Opinion: David Petraeus Is Not Fit to be Secretary of State, Nor to Serve in Any Capacity in an Administration

I didn't have strong feelings about this one way or the other, but The Federalist's Christine Brim has pushed me into the #NeverPetraeus camp.

Petraeus's positions have been identical to Clinton’s for years, possibly up to the moment last week when he entered Trump Tower for his meeting with the President-Elect. Petraeus as Secretary of State is Hillary Clinton in a better pantsuit.

And that's why Petraeus is not just a bad choice for Secretary of State--he's a bad choice for any other cabinet position. He brings too much baggage, a damaged brand, and a long history of lying. He lied to the FBI and CIA about his handling of classified documents; he lied to his wife about his mistress; he lied to Congress about Benghazi. Why should Trump's transition team assume he’s telling them the truth now?

...

Petraeus's first impulse is to silence any criticism of Islam that could upset his Middle East clients. When he was commander of CENTCOM, those clients were the Islamic nations in the CENTCOM region. Not much changed when he joined the global financial firm KKR in 2013, as a "door opener" to Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and everyone else he had previously courted in his official government role.

But then in December 2015, Trump suggested a temporary ban on Muslim immigration. Petraeus's Muslim clients went ballistic...

Petraeus's op-ed reached CAIR-levels of outrage, scolding "those who flirt with hate speech against Muslims," "those who demonize and denigrate Islam," and "demonizing a religious faith and its adherents." A bravura finger-wagging performance, the op-ed also served as a timely audition for a future Clinton administration, with Petraeus warning "It is precisely because the danger of Islamist extremism is so great that politicians here and abroad who toy with anti-Muslim bigotry must consider the effects of their rhetoric."

...

As Catherine Herridge of FOX News reported, House Intelligence Committee members claimed then-CIA Director Petraeus misled them when he testified on September 14, 2012, two days after the Benghazi attack. Petraeus blamed the attack on a spontaneous protest against the internet video, though the Obama administration knew that it was a planned terrorist attack. Petraeus also claimed that the mortar rounds landing at the Annex in Benghazi could not be evidence that terrorism was involved, when intelligence experts had reported just the opposite. He was under investigation at the time by the FBI for his earlier mishandling of classified information, which created concerns that his testimony was influenced by the Administration.

Definitely read the whole thing. Petraeus is a Hard Nope for me, with a bonus GFY added.

Shit. Yeah, he doesn't need to be anywhere near a government position ever again if that's the case.

19 It's be like Trump wanting Hillary in that position - NOPE NOPE NOPE.

I do think one of the things that drives Trump is his wish that his foes bow down to him once he's vanquished them. He enjoys the Lamentations. He dangles the prize out for them, they grovel, he does whatever he was going to do in the first place.

35 I think it's a good thing that President-elect Trump is taking his time filling Secretary of State, rather than just tossing it to the first party hack in line as Obama did, twice.

That's an office with a lot of power for good or ill, and the last two chumps to haunt it no doubt have left a lot of skeevy deals to get quashed.

Because, I'm sorry; anybody trying to make the case that Hillary Clinton and John Kerry aren't anything but connected dimwits gets stared at, and then laughed at.

36 I was not a fan back when it wasn't popular . I thought the surge credit he got was overblown and that his strategy only worked as a result of the efforts of the criticized big base strategy. That strategy decimated the insurgency enough that allowed the small units to fight and stay later on.

Anyway, he's always been a Democrat and why would you want another Democrat as SOS?

Actually, it's prudent to utterly destroy your enemies. The Machiavellian thing of "never do your enemy a small injury". I think the Magic Scalp Weasel really understands that maxim. And he's pulling it off in spades.

The fact that it's gratifying to see them groveling and humiliated is nice, but not the primary goal.

He's liberal in his positions but I blame his academic background for that. He would also serve at the presidents discretion. So that he would undertake his own policies is again, ignorant.

That said, I think there are better choices. But I wouldn't rule the General out for others. The people questioning his integrity need to get a life. You don't judge a man by his worst moments you judge him by the sum total of his life.

This reads me a piece written by someone with an axe to grind. We would never put up with that from liberals.

I read a really great article a few hours ago about Snopes and the NYT debunking #pizzagate in which they don't really debunk anything about it but merely proclaim it is fake news. BINGO! His affair started in country, not just after he returned to the States. He was likely violating the infamous General Order Number One, while ending the careers of others who did the same. No cabinet position and I have long maintained, he should be recalled to active duty and face a courts-martial proceedings. If there is nothing there so be it, but I don't see a guy who is so dismissive of the rules as they apply to him, as taking a principled pause in his romantic leanings to his fan girl as he served in uniform. He is a smart guy, just not as smart, nor as savvy as he believes himself to be.

