Monday Overnight Open Thread (12/26/16)

I was born white, which now, whether I like it or not, makes me a racist.

I am a fiscal and moral conservative, which by today’s standards, makes me a fascist.

I am heterosexual, which according to gay folks, now makes me a homophobe.

I am non-union, which makes me a traitor to the working class and an ally of big business.

I am a Christian, which now labels me as an infidel.

I believe in the 2nd Amendment, which now makes me a member of the vast gun lobby.

I am retired, which makes me useless.

I think and I reason, therefore I doubt much that the main stream media tells me, which must make me a reactionary.

I am proud of my heritage and our inclusive American culture, which makes me a xenophobe.

I value my safety and that of my family and I appreciate the police and the legal system, which makes me a right-wing extremist.

I believe in hard work, fair play, and fair compensation according to each individual's merits, which today makes me an anti-socialist.

I (and most of the folks I know), acquired a fair education without student loans (it’s called work) and no debt at graduation, which makes me some kind of an odd underachiever.

I believe in the defense and protection of the homeland for and by all citizens, which now makes me a militant.

Now, a sick old woman is calling me and my friends a basket of deplorables.

Please help me come to terms with the new me…because I‘m just not sure who I am anymore! I would like to thank all my friends for sticking with me through these abrupt, new found changes in my life and my thinking! .....I just can’t imagine or understand what happened to me so quickly!

Funny…it’s all just taken place over the last 7 1/2 years!

As if all this B.S. wasn’t enough to deal with….now I'm not sure which public restroom to use.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“No man is poor who has a Godly mother.”
― Abraham Lincoln

― George Washington

Quote III

I don't know what it is about food your mother makes for you, especially when it's something that anyone can make - pancakes, meat loaf, tuna salad - but it carries a certain taste of memory.”
― Mitch Albom

Quote IV

“God know that a mother need fortitude and courage and tolerance and flexibility and patience and firmness and nearly every other brave aspect of the human soul.”
― Phyllis McGinley

Maryland church faces dilemma. Do they continue outreach to the homeless or face a stiff fine?

.........Rev. Grover has allowed homeless people in the Baltimore, MD area to sleep outside of her church on benches and concrete slabs. She said she feels like the church should, at the very least, let homeless people have access to a bench to sleep on.

However, her kindness is not appreciated by the church’s business neighbor Charles Bartko. The Shore Produce and Seafood owner spoke to Fox Baltimore and confessed to complaining about the homeless because they “poured urine on his tree” and caused it to die. He also claimed to see a topless woman and defecation all over the place. His complaints reached Ellen Kobler, a deputy director in Baltimore County’s Office of Communications, and she agrees with him.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. I spent the weekend spoiling the grandkids, and my phone won't let me post here for some reason, so my greetings are necessarily tardy.

37 Love feeding the birds. We're rural, so we get lots of interesting sorts over the year.

Right now, we have nuthatches and red-bellied woodpeckers, as well as downy. Jays and cardinals. Kinglets and goldfinches and chickadees. Killdeer and juncos. Bluebirds. Plenty or sparrows, all sorts. Wrens. Eagles, hawks and kestrels stop by in our high trees. We also a Cooper's hawk who roosts in one of our apple trees. He picks his choice of breakfast daily and sits on our gate to eat it.

51 Infidel, here are the eggnog recipes.

Here's the recipe that actually cooks the eggs:

In a large pan,
whisk 6 eggs plus 2 egg yolks and 1/2 cup plus 2 T sugar with 1/4 tsp
salt until blended. Keep whisking as you slowly add 4 cups of whole
milk. Place the pan on the stove's burner and turn it to the lowest
possible setting. Continuously whisk for 25-30 minutes until the mixture
reaches 160F and will coat the underside of a spoon.

Strain this
into a large bowl to remove any pieces of cooked egg. Now stir in 1 cup
bourbon, 1 T vanilla extract, and 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg. Transfer to a
covered container and refrigerate the mixture for at least 4 hours.

