Sir Richard Grenville
Unknown

The Revenge, A Ballad of The Fleet
Alfred, Lord Tennyson

At Flores, in the Azores Sir Richard Grenville lay,
And a pinnace, like a flutter’d bird, came flying from far away;
“Spanish ships of war at sea! we have sighted fifty-three!”
Then sware Lord Thomas Howard: “’Fore God I am no coward;
But I cannot meet them here, for my ships are out of gear,
And the half my men are sick. I must fly, but follow quick.
We are six ships of the line; can we fight with fifty-three?”

The link goes to the full poem, which is a grand exposition of bravery and honor and fighting spirit and love of country.....

11 Sir Richard Grenville jacks off with his right hand.

Lord Thomas Howard probably sat for only the face portrait and let the artist fill in the rest. When he saw the spindly legs that resulted he murdered the artist, which is why said artist remains unknown.

38 I always enjoy the earlier court painters. Those people were literally wearing their 'wealth' and the artists had to depict it faithfully. I don't think most of the sitters cared that much about physical features, as long as they were shown in a lot of jewels and gold. Sometimes those portraits are really interesting -- the faces are not 'pretty', but by heaven, they are wealthy, ie, powerful.

I have been told by those in the know that, if you are a straight man in a ballet company, you'll be beating the ballerinas off with a stick such as Sir Richard holds.

And also that, if you have any sort of foot fetish, a ballerina is the last woman you want to indulge it with.

61 Elizabethan clothing looks so incredibly uncomfortable. Those ruffs around the neck - geez, and men today bitch about neckties. To these Elizabethans a modern day men suit would feel like shorts and a T shirt compared to those getups.

(Even more true of women's clothes. Pantyhose and heels are nothing compared to the 90 lbs of clothes Elizabeth I wore.)

65 Thanks, CBD, for these portraits. The face and hands, especially on the first one, are rather stiff but the detail, technique and those brilliant colors are wonderful. The second portrait is even more detailed and beautifully executed. I envy that ability.

I enjoyed the Tennyson link. Now I have to get out my volume of his complete works. "Ulysses" is always worth rereading.

Question: Have these threads made anyone want to try drawing or painting as a fun hobby? I have little to no talent for it but seeing what can be done piques my interest in drawing. Just curious.

Of course, I thought that "Light" was the name of the brigade, which was cool. I felt the shame later when I realized it just meant a brigade without artillery.

Also, as a child, it sounded gallant. I didn't know that riding into certain death on misunderstood orders to achieve no purpose was not gallant.

from Hakluyt's Principal Navigations, there is details from the log of Grenvilles Tyger that was following up on the settling of Roanoke.

In June they hit Hispaniola and went on to Florida

The 24 [of June 1585]. we came to anker in a harbour, where we caught in one tyde so much fish as would haue yeelded vs twentie pounds in London: this was our first landing in Florida.

The 26. we came to anker at Wocokon.

The 29. wee weighed anker to bring the Tyger into the harbour, where through the vnskilfulnesse of the Master whose name was Fernando, the Admirall strooke on ground, and sunke.

Iuly.

The 3. we sent word of our arriuing at Wocokon, to Wingina at Roanoak.

129 Speaking of fake news, it has been well documented that earthquakes and specifically earthquakes that occur in the ocean release greenhouse gases in huge quantities. The oceans are by far the biggest storage areas of greenhouse gases such as CO2 and methane and when these earthquakes happen the gases are released into the environment.

And yet, most of these earthquakes get little or no reporting and when they are reported on there is virtually no mention of the release of greenhouse gases.

But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

One of the things ELP, as a band, was all about was bringing classical music to R&R fans.

And grammie thanks for putting up "From the Beginning."

Have already listened to Greg doing "Still You Turn Me On" and "Lucky Man" at the California Jam this morning.
If you go there listen to those two as individual posts.

192 Streamed Amazon video (link n SIG) about Kermit Gosnel abortion Dr in Philly.  Real unstated story here is  he is a race eugenacist! Exterminating Hispanics, sterilizing White's and "cleaning up" the blacks.

Kept only the feet of white babies he aborted in a cabinet as trophies.   He talked about aborting black children with little hope in not become street trash. Hispanics had high mortality rates.

He had offers in NY and LA and DC but he stayed in poor philly as that was where he could do the most "cleaning."

White trash he immediately sedated any patient and sterilized and kept one white foot as a trophy. Black trash he sedated and sterilized the woman. Hispanics same but with an added frequent death. He'd of done same for whites but knew it would have brought inquiries.

Curious if any of you had come to the same conclusions?

It's not beginning, it's continuing. In the last couple months there have been earthquakes in New Zealand, Japan and Argentina and not California. All of these are related along the phenomena knows as The Ring of Fire.

Sooner or later, probably sooner, there is going to be some real devastation as the Pacific plates continue to shift. You'd think some enterprising reporters would be on this huge story but mostly we get silence.

I have an acquaintance who is a lesbian. She is very successful and she and her partner, another wealthy lesbian were all in for Hillary. They must've donated heavily because there were some terrifying pics posted on FB of the two them hugging Bill Clinton. After the election she posted something like this:

Please be respectful of us in our time of disappointment and sorrow. You who have never suffered discrimination and fear for being who you are can't know how sad and frightened we are right now. Blah blah blah, it went on this vein for another couple of paragraphs.

