EMT 12/11/16 - Back from the (felt like) dead.

I must apologize for missing last Sunday and yesterday morning.

Way too much work at crazy hours, and way too much flu made the 6 a.m. alarm clock turn off with nary a conscious thought.

Good news on both fronts:

The flu appears to be about eaten, and I don't work again until January.

Looking forward to a long Christmas break.

So, on the flu thing -- anyone have any luck with the flu shot? I've resisted taking it so far, but heck, if it would just help lessen and shorten the symptoms, I'd be tempted next year.

2 FIRST HAH!

About the flu shot, I started doing it after getting the flu one winter. It does seem to help, but not always - there are winters when I get flu-like symptoms anyway, but not as bad as that one time.

Glad you are feeling better, krak.

3 Yes on the flu shot.

I had a series of brain stem strokes back in 2007/2008 and was warned to get a flu shot each year because the flu would hit me hard. I have been diligent since then and received a flu shot each year, and *knock on wood* no bouts of flu during that time.

7 I got a flu shot from my doctor this fall. I came down with probably a mild cold which made me feel crappy for a few days. I was told by a nurse that's its impossible to get the flu from a shot.....I don't believe in GW either, which is settled science, I am told....

10 Flu shots are a crapshoot. You're left to hope they formulated this year's vaccine for the strains of flu that will surface. They were saying in September that they'd missed it this year. Who knows?

The pneumonia shot, OTOH, is a good deal.

13 I've gotten flu shots in the past, mainly when I was already going to the doctor for something else. But I don't go out of my way and make a special appointment just to get one.

It seems like it's guesswork as to which strain will be prevalent in any given year, and that year's flu shot might not protect against the strain that actually appears.

Posted by: rickl at December 11, 2016 07:23 AM (sdi6R)

16 I've gotten one for the past 10 years. It can be a crap shoot because the vaccine they make up is supposed to work on a flu strain that they think will be a problem. They make it up a year? in advance so it might not always be the best bullet.
I get one because anytime I've gotten the flu, I go down like a sack of potatoes.
Along with that, I take vitamin 4000 mg D3 daily.

Also, wash your hands, and keep them away from your eyes, nose, mouth.

36 Hello everyone. Once again today I have to preach for two services. One is at a place i have not handled the worship service before, just done communion so prayer would be appreciated.

The morning got off to a rocky start when I went to my local supermarket to get some crayons so kids can do word searches and coloring, and someone had dropped a bit of tomato by the door. I didn't see it, and slipped and landed on my knee and then fell on my back. It was a lovely pratfall.
I had to sit on a bench there while the store manager did a incident report and took a picture of my knee.

38 I didn't get the flu shot for many years, until the H1N1 scare rolled around. During that scare, many people died of the flu in other countries, but not so much in the US. One, we have much better healthcare in the country, but also, one of the components in H1N1 had been given in a flu shot a few years before, and even that was enough to limit the effects of the flu in this country.
During that time, I read that for many years after WW2, in Japan, the flu shot was mandatory for school-aged children. At one point, the Japanese decided it was not necessary, and stopped getting their children vaccinated. Death rate from the flu jumped significantly - in the elderly Apparently kids can get the flu and survive no problem, but they became carriers to the extended family members they lived with. So, not only get the flu shot, but make sure your kids get the shot as well. Which reminds me, I need to get my kids their shots this year.
And like Bruce says, wash your hands a lot, and if you can avoid touching doorknobs, do so.

51 I used to get flu shots for my kids, on the advice of my pediatrician, and for myself. Then one year the swine flu hit. It was like having a rotavirus and a respiratory flu at the same time. Two of three kids caught it (sent the healthy one to grandma's to keep her away); we did not leave the house for 10 days. I expected to come down with it, but never did. Learned later that many years prior, a similar virus had rifled its way through the population, and if you had suffered through it (as I must have), you were immune to swine flu.

That says to me that having the flu, however, miserable, helps build your immune system. Sorta like what doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger. So I decided I'm done with flu shots, at least until I'm old and feeble, and getting the flu could actually kill me.

Glad you are feeling better krak, and yes to Bruce's advice, especially regarding what to do about co-workers who come to the office and snot all over the place.

His Requiem Mass is scored for, among others, 50 brasses, 16 drums, 2 bass drums, 10 cymbals, a gong and a chorus of 400.

On the first page of the score, he says that these numbers are relative and the size of the orchestra can be increased so long as the size of the chorus is made larger in proportion.

71 I had my 4 year old get a flu shot in October because I wanted to protect my infant from the flu (she can't get the flu shot until late January when she's 6 months old). Of course, my 4 year old came down with a severe cold exactly one week after the flu shot, to the point that I thought he had the flu. We kept them separated and the baby didn't get whatever he had. Pediatrician said they haven't seen much flu this year yet (we're in Texas), but flu they have seen has a lot of stomach symptoms. YAY! So I wavered on getting the flu shot, but I need to get it so baby gets my immunity. Sigh.

I feel certain the flu caused my older son to get pneumonia when he was 18 months old. He recovered easily once he started taking antibiotics, but my husband and I both got his virus, and it was the sickest either of us had been since childhood. Ugh.

