I have a question about healthcare in the workplace that I'm hoping you can offer insight on. Currently I have a high deductible plan with a $2000 deductible and an HSA account. No coinsurance or copays as long as I'm in-network, and no separate premium for hospital related expenses. The premiums are also much lower too because of my high deductible.
My company was recently acquired by a bigger corporation, and their healthcare is a wet turd. Even with a $1500 deductible, I still have a 20% to 30% coinsurance on EVERYTHING, co-pays for certain medical expenses, plus an additional $30 premium a month I have to pay for hospital coverage as provided by AllState. (For general cover it's Cigna, and hospital is AllState). There's also no HSA option, instead they offer the shitty ass flexible spending accounts.
In addition to this shit sandwich, I'm forced to participate in their "wellness program" in order to keep my premiums "low", although I'm free not to participate as long as I pay a $400 a month premium. So I must provide them my medical history on a yearly basis, and if I don't pass it with flying colors, they hike my premiums. It's a an invasion of privacy and discriminatory, and just to give you an idea of how fucktarded it is, they base it largely on the BMI scale. Seriously, none of your fucking ass business what my medical backdrop is, assholes.
This is literally the most fucked up coverage I've ever seen, yet I'm wondering if it's par for the course because of Obamacare. Have I really been insulated all this time by how truly shitty healthcare coverage has gotten?

I've gotten new, or almost new small appliances at second hand shops. You can almost always find a manual online.
My greatest coup was a home Bunn coffee machine. The kind like they have in restaurants, only smaller and plastic. You have the basket of grounds in there, pour in the water and coffee starts coming out instantly, like magic.

Sounds like shit to me, I have no advice. Sadly I'm afraid this is the story of many. My 22 yr old daughter who has never had a claim in her life had hers jump to 500 a month. I had to put her on my plan at work. As a single I was only going to have to pay 90 dollars a month for top notch. Had to buy the family plan to add her. Mr K's went up to 800 a month. He is talking remarriage to which I say "lets not be hasty" Obamacare is the worst thing to ever happen to most everyone.

I have a question about healthcare in the workplace that I'm hoping you can offer insight on. Currently I have a high deductible plan with a $2000 deductible and an HSA account. No coinsurance or copays as long as I'm in-network, and no separate premium for hospital related expenses. The premiums are also much lower too because of my high deductible.
My company was recently acquired by a bigger corporation, and their healthcare is a wet turd. Even with a $1500 deductible, I still have a 20% to 30% coinsurance on EVERYTHING, co-pays for certain medical expenses, plus an additional $30 premium a month I have to pay for hospital coverage as provided by AllState. (For general cover it's Cigna, and hospital is AllState). There's also no HSA option, instead they offer the shitty ass flexible spending accounts.
In addition to this shit sandwich, I'm forced to participate in their "wellness program" in order to keep my premiums "low", although I'm free not to participate as long as I pay a $400 a month premium. So I must provide them my medical history on a yearly basis, and if I don't pass it with flying colors, they hike my premiums. It's a an invasion of privacy and discriminatory, and just to give you an idea of how fucktarded it is, they base it largely on the BMI scale. Seriously, none of your fucking ass business what my medical backdrop is, assholes.
This is literally the most fucked up coverage I've ever seen, yet I'm wondering if it's par for the course because of Obamacare. Have I really been insulated all this time by how truly shitty healthcare coverage has gotten?

Where I work they do something similar, but they have not yet implemented the premium hike based on BMI. I also agree the BMI thing is a complete scam. I recall how Michael Jordon was considered fat in his athletic prime under the BMI. Yet another reason there is an "epidemic" of obesity.

They also ding you for smoking too. Even without the smoking penalty, if I'm over BMI limit my premium would be $60 more a month. That's almost double what I pay now. And even if I DID stay at a normal BMI the premium is still $30 more a month than what I'm currently paying.

What is important is that there is, somewhere on YouTube, an extraordinary version of "Heroin," acoustic, by Lou Reed in his VH days, that made me not only understand viscerally that the song was intended to mirror the rush of the drug, but also gave me a glimpse of the deadly allure that has killed so many. It's almost the perfect antidrug ad, if you take it that way.

Yes, and I realize Pyromania is a tipping point, but I saw the band on that tour and they were *still* "metal" at that point--they opened the show with guns blazing and it never stopped for 2 solid hours--not a single ballad to be found.

