Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread 12-10-2016

The Chess Players, Joseph Clark, 1860_525.jpg
The Chess Players
Joseph Clark, 1860

This is great. From the expression on her face, the young woman does not much appreciate her (brother? fiancé?) leaning over her shoulder into her personal space. Perhaps he's kibitzed her games before and there's some history here. I can just see her hand over the chessboard slowly curling into a fist. Keep it up, bonehead, you're asking for a bop on the beak.

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get into a food fight on a Saturday afternoon. Unless you're hungry.

Chess, Like Life

From Warden's 'confession' thread on Wednesday:

Yeah, in retrospect I wish I had joined the debate team in high school. Supposedly they do make you argue both sides of an issue. I can see how that ability would be useful in life.

Posted by: rickl - THE MEDIA IS LYING TO YOU at December 07, 2016 09:14 PM (sdi6R)

Of course, that's what you do in chess.

There are two kinds of chess enthusiasts: Chess players and chess students. I know guys who like to play chess and they don't think about it all outside of when they're actually playing. But I daresay that most, if not all of us who hang out on the chess threads, we're actually students of the game. We analyze our games and try to understand where we screwed up. We study games of the great masters. We may even buy books on chess theory. To us, chess isn't just a game, it's more like Art. Or, perhaps Science. Chess actually has features of both.

So rickl is right that "looking at both sides" is a useful life skill. But as students of chess, this something we have to do all the time. In order to solve these chess puzzles you have to look for what you think is the correct first move for White, and then you have to look to see if Black can trash it. You do this by turning the board around (either literally or figuratively, in your head) and finding the best possible response by Black. And it does you no good to make sub-standard moves. Anybody can win if the other guy is making lousy moves. So chess forces you to be brutally objective, to argue both sides of the issue, as it were. Without this, you will constantly be blindsided by stuff you didn't anticipate and didn't see.

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - Black To Play

20161210 - Problem 1.jpg
6k1/5pb1/2p1n3/2Np4/8/1N3P2/4P3/6K1 b - - 0 1

Black wins a piece with:

1...Nxc5
2.Nxc5 Bd4+

And that should be enough for him to win the game.

Problem 2 - Black To Play

20161210 - Problem 2.jpg
r7/6kp/6p1/6N1/8/8/1b3RPP/6K1 b - - 0 1

1...Ra1+!

You might have been tempted to play 1...Bd4 to pin the rook with the intention of following it up with 2...Ra1+, but that fails because of 2.Ne6+. This is actually a good illustration of one of an important strategic rules, which is: move order is important.

So Ra1+ comes first, *then* the pin.

2.Rf1 Bd4+
3.Kh1 Rxf1#

Problem 3 - White To Play

20161210 - Problem 3.jpg
3r3k/3b1Qpp/p2P1b2/r5N1/1p6/qP4R1/3B1PPP/5RK1 w - - 0 1

The key first move is:

1. Qxf6!

Black has 4 responses:

1...gxf6 immediately fails to 2.Nf7#

Or 1...Rxg5 2.Qxd8+ Be8 3.Qxe8#

That rook on d8 is very unprotected. But 1...Rg8 results in 2.Nf7#

So we're basically down to 2 lines, either of which mates in 4:

1...Be8
2.Qxd8 Qxb3
3.Qxe8+ Qg8
4.Nf7#

-or-

1...Qxb3
2.Qxd8+ Be8
3.Qxe8+ Qg8
4.Nf7#

Problem 4 - White To Play

20161210 - Problem 4.jpg
6k1/6p1/p3br2/1p1pQ3/5r2/1P1B2R1/1P3qPP/2R4K w - - 0 1

White better get off of his fat duff and do something here, because Black is about to unleash his triple battery on the 'f' file. Fortunately for White, he has resources, and Black will never get the chance to get his own attack going:

1.Rc8+ Bxc8
2.Qe8+ Rf8
3.Rxg7+ Kh8

If 3...Kxg7, 4.Qg6+ Kh8 5.Qh7#

4.Rh7+ Kg8
5.Qg6#

Or, alternately, 4.Qh5+ Kxg7 5.Qg6+ Kh8 6.Qh7# mates one move later.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

The solution is easy.

