I buy the True Lemon crystalized lemon powder in the dispenser box at Cash and Carry. The individual packets are good for dumping in a mug of hot water, or what I have taken to doing is putting one into a thermos of barley tea.
I can drink that stuff all day without the risk of coffee jitters and the side effect of speaking at 78 rpm.

The envelopes don't dribble or leak like the liquid concentrate might, it won't freeze, and doesn't turn brown after a week.

117 I've seen this painting before in books and it always appealed to me. The girl is attractive and seems unaffected. The dark background keeps the focus on the subjects: her face and hand and the ermine. Even her dress is simple by the standards of the times and keeps the focus where da Vinci wants it. I assume the ermine has a meaning for the intended audience and it certainly rivets the viewer's attention.

The one discord for me is the size of the girl's hand, which appears a bit too large for the rest of her. Perhaps that has some meaning as well but it seems oddly out of proportion for da Vinci.

If I didn't know who the artist is, I would assume it was one of the Dutch low country painters, even Rembrandt. It has the look to my eyes.

Thanks, CBD and Happy New Year.

Perhaps. They are frankly a reactionary bunch, not really "Progressive". They will bitterly cling to the Legend of Obama for years, as it comforts them to carry his Presidency as a talisman against an uncertain future, where they have lost so much political power as a Party.

If Ellison becomes chair of the DNC, it is unlikely there will be any movement to actually criticize the Obama Presidency, or actually consider his failures.
Interesting that after the years of Terror under Stalin, at least the 20th Communist Party Congress in the USSR had the nerve to criticize what had happened. I don't think the Democrat Party has the courage or integrity of the 20th Communist Party Congress in 1954, to criticize Obama. This is, after all, democracy manifest.

Zuckerbergs wife is a practicing Buddhist, which he has taken interest in. He even said a prayer in front of the Wild Goose Pagoda a Buddhist landmark in Xian, China during a 2015 visit.

Priscilla is Buddhist and asked me to offer a prayer from her as well. Buddhism is an amazing religion and philosophy, and I have been learning more about it over time.

I hope to continue understanding the faith more deeply, he wrote in a post that included a photo of him kneeling in front of the pagoda.

There are a lot of people in the world who actually hate making decisions; this means that they WANT someone to tell them what to do. Then they are able to lead their life without any responsibility-- "I just did what I was told to do." That's why we have cults.

People who like to be told what to do like Big Government. They tell people what to do. So those type of people are attracted to the Democratic party, who will gladly rule over every moment of your life.

By the way, Islam also wants to rule over every moment of your life, from the what you eat to the way you wie your @ss.

Would democrat voters reject the party if it went full on Islam? I don't know. Some *might.* As for the rest, they might embrace having every moment of their life controlled. Right now, it seems like the politicos in Western Europe have embraced Islam and their people are not voting them out of office.

Islam + Democratic party = match made in hell.

356 Zuckerberg and his commie-outside fascist-inside ilk in league with Obama and his attempts to regulate free speech on the Internet have almost destroyed privacy in America. Apparently the entire idea of having parts of your life that are not public are anathema to these assholes.

Prosecuting thoughtcrime is unAmerican. This is why they have created the idea that racism, sexism, and any type of frankly normal human bias is illegal. If we are to save this country, this constant war on the 4th amendment and press to scare Americans into accepting thought regulation has to stop.

Sorry to say that the Bushies started this mess.
You don't need a Patriot Act when you kill every one of the people who commit terrorism. I don't care what you think (although I reserve the right to despise you for it - see? BIAS!) I care what you do!

Here's hoping for some pro-4th Amendment and pro-death penalty judges.

Posted by: bluebell at January 02, 2017 12:19 PM (sBOL1)

417 For the new administration, some ground rules I think to likely understand it:

(1) Steve Bannon is probably the smartest guy in the room. The guy took over Trump's campaign in August and with 1/3 of the money and more bad press than I have ever seen, Donald is going to be sworn in President 18 days from now. Bannon has a pretty interesting philosophy--listen or read his speech at the Vatican conference in 2014.

(2) Trump wants results, not political points. This is probably going to be the biggest shock to the DC system. I don't think Donald cares what side of the aisle he deals with, as long as things get done. He's got 30-40 million people who back him, and who get him. They will follow him if he goes in a more D direction, or in a more R direction, as long as they feel he represents their interests. He's got a long rope from them as well, so the press reports of disaster from day one are going to fall on a lot of deaf ears. That may piss off the more doctrinaire members of both parties, but tough.

(3) The D party as we know it is finished. It is just the Northeast, Pacific Northwest, and California. If Trump governs evenly modestly effectively, the typical R suburban voter, say in the ring counties around Philly, Detroit, or Cincinnati, will firmly move to his camp. Additionally, Jewish voters, who were 30-70 R, are likely to go 50-50 R and perhaps 70-30 R in the future given the Israel disaster than Obama and Kerry have left the D with. Add to that Trump's outreach to the black community (I am surprised nobody has shown the pictures of him winning the NAACP awards in NY a decade ago), and suddenly two big D voting blocs are up for grabs. Who is left for them? Hispanics? Not sure, if as I suspect Bannon comes up with an immigration compromise that the D can swallow (say a wall, restrictions on H1B visas, in return for some form of citizenship path for the alien children still here). Then who is left? D suddenly is the party of Ann Arbor, San Francisco, Madison, and CAIR. Let's see how far that gets them.

