The Morning Report 12/27/16

Good morning, kids. Things seem to be slowing down as 2016 ends. But there are a few items of note. First, one of the clearest conservative voices of reason and sanity, the great Thomas Sowell, is retiring at the age of 86. As for Lena Dunham, gevalt. You'll have to look up "Coney Island Whitefish" for yourself if you don't know the reference. Kudos to Oleg Atbashian at The People's Cube for the absolutely perfect symbol for today's SJW droogs. Lastly, below the fold, one of my holiday favorites, circa 1974; National Lampoon Radio Hour's (remember that?) "Kung Fu Christmas" featuring Bill Murray and Gilda Radner. The lyrics are hysterical. Have a better one and remain blessed.

With the British royal family, the rule was basically any Protestant prince or princess who wasn't actually foaming-at-the-mouth crazy. They did not have to be closely related, although it was the custom to look for a suitable bride or husband among the close cousins.

It was the Hapsburg and, especially, the Spanish royals who more or less destroyed themselves through inbreeding, marriages to first cousins and uncles predominating.

I have to disagree. I think the people had finally had their fill of him and his crap. He lost a lot of support from blacks in his second election in those critical tossup States and narrowly eked out a win in most of them. But he did lose NC and a few more. I think he would have done just as bad a Scankles if he had run again.

Yes, he would probably had won the "popular vote" because of NY and CA, but he would have lost the electoral vote.

Believe it or not, also a lot of Jewish families up until the end of the war. Not uncommon to marry second or third cousins, and hence, you got a lot of genetic disorders like Tay Sachs disease which is still a problem with the Orthodox/Chassidic communities.

This was the third church built on this site. The church was taken over by the muzzie death cult when they conquered Constantinople in 1453 and converted it to a muzzie death cult mosque. It is owned by the Turks now and is a museum.

H.A. Goodman. He's a YouTube journo - waay left, but he's actually a pretty reasonable sort and it is entertaining as hell to watch him as he observes the corruption eruption, and the insanity oozing out of the left side of the political spectrum.

He, I think, epitomizes the leftist Jew. His leftism is so much a part of him that he refuses - all the time he is describing the decay of the left - to even consider that he isn't part of that putrid ideology.

He's actually great at observing and describing the river of dreck that is leftist America.

He's pretty prolific and like I said, it is eminently entertaining to watch his (for lack of a better word) struggle. Plus - he's not a bad guy.

Chuck is also an ignoramus. All religions follow the same destination -- to value and respect the other person and accept their right to live peacefully and worship God as they choose? What complete and utter nonsense.

The koran explicitly teaches muzzies that they are superior to all other religious adherents. It also teaches muzzies that they have a duty to subjugate and kill non-muzzies. It also demands that non-muzzies must pay muzzies a tribute in order to be allowed to live in peace.

IOW, the "destination" of islam is the exact opposite of what Chuckie the Ignorant claims it is.

How is this douche allowed to get away with saying such demonstrably false crap without being called out on it, especially in view of what is going on across Europe? It was this kind of self-deluded, wishful thinking about islam that led Merkel to throw open Germany's borders to hordes of muslim invaders -- with predictable results.

When are people going to wake up and see islam for what it is? A dangerous and violent supremacist ideology that is completely incompatible with western notions of "tolerance" and "diversity."

Muslims are not invading western nations because they love "diversity" or "democracy" or because they want to demonstrate how "tolerant" they are of other faiths; no, they're coming because they want to establish a worldwide muzzie caliphate -- in which non-muzzies (those who are not killed) are treated as second-class citizens and forced to pay tributes to muzzies in order to be left alone.

And idiots like Merkel and England's Chuckie are rolling out the red carpet for their muzzie conquerors. Because they see islam as they wish it was, rather than how it really is.

But for the Communists hidden in Roosevelt's administration, the UN would have been an organization solely of democratic and freedom-loving nations.

Once they admitted the Soviets (who were given three votes in the GA to our one vote) and their satellites, the UN was destined to become the tool of communists and other banana republic corruptocrats.

105 Trump vs. Obama 2016 would have been epic.

Obama would have gotten better turnout from his coalition, but it mostly would have piled up votes in states already Deep Blue.

In swing states there'd have been Obama fatigue (which Trump would hit on) but more enthusiastic voter fraud. NC would probably have flipped. Compared with his 306 EVs against Hillary, Trump could have lost NC and any one of PA, MI and WI and still won.

Trump in 2016 got the Full Monty from MSM -- Romney didn't in 2012. That was the real October Surprise.

Is Obama saying he would have won a simple diss of Hillary, or part of a plan to run the D party post-POTUS? I hope he hangs around. There's a fee more states the Ds can lose in 2020, and Senate seats in 2018.

