Great: Glen Beck Now Sitting Down With Samantha Bee to Broker Joint Front Against Trump

You can't spell Crazy Glen Beck without "crazy."

Glen Beck is really pushing very hard to gain "respectability" with not just the liberal media, but the absolutely most partisan hard-left fever swamps of the liberal media.

His groveling and clumsy attempts at cutesy-charm are sick-embarrassing.

18 It makes me wonder if Beck was playing the right the whole time. If you think about his behavior, one could almost see a person saying the things he thought people wanted to hear.

I don't know though, he's had some major brain related health issues lately too. Although I hate to sound like a lefty accusing someone of being mentally ill because I disagree with them.

Or perhaps it's simple "greed." His media empire is not what it used to be and he's simply trying to save it.

His show can actually be funny when Beck and his staff are just riffing on whatever strikes them as funny. When he's serious though, it goes into psycho land. He gets that low, serious voice with long pauses. I know to change stations then.

He spent the election calling Trump Hitler. Once Trump wins, then it becomes we aren't listening to each other.

Beck is that guy you know who is fairly sharp but can't concentrate on one thing too long because he gets bored. It causes him no end of misery because he's unable to focus.

The masks have really fallen off. I have realized so many people are just empty souls mouthing platitudes and hoping people fall for their bullshit. Others are so rigid and doctrinaire, they are willing to march off a cliff while herding us all in front of them over that cliff.

So many have revealed themselves.

As an aside, during the primaries I went to a Cruz rally in my little hometown, in one of the cattle show barns at the county fairgrounds. Ted Cruz is a powerful, charismatic presence in person. I could imagine how effectively that played in the courtroom and see how he could achieve such a successful legal career.

But some of his tactical decisions--cozying up to Trump early in the primaries to catch some of Trump's voters as Trump faded (as he was sure to do), palling around with the likes of Glenn Beck...I don't know. Someone on his campaign staff with a single iota of political savvy should've seen those moves as clumsy and amateurish.

The future hubby and I watched it on Amazon one night shortly after it went to video, because we both like Keanu and we were in the mood for something actiony. We didn't think it was going to be anything all that great, but then the dudes go to John Leguizamo and he throws them out and the Russian Mafioso calls him and says, "Why?" and Leguizamo says, "Because they stole John Wick's car and killed his dog," and the Russian Mafioso says, "Oh," and hangs up and we were like "OMG THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER."

Can't wait till the sequel. I don't think it can possibly match the first one, just because everyone EXPECTS it to be as good as the first one, while the first one was a surprise gem for everyone I know who watched it. But I'm hoping it'll at least be as fun as the original.

I honestly expect him at some point to go full David Brock -remember "The Real Anita Hill"?- with a confessional about how he was wrong all along, bamboozled by conservatives, and has seen the error of his ways, and, of course, a descent into paranoid madness- just like Brock.

353 Blade Runner, re Decker a replicant?

Think about the Tyrell's motto, "More Human than Human', and what most of the real humans we are shown in that world are like. It appears that most of the able and fit humans have left for the off world colonies, and the true humans that are left are either old (police captain, eyeball genetic engineer) or crippled by some defect (Sebastian, Gaff) And the few that are fit seem to have lost all their feeling, their empathy (Tyrell).

So who in that film is active, living, loving, fighting on the streets, in full command of their bodies and consumed by their emotions? Who is "more human than human"?

The Replicants. And Decker.

The problem with the Krauts is they're not only hit with the White Men Are Evil in General guilt, they have to overcome the Germans Are Uniquely Evil and Deserve to Be Destroyed guilt.

I'm all for remembering the Holocaust. I'm not for Germans who had nothing to do it committing national suicide because of it.

Crap, if they really want to make amends they should give their country to the Israelis, instead of handing it over to people who hate Jews just as much as Goebbels did.

365 342 My problem with Decker being a replicant is that its too clever and too cute. It wrecks a perfect story by adding a twist that doesn't need to be there and adds nothing to the story. besides, if he was a replicant, he was a really crappy one, with zero enhancements or special abilities.

The story works better with him as an ordinary man against extraordinary people, a noir with him caught in terrible circumstances.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 20, 2016 03:34 PM (39g3+)

=====================

I think his journey works both ways. The movie is all about creations rebelling against their creators and forging their own identities. Decker doesn't really have an identity, and he ends up connecting with Rachel as they fight her own path.

The movie doesn't hinge on it, so there's much more to chew on. I actually think it's a fairly unimportant detail in the film. I think the central journey is really Ed Batty's.

366 The screenwriter's word has more weight, but the script is only part of the film. The director is the one person with the most control of the film as a whole, so his interpretation should carry the most weight, in my mind.

