The National Laughingstock's Margaret Sullivan: Now That Our Enemy the Right Is Using the Term "Fake News," It's Time to Retire It

Margaret Sullivan seems to be saying that Fake News From Approved Sources Can't Be Fake News.

If you'd prefer not to click on the National Laughinstock, Michael Walsh quotes the best bits at PJ Media.

When Jim DeMint wanted to dis a TV interviewer’s suggestion that Obamacare has merits as well as flaws, the former senator and tea partyer used a handy putdown: "You can put all that under the category of fake news."

When conspiracy theorist Alex Jones wanted to deny a CNN report that Ivanka Trump would take over the East Wing offices traditionally occupied by the first lady, he used the same label.

And when a writer for an arch-conservative website needed a putdown for ABC's chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl, he reached for the obvious: "fake-news propagandist."

Fake news has a real meaning -- deliberately constructed lies, in the form of news articles, meant to mislead the public. For example: The one falsely claiming that Pope Francis had endorsed Donald Trump, or the one alleging without basis that Hillary Clinton would be indicted just before the election.

But though the term hasn't been around long, its meaning already is lost. Faster than you could say "Pizzagate," the label has been co-opted to mean any number of completely different things: Liberal claptrap. Or opinion from left-of-center. Or simply anything in the realm of news that the observer doesn’t like to hear.

No, when I say "fake news" I also mean deceptive news articles intended to mislead the public. Like, for example, the Fake News Media always calling the DNC/Podesta emails hack "election hacking," which is responsible for 52% of all Democrats believing actual election vote tallies were hacked and altered, or CBS radio news deliberately implying that a racist attack of four blacks cutting on a disabled white man was actually a case of whites wolfpacking a black victim.

How is that not fake news according to the definition Sullivan offers?

"Macedonian teenagers" are not the only people who write deliberately-false stories in efforts to get clicks and shape US politics. The art of fake news has been developed and weaponized by (somewhat) well-paid liberals sitting in cozy offices in our "professional" newsrooms for 40 years.

3 When this term was first being coined, I knew it would end up helping conservatives dismiss partisan MSM coverage far more than whatever mileage liberals got out of it.

It's just a pitch right down the middle.

5 For the record, has anyone seen any concrete examples of what liberals/MSM/DNC were talking about when they say "fake news"?

I heard it was nonsense like a clickbait info ad on Facebook?

Do they have any evidence this really swayed any segment of the population?

I'm honestly trying to understand what exactly they were pointing out.

8 They are going to regret spawning that term and moving it into the everyday lexicon. Because it aptly describes very succinctly what a majority of people think about he media.

"Then why do 52% of Democrats now believe it? It didn't happen in a vacuum."

If I were someone like Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, or Donald Trump, I'd be tempted to start every press conference with that.

It less a question of whether he needs them to get his message out (he doesn't), and more of, does the MSM have enough power to hurt his presidency?

That answer is an easy yes.

This sort of fight (where we somehow managed to turn Fake News around on them so completely) is a small battle and a win for us. But we're still in the middle of a war.

Maybe the Obama presidency could be equated to the Battle of the Bulge, where the media managed to counter attack and hold serious ground for a while. But, there was still fighting to be done after that was over and pushed back.

Seriously, why should I believe that WaPo had some unnamed source who told the reporters that? Because WaPo says so?

Maybe it's because I'm more of a certain age than I care to admit, but I do seem to recall a time when reporters wouldn't just believe lock stock and barrel what a government source said and if a source burnt the reporter the way this one did the WaPo, well, the reporter would burn the source in turn.

Same thing with the DNC leadership, they're scrambling to find a way to justify their existence and position. 145 No, when I say "fake news" I also mean deceptive news articles intended to mislead the public

Ace, you're leaving out the PRIMARY FORM of "fake news":

Liberal newspapers intentionally not reporting on stories that make leftism look bad.

This has become so de rigueur and so embedded that they don't even know they are doing it anymore.

Obama hands a couple billions taxpayer dollars to his crony buddies in Solyndra for a doomed-to-fail solar power company, the company implodes and takes the billions with it? NOT REPORTED.

The fact that the military dictatorship in Burma was for decades actually a Marxist-Leninist communist coup? NEVER REPORTED.

99% of the stuff that has appeared on right-of-center blogs for the last 17 years? NOT REPORTED.

That, my friend, is the real fake news.

The WaPo and the NYT can published factual and accurate stories all day long, but it all still counts as "fake news" because these "accurate" stories only exist to cover up and distract the public from the actual important events of the day.

Fake news can consist entirely of truths.

Irrelevant truths, that is.

168 >>>145 No, when I say "fake news" I also mean deceptive news articles intended to mislead the public

"Sloppy editing isn't fake news. Bad reporting isn't fake news. Fake news is written w/ the explicit intent to mislead the audience."

