Orlando Nightclub Shooting Victims' Families Sue FaceBook, Twitter, Google for Providing "Material Assistance" to ISIS and Other Terrorist Groups

This may sound like a nice bit of payback against these villains, but in fact this will just push these organizations to perform even more censorship, and they'll be able to tell shareholders (truthfully) that their fiduciary duty requires them to censor any posts from an "extremist," or any post which could spark "extremism."

The theory that we're all on the hook for something some other asshole says is what drives this censorious, ceaseless Social Justice Warrioring, and the enlistment of every powerful corporation into the left-wing hive-mind.

The lawsuit is the latest to target popular Internet services for making it too easy for the Islamic State to spread its message. In June, the family of a California college student killed in last year's terrorist attacks in Paris sued Facebook, Google and Twitter. Keith Altman, the attorney representing the three families in the Orlando nightclub lawsuit, also represents the family of that student, Nohemi Gonzalez, in the Paris terrorist attacks lawsuit.

The Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, uses popular Internet services such as Facebook, Twitter and Google's YouTube to spread propaganda, to attract and train new recruits, to celebrate terrorist attacks and publicize executions.

Earlier this month, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Twitter said they would share a database of terror images and videos to more quickly remove terrorism content.

14 Yes, as much as I'd love to see Facebook take it on the nose, this isn't the answer - this is a case where an eye for an eye actually will leave everyone blind.

Every other post today (well, not the fireworks one) is a case where I'll be a happy ass one-eyed man watching the left burn in a fire they started.

15 I'm not a lawyer. From what I was reading earlier today, their argument is that by their curating algorithms, these social media companies are participating in the speech, rather than simply providing a forum.
So the law that says that you can't be held liable for comments posted on your system does not apply.
And these companies certainly are aggressive about deleting rightwing commenters.
So there may be a case.

17 Some time before the Internet, the Secret Service had typewriter experts. When the President got a threatening letter, they could trace that typewriter by its font and wear patterns, anywhere. They often turned out to be rental units (there were storefront businesses where you could stand and type -- like a 1940's Starbucks), and they often managed to trace the renter.

Nobody ever charged Remington Rand or Underwood with fomenting terrorism. A total disinterest on "our" part in tracking down the source of the foment does not constitute a liability on the part of the renter of bandwidth.

I can't imagine it would be too hard, once we developed an interest.

30 We want it to be hard to find and harass us for our political speech, but we want it to be easy to find and harass them for their crime/terror-related speech.

That's not wrong, it's just hard.

Especially when involved parties have all sorts of conflicted motives (like lefty tech company owners who like to conflate terror/non-terror-related speech, lefty tech company owners who sympathize with terror sympathizers, etc).

The difference is that the users paid for those services.

In social media, the users provide the product. The data the customer provides through postings is chopped up by the social media company and sold to its real customers - the advertisers and data companies.

So, the question, I imagine, is that does the social media company bear any responsibility for the effect of it's product?

87 "The theory that we're all on the hook for something some other asshole says".

There is no theory. It's a stupid notion that only applies to non-liberals. Liberals never even think of applying it to themselves--besides many couldn't really care if they outright said "somebody should string Trump up", and people were caught making plans to string the president up. Some might even mourn the failure of the plot.

They are convinced that the right is scarier and more violent than the left, and no evidence will convince them different. I saw a lib on another forum waving away all the threatened violence against Trump electors and claim that conservatives had been more "verbally violent".

It makes no sense to tell them there is no such thing as verbal violence: silent violence is violence, talky violence is violence, silent non-violence is non-violence, and somebody saying mean things while not being physically violent, maybe mean things, but it is not violence!

Talking to a liberal is like talking to somebody who won't look in the one direction that proves whatever they are currently blabbing on and on about wrong.

There is no theory, there is only the blabber of the moment.

I finally decided to try a bottle of London Pub Malt Vinegar ketchup, which uses real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. I'm trying it for the first time right now on some White Castle burgers, and it's not bad.

202 I'll disagree, Ace.

Since these social media companies were already censoring, it is clear that they showed intent to monitor what their platforms were allowing.

The fact that they censored non violent patriotic speech with which they disagreed, while allowing the murderous and hate filled speech of the jihadists tells a reasonable jury that they were indeed supporting the jihadi cause.

We need to attack our enemies at every opportunity. If these families can hit them in the wallet, it's a victory.

It's not like these platforms were examples of free and open speech to begin with.
