Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mid Morning Open ThreadDomenico Zampieri (AKA Domenichino), 1623-1625 (CBD is off installing a new hard drive in his computer, so I'm subbing for him this morning) Lots of things going on in this painting. You can click on it for a larger version. Adam's pose brings to mind this passage: And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. So, in other words, "Hey Lord, don't blame me, it's your fault for giving me this dumb cluck of a wife." And men have been trying to evade responsibility ever since. Not that Eve is that much better. Look at her, she's pointing at the snake: And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.Eve: "Don't listen to that lazy bum! The snake tricked me. Stupid snake." God looks like he's just giving the finger to the both of them. Over there on the right, there's a lamb lying down with a lion. I think that's about to change. And I have no idea what those floating baby heads on lettuce leaves are supposed to be. Angelic beings, apparently. Or maybe some sort of appetizer. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Top of my head (looking things up is cheating) I see no way this is from the fifteenth century.
The flying cherub heads are post-LSD. Adam's body language is entirely modern and he has 70s hair. Also the medieval guys always got lions wrong, because they were going on descriptions of lions. They're cherubim.
In the Eastern Rite liturgies the cherubim are described as "six-winged and many-eyed" - scary, not cute. In iconography they tend to be angel's heads with six wings (but only two eyes that I've ever seen), and the austere style makes them look like beings Not To Be Messed With. Turning them into pudgy baby heads is not the way to go. Posted by: Annalucia at December 06, 2016 10:02 AM (a5bF3) 79

I do prefer the more expansive view of the Garden of Eden, with humanity having made a choice. Knowledge. Humans chose to eat the fruit, and God did not so much punish man, as lay out for man the consequence of his choice, which was: sin, pain and suffering.
So be it. We chose. Which can be viewed as disobedience, or it can be viewed as a loving God, leaving options there, and as an all-knowing God, aware of the choice man would make... and yet still, allowed man the freedom to choose it willingly. And it's a rather compressed painting, isn't it? All of the major figures are on the same plane. The only animate object not in the same group is the rather awkwardly placed horse.
The funny thing is that the lamb is complacently staring at Adam and Eve. The lion is in shadow and is slowly focusing on the lamb. Posted by: mrp at December 06, 2016 10:08 AM (JBggj) 103

I had a fable I'd written a long time back where demons, imps, gremlins, incubi and succubi were actually God's first test versions of humanity, before he gave them souls. Because, like a good engineer, God made prototypes to work out the kinks before starting a production run. After Lucifer was cast down in the aftermath of the War in Heaven, God gave the prototypes to the Devil so that Hell would have the labor force to work efficiently. As they didn't have souls, they wouldn't suffer, so there was no cruelty on God's part. Things don't quite work out like they were planned.... The 'message' in the painting is not exactly subtle. But I really like the arrangement and use of color by Zampieri. Having learned something about what was involved in creating the paints and other gear, I am even more impressed. The skin tones and color in the garments helps the viewer to focus on the central figures.
I have no idea what those flying heads are. Maybe they made sense to Italians in the 1600s. I couldn't help but smile as Adam tries blaming Eve who is blaming the serpent. God doesn't seemed amused. At least Zampieri gave Eve some perky tits instead of the gum drops earlier artists often stuck on her chest. I wish Zampieri had done some still life paintings. Given his ability to arrange objects and figures, his rather realistic style, and brilliant use of color, they would have been spectacular. Guess there wasn't a market for them at the time. 143. The RaMBam squared that circle. The knowledge of good and evil is a lower, lesser knowledge that was accepted instead of the knowledge of truth. Hence, our punishment. We do not say it is good that the earth is round, and evil that it is flat. No, these words are expressive of opinion, and hence not knowledge.