Yes, he can be recalled to active duty and he should be investigated for when his affair actually started. If it started in country, then he should face the music. I left Iraq before he arrived, I had the other genius, General Casey as the MNCF/MNCI Commander.
General Petraeus drafted the COIN strategy with??? General Mattis. It is a rehash of the Marine Corps Small Wars Manual with added vignettes from Vietnam and the British Malaysian campaign. COIN worked in Iraq, it did not work in Afghanistan and it was a mixed bag in Mindanao, Sulu and Basilan in the Southern Philippines.

The top performing country in all three categories was Singapore, while Hong Kong and Macau were second and third in mathematics. Japan and Estonia, and Canada and Hong Kong rounded out the top-three in science and reading, respectively.

The U.S. ranked 40th in math, 24th in reading, and 25th in science.

Which is ironic in some ways, given so much else about him, and it's certainly debatable, but I don't think it's the same as no concern.

167 According to Hot Air's media scanners, Petraeus is not really even in the running any more, so there's nothing to worry about.

On the other hand, the top contender is -- ta da! -- Romney. So there's that.

In truth, the Secretary of State doesn't set policy -- so it doesn't really matter what their personal beliefs are so much. (When Hillary pulled all her shit in Benghazi, for example, in truth she was just doing what Obama wanted her to.)

The personage of "Secretary of State" is simply supposed to be a mannikin with gravitas to charm overseas potentates. So, with that in mind, maybe Romney isn't such a terrible choice.

I believe there's precedent, but rather old, and a commissioned officer is basically on the hook for being called back to active duty for the rest of his life. Enlisted, not so much. I'd have to do some research to pull up the specifics.

However, as much as I loathe his actions I'm not sure about actually doing it. There's some really nasty implications if the Donks get their hands on a recent precedent of dragging people back to active duty to be court martialed. Remember, at some point they'll be back in power.

206 Romney used proxies against Trump in underhanded ways. Kept it up for a long time. Incited the Trump / Cruz War of the Wives. Risked throwing the election to Hillary. Romney is a cunt of the highest order.

That said, I don't know what a SoS has to do. Hillary was actually cut out of most things by Jarrett, and was mostly happy to fly a million miles to shakedown donations for the Foundation.

Does Trump need his SoS to renegotiate trade deals? Mitt could be good at that.

Does he need his SoS to beat on Iran? DoD may be the better heavy.

I expect Trump wants to engage Putin personally. Art of the Deal, baby!

Romney looks the part, and has some gravitas for coming close to being President in 2012.

Picking Romney would show Trump to be magnanimous and help in Western states in 2020.

Not a bad pick.

Was that the email by some woman who was talking about her own children getting a ride to a party with a family friend and joking that they were a handful?

I've yet to see a single thing that resembles evidence. Just tons of speculation that in some cases has proven wrong. For example, the whole child sex ring was supposed to be run out of the basement of the pizza place. One problem, the pizza place doesn't have a basement.

You'd think with all of this going on for years in broad daylight, one employee, one kid, would have turned up to confirm this thing. If they do, I'll give it some credence but until then it seems like a conspiracy theory cooked up by a bunch of guys at 4chan.

I did a search on the child's disappearance and discovered that the police sketch had been drawn around the time of her disappearance many years ago. (IOW some #pizzagate internet sleuth didn't just publish that image in an attempt to link Podesta to the child's disappearance.)

228 But like you, Independent George, I'm keeping an open mind on the topic but so far there is ZERO hard evidence of any actual crime. On the other hand, there is no evidence of innocence either. But in the US, you can't convict based on rumor and penumbras. Most of all, an actual victim would need to be identified, rather than the vague unnamed "children."

Posted by: zombie at December 06, 2016 01:11 PM (jBuUi)

From what I've heard from people who actually work in the system, prosecuting child pron/sex rings is awfully difficult. More than most would imagine, mostly for the reasons you state: need for identifiable victims, when many of them are by their very nature, unidentifiable.

So you have to be really really stupid, or the law has to be really really lucky.

This might be better suited for the court of public opinion, rather than actual, you know, courts. Especially since this thing seems to involve lots of various power people, in media, in government, and in other places where power resides.

Or so it has been claimed, recently. Except that a "local flavor" piece in the paper on Comet referred expressly to a basement in the past, as did other sources. Let's face it, the consequences of lies on that point or any others are nil, so why not lie boldly?

