Overnight Open Thread (10 Dec 2016)

I'm a bit under the weather so apologies up front for a crappy ONT.

An Inconvenient Truth Part Deaux

I guess he needs some more cash from idiots. Coming soon: a sequel to Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth'. How many predictions from the first movie actually came true? None? You mean it was one big ass lie?

Inauguration

Not really a surprise. Not everyone wants to be seen as a supporter, especially in the entertainment business. Donald Trump having trouble booking celebrities for his inauguration.

Stormtrooper Shooting Skills

EPA

God I hope he does. Pruitt to dismantle EPA climate agenda.

Journalism

Hmmmm. The Blaze suspends reporter who shot at ISIS fighters. I'd rather have a reporter shoot at our enemy than sit there and say nothing if they knew Americans would get ambushed.

People Are Awesome 2016

The Coming Economic Narrative

The economy - an Obama myth in the making.

As CNBC announced today "The election of Donald Trump has brought with it a surge in optimism in the United States over the economy and stocks not seen in years."

What are the progs to do? They can't stop Trump with Republicans in control of both Houses. Nor can they allow the demos to come to believe that Trump is succeeding where they failed utterly. So they are going to try the next best thing. They will try to convince Americans that any any economic improvement achieved by Trump is owed to Obama.

It has already begun. According to CNN, Obama's Gift To Trump, A Pretty Solid Economy. At Politico, there is Trump Inherits Obama Boom.

College

College instructor tells students that Trump's election was an 'act of terrorism'. Really? Are you effin' kidding me? No, it wasn't. Not even close. Watch the tapes of what happened on 9/11 and then try to say that again asshole.

The Sherri Papini Kidnapping Case

I still think something isn't right with this case. Sherri Papini sex-trafficking evidence almost as flimsy as PizzaGate proof.

58 So Trump wants people who have achieved success comparable to his own?

I'm down wit' it.

Nice contrast with the usual suspects for cabinet positions -- folks who've never done anything much except vote for a living.

Changing a huge bureaucracy requires a tremendous act of will, I intuit. I suspect few can accomplish it (if any), & it might help if the new guy has already proven himself in intensely competitive activities! General officers & Fortune 500 CEOs don't get there by accident.

I wish he had taken Heitkamp for Interior, though. That extra Senate vote? Could come in real handy-- unless you think McPain & Miss Lindsey are really loyal & reliable.

The democrats can't stop Trump, presuming the GOP doesn't surrender at the first sign of a protest.

Hillary will never be president, presuming the Electors of the Elector College can't be bought or intimidated, and the election doesn't go to the house where it will be a three ring circus with clowns and elephants.

Pruitt to dismantle EPA, maybe.

Whatshisname, the guy from Exxon to be secretary of state with John Bolton as deputy, assuming the news media leaks are accurate.

I will soon be super rich, presuming the lottery ticket I just bought has the winning numbers.

I have 32 eggs in the incubator, and given the quality of the egg business I will soon have 32 chicklets, gender to be determined.

I watched that video.

Yes, bitch, we *are* headed for civil war, and that point was crossed with the election of Obama in 2008.

Since then, the Left has done everything in their power to poison race relations, and now they are pulling out all the stops to delegitimize Trump's election.

Meanwhile, colleges are saying that "whiteness" and "toxic masculinity" are things that need to be stamped out.

So yeah, civil war is still very much on the table.

89 Local conservative radio talk show guy Mark Belling has said he expects Trump's popularity to decline during his first year. It happened to Reagan. It happens to most presidents. It takes time for the new policies to turn things about and in Reagan's case, the economy in 1981-82 got worse before it got better. So 2017 might be tough, especially since the media will cut Trump no slack at all. The proof of the pudding will be what happens after that.

118 Local conservative radio talk show guy Mark Belling has said he expects Trump's popularity to decline during his first year.

Love Belling, and he's probably right. However, if you follow Scott Adams, he says that Trump has changed the psychological outlook of the populace. Confidence is at a 10 year high and that sort of thing tends to feed on itself, as does negativity. We could be in for a boom period, IF all these smart business guys stick to what they know and don't pay attention to the DemocRats who have no interest other than taking them down.

This time really is different.

