Just When You Think That "Reason" Writers Aren't A Bunch Of Vox Writers With Hash Pipes, They Write Something Like This...

Trump's Problem With Free Speech: The billionaire bully chafes at the restrictions imposed by the First Amendment.

Look, the concept of libertarianism is marvelous, and these folks have occasionally written interesting and provocative pieces that are buttressed by classic libertarian thought. But all too often they resort to the leftist technique of vilifying people because of their associations. Here we have PE Donald Trump talking with the dictator of Kazakhstan. And they extrapolate from Trump's oft-stated desire and practice of suing people who say things he thinks are untrue -- to Trump arresting, imprisoning and possibly killing his critics, just as they say Nazarbayev does.

Last week Donald Trump had a nice telephone chat with Nursultan Nazarbayev, the autocrat who has ruled Kazakhstan since 1989, two years before it broke away from the Soviet Union. According to the Kazakh government, the president-elect "stressed that under the leadership of Nursultan Nazarbayev, our country over the years of independence had achieved fantastic success that can be called a 'miracle.'"

One aspect of the Kazakh miracle that Trump surely admires is Nazarbayev's ability to make criticism (and critics) disappear. As Trump's constitutionally contemptuous comments about flag burning illustrate, he supports free speech the same way he supports free trade: with preferential exceptions designed to protect the people he cares about most.

First...I doubt very much that Donald Trump initiated this conversation. It beggars belief that he woke up one morning with a burning desire to talk to a man he has surely never met, and whose name he probably didn't know.

Second..."Reason" is basing this on the press release from Kazakhstan, not from Donald Trump. I know this is a crazy idea, but a single-sourced account is pretty much worthless.

Oh...by the way, Kazakhstan gave up its nuclear weapons. You know, what every good leftist wants of the world. And some guy named Obama met with Nazarbayev in South Korea in 2012 and...get this...praised him for his leadership in nuclear non-proliferation.

I wonder what's different?

20 Whatever significance and value the Libertarians once had was erased by running Johnson. They've lost their way, almost totally as an organization. There was a time when they could have been great in this country. Hell, by running a reasonably intelligent freedom-loving person for their candidate they could have pulled real numbers and become a force.

Instead they coughed their way through a cloud of pot smoke like Spicoli stumbling out of his VW van and pushed that doofus into the limelight. A candidate so unserious and stupid he made Bernie Sanders seem positively impressive.

46 The libertarian party in concept is sound: liberty first, meaning small government and more local government with as few laws as society can get by with. I'm fine with that, I encourage it.

The problem is the bulk of its membership, nearly all it seems sometimes, are made up of people not so much in love with liberty as wanting to force society to accept their personal vice. They see liberty as being a way of getting away with what they want rather than a net good.

52 If Reason were actually libertarian that might mean something. Linking from the last thread I think that now that Trump is President we need to stop allowing the left and the idiots at Reason to keep on with their lies and fake affiliations. We need to stop being afraid to mock, humiliate, and disparage those who deserve it. As many have noted, since when is Reason truly libertarian. The minute you espouse open borders and gay marriage you no longer believe in personal property rights or limited government. When Reason takes one incident and turns it into hyperbole call them on it. I am so sick and tired of our side playing nice. The hyperbolic bull* needs to stop and we need to stop letting this stuff slide. Trump can only do so much, and we need to stop being so damn polite. It gets us nothing.

For what it's worth, the majority of the people who comment there, while not really pro-Trump, are relieved that he managed to beat you know who and they don't hesitate to let the various writers know when they've crossed the line into deranged stupidity.

I agree with most of your mini rant (well said) except for the gay marriage part. Liberty is the government staying the hell out of our lives. Marriage is a religious construct. The government should have no say in marriage whatsoever. Gay marriage, straight marriage should not be regulated by a government.
As Penn Jillette once said, I'm against all marriage even though I am happily married.

The problem is the bulk of its membership, nearly all it seems sometimes, are made up of people not so much in love with liberty as wanting to force society to accept their personal vice. They see liberty as being a way of getting away with what they want rather than a net good.

That was The Korean War right? So August 1877.
Posted by: #neverskankles

True story:

About ten years ago I was working at a newspaper. At the next desk over from me was a star reporter/assistant editor whom everybody praised as destined for journalistic greatness. She was considered "a genius" and wrote brilliant stories.

So, one evening, she peers over the cubicle wall, and asked me, without blinking:

"Which came first -- The Korean War or the Civil War?"

My sarcastic answer was, after a momentary shocked silence, "Well, that depends on which civil war you're talking about."

So she then uncorked a second jaw-dropping follow-up question:

"There was more than one?"

After several minutes of clarifying conversation I determined that she did indeed have NO idea whether or not the Korean War of 1950-3 came before or after the American Civil War of 1861-5, and she did not know that other countries aside from the United States ever had civil wars of their own.