Why would you not eat of the knowledge of good and evil. Wouldn't that make you a simpleton without free will?
Possible for God and co to understand what committing an act of rebellion would mean - omniscient and privileged knowledge and all that. Obtaining knowledge of good and evil by committing an act of evil is the worst possible way to do so. Not understanding what sin is like "from the inside" doesn't make you stupid. Why would you feel shame at being naked? Didn't god just make you perfect? Naked people look good. Clothing does two primary things: protection from the elements/etc. and helping people have a framework for Boner Time and Non-Boner Time. Someone possessed of true divine innocence would not expect to need things to protect them, and would not need to have a distinction to frame Boner Time. Suddenly, that's removed, and a response of instinct sets in. "Ack, suddenly it's All The Time Boner Time! And the branches sting! And it's cold!" Not to mention that there's a certain level of "cover my crotch!" present in the vast majority of human society ever. If you want to add an evolutionary biology angle to it, there's some reason to believe that genes for "cover my crotch" behavior have been favored for good reason, and that the biblical story would be treating that. Posted by: Stringer Davis at December 06, 2016 10:16 AM (H5rtT) Knowledge can lead to a loss of innocence, hence why Adam and Eve felt shame about being naked and covered up when there was no reason for them to feel shame. Except they disobeyed God by falling to tempation of pleasure offered by Satan. The more worldly pleasure people consume the furthur away from God we become.... And we become aware of it and feel shame. God wishes for us to remain innocent like children (not consuming and giving into pleasures of the flesh and senses to replace God), not unenlightened of how things work, and there I'd a difference. By eating the Apple Adam and Eve learned nothing about how an Apple works, they felt pleasure and then shame this losing their innocense. Not to mention that there's a certain level of "cover my crotch!" present in the vast majority of human society ever. If you want to add an evolutionary biology angle to it, there's some reason to believe that genes for "cover my crotch" behavior have been favored for good reason, and that the biblical story would be treating that.
Posted by: Sporkatus at December 06, 2016 10:22 AM (eXSOZ) Do a search for 'penis gourd'. Probably a bit NSFW if there are any pictures. tl;dr: New Guinea tribesmen wear/wore hollowed-out gourds on their junk and basically nothing else. When missionaries came to the islands they got them in the habit of wearing actual pants, but they wore them with a huge gourd sticking out of them, because they felt naked without it. Not trying to make any anthropological point here, I just never pass up an opportunity to say 'penis gourd'. Posted by: hogmartin at December 06, 2016 10:31 AM (8nWyX) 197

Why would you not eat of the knowledge of good and evil.
Knowledge has a deeper meaning than intellectual comprehension in Hebrew writings. Its why they say "he knew his wife and she gave birth..." Why would you feel shame at being naked? Didn't god just make you perfect? It wasn't their lack of clothing it was their exposure. Before the fall, no sin means no self-consciousness, no ego, only humble love and comfort. No criticism or bitterness, no alienation, no judging others a less than you. Clothing and nudity is a symbol, a symptom of that exposure. For old-time Michiganders, the Detroit recount mess is a must-read.

I actually honor Adam and Eve. They were great heroes.
What makes you different than an ape? Give an ape a few more smarts, and you get Adam and Eve: innocents with no knowledge of good and evil. See, they couldn't have children in the garden of Eden. God set them up with two impossible commandments. 1) multiply and replenish the earth and 2) Don't take the forbidden fruit lest you die. When the serpent beguiled Eve, Adam was left with a choice: Take the fruit and be cast out, or refuse the fruit and watch Eve be cast out. He left his home to cleave to his wife. The question we should ask is not why did Adam and Eve partake, but why did God set them up to "fail" as the world has said ever since. The answer is simple: God did not and is not responsible for mankind having evil. It's our choice, made by Adam and Eve. But it is necessary to have a meaningful choice between good and evil; which requires evil to be here. Without evil, we are no better than a dolphin. All the things that make us human versus just another animal are things that are concepts: love, mercy, judgment, good, evil, hate, and so forth. That is the difference between us and the apes: our moral agency. We owe Adam and Eve everything that makes us human, for they chose to rise above their "smart ape" status and become humans. God thrust them out of the Garden for several reasons, not least of which was that they had to be on their own. Just like we want our kids to be on their own when they get married; so we aren't hovering over them and they make decisions mainly because we are right there. God cut Adam and Eve off from His presence so they could make their own choices and learn for themselves good from evil. Which, of course, required a way to become cleansed from the sins and mistakes we make. Enter Jesus. Without all of this being known and planned in advance, where Jesus voluntarily takes the punishment for our sins, this would all be nothing but a disaster. Adam fell that men might be, and men are that they might have joy. And without the tree of knowledge of good and evil, no man can know joy. So it was all necessary, and we owe Adam and Eve our greatest thanks and praise. Posted by: Vanceone at December 06, 2016 10:53 AM (J+l9K) 291

