Shocker: Researchers Say There's Just Not Enough Evidence to Conclude "Sex Addiction" is a Thing Which Is Really Real

Previous editions of the DSM called "sex addiction" "being a dude."

Celebrities, Anthony Weiner hardest hit.

Claiming a sex addiction may be a go-to for misbehaving celebrities and politicians, but from a science perspective there isn't enough study to prove sex addiction is real, according to a professional organization of sex educators and therapists.

There is not enough empirical evidence to classify sex addiction or porn addiction as a mental disorder, the The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) said in a statement to members last week. The organization said that current sex addiction therapy and counseling is not adequately informed by human sexuality and thus not supported as a standard practice by the organization.

I saw someone link this Bob Newhart appearance on Mad TV a little while ago, and it seems apropos here.

And speaking of sex, there are now dating sites which will hook you up only with people who supported the candidate you supported:

The encounter had seemed promising enough, but the couple brought together by an online dating site failed to connect because of one glaring, irreconcilable difference: He was a Donald Trump supporter, she was not.

It's a scene played out again and again in the dating world: In an increasingly partisan and polarized country, similarity in political viewpoints has become a major criterion when choosing -- or weeding out -- prospective love interests.

But now, new dating websites are cropping up to take the guesswork out of pinning down political leanings.

One site, TrumpSingles.com specifically caters to fans of the divisive real estate billionaire...

A similar site was set up for supporters of Bernie Sanders, the tousle-haired Vermont senator whose fiery rhetoric and embrace of environmental causes earned him a fervent and loyal following among liberals and voters under the age of 30.

TrumpSingles says it has registered 12,000 people with a goal of "Making Dating Great Again" -- a riff on Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan.

Unlike conventional dating sites such as Match.com and OKCupid, the site screens its users to ensure they are not trolls seeking to make trouble, but truly supporters of the president-elect, who takes the oath of office next month.

I don't think this idea is anything close to crazy, or divisive. A long time ago I used to go to a "secret" conservative meet-up. When I would go there, I preferred not to talk about politics (it's my day job, after all -- I just got done talking about politics all day).

So why go at all? Why go to an event featuring people who shared (basically) your politics and avoid politics as a topic?

Well, what I think is that politics is just a good proxy for general outlook. So whether or not I'm explicitly talking about politics, I'm going to be talking with people who are not, from my perspective, simply insane. I can talk to them about Die Hard and not hear that John McClaine should be prosecuted for executing innocent terrorists/theives. (#GermanMercenaryLivesMatter.)

I tried to test this theory with a question: Which is the more aesthetically pleasing building, the Chrysler Building, or the Empire State Building?

This is kind of a trick question because the Conventional Wisdom liberal-hegemony repeat-this-answer-if-you-want-to-be-considered-"cultured" answer is the Chrysler Building.

But the Chrysler Building uses an aesthetic I've never much liked -- ornamental, cheeky, frivolous, tarted-up. Decor imposed on the thing artificially, like the curlicues of a doily, rather than emerging naturally from the construction.

The Empire State Building is, to me, more attractive --mostly (but not entirely) an emergent beauty arising from functionality. Yes there are set-backs and such to give the thing some texture, but it's mostly just straight lines rising straight into the sky.

Anyway, a test of this theory showed some viability: most people, say seven out of ten, choose the Empire State Building. And I suspect those who answered the other way really didn't care either way and were just recalling what the liberally-accepted answer was.

So I don't really think it's nuts or divisive or hyperpartisan to use politics as a proxy to see if someone else is basically on your vibe.

3 I'd suggest it is as "addictive" as any other activity which is not physically compulsive, like commenting on Ace of Spades, checking your phone, or marijuana. There's no physical component as such, but is an activity which some people find so rewarding or pleasing that they find it difficult to do without.

I read a book once called The Royal Law of Liberty/. 'tis an interesting book taking Paul's writing that "to the pure, all things are pure" and running with it, hard.

Fascinating book, and I am still divided about my feelings on its material; I see the logic, it does seem reasonable, but it's a hell of a departure from traditional interpretations of Scripture.

Anyhow... sex addiction was one of the topics covered in the book, and whether or not it was a need as opposed to a want. 0.o Recommended reading, IMO, even if one's position is not apt to change, regardless of the reading; altogether fascinating presentation and definitely with merit in many other categories, if not in sex.

These people said, of themselves, that they had very poor impulse control.
Lots of them said that if they were not incarcerated, they would likely be up to their same behaviors.

So--- sex " addiction" --- I dunno, but what I was told was definitely compulsion, and obsession, and escalation.

General addiction tendencies. He's seeking that "high" which is why for him it wasn't just sex. It was also drugs. I think there is that psychological illness of addiction and it can just manifest itself in different ways. Gambling, sex, high risk adventure junkies, etc.