Kodos, did you ever read Frederic Morton's A Nervous Splendor: Vienna 1888-1889? It's a survey of the city and it's people during the year, but the real protagonist of the story is Rudolf, whom Morton portrays as a devoted liberal who might have, had he not killed himself at Mayerling, prevented WWI:

http://tinyurl.com/zt2f4ob

Morton also penned a sequel, Thunder at Twilight: Vienna 1913-1914, which is not so good and, predictably, posits that had Franz Ferdinand not been killed, he might have prevented the Great War:

121 Anybody read that story about the family that got stuck in the snow on a closed forest road in Utah, on the way to the Grand Canyon? The mother, a college professor with wilderness and survival training, got out of the car to go for help. She was going to walk 10 miles to the main road. She got to the road, but it was closed, so she decided to walk another 14 miles to the entrance of the park.

She walked for hours, ran out of food and water, and started hallucinating. She ate pine twigs and drank her own urine (says she didn't use the snow for hydration, because she knew it would increase her chances of hypothermia).

Meanwhile, back at the car, the husband (who has spent the night in the car with his son), sees the wife isn't back, so he gets out of the car and hikes up to higher ground, where he gets cell phone reception and calls for help.

The woman was rescued, but she has serious frostbite injuries to her hands.

Moral of the story: don't ever trust a college professor. They are just too damn stupid.

Vic, I subscribed to National Geographic and others for many years although it's been a while since I renewed them. As they became more libtard, politically oriented I dropped them, partly because they got away from their purpose and partly because they increasingly pissed me off.

It's no accident that these days my magazine reading is mostly Backwoodsman, Fly Tyer, Muzzleloader, Fur-Fish-Game, Woodcarving Illustrated, even Birds and Blooms (beautiful photography and useful information).

Magazines I grew up with like Time, Newsweek, Atlantic and others have become such left wing POS I'm surprised they even still exist.

However, one of the things that does come up is me usually saying: You seem to think all of this (gesturing to everything around us) is both eternal and an accident. All of this freedom and advancement is really not common in human history.

Liberals seem to think that they will be able to remove all of the things that made western culture and america especially unique and yet things will be essentially remain the same. I keep trying to tell them that it will not work out the way they think it will.

She was wearing a parka and a knit cap, and she barely survived the exposure to the cold weather (she had passed out and had to be taken to ICU for her injuries). If the husband had not called rescuers and they had not found her when they did, she would have died.

Driving to the Grand Canyon through Utah in wintertime without appropriate clothing is like driving though the AZ desert in the summertime without any spare water. It's just stupid. Your car could break down, you could get lost, all sorts of things could happen, and you need to be prepared. They were not prepared, and then when they got stuck, she did the stupidest thing she could, which was get out (in her inadequate clothing) and walk miles away from the car. She's very lucky she's not dead now.

Living around the ocean most of my life, I have witnessed a continual parade of stupid. We had a father/son team from Australia last winter who bought a used sailboat off eBay, heavily used including delimitation of the hull with old and tattered sails and a barely running diesel, who then set off on a trip back to Australia. In February when the forecast was for a major storm.

My buddy, who had done some minor work on the boat actually called the Coasties to try and stop them but they had no legal means to prevent them. They pulled them over and strongly warned them against continuing but off they went.

Made it as far as Martha's Vineyard before the Coasties had to pluck them out of the ocean with a copter after the sails ripped and the engine failed.

I've come to believe that most people are morons and not the good kind.

Disagree. If you mock Lena it's because it makes you feel superior, which is a bad motivation. Mocking her gives her attention, which she craves. It also creates sympathy, which is why she has supporters.

You're (we are) way too used to the politician way of doing things--not the businessman way.

A politician has to spend political capital to accomplish major goals;
easily distracted by his enemies rushing from one fire/crisis to the next.

Trump is the CEO.

A CEO hires the guy and says, "you do this and this and this and I'll see you on Monday at 9AM--if it's not done, you're fired."

That's why I keep going back to that request for information to the DOE. If you read that guy who went through the whole thing, it basically told you that Trump already has his plan and he already has people who know what he wants and are willing and able to get it done.

And they already know exactly where to get started.

The media and the Dems are trying the tactic they used to bottle up previous Republicans--the stray voltage.

Trump has already laid a trap and a counter-attack. They are going to be so busy the next 6 months, running crazy, hair-on-fire screaming from one Trump outrage to the next.

And the Trump Train will roll on right on schedule.

188 Among the provisions of this new Ministry of Truth department is they can give out grants for 'training journalists'. So it's a short walk from there to defining journalists, and by that I mean licensing requirements. Ace won't qualify, but Brian Williams will.

Oh, I don't think we'll see the abuses and overreach right away. But down the road, the Dems will be back in charge, and that's when the real abuses will begin. But Rs aren't immune to abusing powers either.

The RICO Act was designed to both criminally and financially damage outfits like The Mob and other gangs that were damn near untouchable otherwise. But over time, provisions of RICO were co-opted to take down fishermen, and for local LE to seize anything under civil forfeiture.