At about the halfway mark on the drive, I started getting chills, then full on ever, shaking. I barely made it through the awards, then went to hotel and bed. 8 hours later, I was fine.
"That's impossible!!", I was told: all the little viri are dead. Welp, one of those buggers survived. Haven't gotten a shot, or the flu since.

I've been taking the flu shot for years.

The upside:

No flu. Except, 2 years ago when they missed the strain. And oh, maybe 7 years ago same deal.

The downside:

None really. Flu shots are cheap and easily obtained.
Occasionally, I'll have a sore muscle at the injection site for a couple of days.

98 Good morning.

I'm on Team Flu Shot.

Two years out of the last 5 or so when I haven't gotten it, I've come down with the flu and been useless for more than 2 weeks.

Last year we didn't get around to it and my husband and I were so sick.

>>I got a flu shot from my doctor this fall. I came down with probably a mild cold which made me feel crappy for a few days. I was told by a nurse that's its impossible to get the flu from a shot

My understanding is that it makes your immune system react, so some people do feel sick afterwards. My husband usually feels icky for a few days, but the rest of us never feel it. And he's had ever shot known to man before deployments...

So yeah, you can't get the flu or a cold, but you sure can get the symptoms.

99 I got my Christmas tree out of the attic yesterday, plugged it in, and nothing. I remember having trouble with it last year and finally got it to work, but I don't remember what I did.

So I guess I need to go shopping for a new tree. I like the one I have. It's about 20-25 years old and belonged to my parents. It's a scraggly little Charlie Brown-sized tree, which is perfect for my needs.

Back when I was a kid we always got live trees, and had fun putting the lights and ornaments on it. But nowadays all I want is a little one that is plug & play.

I suppose it's too much to want one that is made in the USA. The one I have was made in China, and I guess that's all I'll be able to find now. I guess the newer ones will have LED lights, so that will be an upgrade.

Anyone have suggestions?

112 Flu shots are about 70% effective, but can also reduce the level of illness from the flu. If you have any of the risk symptoms, get the flu shot. Young, old, around kids, chronic illness, Doctor, Nurse, etc. Having the shot can also help you not spread the flu to others. An 80% effective vaccine given to 80% of the population can pretty much eliminate a communicable disease. Of course the flu changes every year so the heard immunity does not build like in the case of smallpox etc. I get it every year, so far I have not gotten the flu during a year with the shot. I did have a couple of bad cases in previous years. The certainty of a small pain and some soreness outweighs the low to moderate possibility of getting the flu. I am in the highly recommended group and for me the shots are free, so not a hard decision. I just wish they could come up with one for colds, even if it took many years of cold shots to have a high probability of hitting the right strains.

Once about 10 or 15 years ago, there was a big shortage of vaccine so I didn't get my shot. I got the flu - fever, aches all over that nothing relieved, and chills, holy cow it was such a misrery - I could have developed shingles - I had a patch on my leg that could have been just that - and I was knocked on my ass for two solid weeks at home, and the third week, I went back to work and could only manage half days.

On the liability insurance, they probably have at least $10,000 to pay medical bills for anyone hurt on their premises and this can be paid without regard to fault. Stores know that slip-and-falls are their biggest exposure to claims so they know they need to be very diligent about keeping floors clean (I always alert a store employee if I see a mess on the floor). So don't hesitate to present them with any bills that result from this.

I think the mainstream media still believed that they and they alone wore the Walter Cronkite mantle of the indispensable purveyor of absolute truth. The Internet and Social media were only viewed by a few rabid conservatives, and Twitter and Facebook were on the big narrative team, so they could be counted on to keep the rubes in line.

Then BREXIT and Trump showed them up as partisan liberal apparatchiks and various sources, like WikiLeaks, provided some insight into the inner workings of the global liberal power structure.

They now have a sacred (to them) mission to ensure this can NEVER happen again. We are just beginning to see their active attack designed to discredit #FakeNews under all circumstances and on any topic!

One thing I witnessed was my cousin's boy, well on his way to career NCO, a mighty hunk with natural football talent, being offered a mustang scholarship. It was honest and up-front, and the service gave him a pretty nice couple of day campus visit, upbeat but no BS about what he'd have to hack to make it. And he decided he probably couldn't, and passed on it.

Air Force had a lot of success with a pro-grade dietician, finally coming up with a feed regime that would bulk those guys up and peel it off again. Nobody enjoys it, it can't be healthy, but if you're going to play in the semi-pro leagues there is just no alternative.

On the basket-weaving front, I've known a few academy athletes. They get a lot of help from classmates, and tutoring. If you write a paper for somebody at an Academy, you go to jail. Certainly, some guys get into the academy on blue-chips who otherwise would not, and this overlaps in an embarrassing way with certain other recruiting mandates--that all colleges have now.

But anybody on the line academically gets that kind of help; it's virtually mandatory, part of the "Brotherhood," and they won't let you fail unless you really want to. I've yet to see the situation go beyond good-natured joshing (that all athletes get) to veiled scandal. And there are no special classes just for players. As college ball continues to get "better," it's bound to happen.

