Democrats Propose Bill To Force Trump to Divest or Face Impeachment

Um, 1, he will already be facing impeachment, as all presidents (or at least all Republican presidents face impeachment), and 2, you calling for something has the same effect as my calling for something.

You're powerless and inconsequential.

Embrace your reduced status.

12 It's funny to see those on the left who are convinced of two things:

1) Trump won't reach 270 at the electoral college, and if that does manage to magically happen,

2) Trump will be immediately impeached once he reaches office because of the Emoulments Clause.

They are dead set serious that they think it will happen.

I can't wait until it doesn't happen and their faces turn to anguish. I'll be funny.

30 The Left will keep harping on Trump's business conflicts, because they don't have much else.

Trump's business holdings aren't passive, but are nearly so. That's the nature of real estate -- condos, hotels, and golf courses are cash cows once they're built and up and running.

Anything that Trump does in office should only have an indirect effect on the value of what he owns. Use of a blind trust doesn't eliminate this. So it's a red herring.

Trump can have his company adopt a policy of not giving special treatment to anyone sensitive on a transaction above $__ in value. And of not doing business with certain highly sensitive people above $___ n value. Does anyone seriously think there's a conflict in selling a round of golf or a hotel room for a night?

My assumption was that Trump's kids won't go bidding on new projects that can create the appearance of impropriety. And Trump is now saying exactly that. It's on new projects that you can wield undue influence.

Other than that, there's no there there, but MSM will do HARD INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM to show that there is.

I wouldn't trust a Democrat to do that, and I don't really trust Trump to do it.

You'll never be able to completely rid anyone of conflicts of interest, but the opportunities for it are far too large with Trump. Even if he's completely innocent of every charge leveled at him in this regard, they will pile up and overshadow other elements of his presidency, possibly even defining it.

Eliminate a weapon the Left will use against him by divesting.

But then again, Trump has withstood many other attacks, maybe he'll do the same here. Maybe he'll do so much for the economy that charges of favoritism won't be heard over stuff like 5% growth (we'll see on that one...fingers crossed).

5% isn't going to cut it. Trump is going to be aiming for 7% growth. He knows, unlike so many others, that the only possible way out of this horrible financial and monetary mess is to grow out of it. There is no other escape for the US.

And there is the fact that Trump already risked huge losses in his personal portfolio just from his Presidential run. Everything he did in that run was counter to his own financial interests. This doesn't prove anything but it's one piece of data that we do have and it certainly does stand out.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at December 15, 2016 04:15 PM (8o3AL)

5% isn't going to cut it. Trump is going to be aiming for 7% growth. He knows, unlike so many others, that the only possible way out of this horrible financial and monetary mess is to grow out of it. There is no other escape for the US.

And there is the fact that Trump already risked huge losses in his personal portfolio just from his Presidential run. Everything he did in that run was counter to his own financial interests. This doesn't prove anything but it's one piece of data that we do have and it certainly does stand out.

====================

The point is the politics of Trump owning companies that do business in other countries while he's in charge of our foreign policy. The press is going to beat him up for whatever they can. Whether the public cares is another matter.

If he doesn't divest the question then becomes, will the public care? Great economic growth could mean that no matter how many anonymously sourced, and damning in vague details, stories the press runs, the public won't care. But I don't know. I don't pretend to be able to see the future.

Why conflicts of interest? Because being in business means you have interests and are thus not Simon-pure. Any business at all. Unlike anyone in government who doesn't have interests at all how dare you say such a thing.

Career politicos don't have any interests other than being pure selfless unimpeachable public servants and letting in anyone with experience from Outside is letting in the vampires. Because shut up, they explained.

Oddly, this sounds more like the vampires convincing their blood bank slaves that local law enforcement won't save them and don't have their interests in mind. I wonder why that is.

Ordinarily that would be a possible, unpalatable solution but not for the situation we have allowed ourselves to get in. Without growth everything comes crushing down on us and the dollar totally implodes. The only way to even try to avert that - again, for the no-growth situation - is to default on the national debt, but even that option is restricted because we still have the Fed's $5 trillion balance sheet to deal with, which would be impossible to unwind once a default is done.

Imagine if Hillary had won and the Right tried to get electors to go Faithless because it was obvious that Comey had given her an inappropriate pass from criminal liability, what do you think the reaction would be? Part of the Left's response would be that the People knew of it and voter her in any way.

People knew that Trump had a lot of real estate holdings. QED

IIRC, if you want to be Secretary of Treasury or State you can't have a big stock position in a company that presents a true conflict, like Goldman or Exxon-Mobil. So you have to sell. But in these cases we're talking stock in a public company in a liquid market. So easy to do.

Now here's the angle. If you're Paulson or Tillerson you can trade into a diversified portfolio of stocks without paying tax. This is actually a huge benefit. "Don't throw me into that briar patch!"

145 Every president before Donald Trump except for US Grant and Eisenhower were politicians, and you can make a strong argument that any general is a politician. They didn't have a business to run, they just were sucking on the teat.

So... different situation here. Trump is a businessman who was not in politics, so he's got ongoing jobs. There's no law that requires him to dump his ownerships and business work, but its going to be very hard to not appear to be self-serving or have conflict of interest in some cases at least.

There is no way that the voters realized that Trump has worldwide business interests, most of them with the word TRUMP on them in ten foot high letters, and so they'd never pondered the possible conflicts of interest.

190 OT/

Look at this headline I spotted on Engadget:

"Obama administration says Putin Orchestrated US election hacks"

Its that last two words that jumped out at me, "election hacks".

