287 The shtick of Animal House was to be maximal un-PC. Before there was PC.

It owes a lot to the anarchic sensibility of National Lampoon magazine in the early 1970s, which is the fountainhead of ALL the great American comedies of the late 1970s through the 1980s. Even John Hughes started there.

College men need to rediscover Animal House and grow a pair.

After ESB, they edited the title crawl of Star Wars to say Episode IV: A New Hope.

I saw "Why Him?" yesterday with Brian Cranston and James Franco, and while it was funny - stupid, it was also kind of offensive and vulgar. That was the barrier that "Animal House" helped to break down along with "Blazing Saddles". Funny, vulgar, stupid and offensive, all rolled into one.

340 Word is that Lucas showed a rough cut of Star Wars without music to his director friends, who all panned it except for Spielberg. DePalma was especially cruel, and hit on Carrie Fisher including the Danishes in her hair.

A lot of changes got made to Lucas' original script by others, without which it would have sucked. Lucas' then wife was the editor, and word is that she had a bigger hand in the first movie than George. Lawrence Kasdan wrote V and VI, and had a big hand in rewriting IV. Then there's the John Williams score.

Goes a way to explaining how Lucas was really a one hit wonder.

342 So all the way back at the beginning Lucas was planning those horrible prequels?

Stories vary. I assume he had vague ideas for backstory events/ prequels way back when, but nothing formalized. Empire went through so many script revisions-- Lando was for a while, gonna be a clone, and maybe the leader of a colony of clones. Supposedly Jedi was condensed from two or three theoretical movies, but Lucas didn't plan or pace well.

This idea that Lucas had anything planned out from Day One is total BS. He had ideas, but nothing concrete until the actual script for each movie. I guess he got boxed in by the time he was done with E2.

The other unanswered question is to what extent The Force Awakens resembles any of the post-RotJ plot he supposedly gave Disney when he sold it.

Most of The Clone Wars (CGI) is good. The earlier Clone Wars (cel) is over-the-top and entertaining. The 80's series, Droids and Ewoks, were 80's Saturday morning cartoons, so...

The new show, Rebels, is good from what I've seen. But if you're not a Star Wars fan already, stick to the movies or ignore it all entirely.

375 So all the way back at the beginning Lucas was planning those horrible prequels?

No, not even remotely. When he put out Star Wars, it was little more than a vague concept. He wanted to do one of those old serial style movies (a concept which he and Spielberg later reused for Indiana Jones) in space, which included elements of all three films. In the process of filming, he kept writing and changing because it was not going to possibly fit the whole tale in one movie. By the end, he had a product he liked a lot, and hoped it would sell, but still no real plans to make more movies.

Then the film was a massive, inconceivably huge success, far beyond anything he or the studios had hoped for in their widlest coked up dreams. And so Lucas pulled out the skeleton of an outline he had for the movie but couldn't fit in, and began building the rest of the films on that. But wisely he pulled in one of the best writers in Hollywood to make it work, and other directors to make the movies.

The only reason the film was "part IV" was to give it the feel of those old serials not because he always had it planned out in 9 parts or whatever. That came later, but as Lucas lies a lot and likes to retrofix everything, he started to act like it was all part of this grand plan. The dude couldn't even remember Jar-Jar Binks' name while he was filming "The Phantom Menace" for crying out loud.

He's a terrific idea guy with a great visual style, but a horrible storyteller with no skill whatsoever in writing dialog or characters. He's a decent director but better off with set design etc.