When ready to serve, whip 3/4 c heavy cream, and fold it into the mixture.

14 servings.

---------------------------------

BEST EGGNOG, IMHO

I have another raw egg recipe, more complex. This one uses a dozen eggs,
separated. You beat the yolks with 1 1/2 cups sugar for 10 minutes,
then slowly add 2 cups of bourbon and 3/4 cups brandy. I think the
alcohol will kill anything! You chill that for at least 6 hours, or
until 30 minutes before you want to serve. Transfer it to a very large
bowl where you can mix everything together at the end. Now add 6 cups
milk and 2 tsp ground or grated nutmeg to the yolks and stir.

In a
separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form (do this
first since you can't have any traces of fat on the beaters for the egg
whites, or they won't peak). In a third bowl, beat 2 cups heavy cream
until you get stiff peaks.

Fold the whites into the yolk mixture, then fold in the whipped cream for the final production.

-------------------

Widow (or bachelor) quick eggnog:

6 eggs, 3 cups of
milk, 8 T sugar, 3 tsp vanilla extract. Preferably using a mixer, beat
the eggs, then alternate adding milk and sugar. When it thickens
slightly, add the vanilla and whatever spice you're using. I happen to
have whole nutmegs. Use 1/2 tsp freshly grated

Now
chill thoroughly. Says here at least 3 hours in the fridge, but I'd put
it in the freezer to speed it up.

I used brown sugar to compensate for only having white rum.

81 Lost my Mom in Sept - she was in her late 80's so it was a good run - what I wouldn't give for her dried out roast beef and noodles cooked to mush. She couldn't cook worth a damn but poured all her love into it.
Posted by: Tonypete

My mom was a good cook. But we had neighbors whose mom cooked beef by boiling it. Not kidding, she really cooked it that way.

My mom on the other hand made pot roast by browning it on the stove that finishing it off in the oven. The potatoes and carrots were caramelized and the beef was tender and juicy.

83 The people that I run into from non-Chic Fil a states love it. When one opens thus are not ashamed to admit that they will wait in line for 20 plus minutes to get it.

I grew up on it in the south. Our mall had a Chic Fil a in the food court and that was one of my earliest memories about food. They had somebody with a tray handing out free nuggets and as you know, it is impossible to have just one.

86 Another great ONT with lots of juicy content, MisHum!!! Even got me to bite on a video during the "bounce links" phase.

I'd have to disagree with QOTD III, however -- or, maybe, agree with the quote's words while 180 degrees different from its spirit. My mom's talent for taking wholesome, tasty ingredients and making attractive, tasty food from them rivals that of an industrial concrete mixer. Once I had escaped from the elementary school lunch program, dorm food, and my mom's cooking [the worst of the three], I kept on going and never looked back.

The fiancee once noted that I never "allowed her" to dine at my mom's table. Over the years, she realized that I'd been protecting her.

Now, off to chase links!!!!

161 furnace update...

Turned it off so it didn't fuck itself overnight cycling and not heating.

the tech showed up, and I turned it back on this morning (natural gas)

anyway worked with no issues.

The mother board was not throwing any error codes and the tech thought that it was an overcycling issue

so no idea

kinda like when you take the car to a mechanic and there are no more car issues....

Totally agree on staffing. Even if I'm doing take-out (I don't do drive-through), I feel better about humanity after having interacted with their employees. If you thank them, they don't cough up a perfunctory "you're welcome" -- they say "it was my pleasure" and seem to mean it.

Unfortunately, this tends to last about 20 seconds after you pull out of their driveway and some asshole cuts you off in traffic.

There is nothing that you have said here to indicate you're not a good person and in fact the opposite. Except for people who get drunk and abusive on here and some strange trolls, I don't think anyone here is not a good person and sometimes the drunk and abusive people are just that way because they're dealing with too many problems and are having a bad day and of course if they are alcoholics that never really helps anything.