I did a stupid thing about 4 years ago in Nevada. I was driving around Ely and decided to take a dirt road south (this was in December) I was driving a rented Honda Civic). Started out okay, just a muddy road. Gets dark early so decided to go up to the main road. Every road I took ended in heavy snow. So I tried one, and never got stuck, but saw a few hunters in their heavy SUV,s. They must have thought what the hell is this guy doing, driving on a dirt road in the snow with that car. Almost dark and I finally found a road that was far enough south and elevation to get to the main road (SR(93). All of the road weren't taken care of, and I tried several roads and had to turn around. That little car kept going, and I had to wash the hell out it, before returning it in Las Vegas...(engine compartment was full of mud) And I'm not a novice to bad roads, just not prepared for this.

Obama is proof that the past of a president is important. Most people who went through what he went through are not going to come out as very stable. Someone who has had a mother and father who deserted him, been raised for a time by a step father in a foreign country, and then been raised by grandparents who don't look like him is going to mess a person up.

281 Did anybody see Mike Rowe on Carlson's show last night? He was talking about how companies can't hire welders fast enough and brought up the case of a 24 year welder he knows in North Dakota who is pulling in $140,000 a year. No student loan debt because he has an associate degree from a community college.

And yet there are baristas with worthless Womyn's Studies degrees who are in $250,000 in debt who would consider that young man a "deplorable" and far beneath them.

I think it was Rowe who said Trump was the choice of people who shower after work, not before.

That stinks. I can only imagine what you're dealing with right now. My mom fell and broke her hip a couple of years ago and was in rehab for a couple of months. We had half a dozen places that made ketchup, each with a different recipe. Everybody had a favorite. Now we grow more tomatoes than ever, and they all go to Heinz. One great local canner makes specialty sauces of several kinds, but they don't even venture into ketchup anymore. No sense trying.

The Granite State factory was a small, tumbledown shack where you walked in and bought your fresh chips, either in a bag, a large box or a plastic pail. I loved that, above the weatherbeaten counter, there was a framed photo of Ike tearing into a bag of their chips.

About 15 or so years ago, the fellow who owned the place told me he was closing; he was too old to run the factory and his kids didn't want the business. I had no real money to invest and no business plan, but I wish I could go back in time and dope-slap myself to by the recipe, if nothing else. I don't know that I would have been happy as a potato chip mogul, but I'd certainly have been happier than I am now.

The building sat on yuuuugely prime real estate, so I'm sure the owner sold out for mucho bux.

Even though it is easy to make fun of the "artisanal food" craze as a faddish thing for twee hipsters, I have to admit, it is nice to go to a farmers market or WF and see all sorts of specialty cheeses which are not brick or cheddar or Swiss made by Wisconsin farmers - bleu cheeses, Camembert and Brie-type cheeses, cheese favored with dried fruits or herbs. Even though they're certainly pricier than Kraft slices, they're cheaper than imported French cheese and just as tasty.

Same thing with local breweries. Every town and state now has their own local breweries which produce beer that is much, much better than Bud or Miller.

So perhaps other products, like ketchup, will follow suit and local options will become available along with the mass produced stuff.

So I popped 'round and asked him about putting a certain amount, let's say enough to buy a lower-middle class house, in something that was safe and would yield me an annual income. Didn't even specify how much income.
And he looked at me like a deer must look into UFO lights. He had no concept of what that was. Kind of sneered and said "You don't really have enough there to bother investing, for major growth. And you're starting late." I tried a couple of times to explain that this was not to be my savings plan for the future, these were my savings for the future, and I was not looking for aggressive growth, just earnings to match what I'd withdraw. No comprende. And though that one guy is no longer with the firm, there does seem to be a lot of that going around. "Investments?" = fastbucks.

Unless you really know what you're doing, it's best to use a well-established brokerage. I've used Vanguard for a number of years with great success, and I find the fees very reasonable. (I'm sure they're all pretty similar--Fidelity, Prudential, etc.)

You don't have to have a 20-something agent. Just go to the website and there you can answer questions such as how many years until your retirement, the amount of risk you are willing to take, etc. It will pop out a plan that meets your requirements. Of course, the closer you get to retirement, the more conservative your investments will become. If you like, you can also opt for a "managed plan" for an additional fee, of course.

Thanks for alerting me to this. A rather interesting case. Sure does seem to be a deprivation of property without due process.

343 I think it was Rowe who said Trump was the choice of people who shower after work, not before.

Rowe is right. However, a lot of the rural communities need to get their act together. The need to get back to church and get that Christian work ethic back. It's going to be a long trek back.

351 So perhaps other products, like ketchup, will follow
suit and local options will become available along with the mass
produced stuff.

there are some local companies that do ketchup, from small batches at the farmers markets, to "Portland Ketchup" that you buy at Costco

I haven't tried it because I haven't liked ketchup since I was 10, but I am sure it tastes wonderful.

It was the Hapsburg and, especially, the Spanish royals who more or less destroyed themselves through inbreeding, marriages to first cousins and uncles predominating.

La Infanta Juana was the source of most of their problems. When she was mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, depending on which side of the family you were looking at.

355 Big companies ( Conoco, Caterpillar etc ) pay quarterly dividends that are around 3-4%. Not sure which ones right now but the big outfits aren't likely to have a lot of stock price movement but they throw off dividends routinely.