121 Evening morons!

I have a question about healthcare in the workplace that I'm hoping you can offer insight on. Currently I have a high deductible plan with a $2000 deductible and an HSA account. No coinsurance or copays as long as I'm in-network, and no separate premium for hospital related expenses. The premiums are also much lower too because of my high deductible.

My company was recently acquired by a bigger corporation, and their healthcare is a wet turd. Even with a $1500 deductible, I still have a 20% to 30% coinsurance on EVERYTHING, co-pays for certain medical expenses, plus an additional $30 premium a month I have to pay for hospital coverage as provided by AllState. (For general cover it's Cigna, and hospital is AllState). There's also no HSA option, instead they offer the shitty ass flexible spending accounts.

In addition to this shit sandwich, I'm forced to participate in their "wellness program" in order to keep my premiums "low", although I'm free not to participate as long as I pay a $400 a month premium. So I must provide them my medical history on a yearly basis, and if I don't pass it with flying colors, they hike my premiums. It's a an invasion of privacy and discriminatory, and just to give you an idea of how fucktarded it is, they base it largely on the BMI scale. Seriously, none of your fucking ass business what my medical backdrop is, assholes.

This is literally the most fucked up coverage I've ever seen, yet I'm wondering if it's par for the course because of Obamacare. Have I really been insulated all this time by how truly shitty healthcare coverage has gotten?

Where I work they do something similar, but they have not yet implemented the premium hike based on BMI.

******

They also ding you for smoking too. Even without the smoking penalty, if I'm over BMI limit my premium would be $60 more a month. That's almost double what I pay now. And even if I DID stay at a normal BMI the premium is still $30 more a month than what I'm currently paying.

You know, for a fake Republican, Trump is turning out to be more of a Republican than the supposed real Republicans. BTW, Republican, as a label, means very little any more.

So far, Trump is managing like a very very conservative President. The only remaining piece is the Supreme Court nomination. And that's a biggie, or biggly. We shall see. Judge him by his actions and nothing else.

The public ratings of the two are on entirely different scales. But that's not important right now.

What is important is that there is, somewhere on YouTube, an extraordinary version of "Heroin," acoustic, by Lou Reed in his VH days, that made me not only understand viscerally that the song was intended to mirror the rush of the drug, but also gave me a glimpse of the deadly allure that has killed so many. It's almost the perfect antidrug ad, if you take it that way.

265 While its being talked about, the early Phil-on-vocals Genesis albums were quite entertaining. It was really two different bands (the Peter version and then the Phil version).

Phil's "Why Can't It Wait Till Morning?"

Awesome song you don't hear much of: a relationship-is-struggling song; very mature and real.

Genesis: "Driving The Last Spike."

Brilliant Phil-composed tune that chronicles the lives of railroad builders. Again: very mature and real. And people still idolize Peter Gabriel-era for the "profundity" of "Return of the Giant Hogweed"? Whatever.

Abacab is named after the cord progression in the song. They meant to change it once they had the lyrics, but ended up just leaving it. So, yes, nonsense lyrics. But, still a cool song.

But, there's lots of songs with nonsense lyrics.

Thinkin' 'bout the times you drove in my car.

Thinkin' that I might have drove you too far.

And I'm thinkin' 'bout the love that you laid on my table.

I told you not to wander 'round in the dark.

I told you 'bout the swans, that they live in the park.

Then I told you 'bout our kid, now he's married to Mabel.

Yes, I told you that the light goes up and down.

Don't you notice how the wheel goes 'round?

And you better pick yourself up from the ground

Before they bring the curtain down,

Yes, before they bring the curtain down.

Talkin' 'bout a girl that looks quite like you.

She didn't have the time to wait in the queue.

She cried away her life since she fell off the cradle.

Those are some world-class nonsense lyrics, but Badge is probably the best song Cream ever put out.

Hey now! That album was something a LOT of us were waiting on! I remember when I bought it, I invited a friend over that was a Boston fan. We drank heavily while listening to it all the way through...and then we listened to it again...all the way through. At that moment, it was manna from the heavens.

A few months later I spent an hour in my car listening to it with a beautiful blonde I worked with who was (unfortunately) engaged. Her eyes glazed over about half way through it--she mumbled something about feeling like she was in high school again.

Stupid me, and my honor--I did nothing other than let the album continue to play.