Now? She is a professor at U.C. Berkeley.

No, not really. He said himself yesterday that he wants to work something out with the Dreamers that will make everyone proud and happy. This is not the language he was using when he was running. It's at least a little disconcerting.

Kind of hard to sit here and give him credit for things but then say he's not even president yet when he says or does something a little odd at best.

Personally, I never thought he was going to be as harsh on illegals as he said during his campaign. It was a complete reversal from what he's said for a very long time. But if he secures the border and starts deporting some of the worst and puts in things like E-Verify I can live with a little compromise.

Libertarians: "OK, so we hold all the women in common, and we allow any and all drug use, because who are we to decide that meth and heroin are bad for society, and we give every country nuclear weapons, so no one country feels threatened by any other ...

Marxists: "OK, so force economic equality on everyone, and the intelligent and industrious will carry the ball for the stupid and useless just because they're stand-up guys, and everyone will be happy because each person can decide each morning whether he'd like to be an astronaut, a fireman, a policeman, or a cowboy, just like when we were kids. A lot of of Big L Libertarians seem to have bought into Marx's idea that humans would live together more or less amicably if society could be arranged just right, they just approach it from the opposite side.

Incidentally, there is at least one historical society that could be considered a real-world example of a libertarian paradise, with a law-code but no executive, military, or police force - viking age Iceland. Quite a fascinating society, but not exactly peaceful...

No, with the sauce kinda.

When an Italian makes spaghetti, they immediately stir in a couple of big spoons/ladels of sauce/gravy. So the spaghetti is already lightly sauced. Then you add more.

First US Somali lawmaker gets 'Islamophobic threats' in taxi

"The first Somali-American lawmaker in the US has said she was subjected to "hateful" anti-Muslim threats from a taxi driver in Washington DC.

Minnesota Representative-elect Ilhan Omar said the cabbie threatened to remove her hijab during a confrontation on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old said the incident occurred just after she attended policy training at the White House.

Ms Omar came to the US from a refugee camp in Kenya as a child.

She made history and national headlines last month when she defeated a Republican to gain a seat in Minnesota's state house of representatives.

"On my way to our hotel, I got in a cab and became subjected to the most hateful, derogatory, Islamophobic, sexist taunts and threats I have ever experienced," she wrote in a post on social media."

Uh huh. Tell me more.

"Washington DC's Metropolitan Police Department told the BBC it was not aware of having received any complaint about the incident.

"At this time, no report could be located with the name you provided," said Officer Hugh Carew.

Responding to an inquiry on her Facebook page, Ms Omar said she would report the incident once she returns to Minneapolis, noting she did not feel safe as the driver knew where she was staying."

It absolutely blows my mind that they WON'T STOP WITH THE HATE CRIME HOAXES despite almost NO ONE believing them anymore.

Um, the ads have always been kind of an issue for Fox. Just like talk radio. I think Rush covered this several years ago. How the people selling the ads are a bunch of liberal women.

And I thought there was also a little bit of "bundling" going on there too. So maybe something like Fox News is its own ad entity, but MSNBC gets lumped together with NBC proper, so coca cola is going to have ads on there.

I have often thought the same thing hearing some of the ads on the Limbaugh Radio Show. Not that Limbaugh can't sell ads, but the local radio station carrying the program has ad time to fill also.

And on the internet, there is sometimes a glitch in the matrix where the automated advertising machine spews ads far longer than it should. You have to go to another feed to get Limbaugh.

371 I just saw the Warcraft movie. It was a huge hit in China (for some reason) but flopped hard here. Because of China it will probably get a sequel.

Best I can tell, it's close to being an environmentalist parable but not a Leftist one.

A necromancer has taken over Orc World and he wants to invade another place to survive. That would be Tolkien World, with elves, humans, and dwarves. The orcs aren't evil; they're basically klingons. The story hinges around whether the least-evil orcs and the least-clueless Tolkienoids can band together to unseat the necromancer, before his orcs make a ruin of another place too.

It was maybe a little over-plotted for what it was. The acting wasn't always great either, although the apprentice sorcerer and most of the orcs did well. I'd rate it somewhere around the first "Scorpion King" as far as silly and poorly-organised fantasy epic goes, except without the Rock, so it loses points for that.

When I was a kid-adult about 25 years ago, 1989, a guy and his brother murdered his pregnant wife for the $$ and to get out of his marriage.

Very very big local and national story. Charles Chuck Stuart killed his wife Carol by gunshot. Told the police it was a black guy who carjacked them.

People believed him.

Then questions were raised. The younger brother confessed to the murder. The police were about to arrest Charles Stuart and he ended up killing himself by jumping a very high bridge in January. Ouch.

His piece of shit brother ended up serving 5 years, released in 1997. Died in 2011 in a homeless shelter of an overdose.