Just saw my Grandmother for what will likely be the last time. Doctors are surprised she's lasted so long. She sleeps 22 hrs a day and can now only respond with her eyes, though she doesn't recognize her own children, though they can sorta communicate when they use her first languge.

Still, I can vouch for In-n-Out, especially when it's done "Animal Style".

Best burger place that I've been to, though, is a little burger shack in Westwood, Calif. It was right next to a sandwich shop locally known as "buck fifty", though inflation has probably changed that since I've been there..

A much better candidate for most popular fast food place in Utah than In-n-Out would be Taco Time. Every little town has at least one. Better than del Tacoburger, but similar sort of stuff.

The Taco Time crisp bean and crisp meat burritos are convenient when you're driving. I call them beansicles and meatsicles, respectively.

(I need a bird-cam, to get still shots!) Certainly American Goldfinches (gone for the winter) and House Finches. The rest seem to be some members of the "streaked sparrows" group. Might be a few Dark-Eyed Juncoes feeding on the ground (along with mourning doves & squirrels). Twice recently, I've heard a Great Horned Owl's call out back; and we've seen a hawk swoop by once in a while. Once in the past I saw a hen pheasant wandering through the backyard. We do delight in having California Quail nearby - they live at the far back edge of the property. We saw them gleaning seed under the front feeder, just once - we see them more often in the summer, when they run around in the back paddock.

409 A couple of pics taken at the Veterans Rescue Quarters, where I worked yesterday, serving Christmas dinner. These are only of half of the room. We probably served 200 Christmas meals.

The people you see are just a couple of the volunteers. We have a STRICT policy of not taking any pictures of the Vets.

It was my lot to work the desert table, which was overwhelmed with pies, cakes, cobblers, cupcakes, etc.

Not a single one of those guys took anything without saying "Thank You".

There was one big, grizzled old black guy who looked at me and said, "What?! No figgy pudding?". Laughed our collective asses off we did.

Great guys, but mostly VN, and getting old.

Sorry I'm late. Just flew in from big D, and boy are my arms tired.

No seriously, I must really have some GAINZZZ after tonight. I had a lot to clap for. Sure our D looked pretty sketchy early on. Sure Tyron Smith took a shot on his knee, and we can't afford to lose him. Sure I left my star rookie QB and RB in too long in a meaningless game, but damn that game sure was fun.

Well, probably see plenty of ol' Romo next game. Plenty of time to polish off our playoff killing prowess.

414 Burgerville is really, really good. Its local, it has fresh ingredients they change seasonally from the local goodies (like blackberry milkshakes and the aforementioned Walla Walla Sweet Onion Rings. The prices are decent, and the food is always good.

Only problem: Salem's idiotic government pissed off the owner so much he won't open a franchise here. He had one, right on a great corner, always busy. Then they decided they were going to widen the street, no problem. But they told him he had to take the Burgerville out to do so. He fought them, he lost. They ripped it down, widened the street not touching the property and it sat there empty...

Oh wait, its still freaking empty over two decades later.

417 That is great SMHF. You might need to call any # they have, go up the supervisor chain and spell it out for someone high up. Flunkies might try to just ignore the problem. I hate when this kind of thing happens. I will go to paypal and say "give me back my money so I can get it to the person I wanted it to go to, rather than letting indiegogo rip me off" if they don't make things square. I had to do something like that once with some ebay "donate proceeds of a sale to your charity" deal years ago.

(we can set up a PO box in your city and send checks if it comes to that), but hopefully the right ears or eyes at indiegogo will sense the anger and icy resolve and make things right quickly.

421 Say the word, SMFH, and I'll send Indiegogo the following:

"Lisa has a wide circle of friends. At our urging, she set up a site with you (Indiegogo) so that she could quickly raise money to take care of cremation and interment expenses, notify those who should be notified, and cover the loose ends one gathers sitting in an ICU while a loved-one struggles to the end.

