Geraghty: Faithless Electors Aren't "Brave;" They're Attention-Seeking Narcissists Who Deserve Mockery and Contempt

I'm not even juicing that headline.

He talks about Chris Suprun, the idiot who recently announced he would break his solemn oath to vote according to the law for the candidate the state's voters chose, and instead substitute his own "conscience" and vote for a better Republican -- John Kasich, actually.

Geraghty points out that Suprun didn't have this self-created dilemma thrust upon him -- he actively ran for the position of elector, after knowing it was 99% certain Trump would win the state.

Thus, while he wants to be hailed as a hero, he should properly be villified as someone who lied his way into office knowing full well he intended to break his solemn promise to the voters.

Suprun didn’t just sign on for this; he actively campaigned for it. He urged other Republicans to trust him.

And he signed an oath vowing to vote as the state -- not he himself -- decided.

...

In such circumstances, faithless electors are not brave or honorable.... [N]ow they want to break their word, take a public stand, and be hailed as heroes by the considerable throngs of Trump critics. Don’t give them this. Mock their lack of foresight or stubborn refusal to accept the consequences of their actions....

They're preening narcissistic idiots who want to be rewarded for refusing to keep a promise, and they should be treated as such.

Hear, hear.

As I keep saying, there's a lot of picking and choosing among the #NeverTrump camp about which principles Sacred Honor requires them to strictly keep.

Honesty in word and deed seems to be very expendable principle.

The most important "principle"? Preening. Constantly. Unceasingly. Hysterically.

19 In a winner-takes all system, why in the world do we HAVE electors? Not the Electoral College...I get completely why we need the EC. I'm talking about having actual people do something which could easily be accomplished by math. If the state votes for x, all of that state's EC votes go to x. Simple. No need for meatbaggy skintubes to get together a month later and "vote".

Posted by: Buzzsaw90 at December 08, 2016 05:48 PM (EZDs2)

30 I feel my horns growing.

Serious question:

So, if electors aren't supposed to vote their own ideas, why have them? Why have people at all? If everyone is supposed to vote the way the state popular vote went, then why not just give out 'points' instead?

I can only assume that electors being 'faithless' is intentional and maybe even desirable.

Not to me, I'm still rocking a Trump Grin and occasional woody, but if we don't want faithless electors...why have electors at all?

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards at December 08, 2016 05:49 PM (MYX5P)

31 Mark Steyn had a great point yesterday: he said that the Left is playing a dangerous game with the attempt to make the Electors vote for someone else. If they succeed they are telling the people that there is no peaceful way to change the direction the country is going in. They are saying elections don't matter.

To which I would add, everyone on the right knows what the next step is to save democracy when both soap box and ballot box fail.

What I cannot understand is why they continue?

Looking at his Cabinet, it is a conservative's wet dream on steroids.

Would !Jeb! Or Marco pick Sessions?

I know that Katshit never, ever would.

I doubt Ted could pick the people Trump has picked. No way would the go along, get along crowd allow Cruz to do so.

Maybe that is the problem for many? Trump is not a go along get along President!

You are correct in saying that an elector can cast his vote as he sees fit. But the point of being a representative of the people who elected you is to represent their wishes in D.C. as you see fit. That doesn't seem to be what this dude is all about.

In the Federalist papers it is made pretty clear that the Founders intended that the public exercises certain restraints or correctives on their representatives, including the right to recall, replace, bring personal pressure to bear (since he has to live among them when he returns from D.C.) or...yes...publicly shame or mock them. I believe that is what's happening.

Well, technically the people don't elect the president. The states do. And the electors represent the states.

So if a representative of a state wants to go against the will of the people... well, unless there's a statute saying they can't, I don't think there's really a legal issue with them doing it.

However, it's a largely ceremonious thing, and the position is largely ceremonious, so... this guys just being an asshole, basically.

well, the system worked fairly smoothly when we had checks and balances in place.

The congresscritters in the house were the only votes elected by popular vote.

Senators were appointed by the state

As were electors

The idea being the people (the house) and the senate (the state legislatures) would represent "the people" and "the several states" respectively.

Then the electoral college was kind of a hybrid system, although there is no constitutional requirement that i know of that the state send electors who plan on voting as the people did.

The electors are responsible to the state legislatures, not directly to the people.

I believe electors should unify behind a Republican alternative, an honorable and qualified man or woman such as Gov. John Kasich of Ohio. I pray my fellow electors will do their job and join with me in discovering who that person should be.

Fifteen years ago, I swore an oath to defend my country and Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. On Dec. 19, I will do it again."