I never really "got" Lou Reed. Maybe I just haven't heard enough of him or VU. Don't know.
I know there was a compilation of Velvet Underground tracks that came out in the 1980s, actually called "VU," and that was actually a hit album at the time, over a decade after the group broke up for good.

It took guts to go all-metal in the 1980s, all the way through a show. The big trend was arena ballads a la Journey's "Open Arms," and even Slade tried to mellow out a bit with "My Oh My."
"Open Arms" is also a good example of a decent song ruined by being grotesquely overplayed on the radio, IMHO.

Hey now! That album was something a LOT of us were waiting on! I remember when I bought it, I invited a friend over that was a Boston fan. We drank heavily while listening to it all the way through...and then we listened to it again...all the way through. At that moment, it was manna from the heavens.
A few months later I spent an hour in my car listening to it with a beautiful blonde I worked with who was (unfortunately) engaged. Her eyes glazed over about half way through it--she mumbled something about feeling like she was in high school again.
Stupid me, and my honor--I did nothing other than let the album continue to play.

I think Joe Bonamassa's work seems to have some solid build quality. Adele has her issues but she's the first classic pre-rock R&B singer to make bank in forever, so she'll probably be fondly remembered. And Amy Winehouse is already considered legendary.
And although I hate to say it, I'd bet people will look back on a lot of Kanye West's work fondly, if only for all the crazy memories of what an insane person he is/was. Especially if he happens to die prematurely. Kind of a similar thing with Janis Joplin, who when I was growing up was always talked about as much for her incredible intake of alcohol, as much as her talent.

which led me to look up both schools, which led to a link to the university of south dakota which led to my discovering they house the national music museum on their vermillion, south dakota campus.
the nmm has one of the world's finest collection of musical instruments, over 15,000, including amati's guarneri's and stradivarius' (a violin, and very rare guitar and mandolin!).

It's like the wine snobs, audiophiles and the like.
This isn't to say Stradivarii aren't damn good violins. It's just to say that the "magic" can be replicated, if not exceeded.

well it was mostly a result of the fact that stradivarius crafted all of his instruments using tools made from damascus steel and tuned them in halls constructed from roman concrete.

Yes indeed. Its the same way in the guitar community. People will pay $30,000 and up for a 60's original Fender Strat. And some of those sound damn good. But the MIA (Made in America) Strats that have rolled off the line for the last decade or so are more consistent in build quality, and can hang with those. Its all about what you want to pay for--status or sound.

Guitars are one of the least sophisticated instruments, at least when it comes to the the number of parts and complexity involved in building them. You absolutely can replicate the sound of Vintage Guitars, particularly if we're talking electrics.

The lumber has *zero* to do with it--its an electric, the pickups and electronics are the only sounds transmitted thru the amp.

I swear I was the only person screaming - prolly one of only 10 in the stadium who even knew what the song was - when the slammed out the first bar of Before The Make Me Run. Moosehead beer comes from Nova Scotia. Big out there. Out West, it's essentially an import, alla same as Miller High Life, or Dos Equis. I have had it. OK, it's beer beer.
We have craft breweries in most provinces. If I want a beer simply as a thirst quencher while driving the lawn mower, I usually get Old Milwaukee (because cheap), or Pilsener (a Molson product, branded as Old Style in B.C., which was my father's choice, too).

L. compreciceps is awesome. I had a beautiful 55 gal of L. brachardii (or some such), the white ones with the lyre tail. I had a breeding pair and ended up with maybe 30-40 of them. They were a mutant strain and the points on the tail were 2-3 times as long as the standard variety and all soft and fluttered behind them.

There is a very interesting group of fish that seem to have evolved in Lake Tanganyika -- they're not found in rivers that flow into the lake, and there are just a few that are found in the Congo, which flows out of the lake. The first of the group that was written-up by biologists was called "Lamprologus" something-or-other, so they are referred-to as Lamprologines. Nowadays, they also include the genera Telmatochromis, Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, Altolamprologus, Challinochromis, and a few others.
Just got back from a two-hour lecture by one of the world's experts on this group of fish that surveyed (in his opinion) how they should be grouped, classified, and differentiated. Along the way, we discussed such oddities as a species of fish whose nuclear DNA suggested it was an offbranch of Altolamprologus Compressiceps....but whose mitochondrial DNA suggest that it is descended from Lamprologus Callipterus; albino blind fish that live in a river, and fish that are called several names but are probably the same fish. It was sprinkled with geek jokes like: "and here you see Telmatochromis Bifrenatus, which you can easily identify by its THREE stripes."