To which I responded that, under these guidelines the UVA rape hoax wasn't "fake news," because that was just a mix of bad reporting (no follow-up with witnesses, no attempt to contact the accused) and sloppy editing (no one said, "Until you have these things, we can't in good faith publish this story"). But I think just about anybody with a brain in their head would recognize that:

A) Yes, in fact, the UVA rape hoax WAS fake news, in that it was literally based on an event that NEVER HAPPENED, and

B) The bad reporting and sloppy editing were DELIBERATE on the part of Rolling Stone, because the story was what they WANTED to be real, and pursuing any actual investigation would have risked damaging their precious confirmation bias.

Well, it is fake. That's been proven by Sheriff Joe. So it doesn't matter whether you buy into it or not. Watch his last press conference and take your head out of the sand. Reasons for a fake birth certificate are open to interpretation at this point, but it is fake.

And the fact the you can tell by the direct correlation of hysterical - "you're a racist" - to the common sense provable facts that it is fake.

They jump on true stories with overwhelming ferocity to shut them down. And they succeeded with their 'birther' name calling with an assist from conservatives like Michelle Malkin.

Sorry, but under Hawaii Law, if both Parents are dead, you can go and get your birth certificate amended...

Its also normal procedure to amend Birth Certs in the case of adoptions...

In 1965 his Mom married Lolo Soetoro in Hawaii... and she moved to Indonesia 2 years later to be with him..

If, as it looks like in Indonesian records, he was adopted by Lolo... his birth cert would have been modified as standard practice.

Which would have muddied the waters....

Thus, needing a further Modification when the Birth stuff started coming up... to conceal the fact he was an Indonesian citizen (which could have been great Political ammunition...)...

Which was perfectly legal for him to do, as both his adoptive parents were dead by then...

Thus, the 'chain' of documents becomes non conclusive of... well... anything except his word...

Hollywood seems a lot like high school - they are favorites/cool kids that are loved because they're beloved (yeah, it's circular). Like a lot of long-time actors she's become quite good at being "[character] as played by Meryl Streep" - we're so familiar with her ticks and tricks that it's hard not to see Streep predominantly in any role she takes on.

293 O/T - but the latest bullshit (at Politico):

Costs of eliminating Obamacare worries hospital officials.

One paragraph of the story warns of an unprecedented health crisis if sick people are unable to get care. Then in the next paragraph, the cost of uncompensated care is bemoaned to reach $1.1 trillion over the next decade.

So which is it? If "sick" people aren't going to be able to get care, then why is there all of a sudden going to be $1.1 trillion in uncompensated care?

294 Geordi wouldn't do that and was admonished by Scotty. "Don't you want a reputation as a miracle worker?

Anyway, I never considered it padding, exactly I think of Scotty's estimates as "I'd like to do it right, but if I have to slap something together so we don't all die, sure, fine, okay."

Though really it was just a writer's device for suspense.

There was an episode of Voyager where the captain mentions inflated numbers and the chief engineer says something like, "No. If I say five hours, I mean five hours. Minimum." That was a cool scene. (The rest of Voyager, whatever. But that scene, in my eyes, makes it not total garbage.)

300 First, I criticize him all the time and never get any flack or bannings. Now, its possible that I'm so beneath everyone's notice that they don't care what I say, but its not true that "we're never allowed to criticize Trump."

Second, I agree it looks petty and stupid but... it seems to work. I wish it didn't, and I wish we lived in a smarter, more mature society, but we don't.

Instead of everyone talking about Streep and the Golden Globes (which every year happens and almost nobody is aware of), they're starting to talk about Donald Trump. Its controlling the narrative.

And Streep is overrated. She's skillful, but not as an actress. What I mean is this: when she does a role, she's not playing for the audience or the story, she's playing for the reviewers and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She's not acting, she's performing for their approval. People don't walk away going 'what a great movie' they walk away going 'wow Streep was great.'

He then gets defensive about some old charge against him and tries to explain through Twitter.

Imagine instead if he just said something pithy like "hope the Golden Globes audience doesn't drown in the Hillary tears!"

rather than getting into Meryl Streeps acting chops.

The problem is, once Trump won, from now on any criticism will be met with "shows what you know, he always wins!!!"

That doesn't mean every decision he makes going forward is the right one.

2. Whenever a multi-national empire like the USSR breaks up, there will be either (a) refugees from the displaced ethnic group or (b) civil wars between ethnic groups in the new nation-state being carved out.

So in retrospect, the Crimea situation was entirely predictable. The USSR was as ethnically fractured as Austria-Hungary, and furthermore was without the market economy that can ameliorate such ethnic differences.

This has become so de rigueur and so embedded that they don't even know they are doing it anymore.
----

Several years ago, we had to sit through a how to do customer service presentation at my crappy part time job. I was sitting with a friend, who, at one point, made a funny, but very rude comment.

He was reported to HR by a girl in another department.

When said friend heard about this, he was in the middle of an emotional melt down, and came to me. When he re-told the story he said I made the very rude comment. I was so shocked, I didn't correct him, since he was on the verge of tears. He was given a talking to and I was never involved, since I didn't do anything.

My point? It's not that liberals ignore these things. Many have deeply disturbing personality disorders that color everything they do.