I hate this, but I disagree. People get the government they deserve. The elector did not make that choice, the people did. I'd also argue that an elector making a decision about who is supposed to represent the people of his state is not the same as a representative deciding to oppose or vote for a law that the people find distasteful.

He is essentially telling the people that they do not really have representative government now, and cannot choose the people they want to represent them.

I'm talking about having actual people do something which could easily be accomplished by math. If the state votes for x, all of that state's EC votes go to x. Simple. No need for meatbaggy skintubes to get together a month later and "vote".

Exactly. In the primaries, there is a reason for the actual meatbag delegates. If there is not a clear winner, the delegates dicker and work it out. But, in the case of the election, if there is no clear winner, it goes to the House, and they are the ones who do the dickering. Get rid of the electors.

Well here's what I mean.

Bill Clinton was a sleazy rapist scumbag with bad policy, but he was a good president, in terms of just doing the job. He didn't hate the country and try to destroy it even if it mean violating the law and shredding the constitution.

Jimmy Carter was stupid and incompetent and deep down a miserable racist, but he didn't hate the country, etc.

Barack Hussein Obama hates the USA and is trying to destroy it. He spent four years not just being incompetent and stupid, but actively violating the law, abusing power, and raping the constitution repeatedly.

Bad policy and lousy person I can abide, reluctantly. But Obama went beyond that and should never have been allowed another term. That's one of the main reasons the EC exists: to save us from that.

I don't think we shared the same opinion on a single issue, but research and citing and footnoting got me better grades on papers that she surely disagreed with than those from other students who never had to learn that and were trying to play to her politics. I definitely respect her for that.

That's specifically why the House went with a 4 month spending bill that includes almost nothing new save for a provision providing for a vote for Mattis. 215 About the representative ratio. The Founders put a lower limit on the ratio of people to representatives, but not an upper limit. (Some people will talk about the reciprocal, and thus say they put a upper limit of the reps to people ratio).

They had two ideas. They did want "raw faction" to show up in the House. If the ratio is too small, then you get that faction showing up directly. We'd call that "special interests" today. They wanted each rep to have competing factions amongst his constituents, not having the rep have only one.

Now, on the other extreme, you have "cabals of the few". This is a small number of people becoming a bunch of elite insiders.

The way it ended up, they put a limit on the former in the Constitution, but not the latter.

I've seen arguments that the ratio should be lowered. As it is, by law, the number of House members is set at 435. The ratio is whatever it has to be to meet that number, with those 435 being apportioned as needed between the states. This is why with each census some states gain and others lose.

Exactly. When we seriously talked about the EC going 269-269 and throwing it to the House, it honestly wouldn't have mattered.

The only thing that would have mattered is which side could threaten more electors families to get them to flip.
Posted by: rickb223

What I'm saying is, if the election "technically" went 269-269 but this guy flipped to Hillary and made it 270-268, we have one unelected guy that just chose our President against how the states actually voted.

Again, I'm not saying I want a popular vote to decide our President, but the idea of anyone making a decision that is the opposite of how the state actually voted over really any issue seems to me to be a HUGE flaw in our Constitution that we just sort of turn a blind eye to because it hasn't blown up yet.

271 Being an elector to the Electoral College after the general election is kind of like being a delegate to the party's national convention after the primary. IN THEORY, the delegates/electors are supposed to carry out the results of the elections. IN PRACTICE, it's an opportunity to participate in the mechanics of the political apparatus - rub shoulders with VIPs, shake hands with the nomenklaturi in order to check a box on the resume and run for city council, state assemblyman, county nominating committee - while possibly getting some swag, a couple of free drinks, and maybe hooking up. That is to say, it's a convention environment for people who are or want to be upwardly mobile.

The delegates/electors aren't really needed if the system works, and their presence is a formality, a mere going-through-the-motions. But who's going to turn down a free trip to a convention?

If it's a minority and they essential overturn the election, they should expect to me murdered, though that's almost a given either way.

290 Although the Founders intended for members of the Electoral College to be unbound and therefore able to "vote their conscience," the Texas election code reads "Vote Required for Election. The set of elector candidates that is elected is the one that corresponds to the candidates for president and vice-president receiving the most votes." (Sec. 192.005). Suprun was hinting before the November that he would not vote for Trump, just hinting though... wouldn't come right out and declare it because then he could have been de-certified. Another elector, Cisneros, also said he would not vote for Trump, and when Trump won the national election, Cisneros resigned. He will be replaced before the EC meets. Suprun knew the rules going in. He can't be replaced now unless he resigns and he must have known that, too, because there aren't any sanctions for "faithless" electors in the code.
