceptional. Yet, by the end of October, the drought conditions were erased by heavy rainfall during three consecutive weekends.

>>That included the stormy conditions of Oct. 26 and Oct. 27 that resulted in more than 10 inches of rain in many areas in south Louisiana.

We always end up getting 10 inches of rain! So watch me not freak out over no rain for a month or two.

And yes we lost 800K jobs....ONE MONTH. It was November 2008. A one month freak out over the stock market crash. And then December it was something like -200K, which isn't great, but it's not the end of the world either. And yet all you hear about from the MSM is we were "losing 800K jobs a month", as if that had been going on for 18 months in a row or something.

331 I see the World Economic Forum has deiced capitalism needs to be reformed worldwide to prevent the rise of inequality and populist moments like that that elected Trump. Idiots still still don't it. capitalism isn't the problem. It is Crony capitalism fascism allied and controlled by with huge, overblown govt. that is not the least bit interested in the interests of the citizens it supposedly serves. It is govt.. that is the problem, not capitalism.

It's as if they don't want to understand what is happening around them.

FIFY.

Pet peeve: everyone needs to stop using the term "crony capitalism." That was a term invented by Leftists to discredit capitalism. We are currently suffering under the "Fascist" economic model and need to use the correct term.

4Chan can't believe it's happening and let the whole world know they made this drivel up a couple of months ago, and are having a ball knowing the "Intelligence agencies" AND I USE THE TERM ADVISEDLY.... of the United Frickin' States actually bought this completely unverified, unchecked stupidity and presented it to the President, the media, and consequently, the world.

I don't know about the formaldehyde, unless it's something gone funky in the back of your warmer fridge. If the freezer is still freezing and you have an autodefrost freezer, it may be a problem with a circuit board that is supposed to keep the defrosted water warm until the drip tray evaporates it. That may now be frozen and the cold air that is supposed to go from the freezer to the fridge is now blocked. I've had it happen twice with mine.

This is easily solved. Questions and responses are prepared in advance and displayed on a congressional Jumbotron. When one protester starts yelling, *everyone* starts yelling, including the nominee. The interested parties can read the Jumbotron. Then, napalm. Rinse. Fin.

379 Refrigerator issues with formaldehyde:
Old style insulation has formaldehyde as an ingredient. If the frig is old and not working correctly due to freeze up or rodent infestation, a coil or line may be getting too hot causing insulation inside frig to break down insulation thereby releasing the formaldehyde smell.
If it is cold enough where you live, pull everything out of the frig, put it in totes on the porch, turn off frig and unplug and allow to completely defrost. Remove back cover and look for rodent nests inside the frig.