First I insult the Queen. Then I tweet negatively about the King, bigly. Then I go to Iowa, Ohio, and Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania and recruit all the King's Pawns I can. Finally, I name the Bishop as my running mate. Checkmate.

23 So rickl is right that "looking at both sides" is a useful life skill. But as students of chess, this something we have to do all the time. Without this, you will constantly be blindsided by stuff you didn't anticipate and didn't see.

OregonMuse, there is actually a term for this very thing that says that whole paragraph in one word:

Minimax.

Or more fully, Minimax Theorem.

It arose from the needs of computer chess programming, where you could rely on the opponent to make a mistake -- you had to assume he was going to make the best move possible. So the computers were programmed to minimize the maximum dame that could be wreaked by each move.

Fore example, if you have a position where you could make one of two moves:

1. a move that threatens checkmate in one; your opponent has ten possible replies, and NINE of them allow the checkmate, but the last (and best) reply not only stops the checkmate, but wins your queen as well; or

2. A move that loses a pawn; your opponent has ten possible replies, and ALL of them win your pawn, so that even the worst player will then b a pawn up against you, no matter what.

So the question is, which move do you play?

Most weak/optimistic players will choose option one, because it has a big potential payoff. But the SMART move, played by all computers and most string players, is option two, because MINimizes the MAXimal damage to you position.

"Minimax theorem" is actually just a fancy way of saying "pessimism." THe smartest strategy in chess is to pessimistically assume your opponent will play the strongest move he can.

Now in real-life situations, especially blitz games, many player PURPOSELY violate the minimax concept because the assume (often rightfully) that their opponent won[t see the best move. I myself do this all the time, depending on the psychological circumstances.

46 Back to problem 1:

As mentioned, the "winning" move is NxN, because if black replies NxN then Bd4+ wins the piece and the game.

HOWEVER, black has a sneaky way to try for a draw: After White plays NxN, black should play Na5!, and there's no way black can defend the c-pawn, and in one or two moves black will play NxP.

At that point, black is still a piece down, BUT now the pawns are even and he still have one surviving piece to move around.

It will be very diifficult for black to flat-out "win" both of white's pawns -- he will likely at a minimum have to trade at least one of them for one of his pawns. At the point, white can then sacrifice his knight for black's remaining pawn! After which black will have B+N versus a lone king. Which of course is a forced checkmate if you know the technique But here's the thing: Many (if not most) player DON"T know the B+N mate technique! You white can hope for a draw due to the 50-move rule.

If I was playing that position as white in a real game, that would be my strategy.

131 Here is a very insightful Advanced Chess Tip for all you players who want to get better.

When your opponent makes a move, 99% of players will automatically and instinctively look at what the moves does or threatens. Duh. But master-level-and-above players will first look at what the opponent's move undoes, or unprotects or unthreatens.

The most obvious example is this: Your opponent's king is trapped on the back rank, and if you could only get a rook down there, you could checkmate him. But unfortunately, your opponent has a piece that protects that back rank and would take your rook if you tried to checkmate him.

So the game goes on for a while, and then your opponent sees what looks like a devastating attack against you. He picks up a piece, moves right into your position, and BOOM, you're crushed.

Most players look in abject horror at all the terrible things that piece now threatens to do, and then they resign because they see no way to stop them.

HOWEVER, the advanced player will first look at what the opponent's attacking piece UNprotects -- and notices that now, suddenly, the opponent's back rank is unprotected! So you just ignore the threats being made against you, and instead go rook to back rank -- checkmate!

This is a very simplified scenario of the thought processes all grandmaster go through every move. Because every time a piece changes position, any piece in any position, it undoes something by moving away from its previous square. By relentlessly focusing on the "undoing" of each move, a top player will always identify any weakness you may have created.

Sort of this like: A boxer lunges at you with a right cross -- but in so doing, he exposes himself to a counter-punch in the stomach. A good boxer will not only dodge the right cross, but quickly counter-jab to the stomach. Same concept applies to chess.

Okay, time to see how good this thread and occasional trips to gameknot.com have made me:

PROBLEM ONE:
1...Nxc5. It's free because if White plays 2. Nxc5 then 2...Bd4+ wins the second knight and leaves Black up a piece and a pawn.

_____

PROBLEM TWO:
Mate in 3.

1...Ra1+
2. Rf1 Bd4+
3. Kh1 Rxf1#

_____

PROBLEM THREE:
Mate in 2.