Lake Tanganyika hasn't had a horrible problem with introduced species. Lake Victoria has had an incredibly tragic problem with the introduction of the Nile Perch, which have nearly wiped-out all endemic species. Part of the reason for this is that Lake V is broad, shallow, and contains regular water -- where Lake T is the second deepest lake in the world, is hypoxic below a relatively shallow depth, and in the reasonably livable regions has so many dissolved minerals that snail shells from deceased snails don't dissolve.....they get thicker. They've found undissolved snail shells more than 1500 years old.

People seem to think that direct-drive turntables are some kind of hot-shit new invention, but as a kid, I had a 78 RPM direct drive turntable that had been part of some high-end RCA radio-gramaphone. The motor was a bronze disc about the size of a 45 RPM record, surrounded by electromagnets. It had a lot of torque. I could stand on the thing, kick the switch on, and it would spin up with me standing on it, until I got dizzy and it bucked me off.

L. compreciceps is awesome. I had a beautiful 55 gal of L. brachardii (or some such), the white ones with the lyre tail. I had a breeding pair and ended up with maybe 30-40 of them. They were a mutant strain and the points on the tail were 2-3 times as long as the standard variety and all soft and fluttered behind them.

You do know that an adze is a woodworking tool, a counterpart to an axe, right? The blade of an adze is set crosswise to the axis of the handle. Was much used for squaring and notching timbers. No log cabin builder would be without one.

I don't have an adze, but I do have big drawknife that came from my grandfather, and a spokeshave or two. Also have my grandfathers "slick" which is a huge, razor-sharp chisel about 2" across, with a long handle, which you use two-handed, for jobs that would be done by a plane. It is very handy, when used for the sort of thing for which it was made.

It is truly amazing stuff. In rebuilding the floor of this mobile home here, I had to sister the floor joists, and add cleats to stiffen unsupported edges of the plywood subfloor. I used Robertson-head wood screws and Gorilla glue on all the joints. And before mating up the glue joint, I passed a damp rag over one face of it. A little dampness catalyzes the resin in Gorilla glue, and speeds its cure a lot.

And it won't this time either, with the House safely in R hands. I do expect a backlash in the states though, as Minnesota tightened their electoral voter rules after one anonymous faithless vote in 2004.

Tim, that works. It's just that the load is slower than a snail. The little button over on the right that you drag up and down goes down...and then it comes back up, loads another hundred and goes back down. Then it comes up a...well, you get the idea. With seven hundred, that button looks like a jumping jack.

A couple of months ago, when I told General Krulak, the former Commandant of the Marine Corps, now the chair of the Naval Academy Board of Visitors, that we were having General Mattis speak this evening, he said, “Let me tell you a Jim Mattis story.” General Krulak said, when he was Commandant of the Marine Corps, every year, starting about a week before Christmas, he and his wife would bake hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of Christmas cookies. They would package them in small bundles.
Then on Christmas day, he would load his vehicle. At about 4 a.m., General Krulak would drive himself to every Marine guard post in the Washington-Annapolis-Baltimore area and deliver a small package of Christmas cookies to whatever Marines were pulling guard duty that day. He said that one year, he had gone down to Quantico as one of his stops to deliver Christmas cookies to the Marines on guard duty. He went to the command center and gave a package to the lance corporal who was on duty.
He asked, “Who’s the officer of the day?” The lance corporal said, “Sir, it’s Brigadier General Mattis.” And General Krulak said, “No, no, no. I know who General Mattis is. I mean, who’s the officer of the day today, Christmas day?” The lance corporal, feeling a little anxious, said, “Sir, it is Brigadier General Mattis.”
General Krulak said that, about that time, he spotted in the back room a cot, or a daybed. He said, “No, Lance Corporal. Who slept in that bed last night?” The lance corporal said, “Sir, it was Brigadier General Mattis.”
About that time, General Krulak said that General Mattis came in, in a duty uniform with a sword, and General Krulak said, “Jim, what are you doing here on Christmas day? Why do you have duty?” General Mattis told him that the young officer who was scheduled to have duty on Christmas day had a family, and General Mattis decided it was better for the young officer to spend Christmas Day with his family, and so he chose to have duty on Christmas Day.
General Krulak said, “That’s the kind of officer that Jim Mattis is.”
The story above was told by Dr. Albert C. Pierce, the Director of the Center for the Study of Professional Military Ethics at The United States Naval Academy. He was introducing General James Mattis who gave a lecture on Ethical Challenges in Contemporary Conflict in the spring of 2006. This was taken from the transcript of that lecture.