The fact is that NONE OF THE STATE ELECTIONS WERE "HACKED"

This is a bullshit, deliberately misleading wording of the issue. It really should be "campaign hacks". I actually think our side could do some good in pushing back on this bullshit by insisting that "campaign" be substituted for "election". One idea could be to create a bunch of Twitter accounts set to auto-respond "No, it should be #campaignhacks" whenever "election hack" is tweeted out.

Otherwise, years from now there are going to be a sizeable minority of the public that believes the actual vote was hacked. All perpetuated by the same fools that never stopped reminding us that there were people who falsely believe weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq.

Over 5000 warheads, many degraded by age, were found, most were destroyed but some 500 tons of chemical weapon material was removed from Iraq by the US. The UN complained bitterly that they were not allowed to take possession, but the UN group in question was run by an Iranian partisan, so we didn't let them take it.

Unfortunately, the left's chief means of communication is the lie, so until and unless its philosophy dies out of its own accord, or lying becomes impossible, we're stuck with the aholes.

233 Where, in the wee-wee'd up feeble minds of Dims, does it say in the Constitution (they suddenly found) that the President of the United States should be "prepared" as a Congressman or Senator? Or attorney? I'd say Obungles was less prepared than the Naked Cowboy. One year in Senate. Community Organizer. Choom major in college. Now pretend golf pro in saddle shoes. What has he done other than weaken our defenses, military, and divide our nation, races and Allies while watching ESPN with iReggie.

What sodden bullshite.

P.E. Trump, like him or not, is WORKING for our nation.

I read a sad-sack whiny bit yesterday of how Panetta was screeching about PE Trump not attending daily briefings (forgetting, I guess, in lead up to Benghazi that Oharfy called it in on his iPad). He imploded on how "if there is a terror attack, blah, blah." Excuse me, Panetta, but he has not been sworn in yet, so think if that should happen prior to 1/20/17 it is on The Won's watch.

I did read that the unusual event of three super moons in a row will cause people to lose their ever-lovin' minds, so guess we can blame the moon.

So let's look at Hilz background. Oh, yeah, she was a NY Senator after being a FLOTUS trying to ruin healthcare. I am sure her Senate seat was bought, paid for, and she has run for the office of president all of her fugly life (thank you, GOD, she was not elected). Then! She was Sec of State and obtained a bazillion frequent flyer miles, prissing around with her reset buttons (with wrong Russian word). Winning! Plus!!11!! Benghazi lies!! Plus pay for play making millions for Clinton Foundation while trotting Peyronie's Bill all over the globe! Plus giving away national security to all who cared to hack into her Podesta's lost phone or phishing. No biggie! Lots and lots of "experience" here! After all, after a donation to the Foundation, suddenly!, Algeria was lifted off the terror list!

I do not want someone with her experience in office.

Mr. Trump is placing people with knowledge in his cabinet. The Facial Mole? People who bundled money for him were given ambassadorships. Now, we have not gotten to the ambassador part...but remember the guy who was promoted to something or other and was a freaking van driver for the campaign? Otherwise, to be on the Barky team, your skin color and being gay seemed to be sought over experience and credentials and lobbying for private sector.

They are on their last spindly legs, but guess they will keep freaking out forevermore in their echo chamber of depression and diarrhea.

245 Sure, the one powerful politico in DC that is term limited should divest himself of the company he spent the last 30 years building while corrupt hacks in both the D and R side, billionaires and with active business interests get to keep their companies. Only difference unlike Trump they didn't create but married into their wealth Pelosi, Feinstein, McCain, Kerry just to name a few, don't have worry about the "appearances of conflicts of interest" even though Pelosi and Feinstein spouses invest into companies that weirdly enough get billion dollar federal contacts and have investments with foreign countries like China.

What Trump's team should do is have people looking into all these mother fuckers from both democrats and republicans (because our own love throwing their republican President under the bus) to make sure they too will be held to the same standards they want Trump too.

Especially galling the Preisdent and his VP are the only two people in DC who under the law don't have legal " conflicts of interest " and he already said he nor company will statrt any new projects for the next 4 or 8 years, losing hundreds millions dollars in new business opportunities but still that's not enough for these hypocrites.

In other words, history and the people in it are complicated.

251 Thanks Fen and Kindl, I pop in here now and then to provoke LIV's in their triple moon phase of depression.

I mostly need a daily Hag mocking to get it out of my system. I could, I guess, go downtown with a diaper pin on lapel and do the mocking live. However, I am not that ambitious.

I was bored in the Atlanta airport after Thanksgiving looking for a diaper pin but, sadly, found none to mock. Pretty boring vs going to jail.

I totally hear that as the woman from Poltergeist:

"This house...is clean."

He can taste it on Bill Clinton's dick.

This time of year? Pop up to the bar in the Top of the Hub. Great view when the city's all lighted up for the holidays.

258 alexthechick's office ceiling is falling all around her. It fell near her, then she moved to a different desk, then it fell on where she'd been sitting.

So far no evidence of tree rats as the cause.

I totally am not bringing this up so that people will ask her tomorrow about why even real estate attacks her.

Somebody needs to put fake spiders in the ceiling. Like, lots and lots of big fake spiders.

I wear a gold plated pin on the band of my hat, no-one has asked yet, but if I a question I will point out that it is gold plated, and really classy, so much better than the cheap ones, and it is Yuuuge and when you have one like this you never get tired of winning.