422 Northernlurker, I don't see Obama's behavior to have changed a bit in the last month or so. Same as it ever was.

Limbaugh just mentioned what MUST be the core of Trump's immigration "policy" (you'll see why the scare quotes in a second).

Simply enforcing existing law is all the new administration has to do - OK, the only "new" thing will be a serious effort to secure the border, physically and otherwise.

Apart from that, simply enforcing existing laws (most of them on the books for decades, none of them with the slightest legal/judicial vulnerability - "settled law") will, all by itself, be the only "policy" needed.

A distinctive but somewhat separate matter is the lawlessness of state and municipal govts. on this topic. I think those should be addressed with a pincers movement of two initiatives: obviously a $$$$ squeeze, via clear and easy restrictions on federal funding to entities not in compliance with US law; and court/legal attacks (federal pre-emption in this area should be a sufficient hammer to vitiate almost all local and state laws).

One other possibility - which needs informed speculation, something I cannot offer - direct legal action against officials violating federal law against abetting illegal migration.

Bread takes practice. Lots of practice. In culinary school, you will make thousands of loaves of baguette before you get it "right." So don't give up after one go. And make a bread that you like-cinnamon roll dough is very forgiving, because of the high butter and sugar content. Plus the scent of the rolls baking is pretty heavenly.

444 "Compromise" on illegal migration and related lawlessness is insane and indefensible - you don't "compromise" on rule of law. You either enforce, or repeal or amend, laws. It would also be a spectacularly incompetent misreading of the political situation to get involved in any horse trading on this issue.

There is a massive majority in favor of enforcement of immigration law. This extends deeply into otherwise clueless or toxic Dem voting blocs.

Enforce existing laws. Move to secure the border. Not a single congressional vote is needed for most of this, and it will have instant and far-reaching effects.

Just wait, I think we'll get to see this rather obvious prediction confirmed by experience. If Trump and Co. do the right thing, we will see noticeable results before the robins return to Misanthropic Humanitarian's neck of the woods, or whatever we use for seasonal benchmarks around here.

511 Obama administration was at least scandal free!

Heh.

In the past you couldn't steal on the scale, and with the impunity, that you can now.

Here's just one example of what you find when you turn over a rock:

You'll recall that during the Ebola scare, Obama appointed a DC lawyer to be his Ebola Czar. But we already had a Pandemic Czar at CDC, Doctor Nicole Lurie who was responsible for co-ordinating our national response to any and all pandemics. He needed the DC lawyer to divert attention from Lurie because she had become Radioactive for pushing through a $500 million no-bid CDC contract for the development of a small pox vaccine that wasn't needed. The major stockholder of the company that got this contract was Ron Perelman, a billionaire takeover artist and big Obama bundler. No vaccine was ever produced. Andy Stern -- head of the progressive union SEIU -- was on the board and given stock. Literally no "private" individual has visited Obama in the White House more than Andy Stern.

What made Lurie radioactive during the Ebola crisis was that another company had unsuccessfully protested the no-bid contract saying that it could produce a vaccine that was not only good for small pox but other diseases as well -- including Ebola! This company actually created the product, but its supply was in short supply during the crisis. Couldn't let that come to light.

518 I think Leonardo da Vinci has become a name, a brand, and people forget why he is considered one of the greatest of painters.

Just prior to his death, da Vinci said his greatest regret was not devoting more time to painting. He was always being sidetracked by public works projects and engineering commissions of one sort or another. (It should be noted some of those projects were incredibly lucrative and some of those projects were demanded of him by powerful people no sane person would refuse.)

da Vinci only completed 40 major paintings--which is, coincidentally, the same number of paintings known to have been completed by Dutch painter Jan Vermeer.

Given that a "scandal" requires public outrage, and given the MSM's determination to cover up every malfeasance, there is some truth in her assertion that Obama has been scandal-free.

When Nixon just TALKED about using the IRS against political enemies, it was a major scandal. When Obama actually DID it, it was a minor boo-boo immediately forgotten.

Scandal-free and crime-free are not the same thing. The former depends entirely on the media and the populace.

Thus there were scandals in the Bush administration --- but no corresponding crimes. But the many illegal, tyrannical, and corrupt acts of Obama never rose to the level of a scandal.

542 CBD,

I realize I'm very late to this thread but I had to comment. About 20 years ago I was in Poland and had the opportunity to see this painting. I never knew about it and walked into the room of the Museum. There was the painting and one guard that eyeballed me the entire time. I could go up to about a foot away from it and the level of detail is amazing. da Vinci was incredible. The fur of the ermine was so amazing you could see individual strands of fur. The subjects hands had every vein and ligament. It's truly a gift that the painting survived the Nazis. A copy of it does not do it justice. I'm not really "in touch with my feelings" but I truly felt like I was in the presence of greatness.
The only other painting that had an impact like this was Picasso's Guernica. I was shocked by the violence of it. I was only 12 when I saw that one. I don't know if I would feel the same as an adult.