I just don't understand their fears. Hillary does not have a good record on gay rights. She was against everything on their agenda before reluctantly embracing it. She has a terrible history with other women when they were involved with Bill.

301 Billionth time it's been discussed here (though I've never chimed in), but yes the FB thing baffles me. When Zuckerberg was still in elementary school there were perfectly functional ways on the web to "keep in touch with people," beyond email.

I was never even a bit curious about it, but listening to my football-watching friends talk about it, and how their kids were sharing this and that, was enough to confirm my instincts. These people are nice but political cretins of the coastal clueless sub-species. And of course they and their ignorant children loved FB as a way to show-boat their ignorance and low effective intelligence.

There's another sub-current with FB that's sad. The need for attention and "sharing" everything that verges on pathology. Even some non-cretinous people I know have this pathology, bad, and it definitely lowers my estimation of these people. In one case a husband had to fairly sharply reprimand a wife to stop posting their out-of-town schedule/travel plans and dates, etc.

Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

Article 88 of the UCMJ.

325 Obama told the troops, "each of us has…the universal right to speak your minds and to protest against authority; to live in a society that’s open and free; that can criticize our president without retribution."
------------

Actually, that is not true. Sworn members of the armed forces making openly critical remarks of the President are engaging in insubordination, just as surely as if they were doing the same about their CO.

When one enlists (or is conscripted) many Constitutional freedoms are compromised. The military won't work otherwise.

332 There's another sub-current with FB that's sad. The need for attention and "sharing" everything that verges on pathology. Even some non-cretinous people I know have this pathology, bad, and it definitely lowers my estimation of these people. Interesting, because those who criticized Obama were often called racists - because they merely opposed his ideas and ideology - and except for a small minority (truly racists) - color of his skin never came into the equation. Yet Axelrod (may Satan be sharpening his barbed cock waiting for him) touts this even to this day.
So, it is OK to criticize and question Trump. But Obama - because he is the first black president - is tres bad.

Right now, he has a whole team around him trying to make him seem somewhat sane and coherent. He won't have that going forward. In many ways, he will be rudderless. Any time a microphone is shoved in his face, he will bleat out the first thing that occurs to him with regards to criticizing Trump, which will not go well for him because Trump plays the long game with discipline, passion, and zeal. Bobo is lazy and has to be force fed data by his staff, when all that stop, his shallow understanding and deep ignorance will be on full display and Trump will have a field day with it.

I can't speak for the others, but yes, MI uses basically a scantron form. You fill in the arrow next to your choices and a poll watcher stands there while you feed it into the machine. If it detects something wrong (like you chose three people for drain commissioner but you were only supposed to choose two), it will reject the ballot and it won't be counted; you get to fill out another. Counted ballots increment a little 7 segment LED counter and are kept in the machine.

That said, I have no idea how some precincts recorded hundreds of votes with only 50 physical ballots in the machine. But as far as I can tell, they aren't hooked up to the internet or anything.

disks in order to hack and reprogram voter machines.

Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at December 08, 2016 11:55 AM (IqV8l

Uh huh. Just like they do ATM machines.

And they walk right into the polling place, and sidle up to the machine, and then pull out the old floppy and put in the new one, and no one is the wiser. Because there is a slot for that, right there on the front of the machine. Right next to where you put in your bank card, so the poll workers can ID you.

But the problem is that there are so many Republican scam artists doing this, that they often don't know that a scammer has been there right before them , putting in a new floppy. So it really screws up the tally , because the machine keeps starting over with the new floppy replacement every hour.

Stein is supposedly getting her computer hacking training info from two tenured computer science profs at Michigan State.

Michigan State needs to review it's educational staff employment policies. Between these Back to the Future wizards and the physician who was teaching at MSU until the lawsuits started over his fondling gymnasts at the USA gymnastics facility, Michigan State has bigger problems than Mark Dantonio's withered football team.

Posted by: hogmartin

Old trick, in precincts without an opposition observer, the poll workers just cycle straight ticket Democratic ballot through the machine. They try and match the number of registered voters who didn't show up, so as to not be obvious. Sometimes they screw up, hence 110% precincts for Obama.

They use local hooligans to discourage Republican poll watchers from the precincts. Cars get damaged, etc.

I would argue that depends both on the your pipeline and refinery infrastructure.

It may be more efficient to pipe gasoline to where it is needed from a new refinery than to pipe crude to new refineries.

Granted, it also may be more susceptible to failure.

What we do now is pipe the crude to the refineries on the ports because we ship a lot of it overseas and that is more efficient for that goal - and permitting for new refineries is gowdawful.
If it were possible to set up smaller refineries on a pipeline, that might be a better option, and in a strategic sense get the industry both where it will be appreciated and away from the ports where it is currently concentrated.

I'm IN the military.

First, the original post claimed Obama was "calling on" military members to criticize the administration. You seem to think that there is something in the statement advising members to question their chain of command and orders. I don't get any of that from a reading of the paragraph- it's a pretty rote listing of the freedoms of the US. Pretty boilerplate.

Second, go read SGT Steins comments that got him discharged. It's much more than "not appreciating nuance". It's clearly over the line.
