Someone, I forget who, postulated the beginning of the end for this militant Snowflakism would be when they began to piss off their chief propaganda organ -- Hollywood -- enough that even Hollywood said, "Fuck these hysterical Adult Babies."
We're getting there.University officials bothered doing what they never bother doing when the Adult Babies shout down a conservative -- they chided (gently) the Adult Babies.
The students hurled a litany of insults at [Boys Don't Cry director Kimberly] Peirce, putting up posters that read "fuck your transphobia" and "you don't fucking get it" among other things. Worse, when Peirce ascended to her podium, students had placed a sign there. It read "fuck this cis white bitch." That Peirce is actually gender-fluid is quite beside the point. The students' unbelievable rudeness crossed the line into a kind of censorship when Peirce tried to speak: the students simply shouted over her. Eventually they let her talk, but some students continued to yell things like "fuck your respectability politics" and "fuck you scared bitch." ... You're probably [] wondering why the social justice left hates Peirce so much. Well, the film was ahead of its time in 1999, but in 2016 it's problematic. That's because the main character, Brandon, was played by Hilary Swank, a non-trans person. Students were also incensed at the idea of Peirce having profited from violence against trans people, which isn't a remotely accurate way to characterize things, but there it is.

I pointed out to a liberal friend of mine that the gay activists of the 1970s who did so much for the gay rights movement would be considered hateful by most activists today because they didn't support gay marriage. And it wasn't just that they didn't think they could get it yet, it was that they actually didn't want it.

Ok, well I guess I sorta expect Hollowwood to take license with that sort of thing, but the crime itself was...
You know, there is a documentary on this topic, and it is significantly better than the drama, which I would agree sorta makes her seem more sympathetic.
She was attempting to perpetrate a fraud on people, including her female partner, AND in that she had a criminal history of passing bad checks (or something like that).

The Halo Effect that must be applied to movie characters is frustrating because the actual messiness of human lives is more interesting than the Hero version.
But that requires skill and nuance to write and there's a reason that 99% of everything is crap.
In wildly different news, I read a review of Silence, the new Scorsese movie, and the reviewer found it very moving and meaningful and that was coming from someone who noted that s/he was an atheist and still found the mediation on the power of faith quite powerful.
Scorsese may be the exception to the rule that directors should never actually make their life long dream work because they're too close to the subject to be objective about it.

That's one of those facts that I know but for some reason that day it just hit me. One sixth of the country just slaughtered in, what, three years? Just. Gone.

The only 'trans' people I know are an hispanic guy with overly plucked eyebrows (and sometimes makeup) and an elderly man who wears hats -- with flowers. They are a regular fixture in town, so I don't get all this other stuff. You might blink if you see them; but not really an issue. The one I know socially would not even dream of using a woman's bathroom.

I think Scorsese makes movies for himself, but he's far from a narcissist.
Roger Ebert interviewed sometime in the 90s, I think, and Scorsese, who does take Catholicism seriously despite his lack of practicing it, admitted that he thinks he'll go to Hell when he dies because of the life he lead.

There really is a difference between a man (or woman, though it's way harder to be a transvestite woman) who simply likes to dress up like a woman and "be pretty," and someone who has an actual delusion that they are "in the wrong body."
The few transvestites I've ever run into were quite clear that a) they were weird and b) they were mostly doing what they were doing for shock-value.
The only actual transgender person I've met was so deranged in other ways that it made me sad we don't really have State Homes anymore.

I believe we are seeing and hearing the extreme examples -but they are occurring more and more frequently - an infestation if you will.
The more reasonable ones (hopefully includes all of us in the horde) need to not only point and laugh, but point out the ludicrousness of their behavior, and chide them when they sit at the opposite side of a conference room table asking for a job.
We also need to stay strong to what our core beliefs are - your individual beliefs. If your faith teaches you that certain behaviors are wrong (remember: hate the sin, love the sinner) - stay strong. It won't be easy. You will be mocked, hated, and probably spit on. I look at it this way -if I haven't pissed off someone then I haven't stood up for something.

I think the work he's doing with The Film Foundation is fantastic as well.
It's an interesting discussion with film moving from real film to digital. How do you preserve data? You need not only stable storage media but legacy software and equipment with which to play the files.

Don't be too quick to assume that that will be their future. Some will (in fact already have) end up in HR departments, making the rest of us endure "diversity workshops" and having a big say in who gets hired (White cis males need not apply.)

Another movie that I know I'm in the minority on.
I love Prometheus. It raises questions about the meaning of our origins that it has no inclination to answer, and I love that. Raising the questions and then giving me slickly produced action with some very good acting is a great time for me. I've seen it at least 5 times.
I only wish Scott has used the extended encounter with Shaw and the Engineer in the pod at the end of the movie. It plays so much better than the shortened version.

It's not a mess. It's pretty clear about its goals. It just takes a long time to get there, and I think the time is worth it.
I actually feel for Ann Darrow before she ever sets foot on the ship. The relationship between Ann and Kong is allowed to develop in surprisingly natural ways. Kong's downfall feels very melancholy.
Sure, he could have cut 20-30 minutes from it, but I'm completely cool with the extended dinosaur fights as long as I get quality time with the characters, which we do.

The one thing I do give it credit for is that Michael Fassbender uses Lawrence of Arabia as his model for how to be a human. That got my kids to finally watch LoA and appreciate its brilliance.