I've seen her sit-com "Mike and Molly" a couple of times. It's not interesting enough for me to watch it other than by accident but I was surprised to see how well she played someone completely different from the fat, crude smart-ass that she usually plays.

The Replicants. And Decker.

Decker was totally human. He got beat to paste, felt miserable, passed out when a beautiful woman was hitting on him, lost teeth, drown his sorrows in bloody booze, got his hand broken, etc. The replicants were clearly more than human. Decker was just a guy doing the best he could.

390 Its not a very good book, especially given what the movie ended up being.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 20, 2016 03:31 PM (39g3+)

Phillip K. Dick wrote most of his novels in one to three months and when he was writing he wrote non-stop, in a heat, 12-16 hours per day. His prose is sometimes painful to read. That said, Dick's ideas were marvelous and when he hits his stride his novels (or parts of them) just shine.

'The Man In The High Castle' is his best novel, in my view. I'm pleased with the Amazon series because the show's creators seem intent on staying true to the author's original concept. Oftentimes, filmmakers just steal his ideas and strip the purpose behind the work right out of it.

=====================

It depends on who you think is the author of the film.

Scott didn't want the voiceover and the other changes to the film, they were dictated by the studio. When he was given the time and money to recut the film, he made The Director's Cut, the movie he would have released originally.

Just taking the first released version of a film as the authoritative version is a simplistic way to look at an art form that's as complex in its production, and with as many stakeholders, as film.

433 One of the facets I like the most about the original Blade Runner was the way it turns morality on its head. You start off, like Decker, thinking he's one of the "good guys" and he's chasing the "bad guys", and you slowly learn that the reason these replicants are fighting is that they are simply slaves who were given a death sentence - what choice did they have? Wouldn't a human fight if he was put in those shoes? What right did humans have to create a race of slaves?

An immoral society generates immoral acts, from both its followers and its opponents. And there are no "good guys" at all, unless they can elevate themselves from their surroundings, as Batty does at the very end.

440 I'm skeptical of the Bladerunner sequal. Hollywood tends to destroy all hopes. All that said, if done in the same "atmosphere" as the first one and they get Vangelis (is he still alive?) to do the soundtrack, I may see it. Tip: Never follow actors. Robert deNiro was in two movies one year: One was considered the best of the decade (Raging Bull), the other was considered one of the worst of the year (I can't remember what it was called).

Directors are a much better indicator of a movie's quality than actors.

458 "You went deep since I don't see the immorality in snuffing out rogue robots"

But they're not robots, that's the thing. They are sentient. They feel, they bleed, they love. What is the difference between them and the humans? They're actually better than human, and the humans hate them for it.

Consider it this way; same movie, different level of technology, set in the American South in the 1850's. All of the "replicants" are black, and they've escaped from a ship in Charleston Harbor. Decker is the slave catcher assigned to hunt them down.

Posted by: Tom Servo at December 20, 2016 03:59 PM (Mb+1L)

459 besides, if he was a replicant, he was a really crappy one, with zero enhancements or special abilities.

Actually, CT, that would probably be the point. He's not an engineered superfreak to go to war off the shoulder of Orion, he's just... a guy. His service with Gaff is hugely important to the replicant read, because Gaff always has a knowledge of Deckard that is positively uncanny - though Gaff is in no condition to be a beat cop anymore. I think some have speculated that Deckard's memories are largely Gaff's.

The trouble with a superman Replicant is that it doesn't have to last more than four years, so it can be superhuman in unstable ways. If Deckard is a Replicant, then he's... the next step of humanity. An inheritor of everything Gaff was, but able to reconnect with the human sense of danger and able to *live*. A *slightly* better and engineered man, free to be just a man.

*That's* what being more human than human is about.

Incidentally, the Director's Cut has one scene with Replicant Glowing Eyes on Deckard (blink and you miss it) and adds more interplay involving Gaff, particularly Deckard having a dream of a unicorn and Gaff presenting an origami unicorn. I think it's nearly 100% clear that Scott is Team Replicant.

482 As I have said before, when he had his out-patient hemorrhoid surgery they also removed part of his tiny brain. There are youtubes showing how bonkers he went. I don't think he has been the same.Any updates on him going blind? His neuro disease? There may be more as I quit watching after his hemorrhoid surgery in which he states he will sue MD, hospital, and a snow elf outside his window (ok, made that part up).

When watching you'd think there was a major screw up and half of his spine was severed. I found out later it was hemorrhoids, in which bands are typically placed. It may hurt but not dynamite up your arse hysteria. It is no wonder his "empire" is circling the drain.

He is one weird dude, who is also desperate to stay relevant. G'bye.