391 Splunge, hard to say about which modern-day albums will be so well regarded.

I think Joe Bonamassa's work seems to have some solid build quality. Adele has her issues but she's the first classic pre-rock R&B singer to make bank in forever, so she'll probably be fondly remembered. And Amy Winehouse is already considered legendary.

And although I hate to say it, I'd bet people will look back on a lot of Kanye West's work fondly, if only for all the crazy memories of what an insane person he is/was. Especially if he happens to die prematurely. Kind of a similar thing with Janis Joplin, who when I was growing up was always talked about as much for her incredible intake of alcohol, as much as her talent.

I will never forget laying awake and hearing their call signs, which sounded like "ekkay airay oh-ka!" At night you could get that station almost anywhere in the southwest.

It was basically a twin to the Tijuana station that Wolfman Jack was on, and along with a couple of other border blasters was the basis for Z Z Top's song "I heard it on the X".

508 I saw something about Stradivariuses. They are supposed to be the best sounding violins there ever were, and Stradivari had some sort of magic that can't be replicated.

Well, they did some blind tests a few times with top of the line newly made violins vs Stradivarii, and the supposed experts couldn't tell the difference.

Yes indeed. Its the same way in the guitar community. People will pay $30,000 and up for a 60's original Fender Strat. And some of those sound damn good. But the MIA (Made in America) Strats that have rolled off the line for the last decade or so are more consistent in build quality, and can hang with those. Its all about what you want to pay for--status or sound.

542 I was reading -- there was famous test in 2009. A virtuoso played his 1711 Stradivarius, valued at $2M, along with 4 modern violins made by a Swiss violin maker of high repute. The modern ones were damned good, of course, including one with wood that had been treated with fungi, per some scientific analysis of wood properties and shit.

He did this in front of an audience of snobs in some famous concert hall. The fungus violin came in first, and the Stradivarius came in second in ratings by the snobs of the best sounding one. Once the winner was announced, the vast majority of the audience concluded the winner was the Stradivarius.

"Mouse" rhymes with "house".

Moosehead beer comes from Nova Scotia. Big out there. Out West, it's essentially an import, alla same as Miller High Life, or Dos Equis. I have had it. OK, it's beer beer.

We have craft breweries in most provinces. If I want a beer simply as a thirst quencher while driving the lawn mower, I usually get Old Milwaukee (because cheap), or Pilsener (a Molson product, branded as Old Style in B.C., which was my father's choice, too).

L. compreciceps is awesome. I had a beautiful 55 gal of L. brachardii (or some such), the white ones with the lyre tail. I had a breeding pair and ended up with maybe 30-40 of them. There is a very interesting group of fish that seem to have evolved in Lake Tanganyika -- they're not found in rivers that flow into the lake, and there are just a few that are found in the Congo, which flows out of the lake. The first of the group that was written-up by biologists was called "Lamprologus" something-or-other, so they are referred-to as Lamprologines. Nowadays, they also include the genera Telmatochromis, Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, Altolamprologus, Challinochromis, and a few others.

Just got back from a two-hour lecture by one of the world's experts on this group of fish that surveyed (in his opinion) how they should be grouped, classified, and differentiated. Along the way, we discussed such oddities as a species of fish whose nuclear DNA suggested it was an offbranch of Altolamprologus Compressiceps....but whose mitochondrial DNA suggest that it is descended from Lamprologus Callipterus; albino blind fish that live in a river, and fish that are called several names but are probably the same fish. It was sprinkled with geek jokes like: "and here you see Telmatochromis Bifrenatus, which you can easily identify by its THREE stripes."

is it true they are being driven to extinction by invasive carp in lake Tanganyika?
Posted by: Kindltot at December 11, 2016 01:41 AM (typGQ)

Lake Tanganyika hasn't had a horrible problem with introduced species. Lake Victoria has had an incredibly tragic problem with the introduction of the Nile Perch, which have nearly wiped-out all endemic species. Part of the reason for this is that Lake V is broad, shallow, and contains regular water -- where Lake T is the second deepest lake in the world, is hypoxic below a relatively shallow depth, and in the reasonably livable regions has so many dissolved minerals that snail shells from deceased snails don't dissolve.....they get thicker. They've found undissolved snail shells more than 1500 years old.

People seem to think that direct-drive turntables are some kind of hot-shit new invention, but as a kid, I had a 78 RPM direct drive turntable that had been part of some high-end RCA radio-gramaphone. The motor was a bronze disc about the size of a 45 RPM record, surrounded by electromagnets. It had a lot of torque. I could stand on the thing, kick the switch on, and it would spin up with me standing on it, until I got dizzy and it bucked me off.

