I like Whistler's nocturne paintings although they aren't my favorites. But he captured the feel of a harbor at night as the water vapor thickens. Looking at this I can feel the moist air with only the slightest hint of a breeze, smell the dense salt aroma and see the hints of light. It is a very quiet, peaceful experience. Don't know if those who haven't lived it would appreciate the scene.
I wonder if part of Whistler's interest in the Nocturne scenes was to experiment with a very limited palette. Posted by: JTB at January 13, 2017 09:47 AM (V+03K) 58

oh school. when I was a kid I hated school. Teachers were always nagging me t do homework and stuff because all I cared about was passing tests.
So yesterday was parent teacher conference for kid the younger. She hates going, so you'd think they yell at her or something. Since she's HS, they get to pick what teacher they want to talk to at conference. She picks one (chem) goes in, teacher asks, "what are you doing here? you're near perfect in my class, I don't know anything you need to work on" (turns out she had an extra credit question for the teacher) So we leave. on the way out, run into her english teacher, who tells us she's doing so great in her class too. I love Whistler's paintings (although he himself seems to have been quite a jerk).
Seeing them on a computer screen really doesn't do them justice. As someone above said, he was experimenting what he could do with a very limited palate. And the painting does evoke London on a cold foggy winter morning. Posted by: Donna and V. (sans ampersands at the present time) at January 13, 2017 10:24 AM (ZM2xo) 192
I've never seen the media try and create a massive protest/meltdown like this before. There is going to be blood on their hands come January 21st. Blue states are going to be burning for days. Walmart hardest hit. A lot of widescreen TVs will find new homes.

Speaking of supporting each other, here is a refection from one of my favorites, Dr. Henry Foster. This is the refection for today from the collection of his writings, "Life Secrets", ****Warning-Long post on faith and prayer******:
The Lord God will furnish us with divine power to do the thing He wants. It may be to comfort some poor soul in distress because of bodily pain or spiritual darkness. By the divine power and illumination of the Holy Spirit resting on us, we may be able to go and say an encouraging word, present some helpful truth, or do something that will break the spell, dissipate the cloud, and give new hope, courage, and cheer to those in despondency or despair. It may be with some bodily help or personal assistance that we can help them. We have something to do at all times for suffering humanity around us. ...While the prayer ascends to God, divine grace and power come down with a blessing for each according to God's plan, purpose and will. We have something to do when we pray, and everybody may do that something. It is not money so much as it is a soul overflowing with love that is needed, a heart ready to help and relieve, ready to pour in comfort, cheer, hope and goodwill upon suffering humanity. My nomination for today's Henry Foster award for comfort and cheer goes to Bluebell-always a bright light of concern, friendliness and compassion here. :^) Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 13, 2017 10:32 AM (tOcW/) 215

Curious and quasi-interesting story for the Horde.
Her Majesty is a Regional Governor and member of the board of directors for our national dog breed club. Recently, the board decided and announced that - to be trivial - as a one-time experiment, the age of eligibility in Sweepstakes classes at the National Specialty would be raised from 18 months to 24 months. From the shouts and screams of some of the membership, you'd think they betrayed national secrets. Madame got a call from another governor yesterday, who said that one member from her region told her never to call or contact her again. So Madame had a look around the Facebook pages of some of the most vociferous opponents of this action. Damn near every one was loudly anti-Trump in their postings. It's like, having lost the election, they have turned their fury on anyone who has displeased them. Posted by: Kodos the Executioner at January 13, 2017 10:33 AM (BWL+E) 219

* * Aside from the looks, she's always been smart about her career. Stanley Kubrick told her during the filming of Eyes Wide Shut that she should go for the character parts, and she has, and has done well with that. She may not be an actress who can "carry" a multi-million-dollar blockbuster; but that doesn't seem to bother her. She may wind up being thought of as an Australian answer to Kate Hepburn. Detroxe is a sugar building block or basically a sugar. Now the liquid Spenda only contains sucralose, which is what makes things very sweet. I switched to that a week ago. Another great product for a sweet tooth is Powerade Zero. It uses Sucralose as a sweetner. One or 2 32 oz bottles to drink a day helps plus it has potassium, calcium, added.