1. Qg8+ Rxg8
2. Nf7#

_____

PROBLEM FOUR:
Mate in 5.

1.Rc8+ Bxc8 (not 1...Rf8 because 2. Qxg7# or 1...Kh8/Kh7 because 2. Rh3#)
2.Qe8+ Rf8
3.Rxg7+ Kxg7
4.Qg6+ Kh8

Enberg was an LA guy, announced all kinds of stuff in the old days (but of course Chick Hearn was the Lakers, and of course of course Vin Scully was the Dodgers). And yes he did the Padres for a few years (still doing it? - that shows you how much I can ignore that team).

Before Enberg though for many years was Jerry Coleman. Met him several times, just a few years ago, when he and my old WWII Marine buddy would debate Solomon Islands air war stuff - Coleman was flying USMC SBDs there, my friend was an ordnance guy with several Marine squadrons there. Coleman, in his late 80s, was 100% - didn't even look close to his age, either.

249 Good stuff, guys. Very nostalgic. Seems too pat and trite, but is it possible there *was* a different time in sports media, that there *were* giants of a different sort? Might partly be just different times period, plus watching more sports, for me.

1980, "the Game". Have told this one before. I heard on the radio what had happened. Watched the taped delay at a friend's place, with a third friend - neither knew. ABC handled it perfectly - my friends didn't know who won, all the way through the game.

As for me, it was a unique experience. I *knew*, but .... the game was so intense, the drama so great, even *I* was reacting to everything like my friends, as if I didn't know the outcome. Cannot recall anything else like that in my life.

To amuse myself, I've been reading Debra Messing's Twitter feed. She has been in full flat-out meltdown since the election. I'm talking to the point of nervous breakdown. Today's episode revolves around the FACT that the CIA has confirmed that Russia hacked the election, and that Obama must now STOP the Electoral College from voting, and that we must have another election. Whatever it takes.

It's really kind of tragic. I've gone back page after page after page, and have only gotten at far back as Nov. 28. She must be on Twitter 24/7, trying to get the coup going.

Soviet hockey was something to watch. No slapshots (that missed the net or hit center-mass on the goalie) from the faceoff circle, almost no icing, no offsides, most shots from the "80% cone" in the slot.

Once saw an exhibition game between the Penguins and Central Army, first 8 min. or so of the 2nd period had *no* whistles, just end to end action. Crowd (impressed with this) started applauding - they'd never seen such sustained action before, at the highest level.

He then said he had gotten up to 30 guns all at once this way. 303 I couldn't solve problem #4 after about 15 minutes of study. So, some general observations:

1. Chess problems have an inherent weakness, in that the designer of the problem has a tell -- there IS a solution for the first to move.

2. Real life tourney play is against the opponent plus the clock. Squander too much time for move #x, and by move #xx you're in time trouble. This is why you spend every available moment analyzing, preferably on HIS clock time.

Schindler was an awful person, until the moment he wasn't. The book makes it clearer what the Little Girl in the Red Dress is about. Schindler figuratively falls off his horse when he realizes what the Nazis are really about. Godless with no shame.

420 Is there any way to animate the solutions? I mean, I KNOW that there is a way to animate them, but would that fit badly with the chess thread and the AOSHQ bandwidth? I think that your chess thread is a real "value add" kind of thing for the AOSHQ, but when the solutions are posted, in my very, very humble (and weak chess playing) opinion, we need to see the results of the various moves and not just the answers written down as a list. Maybe I just don't have enough mental bandwidth to remember that the static picture that I am seeing on my browser, as you go through the solutions, has changed because of some "Qxf6" notation. I suppose to be a good chess player that one must be able to hold those images in their head, even though there is this static image in front of our eyes ... Trust me, I'm not whining, I'm just thinking that a more fluid presentation would enhance the excellent knowledge presented here and also maybe the experience of the site? ... ahh, forget it.

Posted by: goon at December 10, 2016 09:51 PM (EaQ6/)

421 I thought that too, but now I take it as a challenge. I need to "see" these moves without them actually happening.

That said, anything more than about five moves or with multiple branches on a decision tree I usually just CP the FEN code and drop it into any one of a zillion Internet chessboard sandboxes that will let you play both sides.