As a kid I never could reconcile the incest required for Adam and Eve to populate the earth.
The creation story is told for a very specific purpose, not to be an exhaustive history of mankind and all time, but only that particular sequence of events. Lots of other stuff were happening that's not in the Book, because it doesn't have to be. This is the history of Redemption, not the world. God could have created 10 million other people, but these were the representatives; they made the call regarding sin. Even in scripture it says that they were the garden which is a section of Eden. What was going on in the rest? We're not told. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 06, 2016 10:56 AM (39g3+) 308

Since Detroit is a Dim stronghold run by and for Dims, I am sure the recount will be deemed to be as originally counted, and to hell with any certification.
Selected, in other words, not elected Also - Hills is by all accounts a very angry woman who makes the life of everyone around her a living hell if something goes wrong. I suspect this recount is a way to mollify her that something is being done and is accomplishing something, and to get the fire off her support staffers' feet A lot of decisions made by her campaign and as her SOS stint were very poor and reactive, not thought out for effect and value. It had the air of being run benefit of the overweening conceit and cast-iron ignorance of an all powerful autocrat instead of maneuvers by someone who understands means, tactics, methods and goals. Detroit can't do a recount because hundreds of votes were added after the books were closed. I suggest that is the reason a law was passed that a recount cannot be done if the voter books don't match the voter roll sheets.
Normally, places like Detroit can fudge the voter books and add votes, but there is a time limit, which is why urban areas report last on election night. Once they submit their voter rolls, they can't add more votes. Posted by: Vashta Nerada at December 06, 2016 11:08 AM (U75nN) 362
If you really dig into Genesis and so forth, you'll find out that the Creation story and Adam and Eve are in reality heavily tied to the Jewish Temple and the ceremonies within. I think the Jews have some sort of key tying the days of creation to various parts of the Temple. And the Garden of Eden WAS a Temple, in many ways, keyed precisely to the parts of the Jewish Temple. In other words, what Solomon built was a conscious attempt at bringing people symbolically back to Eden and the Tree of Life. The Cherubim wielding their fiery swords were in fact printed on the veil concealing the Holy of Holies where the Ark of the Covenant and the Mercy Seat was.
That kind of thing. This stuff is so laden with symbolism and ceremony that if you ever hear people laugh at the "simple stupid garden of eden" story you should punch them. This story is part one of our own story of how to get back to God. We are all Adam and Eve, in many ways. Posted by: Vanceone at December 06, 2016 11:08 AM (J+l9K) 363

Michael Flynn has a good article about Genesis.
http://tofspot.blogspot.com/2011/09/adam-and-eve-and-ted-and-alice.html Consequently, what Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice were up to with Lilith among the 10,000 makes no difference, doctrine-wise. For that matter, what Eve was up to doesn't matter much, either! The anathemas of the Council of Trent mention only Adam.(^ They require belief in original sin and related doctrines; they do not require belief in a factual Genesis myth beyond the simple existence of a common ancestor. (Which is why the church consistently taught that mankind was all one species and all material beings with intellect and will, including hypothetical blemyae and sciopods, were "men.") The anagogical point of the Genesis story was to teach a doctrine, not to relate a history. The truths are not in the facts. Dr. Coyne has discovered that naive-literalists have a coherency problem; but that has been known for centuries. Indeed, St. Augustine pointed it out in the long ago: Aristotle illustrated the difference between the sensitive animal form and the rational human form by saying that an animal sees flesh, but a human also sees what flesh is. It is the difference between knowing this bright red crunchy apple perceived by the senses and knowing about "apple" conceived by reflection of the intellect on the many individual apples of experience. And so we might imagine Adam sitting around the campfire after an exciting hunt and remembering the bison they had chased and the moment of truth and he suddenly utters the hunting cry that signifies "bison here!" A cry that is in principle no different from those made by other animals, and possibly his fire-mates look about in alarm for the bison the cry signifies. But Adam has done something different. He has used the sign as a symbol, one that refers to the bison-that-is-not-here-but-remembered. He has become sapient and has invented grammar.(^11) Or perhaps he was just born that way and like any small child reaching seven has just achieved the age of reason. But in all likelihood, his ability to speak in abstractions -- to speak of 'bison' rather than any particular bison -- is coterminous with his sapience. Alas, none of his fire-mates understand, and he goes through life as lonely as a man who can speak when no one else can listen. He has become the First Politician. It is as if he is alone in a garden (since that is all that "paradise" meant.) For a while, he amuses himself by giving names to all the other animals, but that soon palls. Is there no one else he can talk with? Then one day he meets a woman-with-words. Perhaps a woman from another band or tribe who has coincidentally received the same mutation, or perhaps someone who has simply cottoned on to what he has been doing. Sometimes an environmental cue is required to activate a gene. Here at last is someone he can talk to. (Perhaps he regrets this later, when she will not shut up. But that is a tale for another time.) The rest, as they say, is history. Later, some of his descendents will fly to the Moon, still chattering away. Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at December 06, 2016 11:16 AM (FYrz1) 402