92 I really don't think winnowing prospective dates by political outlook is such a bad idea. I've been semi-interested in fellows until they start spouting liberal asides without provocation, that is the subject we were discussing had nothing to do with politics but the poor dears simply couldn't help themselves, they had to virtue signal, and this tells me the focus of their existence is ultimately politics. Not art, not science, not literature, not God, and apparently not my rack. No matter how wildly elliptical, it will always swing back to liberal pieties.

Not attractive.

That being said, there is something fundamentally wrong with Anthony Weiner. He is not right in either head.

107 Alternate theory: Everything is now so hyper-politicized that the only way we can ESCAPE politics is, paradoxically, to surround ourselves with like-minded individuals. I like spending time with other conservatives because it enables me to go for HOURS without ever discussing politics!

You know "safe spaces?" We used to have those. We called them popular entertainment. Liberals and conservatives could come together and relax while enjoying a movie or a football game, and nobody started screaming about fascism or communism or Literally Hitler. But now you're denied even those simple pleasures. EVERYTHING now comes with a Loyalty Oath attached.

"Safe spaces" are an attempt to recreate something from the top down which once emerged organically from the bottom up. It's the same old thing the left has always done: Destroy a necessary institution, claiming it's no longer relevant; discover it actually served a vital function; then try to substitute a stupid, inferior replacement that conforms to leftist pieties.

At that point, you choose between keeping your mouth shut, or stating your thoughts, which leads to embarrassed silence, or an escalating verbal conflict which will eventually lead to embarrassed silence.

It's one thing to deal with this with friends who you see from time to time, but I don't think I could do that day in day out. Might as well have an idea what you are getting into.

The problem with Art Deco is that when it goes awry it really really goes awry.

What's your take on Arts &Crafts, and Mission Style?
Posted by: tubal at December 09, 2016 03:54 PM (d6TTt)

I like Mission a bit more than Arts & Crafts though there is an absolutely lovely little Craftsman style bungalow down the street from me that someone bought and they're in the process of redoing it and it's clearly a labor of love since it was in pretty good shape in the first place and they are turning it into a masterpiece of the style.

Mission is a bit cleaner of line than Arts & Crafts. I'm a huge huge fan of mid century Modern but I'm far too, er, alternately neat of a person to live in any house that style.

Bander and I spent a lovely afternoon wandering around the great DC area being super judgmental of all the Brutalist style government buildings.

There are millions of men out there looking for a "normal" girl.

248 "The Chrysler Building is a triumph of Art-Deco."

I just looked this up. The Empire State isn't even original. The architect did the plans in two weeks by blowing up the plans for the 21-story Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem NC. "Every year the staff of the Empire State Building sends a Father's Day card to the staff at the Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem to pay homage to its role as predecessor to the Empire State Building."

Empire State isn't near a transit hub -- Chrysler is next to Grand Central -- and so, with the bad luck of opening at the start of the Depression, didn't become profitable until 1950.

Even as little as a decade or two ago there was a broad enough consensus on issues that weren't considered political that a red/blue relationship could... ahem... "coexist" But the Left has made everything political.

Besides... why the fuck would I spend five minutes with a woman who votes to raise my taxes, kill my children, dictate my car's fuel efficiency, nationalize millions of non-english speaking aliens, and import hundreds of thousands wouldbe Islamic murderers.

If I just want to grudge fuck a progressive or a feminist... well... there's always Tinder.

326 The Empire State Building is, to me, more attractive --mostly (but not entirely) an emergent beauty arising from functionality. Yes there are set-backs and such to give the thing some texture, but it's mostly just straight lines rising straight into the sky.

The Empire State Building was built in less than a year, IIRC, and came in under budget.

330 If I only limited myself to libertarians or conservatives, I'd die alone (I live in Boston).

My girlfriend is a Dem. But I have a feeling she's going wobbly. The thing with a lot of bubble-dwelling libs is, they don't really know any conservatives. You meet someone, you get to know and like them, and then it's "Wait... he's a conservative? But he's actually... cool."

Then you can start dropping little mind bombs. E.g. My GF has friends who are a couple of gay Republicans, and once said something like, "I don't understand how a gay person can be a Republican." I said, "Why not?" She replied with some of the standard boilerplate stuff, which I proceeded to - very gently - demolish. Little questions like, "How do you know that?" and "Give me an example." Most of the time, they're just parroting received wisdom, so when you actually make them think about it*, the supports get knocked out.

*Which is, of course, the reason for the whole "safe space" thing. Teach kids to assiduously avoid engaging with opposing ideas to try to innoculate them against this sort of thing.