We accepted that Indiegogo was a profit-making enterprise because it appeared to provide worthwhile organization, hasten the logistics, and -- through the generosity.com branch -- it was priced attractively [compared to, say, Western Union].

Well, it hasn't been that well organized, I've been deluged with spam, you've provided unreasonable delays, and your "cut of the action" is currently 100% -- as our contributions are spoken for while Lisa hasn't received the money.

You are poisoning your brand. I could have mailed her a check and she would have had it before Christmas -- and, now, I wish I had. I was the first contributor on her generosity.com campaign because I thought Indiegogo was worthy of trust. Now, I wouldn't trust you schmucks with a burnt match.

Release the funds within the next 24 hours or let me know that I should consider involvement with Indiegogo to be prima facie evidence of fraud -- not by those who have campaigns, but at the corporate level. I'll then mail her a check, as I wish I'd done before, and pursue whatever remedies I may have against your organization."

Sort of.

My recipe for Wassail:

Take 5 bottles of brown ale, half a bottle of Madeira, a sliced blood orange and a spice pouch containing whole cloves, whole allspice, crystallized ginger, and cinnamon soaked in bitters, and heat in a crock pot.

Bake 4 cored apples/pears filled with brown sugar, honey, and the sixth bottle of brown ale for 30 minutes at 350 degrees F. Thereafter combine with the contents of the crock pot. Let meld for at least half an hour.

Enjoy!

445 Finding a gem of a little restaurant is like finding treasure, especially on the road. Of all places, we found a barbecue place in Seattle called the Steel Pig. Amazing food, just unbelievable, run by this super nice family, one of them painted these super cool New Orleans themed paintings I wish I could have afforded to buy. You never know, but once you find one, its a gem. And usually they don't look like much.

Sometimes you can tell. There was a place called Mo's in Lincoln City on the coast of Oregon, had the most amazing seafood. But it was a little place with a counter you ordered from, no seating. Always a big line.

Then they got a nice new place at a wonderful location and, I dunno they changed the menu or something, its not nearly as good now. Beautiful views though.

467 Perils of trying to help the homeless:

In our little town, "the homeless" have destroyed several restrooms in a local park. Think it's the drug addict set among the homeless that did it.

Our local food bank, run by an efficient Seventh Day Adventist volunteer, tried to set up a bathroom and shower for them but they trashed that, too.

They were sleeping in the shrubbery surrounding the park with the vandalized restrooms. Ran afoul of environmentalists because the shrubbery was a bird habitat. That claim got results.

We help a particular homeless guy almost every day, but then, we know him. Binge alcoholic who smokes, could start a fire when drunk. Thus homeless. Otherwise, a nice guy. Completely illiterate. Was a hard worker in his day.

479 WHen I worked at a downtown convenience store there were a lot of homeless and super poor crashing at the local dive apartment who would come in. I always tried to treat them with respect and give them a break when I could. They would bring in cans and bottles and stuff, buy food there with food stamps (horrible idea, it was marked up to the moon and I think some of it was stocked when the store opened).

But they were homeless for a reason none were the "I lost my house in the stock market" kind. They were addicts and alcoholics and crazy and the guys the cops would catch over and over, get 6 month sentences and bounce back out. Even the really nice older guy who never said a word and was sweet and sad, he tried to cheat on bottle returns. The teenage guy that was a nice kid tried to steal cigarettes. I had to throw one guy out permanently because he dressed like a nazi and would copy this lunatic nazi stuff on the photocopier and it just was freaking out other customers.

I tried to be good to them all, because of Christian charity and because their lives are crappy enough but I learned that the sad faces you see on TV are at least sometimes there because of their own stupidity and choices.

All the more reason to do so, then. Manipulate them to work to your ends, prod them to serve you by their means.

They are the enemy, and you should employ distraction and avarice in order to cause them to become a tool in your hands.

Do the whole SunTzu thing, get 'em to charge at the flanks or fronts of YOUR choosing.