Holy shit! Somewhere in the Horde, someone be DOES know about everything! I haven't heard anyone talk about Lamprologus sp. for prolly 30 years.

L. compreciceps is awesome. I had a beautiful 55 gal of L. brachardii (or some such), the white ones with the lyre tail. I had a breeding pair and ended up with maybe 30-40 of them. They were a mutant strain and the points on the tail were 2-3 times as long as the standard variety and all soft and fluttered behind them.

I don't have an adze, but I do have big drawknife that came from my grandfather, and a spokeshave or two. It is truly amazing stuff. In rebuilding the floor of this mobile home here, I had to sister the floor joists, and add cleats to stiffen unsupported edges of the plywood subfloor. I used Robertson-head wood screws and Gorilla glue on all the joints. And before mating up the glue joint, I passed a damp rag over one face of it. A little dampness catalyzes the resin in Gorilla glue, and speeds its cure a lot.

Happened to me when I saw Ian Hunter at the West Side Pier in '81; this was when his song 'Central Park and West' was a minor hit, getting radio play. I was 25 at the time. When Hunter played some of his songs from his solo work, I was standing on my chair, singing along. There were two kids, a guy and a girl, sitting next to me. I heard the girl say to the guy, 'He knows all the words!' I felt 'old' at 25.

In 1981, the phrase 'Get Off My Lawn!' hadn't been coined yet but . . . Get Off My Lawn!

As to the Electoral College faithless elector(s) strategy, wiki sez

Despite 157 instances of faithlessness as of 2015, faithless electors
have not yet affected the results or ultimate outcome of any other
election for President and Vice President of the United States.

And it won't this time either, with the House safely in R hands. I do expect a backlash in the states though, as Minnesota tightened their electoral voter rules after one anonymous faithless vote in 2004.

761 Featured from the National Museum of the Marine Corps Museum’s Facebook Page
A couple of months ago, when I told General Krulak, the former Commandant of the Marine Corps, now the chair of the Naval Academy Board of Visitors, that we were having General Mattis speak this evening, he said, “Let me tell you a Jim Mattis story.” General Krulak said, when he was Commandant of the Marine Corps, every year, starting about a week before Christmas, he and his wife would bake hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of Christmas cookies. They would package them in small bundles.
Then on Christmas day, he would load his vehicle. At about 4 a.m., General Krulak would drive himself to every Marine guard post in the Washington-Annapolis-Baltimore area and deliver a small package of Christmas cookies to whatever Marines were pulling guard duty that day. He said that one year, he had gone down to Quantico as one of his stops to deliver Christmas cookies to the Marines on guard duty. He went to the command center and gave a package to the lance corporal who was on duty.
He asked, “Who’s the officer of the day?” The lance corporal said, “Sir, it’s Brigadier General Mattis.” And General Krulak said, “No, no, no. I know who General Mattis is. I mean, who’s the officer of the day today, Christmas day?” The lance corporal, feeling a little anxious, said, “Sir, it is Brigadier General Mattis.”
General Krulak said that, about that time, he spotted in the back room a cot, or a daybed. He said, “No, Lance Corporal. Who slept in that bed last night?” The lance corporal said, “Sir, it was Brigadier General Mattis.”
About that time, General Krulak said that General Mattis came in, in a duty uniform with a sword, and General Krulak said, “Jim, what are you doing here on Christmas day? Why do you have duty?” General Mattis told him that the young officer who was scheduled to have duty on Christmas day had a family, and General Mattis decided it was better for the young officer to spend Christmas Day with his family, and so he chose to have duty on Christmas Day.
General Krulak said, “That’s the kind of officer that Jim Mattis is.”
The story above was told by Dr. Albert C. Pierce, the Director of the Center for the Study of Professional Military Ethics at The United States Naval Academy. He was introducing General James Mattis who gave a lecture on Ethical Challenges in Contemporary Conflict in the spring of 2006. This was taken from the transcript of that lecture.

763 756 teej, I'm going to need more than kindling. I've developed an expensive log addiction. It looks like half a cord of wood is going to last me about two weeks. May have to go to work as a greeter at WalMart to support my wood habit.