Well, that's true Christopher. I meant that the text and the temple and the temple worship are tied together in very real ways.
Yes, the temple was supposed to be an imitation of God's temple in Heaven. A place where heaven and earth touched. Here's something I've always wondered. If you interviewed a bunch of those Israelites who were there during the Exodus, what would it be like? They lived with the Angel of God in a pillar of fire just hanging around. Moses would do miracles relatively often. Could there be any doubt at all about the existence of God-- He was just over there, man. Walk outside the tent and look, and you'd see His presence. The people actually heard His voice. And yet today's world would try to commit them as clinically insane. And they would try to commit us as insane for doubting God. Their problem wasn't that they worshiped Jehovah, they just wanted to worship other Gods too. It's such an alien mindset to us today, in many ways. To have God there right outside your camp? For what, 40 years? Manna from heaven? The Israelites did not know how good they had it, that's for sure. Posted by: Vanceone at December 06, 2016 11:17 AM (J+l9K) 404

Rural privilege is real: they're privileged to not live in a craphole city, to breathe clean air, to not be ruled by a leftist overlord, to have fresh farm food, to have space and places to hunt and fish, etc. Very privileged, even blessed.
I'm sleeping like a rock for 10 hours straight and losing noticeable amounts of weight daily now. For the record, that's not healthy, either. Slow and steady is much better for your system. Not uncommon to find a dead squirrel in the laundry room (we have a pet door there). Great fun when they are just "mostly dead". Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at December 06, 2016 11:21 AM (di1hb) 425

This is actually something that gets All The Ignoring in Christian schools. "But, but, wouldn't Cain and Abel have had to bang their sisters since, you know, there weren't other people?" "We just ignore that."
"But but but" "What part of ignore that was unclear to you?" Meh. Nowhere does it say that God limited himself to just a situation that would necessarily involve incest. Sexual ethics is very important in scripture. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at December 06, 2016 11:23 AM (QlyN5) 427
I always laugh at the people who ask "Why does God pick these shepherds and farmers and common folk for Prophets? Why not someone smart?"
I answer, "God did. Who here understands Isaiah? Or Ezekiel?" So God picks the people without lots of schooling, because that's the only chance the rest of us will have to understand it. Posted by: Vanceone at December 06, 2016 11:23 AM (J+l9K) 428

I'm sleeping like a rock for 10 hours straight and losing noticeable amounts of weight daily now.
For the record, that's not healthy, either. Slow and steady is much better for your system. Lose too much weight too fast and among many other problems, your body thinks you're starving and signals fat cells to store more when you do get food. As for the whole incest Cain thing:
1) Incest is bad because our genetics can combine in nasty ways with too close a relative. But God created Adam and Eve; presumably their genetics were perfect. Notably, they also had long lifespans. It was only after the world grew so wicked that the Flood was necessary that incest likely became a sin. At the same time, lifespans dropped enormously. As if the genetic code was debased somehow. Abraham was really the last gasp of the long, long lifespan. 2) As I mentioned above, Adam and Eve is a recount of symbolic, religious history. It's not necessarily a full account of actual history. In other words, there most likely were other humans around. Either or both explanations are in my view valid. Posted by: Vanceone at December 06, 2016 11:29 AM (J+l9K) 446
Here's something I've always wondered. If you interviewed a bunch of
those Israelites who were there during the Exodus, what would it be like? They lived with the Angel of God in a pillar of fire just hanging around. Moses would do miracles relatively often. Could there be any doubt at all about the existence of God-- He was just over there, man. Walk outside the tent and look, and you'd see His presence. The people actually heard His voice. ======= So many Bible stories fit the "if you really, literally believed that--you'd be deemed insane today." At least to stupid people. Ancient lore has it that one of the Flying Baby Heads was dissatisfied with his lot and kept pestering God for a body and functional extremities. God tried to warn him but the FBH persisted and God eventually granted his wish.