Well dang. I guess I'll have to call my doctor and see if I can get the shot, which I probably won't get anyway. I know I can't do live viruses, so I'll see what he says. Thanks for the info.

161 Yes to the flu shot - It's like being exposed to a weakened attacker so you can mobilize your own army to destroy the actual threat on the horizon.

Wash your hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (ABHR) especially before or after you touch your eyes, nose or mouth. The only time for regular people to not use an ABHR is if you have been around diarrhea.

And any healthcare worker who doesn't get the flu shot is unwelcome to take care of me or anyone I care about.

164 I have only gotten the flu once in the 25+ years I've been getting the flu shot. That was the year that the CDC guessed wrong on the strains and everyone was getting sick.

I have some non-alcohol stuff in the car because my mom won't use the alcohol-based. Dries her skin out.

So...get the stronger stuff for the kids and me?

The guy I knew who got it was an organist. Had to re-learn all the muscle-memory aspects of playing. He felt rather put upon by the whole ordeal.

167 The Chicago/Baltimore correction ratio is roughly 4.2:1.

300 Baltimore murders is equal to over 1,200 Chicago murders.

Will Chicago be able to reach 800 total homicides? I'm guessing they will, depends on how Christmas is celebrated by the gangbangers...Giving out parting shoots before New Years....I'm also rooting for 4000 shot....

168 Get the shot! Walgreen's....easy peasy and insurance paid for it. Asked for the Shingles shot but told ins. won't pay until age 60 (59 1/2 here)and it would cost me $225! Guess I'll wait 6 months.
Christmas tree...went to garage sale and bought 6 ft pre-lit $10. Looks great.

170 I'd say get the flu shot. I've been getting it for the last 3 years or so, and I've never even caught a cold during that time. (Formerly I would get one once or twice a year.)
Feel better!

172 It seems like it's guesswork as to which strain will be prevalent in any given year, and that year's flu shot might not protect against the strain that actually appears.
Posted by: rickl at December 11, 2016 07:23 AM (sdi6R)

Yeah it's guesswork - but hell, what do you have to lose? It's just a shot for God's sake. Not that expensive, over in a second and you (maybe) have a slightly sore arm and (maybe) some protection against the flu. I have gotten one for the last 19 years. Many years it helps; sometimes they pick the wrong strain and it doesn't.

It's no big deal, unless for some reason you are physically incapable of handling the vaccine...they ask you ahead of time if you are allergic to eggs, are pregnant, or have a few other conditions which make it inadvisable to get one.

174 Try Influenzinum, homeopathic flu "shot". Have been using it since 1999, never has anyone in the family gotten the flu. And when you use it, you don't get all the mercury and other nasty shit that comes with the flu vaccine. This year's vaccine is particularly nasty with respect to additives.

Take one pellet per week for 4 weeks, take a week off, then take a pellet on week 6. That's it. Start before the first freeze. In Texas, I start in September.

179 I've had the flu (twice) *after* receiving the flu shot, but upon reflection it was so soon after the shot that I probably hadn't time to build immunity and most likely was infected at the doctor's office.

180 Absolutely on the flu shot! Get it early enough so you're ahead of the crowd with the flu.

Posted by: Hopeful Dumbarse at December 11, 2016 10:47 AM (MWUxi)

181 I definitely vote for the flu shot. Even in seasons like last year, when there was antigenic drift after the vaccine was formulated, it can be helpful. The money quote from experts was: "It may not keep you from getting the flu but it can keep the flu from killing you."

I have seen flu deaths even in younger and healthy people. I get the shot every year.

185 YES, get the flu shot. Also, getting a bad head or chest cold is NOT the flu. Getting a flu shot does not mean you won't get a cold. If you come down with the flu one time and you will know the difference. People who poo-poo the flu shot inevitably and erroneously thought the bad cold they got was the flu ... not so.

Yearly flu shot, just do it.

188 No on the flu shot. Got one in the Fall of 1967 courtesy of the USMC. Gave me the flu and took 20lbs away which I needed. Never got another flu shot. Haven't had the flu since then.

Posted by: Bud at December 11, 2016 02:30 PM (0Snyf)

189 I get the flu shot every year. At my age, flu starts getting dangerous. Plus, even if they miss this year's strains, maybe a shot I got some years ago was one that had this year's common strain in it and that previous shot would protect me. I figure, the more flu shots I get, the more strains I'll be protected from.

Posted by: Pat* at December 11, 2016 03:28 PM (qC1ju)

190 Millions of serious people have dedicated their entire lives to studying the effects of vaccinations. They work. Problem with flu is it is hundreds or thousands of different strains of specific flu virus, and the ability to accurately forecast which will be prevalent in a given season strains the capacity of 'vaccination actuaries' to select the proper viruses for inclusion in "this years vaccine." Get the shot and whichever ones are included will not affect you that year, except for the runny nose you might get for a day as a result of receiving the vaccine itself. And you will also congratulate yourself for increasing the "herd immunity" of all humans with which you associate, thereby decreasing your loved ones chances of catching the debilitating virus too. Way to go, humanist do-gooder. :-)