344 Streep is overrated. Streep has two Best Actress Oscars, which is the same number as Hillary Swank, Jane Fonda and Jodie Foster, all of whom are still living.

How does her two Best Actress Oscars make her the best actress of our time when others have the same?

She does have one Best Supporting Actress from 1979 (Kramer vs. Kramer). I don't think that puts her ahead.

Can anyone name a portrayal of hers that is epic that people can identify and mimic, like Vivian Leigh in GWTW? Or Katherine Hepburn in "On Golden Pond"? Or Elizabeth Taylor in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf"? Have you ever seen someone say "Here is my impression of Streep in Sophie's Choice"? I can bet never.

I think Streep's characters are flat and one dimensional - personalities yearning for meaning in a pathetic and tearful way. Always the same template. Meh. Overrated.

Similar to the way Deniro and Pacino became caricatures.

This "fight" is never going to achieve anything. It won't overturn a single EO or uproot a single law. It's just a fight with no point. These people's time and money (if they actually exist, which I kind of doubt) could be spent on things that could actually come true. Instead, they're going to enrich trial lawyers and waste taxpayer money filing lawsuits that will go nowhere.

367 I've never really doubted the Obama was smart. I just think that he realized that he could get good grades by parroting what teachers told him, and that habit made him intellectually lazy overall.

Sure, I think he's a smart guy. But he was stoned out of his gourd during college and I doubt he put any more work into it than he did his presidency. Could he have gotten good grades? Sure. But I really doubt he did. If he pulled an A average, they would have plastered those things all over creation.

I like that Trump is willing to throw punches, would just prefer if he was better at landing some of them and being more strategic about when to punch.

Sure, I'd like that better too. It would appeal to me if he was smarter and more clever about it.

But would it appeal to the average American in Idiocracy? That's who he's talking to, and who elected him.

Katherine Hepburn was another actress that never impressed me much. She was always Katherine Hepburn but had such a powerful personality she made the roles interesting (kind of like John Wayne).

He is quite good in everything I've seen him in. Very odd looking guy but once he starts going you forget it and he does a great job.

Not super fond of the series, it got worse every new season but it started out terrific and introduced the world to Cumberbund. He's been in a lot of stuff (he was in Amazing Grace for instance) but was always the other guy you never knew about).

436 Step back!

Time to report some new FAKE NEWS form the MSM:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38561883

"Customers at a restaurant in Virginia left their black waitress a racist note instead of a tip, local media report.

Kelly Carter says a couple at the diner in Ashburn had written on the receipt: "Great service -- don't tip black people."

Even from 3,000 miles away, I can instantly tell this is TOTALLY FAKE.

Even IF someone was a KKK member, such a person would NEVER intentionally tell the waitress in a written note that you were a racist. And EVN IF in some crazy universe where you would say that you weren't tipping them because you were a racist, you wouldn't start the note with "Great service! Oh and by the by, although you are great, I am a racist, so I won't tip you."

FAKEFAKEFAKEFAKE but will never be acknowledged as such by the MSM.

The waitress just scribbled that on the receipt herself, guaranteed.

Outside chance that the diners were left-sing activists ginning up an incident.

TV didn't even exist in the commercial marketplace until the late 1930's. The stock market crash happened in 1929. Various inventors were working on TV at the time, and I think some examples had been demonstrated. But TV broadcasting didn't really kick in (and then only in a very few markets) until the latter half of the 1930's.

Almost all news now is meant to sway someone's thinking/acting to a direction that the journalist wants. Writing opinions as if they are facts has become the normal.

This is considered successful when it manages to embed some fantasy version of a real event as conventional wisdom where it will warp the thinking of everyone from then on. So much CW is fantasy based that to counter some arguments requires backing up decades and demolishing a string of CW mythology before confronting the new one.

This fake news is National Enquirer level stuff where there are real things mixed with the lies and opinions. The "fake news" that was run but the left media in recent years has jettisoned truth and now has moved into the "Weekly World News" level of aliens got me preggers.

493 hey Ace
You want "fake news" look at how many media outlets reported Sophia wilansky had her arm blown off by a concussion grade from cops instead of what actually seems to have happened including dan rathers new standard of excellence, teen vogue.
Bobowens at bearing arms and the daily caller have both done stories, but I would like to see a list of how many outlets took the nodapl eco warriors at their word

494 "Macedonian teenagers" are not the only people who write deliberately-false stories in efforts to get clicks and shape US politics.

As being someone of Macedonian heritage, I have only two things to say:

1. I am very proud of my distant connection in humiliating the mainstream media.

2. It doesn't surprise me a bit that Macedonian teenagers would publish fake news stories, make hundreds of thousands of dollars and then laugh about it.

495 Man, what a shame... they coin a term, but it ends up resonating more when we use it (and for good reason).

So, of course it has to go.

496 You mean like "liberal", "cut", and "racist"?

"But though the term hasn't been around long, its meaning already is lost."

'bout time the Right learned to shape the battlespace.