341 Well, I have to admit I'm a little torn on this one. I've been diagnosed with SA by a couple of clinicians who are not shy about telling people to "move along, you'll be fine", and for a long time not even a 12-step program kept me "clean" of the "disease".

Then I actually started to treat some very serious trauma that came with surviving molestation and rape between the ages of 8-10 by "my best friend", a boy 6-years my senior. Including some pretty hardcore EMDR therapy that left me, on more than one occasion, a sobbing pile of snot-crying goo on my therapist's couch.

Now, really not much in the way of compulsion left to the "disease" - just 40-years of bad habits that need fixing and a bunch of, to be fair, more-or-less stereotypical "guy" behavior.

Sort of like biting your nails, only with the potential for HIV as a consequence.

So I suppose my experience tells me this - get treatment for the cause, not the "symptoms". But YMMV.

I think much of the LBGQetc spectrum is people trying to deal with sex abuse when young. In the past society tried to push people towards normal relationships which helped guide people to recover what they had lost. Now it celebrates whatever odd pathology comes out of this sort of abuse.

355 When everything is an illness, nothing is a sin and no one is accountable.

A recovering drunk, I belong to an anonymous fellowship that stresses the nature of alcoholism as a disease since it follows a disease pathology, the same arc: always, invariably. So the disease model is true in almost every respect, even physiologically. That said, the Program is designed to treat alcoholism as a spiritual sickness with physical ramifications. There is no wonder pill.

The same with sex; rather, addiction to it. I've met orgasm junkies. To use medical phraseology, they present just like alcoholics and drug addicts. It isn't a physical need they're trying to satisfy, it's a spiritual void they're trying to fill.

They are soul-sick and no physician can cure it and no psychiatrist can talk it away. That's all there is to that.

I think it is the MetLife building now. Still there.

406 Chrysler is way more deco. They are both deco, but come on.

Exactly. I played Bioshock just to stare at all the Art Deco, so make mine Chrysler. ESB is nice too, but it doesn't fully commit to the Deco.

408 OT, but I had no idea a movie was being made of one of my favorite creepy tech thrillers, Dave Eggers' "The Circle".

The Circle is a company very much like Google which designs a small portable camera that is deployed everywhere and on everybody because 24/7/365 connectivity is GREAT, right?

409 I tried eHarmony a couple years back and didn't trust their ability to match based on "values," since they matched me with someone who relied on The Daily Show for the news and proudly put it on their profile as "the one show I can't live without"... Not one of their questions on their lengthy list asked about politics, which is something rather important, I thought. Ended up deleting my profile after just a couple months. They tout themselves as having real people and 80% of the profiles getting matched to me were IP Freelies and Dick Boners. The ones that sounded real were pretty much liberals.

tldr: dating sites really need to filter by politics and make sure the people getting matched aren't trolls.

410 Chrysler, absolutely. Come on, that's about the most awesomely beautiful skyscraper ever built. And I thought that from the moment I first saw a picture of it, without having any idea of who did or didn't like it.

Needless to say, I adore Deco. Always have.

OT, from Insty: "The researchers captured, sequenced, and completely
reconstructed the smallpox DNA and then compared the strain to those
from modern samples dating between 1940 and 1977, when the last known
case of the disease occurred in Somalia."

What could possibly go wrong with that research?

415 I tried to test this theory with a question: Which is the more aesthetically pleasing building, the Chrysler Building, or the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building. Obviously.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at December 09, 2016 05:39 PM (zc3Db)

416 The question I used on eHarmony and a few other sites was:

So your moving into a new place and in 1 bedroom the toilet is next to the bathroom, like another closet, BUT you won't be able to fit all of your bedroom furniture in without destroying your feet. The other bedroom is spacious enough to accommodate all your bedroom crap but the toilet is a few steps down the hallway. Which one would you choose?

According to me, the answer is bedroom #2, so I would only go out with women who answered that way. I am 49 y.o. I have a girlfriend but we aren't shacking up yet. She needs to get her mind right about a few things.

417 My husband and I met on a daring site for conservatives. After enough feminists (male and female) and "neo-liberals" (no, I still don't know what that means), we both realized that the deeper your commitment to politically aligned principles, the more divergent your basic worldview. 10 years and kids later, I'm not regretting writing off the opposite political party in favor of what I know I wanted.

418 Not only gargoyles, but it has hubcaps as well.

Chrysler for the win.

419 I had to look up what the Chrysler Building was.

As it turns out, I always assumed it and the Empire State Building were the same thing. The differences never stayed in my memory or registered on me.

Oh well.

420 Chrysler Building: it's called Art Deco, and it's amazing. Have you ever been inside? And, it has the best damn Eagle gargoyles evah.