USE the "grieving widow" angle, the "fraud" angle, and even the very Media Ready, SJW friendly, "profile" of the (to their small minds) "blend" of you and Carl.

USE your distinguished Military Record.

USE selected emails and AoS comments, as well as comments attached to IGG donations, for the TV to edit into the story.

USE the whole "Tear-Jerker" of this, to get the story AIRED, and be sure to capture every version of they may use, from the noon, four, five six and ten o clock broadcasts.

Same with any coverage from their website.

USE their reporters to contact IGG, and force IGG to respond to, or ignore, valid "media inquiries."

It all goes with yours and Cooth's WAR letters.

Just use the media like the whores they are.

When you're done with 'em, wad 'em up and leave 'em crying on the cutting room floor.

No need to leave a $20, either. Not like they're offering you a happy ending, y'know.

Then, use all that across the entire 'web, and hammer on IGG like they deserve, and then some. Then hammer them some more. And again.

571 I have waited patiently, for years, for an In-n-Out Burger to come to my town. It has been 16 years since I left California, and that is the only thing, other than dear friends, that I really miss. Well, I guess I miss Tahoe too, but the Chick-fil-A helps me forget that. I haven't found anything to take away my craving for a yummy In-n-Out though.

Posted by: goon at December 27, 2016 01:10 AM (EaQ6/)

572 I'd completely avoid the Strip when I'm in Las Vegas but the reason I'm typically in town is to work at events nearly always in a big resort ballroom. We have a light load at CES this year, just a single one night press event called Showstoppers. At the rate our services are being covered by the hotels themselves (it only took them about 16 years to figure it out) I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't any work at the 2018 CES. I used to go to CES as an attendee but it just doesn't have the same appeal anymore. It used to be I'd have a 2-3 month lead on the info before it appeared in magazines but now it's all real-time on the web.

Still, I've spent enough time in LV to know where just about everything I need is to be found if I became a resident.

In-N-Out only uses buns from a single bakery in SoCal within 24 hours of them coming out of the oven. They fly them to every In-N-Out location.

That's one reason they haven't been able to expand eastward.

There's nothing specific in Delaware law that protects against takeovers. The special court system that they have for adjudicated corporate law issues with judges that work on only on those particular types of cases rather than having to rotate into all the other areas of law every few months is why the big corporations Incorporated Delaware. And of course because of all of this, all of the best corporate lawyers are either in Delaware or very close by in New York and Boston.

639 Busily sorting screws and nails, and other miscellaneous hardware items. Must have gone through better than 5 pounds already. Phillips-head wood and drywall screws, which I have an awful lot of, I sort by length. Other screws, and nails are getting sorted more or less by category.

And I got the fourth bearing for the wounded Harbor Freight table saw at NAPA, along with a puller to withdraw the drive-end bearing from the armature. All new bearings installed and motor reassembled. The commutator-end bearing had seized and wallowed out the plastic end bell, so the motor is sitting in the vise overnight to let the epoxy putty I used to seat the new commutator-end bearing to set up and become really hard. Motor turns, and I am pretty sure it will work. How long, is anybody's guess.

658 I am non-union, which makes me a traitor to the working class and an ally of big business.

Unions themselves are more traitorous. Any gains they get are at the expense in the ultimate cost of finished goods from their business or industry to all non-union consumers. Likewise they're behind any number of initiatives that remove competition from the marketplace both in industry and labor. Now with cheep shipping and transport they're even more ineffectual - which is why the biggest remaining unions are in industry which can't be exported.

Posted by: redc1c4 at December 27, 2016 03:01 AM (H/IO6)

669 There! Hardware sort completed for now. Wood screws are sorted well, other screws and nails more of a first-order sort.

If I need a roofing nail, or an inch-and-a-quarter wood screw, I can grab them from their respective containers.

I use a lot of wood screws here, so a detailed sort by length was worthwhile. Use many fewer nails, so simply having a box marked "assorted nails" works for now.

Probably "earned" ten bucks an hour for doing this, given the price of new screws and nails.

