Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | A Visit From Saint HillaryHere's a treat from our Poet Laureate: Muldoon. A Visit From Saint Hillary - Not a limerick (Apologies to Clement Moore and also to that other dude Not Clement Moore who totally wrote the original) 'Twas Inaugural Eve, when all through the landNot a creature was stirring, not woman nor man The bunting was hung by the platform with care In hopes that the President soon would be there Adult babies were nestled all snug in their safe spots While visions of peppermint lattes danced through their thoughts And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my bare feet Had just settled on the couch to write up some Tweets When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter Away to the window I flew like a flash Tore open the designer window treatments and threw up the sash The moon on the crest of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of midday to objects below When what should my wondering eyeballs now view But a nondescript van with a medical crew With a little old lady so wrinkled with sag I knew in a moment she must be The Hag More rapid than eagles her minions they came And she cackled, and wheezed, and called them by name "Now Weiner! McAuliffe! Podesta and Mills! On Huma! Palmieri! On Chelsea and Bill! To the top of the platform on the Washington Mall Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky So up to the Capitol her minions they flew With the van full of medication, and Saint Hillary too And then, in a twinkling, I heard a guffaw The grasping and clinging of each grubby paw As I drew in my head, set for taking my lumps Down the stairway St. Hillary came with a thump She was dressed in polyester, from her head to her foot And her clothes were all draped like a baggy Mao suit An enemies list she had stashed in her pants And she looked like a homeless guy starting a rant Her eyes-how they wandered! Gone wild with strabismus! She kept sticking her nose into everyone's business Her droll little mouth was drawn back in a sneer And the chin whiskers bleached, until they were clear A bottle of vodka was clutched in her fist And the vapors encircled her head like a mist She had a harsh laugh and a fake Southern drawl She warn't no ways tahrred, in spite of it all She was chubby and plump, a right nasty old elf And I laughed when I saw her, in spite of myself A three-hundred-sixty degree twist of her head Soon gave me to know I had something to dread She spoke not a word, but went straight to her work Emptied everyone's stockings; called me "Deplorable jerk!" Then mashing the throttle right down to the floor Her Hoveround rose up the stairway once more She lurched toward her van, her team gave her a boost And away they all flew like the down of a goose But they heard me exclaim, ere they drove out of sight- "Happy Christmas to all! She's not President tonight!" Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

rickl, willowed, commented on the address by the first Unliving-American president, William Henry Harrison:
I haven't read the whole thing, but he seems to spend a lot of time warning about too much power centralized in the hands of the Executive. WHH was the first Whig, one of two elected, both of whom left the Oval Office toes first. The party was founded in reaction to Andrew Jackson IIRC. Who did some very questionable things, and was lucky he didn't have to put down a vicious Indian war. (See, President Lamar of Texas, on how to lose one of those.) He did beat an "army" of 800 mostly women and children, hooray. Most of the Comanche forces were elsewhere and continued to pick at outlying Texas villages anyway. A Christmas Poem
The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, transforming the yard to a winter delight. The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love, I would sleep, In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream. The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near, But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure stood his face weary and tight. A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old, Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold. Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled, Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child. "What are you doing?" I asked without fear, "Come in this moment, it's freezing out here! Put down your pack; brush the snow from your sleeve, You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!" For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift, Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts, To the window that danced with a warm fire's light. Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right, I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night." "It's my duty to stand at the front of the line, That separates you from the darkest of times. No one had to ask or beg or implore, I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before. My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December." Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas Gram always remembers." "My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ', And now it is my turn and so, here I am. I've not seen my own son in more than a while, But my wife sends me pictures; he's sure got her smile." Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag, The red, white, and blue... an American flag. "I can live through the cold and the being alone, Away from my family, my house and my home I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet, I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat. I can carry the weight of killing another, Or lay down my life for my sister or brother, Who stand at the front against any and all To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall." "So go back inside," he said, "Harbor no fright, Your family is waiting and I'll be all right." "But isn't there something I can do, at the least? Give you money," I asked, "Or prepare you a feast? It seems all too little for all that you've done, for being away from your wife and your son." Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, "Just tell us you love us, and never forget To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone, To stand your own watch, no matter how long For when we come home, either standing or dead, To know you remember we fought and we bled Is payment enough, and with that we will trust, that we mattered to you as you mattered to us." OT:
I just watched the Tucker Carlson video with Mike Farrell about the electors ... and Tucker was just totally incorrect about everything. He's lucky that Mike Farrell is an idiot (and the laughable nature of people who voted for Barky - not only supremely unqualified but ineligible, to boot - crying about Trump being unqualified). But Tucker's main argument was in favor of democracy ... in a Constitutional Republic. I like Tucker. He's trying hard but that was just a total miss. The electoral college is certainly mandated to not vote for someone who's unqualified, or most certainly not for someone who's ineligible, but the arguments they make that Trump is of that ilk are hysterically stupid. That is where that argument is to be made, not that there's anything wrong with the electoral college voting for someone other than who they were sent to vote for. They should have done exactly that in 2008 and 2012. I don't like conservatives trying to be all "Democratic". That isn't what this country was built to be. Tucker could have knocked Farrell out but instead it was just a poor showing on both sides. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at December 17, 2016 07:09 PM (zc3Db) 75