Have you even taken the time to do any research yourself? I uave.

Yeah their debunking is basically linking to a NYT piece which declares it to be fake news. If you haven't already, read the link I posted above about the NYT and Snopes debunking pizzagate.

Btw, Mark Thompson, the CEO of the NYT, was head of BBC when the Jimmy Saville thing broke. I read an article from the Telegraph that Thompson did his best to cover up the Saville thing.

237 Romney could play the super-civilized negotiator, the good cop. I could see that. So if--- (and that's a really big IF) --- one could forgive his nasty electoral-season behavior, he might be fine.

Using Romney in this manner would be a stroke of genius. I'm stoked for Mattis as SecDef, and Romney's Good Paladin alignment could round be an asset to the party, if used properly. Petraeus strikes me as an insecure hypercompetitive liar with poor taste in mistresses (receding hairlines have been out since the late Renaissance).

My doubt was not about Pizzagate, but Birtherism. I honestly don't know about Pizzagate. I just don't want it to end up in the same place as Birtherism.

The House page scandal I remember back in the 1980s, where Gerry Studds got away with boy-buttfucking and stayed in Congress, was disgusting.

But are we saying there is a ring doing this, that goes back decades?

240 "The Secretary of State is supposed to be someone who can say to a
foreign leader, 'Nice country you got here -- we wouldn't want anything

Talleyrand defined a diplomat as someone who can say "Nice doggie!" while reaching for a rock. I think Mitt could do that, and do it well.

If two crime scene sketches resemble you and your brother who looks little or nothing like you - that is a one in a trillion chance. If both of you were also thousands of miles away from home and only three and a half miles away from the crime scene while staying at the mansion of a known pedophile at the time of the crime - that is a one in a Quintilian chance that it is all a coincidence.

244 Ace,

Thanks for this post. I was mildly against Petraeus, mostly for his handling of secret information, but this quotation is unbelievable:

"It is precisely because the danger of Islamist extremism is so great that politicians here and abroad who toy with anti-Muslim bigotry must consider the effects of their rhetoric."

So...we mustn't say mean things to the people who are killing us because they might continue to kill us?

Fvck him.

If that were an actual thing, you basically couldn't have any actual humans in any of these positions. You definitely couldn't have anyone that was divorced, that's for DAMN sure.

I mean, I suppose I expect such stupidity from the prudish idiots at the Federalist who never found a morality tale they couldn't peddle, but good lord.

253 I worked for then MG Petraeus for two years. He got us sharpened for Iraq, and from one end of that dump to the other with very minimal casualties. My infantry battalion lost more guys to alcohol and motorcycles once we got home. He was rather nice every time I dealt with him while he was in command (of course I was four levels downhill) and a few times since. He inarguably is a genius.

That said, I trust him slightly less far than I can throw his little ass. He married the Superintendent's daughter, Holly being the daughter of then LTG Knowlton who retired as the four star NATO commander. His fellow captains at the 24th hated him. Three of those went on to be generals as well, being Casey, McChrystal, and Bolger, plus Kratman who was being groomed for stars but got out.

When he was a battalion commander here, his CSM hated him, and 2/187 had a better battalion commander. That guy didn't make general because he hadn't been a general's aide or have a father in law with four stars.

Like I said, he ran a good division. But his deputy and he got along like two cats in a sack. And BG Freakley retired with three, so he was no slacker either.

But the best summation of him was from one of his former peers. "Dave is in it for Dave. If you do a good job for Dave, he will take care of you as long as it doesn't cost him much. He is inarguably a genius that does good work. But never confuse his priorities."

That is why he spent a lot of time getting chummy with Hillary Clinton after she tore into him in the Senate hearings in 2007. He just wanted to secure that flank. But it is a potential enemy tie.

After the Broadwell thing, he's done. You get one fuckup at that level and he had his.

255 Butch, that was what got Chuck Swannack of the 82nd sacked and out of the Army early. He had a junior enlisted girlfriend, his wife busted him out to the XVIII Airborne Corps CG (O'Neil, IIRC), and it went to DA.

Swannack claimed it was because he crossed Rumsfeld, but that was bullshit. It was strictly his fucking around.

257 Petraeus can't be trusted! He is responsible for re-writing the deadly ROE's that caused the deaths of many of our soldiers. Then there is his regular attendance at the Bilderberg meeting where he has been spotted regularly. Whatever happened to him - he is no longer interested in the well being of our troops but has joined the shadow government bandwagon.