Oh yeah. All the old screws I sorted were Phillips head, #2, maybe a very few #3. Most of the new screws I buy are Robertson head, because they work better. If I'm going to build a whole new wall, I will use the Robertson. But if I am just fitting one or two pieces, or repairing existing work, it's nice to use screws consistent with the rest of the area.

Nest trip, I expect I will be hanging a lot of sheet rock. And I have enough Phillips screws to hang a lot of it, now.

I also have a little tub full of the quarter-inch hex head #10 sheet metal screws beloved of trailer builders. Not that I plan to use them.

If you have a lot of rusty, greasy, and dirty hardware and small parts or tools, here's way to clean them easily in bulk. Get some washing soda (Na2CO3), also known as "soda ash". Arm & Hammer is one common brand. Put half a pound of washing soda, 5 gallons of water, and about ten pounds of dirty hardware into a cement mixer barrel, and run the mixer for at least half an hour. Longer is better. Tumbling chips off the rust and some of the paint, and the mild caustic dissolves grease and oil. This works fine for nuts and bolts, and small parts and tools like pliers and wrenches.

I first tried this with lye, aka caustic soda, and it worked well, but it's nasty stuff to handle. Washing soda works every bit as well, but it won't harm your skin unless contact is prolonged.

This is about a hundred times faster than cleaning the same parts with a wire wheel. And a few pennies per pound of parts cleaned.

For stuff like this, electrolytic derusting is the answer. I have not done it, but I sure plan to. It has had rave reviews from people I trust in the old-car world. Link below is one of many, shows how easy it can be:

685 683. There's also an electrolytic option using washing soda and a car battery charger. I've cleaned a few old axeheads that way - very effective

Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at December 27, 2016 04:37 AM (wjvn6)

686 Yeah, soda ash, and caustic soda are real cheap. For me, free. Both chemicals are used in large quantities in making up drilling mud. Hundreds of 80-pound sacks might get used over the course of a well. I just go to the drilling supervisor, and ask if I can mooch a few pounds of soda ash or lye, and nine times out of ten, he will say, "Hell, just take a whole sack." But I always ask.

Avoid submerging the battery charger clips, or any other copper parts. Either they will get eaten, or will gunk up the solution. Bridge the top of your vessel with a steel rod, and hang the work from that with a bent steel wire hook.

Aussie, you're back! How wonderful - please know that you were missed very much.

I've got a few things to take care of, having been away from work since Friday; I'll see you all on J.J.'s thread.

Hi and thanks!
I'm so glad that I'm missed here because I'm in big trouble right now
My son and I polished off a bottle of Petaluma 2005 chardonnay on Christmas Day evening
Oops was a special birthday present for hubby and he was saving it for a special occasion
Thank heavens for the Internet because I'll have to replace it if I don't want to be evicted!

727 A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT- Many here are aware of SMFH's problems with indiegogo. The Horde are the givingest, most caring people around and I will suggest that all crowdfunding sources be avoided. Use a mailbox and a moneyorder. The recipient gets 100percent of the money without delay and all you have to put on the envelope is Box Holder. Thus ends my rant.

Sleep is highly over rated.

735 Yeah, yeah we get it Barry: "The WHITE House full of darkies"...good visual pun and a stinging rebuke to all those bitterly-clinging white trailer trash racists who just relegated you to the dungheap of history.
Good one! Keep it classy!

736 What Hugh said. I find it hard to believe that 6 Dick's locations are outselling 326 McDonald's.

Just noticed, however, that this is based on "Foursquare checkins". What on earth is that? Yet another version of Yelp. So these numbers are meaningless.

737 Fast Food map not very accurate. Many states don't have the choices that others do. We have 1 Chick-Fil-A in my whole state. We have zero In-N-Out Burgers. McDonald's is more ubiquitous. Doesn't mean it's 'popular' as in 'well-liked.'

738 Dude, I think you appropriated my own personal Open Thread. We could be twins.