The scale of her plunder may never be fully known. If she has any smarts she will cut a deal. Publicly announce that she is against this electoral subversion and Russian hacking bullshit. That would put an end to it. In exchange, no further investigations her will be pursued. She gets to keep all of it. That is a very good deal for her - she's like the protagonist in a caper movie who gets to retire to a south seas island at the end. And I think we're all a bit sick of her. Savannah has a large population of homeless veterans. Our son works with several at his univ. who are sleeping in their cars.
We have an organization here who have bought property and are building tiny houses for veterans who qualify (no drunks or drug addicts). The setting will be on a nice lot (I've seen it) with picnic tables and grills. The houses will have heat and air, a sleeping area, toilet and shower, and a mini fridge, and small cooktop. The Founders were rightly fearful of factions uniting to circumvent the restraints of the Constitution, so they deliberately placed impediments in the way of a unified government, e.g., House elected frequently by the people, Senate elected by State legislatures (thank the progressives for 17A), and the President chosen by a combination of popular votes AND a state and population based Electoral College. The obvious intent and function of the Electoral College was to prevent scum like Barky from gaining access to the Presidency even once just because an FSA had been promised unending FS forever! The problem is not the two parents. There are always a few whiners, snots, and saboteurs in every social group.
The problem is the cowardly (or downright evil) administrators who give into them. Tar. Feathers. Rail. Posted by: Margarita DeVille This can't be overstated. One of the most bewildering and troubling things over the past 8 years was watching how governments, corporations, etc. would roll over in response to a few totalitarian idiots whining, when they could just wait a week and it would all blow over, instead of giving the whiners a sense of power. If this last election does *anything* I hope it encourages people to grow a spine. The left is impotent, spectral, insubstantial if only you summon the cojones to ignore them. They are the big bad wolf huffing and puffing against Trump Tower. http://tinyurl.com/z6tm7g5 Posted by: Hrothgar at December 17, 2016 07:45 PM (wCEn4) Yep. Sheriff Joe's posse did a really detailed and complete investigation. It's amazing that that just died after they had shown their proof that it was, at the least, a doctored document. People were scared to even talk about it. Pussies all the way through. But, to me, the birth certificate didn't even matter, really, in the determination. It was certainly a sign of Barky's tendency to create ridiculous lies about anything and everything but for the fact that his father wasn't a citizen was all the proof of ineligibility needed. +++ i fuck around a lot with semi plausible crap. but itt was actually a part of the reason for it. more essentially, they had considered there to be a difference in suffrage between north and south due to slavery. since slaves couldn't vote, the north had a broader base of voters. by putting in electors they could block the election of blacks by the north. http://hechingerreport.org/republican-platform-for-higher-ed-less-red-tape-and-less-money/ “Obviously what we do legislatively is a statement of our philosophy and our principles,” said Virginia Foxx, Republican chair of the House subcommittee that oversees higher education and co-chair of the GOP platform committee. While the party’s presumptive nominee for president, Donald Trump, hasn’t said much about higher education policy, he has mentioned a proposal here and there, such as allowing student loans to be refinanced — something that is not allowed today, and a position he shares with progressive Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren — and tying the availability of loans to the perceived market value of students’ majors. “An enormous amount of hardworking taxpayer money goes into education in this country,” Foxx said in an interview. “Republicans are very concerned that we get a good return on the money we are spending.” Posted by: Jay Guevara at December 17, 2016 08:16 PM (SRKgf) 246

som,
Not sure what to say. Chicks are kinda weird. Nothing you can logically plan will work. You are a sharp, methodical, analytical guy who plans and executes. Getting a job is a combination of planning, executing and networking. Finding love is something else. Women are like ... fish. Swimming around all pretty and ... Well no... they are like birds. They are all flashy with curvy feathers and they poop on your car... No. Forget that. Women are like sports cars. All hot and sweet -looking and then you commit to them and the maintenance bills start rolling in and it's like who the hell needs that many shoes ? ... I have been married 27 years. We met in high school. I know less about women and relationships now than I knew then. I have mentioned that I am sorta dumb. I just know that good things are coming your way. Life is cyclical and you are overdue. I also know that depression and introversion is a mean place that doesn't leave any room for new relationships, new beginnings, or new possibilities. Avoid that defeatism like the plague. It's your life no matter what happens next. Yours to waste or yours to embrace. Forget what you don't have . You have more than you know. That's how you start. Then you realize that you are not in control of any of it. Then you seek out the One who is. And open the door that has all of the answers and even more important questions. Worked for me anyway. Here for you , brah. It's all gonna be great. Just wait. Posted by: Mortimer, Finish Her! at December 17, 2016 08:30 PM (zu88C) Posted by: otho at December 17, 2016 08:30 PM (lmIoG) 282

i fuck around a lot with semi plausible crap. but itt was actually a part of the reason for it. more essentially, they had considered there to be a difference in suffrage between north and south due to slavery. since slaves couldn't vote, the north had a broader base of voters. by putting in electors they could block the election of blacks by the north.
Posted by: Bigby's Knuckle Sandwich at December 17, 2016 08:14 PM (U0lQa) I think we're talking about two different issues, here. There is the electoral college and the number of votes that each state gets - which seems to be the issue you are addressing - and there is the issue of the electors in the electoral college being independent agents who are, themselves, the true voters for the Presidency (and Vice-Presidency). It seems that you are addressing the former while I am talking about the latter. And what's this about the possibility of blacks being voted into the Presidency by the north? I think you've conflated a couple of other separate issues. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at December 17, 2016 08:31 PM (zc3Db) 284

I don't always converse with liberal arts majors, but when I do I order a venti. Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at December 17, 2016 08:26 PM (GUqTq) You know, I like the liberal arts. I was a science major (obviously), but a liberal arts minor, and at one point considered trying to become a writer. There's a place for liberal arts, but not simply as a Communist sinecure, which is what they are today. The problem is that liberal arts and humanities courses are now a sump for people who, frankly, don't belong in college in the first place. To weed out the dumb shits, require all liberal arts and social science majors to take some math and hard science courses, just as prospective scientists are required to take some liberal arts courses. And fuck that "physics for poets" crap; we take no shit humanities and social science courses, they should take no shit math and real science courses. If they can't hack them, adios, pendejos. They didn't belong in college in the first place, and we'd be doing them a favor by flunking them out right out of the chute. For STEM majors college is like boot camp, or SEAL training. For humanities and social science majors, it's more like Club Med. That's bullshit, and needs to end. Posted by: Jay Guevara at December 17, 2016 08:37 PM (SRKgf) 299

There was one difficulty however of a serious nature attending an immediate choice by the people. The right of suffrage was much more diffusive in the Northern than the Southern States; and the latter could have no influence in the election on the score of Negroes. The substitution of electors obviated this difficulty and seemed on the whole to be liable to the fewest objections.

The highlight of it is finally, FINALLY, seeing Vader as a bad ass.
Evil. Killing. Machine. Posted by: Kreplach Sounds good. Even Yoda was given his moment in Episode III in that ridiculous battle with Christopher Lee, with him bouncing around like a shriveled up ping pong ball. I take it Vader doesn't bounce around? Still, I think I'm going to wait until it comes out on video, and use scene selection to watch just that, and return it. Well, I got all the Hardi-board siding hung on the north end of the trailer, save for a narrow strip above the window, which is just a hideum, because there are three 2X6's forming the header of the window opening.
Because the siding also acts as sheathing, and has to give shear strength to the wall, I ran a bead of Gorilla Glue on all the studs and headers, and then screwed on the siding. Pro-tip for Gorilla Glue: if it gets old, and doesn't flow too well from the bottle, a short zap in the microwave really reduces the viscosity. Looks good so far. Once I get some paint on it, the trailer end will be uniform with the rest of the house, and much less conspicuous. Better curb appeal. Posted by: rickl at December 17, 2016 08:42 PM (sdi6R) Unless you're badly allergic. Which I am. Posted by: Insomniac at December 17, 2016 08:44 PM (0mRoj) Funny you should mention that. I adopted a pair of kittens from my neighbor when I was 42. I had never had cats before. A couple months later, I noticed that I was waking up in the middle of the night gasping for breath. One night it was so bad I almost called 911. I ended up sitting outside on the porch for awhile. I went to the doctor, who told me I was allergic to cats and I had to get rid of them immediately. I'd have sooner had my lungs removed. The kittehs had sunk their little claws deep into my soul by then. So I went to another doctor, who prescribed an asthma inhaler. We experimented with various medications, and it was touch and go for awhile. Eventually we settled on Advair, which did the trick. Two puffs a day, and I didn't have any more trouble breathing. I used Advair for years, then gradually noticed that I didn't experience any problems if I missed a dose. I slowly began using it less and less, then stopped altogether. I think I've built up an immunity to the little buggers. One of the cats died several years ago, but the other one will turn 17 in February. I adopted another one after the first one died, and he's 9 now. Posted by: rickl at December 17, 2016 09:04 PM (sdi6R) 359
- Madison Posted by: Bigby's Knuckle Sandwich at December 17, 2016 08:44 PM (U0lQa) Yeah ... that quote is just the end of a long discussion about whether the President should be appointed, or elected, by what bodies, ... and does not address the issue that I was talking about. That point about the electors in that quote is being made in terms of NUMBER, not in terms of their acting as independent agents voting for the President. And the point about blacks was not the worry about them voting any blacks in but for the South to be using their 3/5ths representation for blacks (who couldn't vote) to gain more power per eligible voter. One quart cream, one quart milk, one dozen tablespoons sugar, one pint brandy, 1/2 pint rye whiskey, 1/2 pint Jamaica rum, 1/4 pint sherry-mix liquor first, then separate [a dozen] yolks and whites of eggs, add sugar to beaten yolks, mix well. Posted by: otho at December 17, 2016 09:44 PM (lmIoG) He is 1 or 2 in my opinion. And I think he is quite simply the best at pulling off all aspects of the Joker. The psychotic murderer. Oh, and one more thing about George Washington's egg nog: He probably did not drop hints that the whiskey he made himself should be used in the recipe.

Watching a TV channel called Viceland. If you want to see the seedy and loser side of America, they document it pretty well. They don't necessarily think they are documenting losers though. Kind of depressing but I think necessary not to live in a vacuum and to be aware of the dark side that's out there.

rickl, willowed, commented on the address by the first Unliving-American president, William Henry Harrison:
I haven't read the whole thing, but he seems to spend a lot of time warning about too much power centralized in the hands of the Executive. WHH was the first Whig, one of two elected, both of whom left the Oval Office toes first. The party was founded in reaction to Andrew Jackson IIRC. Who did some very questionable things, and was lucky he didn't have to put down a vicious Indian war. (See, President Lamar of Texas, on how to lose one of those.) "So Trump is getting called an illiterate vulgarian for spelling "unprecedented" as "unpresidented."
I've done a great deal of editing and proofreading in my career, and have encountered any number of business executives and upper-level management types on various projects who were terrible at spelling--often enough to be common and these were not stupid or illiterate men and women. Some, I think, are/were borderline dyslexic. I suspect it's just the way they're wired, the way their brains work. For example, George Patton was extremely well-educated, even gifted with a near-photographic memory, but his spelling and grammar were atrocious. Posted by: troyriser at December 17, 2016 09:54 PM (ZkXe+) --My dad is very smart, has owned several businesses, is educated as an accountant, and is dyslexic. I am not as accomplished as he is, but do have a Ph.D., and sometimes I wonder if I have some of that dyslexia: when I wrote on the board, occasionally I would transpose numbers (but not letters) --and that was when sober, not hung over. Had the honor of working with a brilliant Master Chief who constantly demonstrated an intuitive grasp of the intricacies of some very complex systems.
