Thursday Overnight Open Thread (12/8/16) I Phoned It In Edition

Sometimes reality (aka "the job") interferes with the ONT creation process.

How do you say Don Draper in Finnish? Quite the advertising slogan.

An unwilling tourist, Adolf Hoffmeister and his guide to being a refugee. Remarkable and interesting man.

In 1939, Adolf Hoffmeister (August 15 1902 – July 24 1973) emigrated from his native Czechoslovakia to Paris, a city he had fallen for after his first visit in 1922. It was on that trip he forswore his legal career and vowed to be an artist. When France fell to the Nazis, Hoffmeister, an avid anti-fascist, was arrested and jailed in Paris’s La Santé prison – an episode he would recall in Vezeni (1969) – and later transported to Southern France and Morocco, where he was incarcerated in the Ain El Ourak concentration camp.

Shit over substance. Justin Bieber possible Grammy Winner. David Bowie Not. Why the ONT doesn't care for Top 40 crap.

Tonight's Musical Interlude

RIP Greg Lake

An atheist's view on Christmas. Adam Corolla talks about Christmas and the American anti-Christmas culture. NSFW-Language-Muslim bash

The ONT thinks you could switch the word, Christmas with Thanksgiving, Columbus Day, or any other traditional holidy and it would apply to the $5^2 *!*#! people he talks about.

Do you want to feel safe or do you want to feel good? That's a damn silly question. Here's hoping that General "Mad Dog" Mattis rips this piece of crap up on January 20, 2017 shortly after Trump is sworn in.

For example, as of 2015, only the Department of State and USAID Civil Services were more diverse in terms of gender, race, and ethnicity than the Federal workforce as a whole. When comparing the agencies' workforces to their leadership personnel (Senior Executive Service (SES) or its equivalent), all agencies' leadership staffs were less diverse than their respective workforces in terms of gender, and all but DOD enlisted personnel and USAID Civil Service had less diverse leadership in terms of race and ethnicity.

The ONT doesn't cover the entertainment industry on any regular basis. Amy Schumer in talks to play Babe The Pig Barbie.

“Barbie” is a global brand power house with sales of over $3 billion dollars worldwide. Barbie has taken on more than 150 roles through her more than 50 years as a doll, including princess, president, mermaid and movie star.
And now an obnoxious big mouth tubbykinz who won't leave the U.S.A.

It also goes to show you that original thoughts and ideas in Hollywood are pretty much non-existent. A movie about a doll that has been around for decades?

Go caroling with The Group. Eggnog Valu-Rite and fruit cake provided for platinum members and/or those who can sing in the key of E Minor.

Lack of supervision led to tonight's Genius Award Winner

The Feel Good Story of The Day

94 Hey everybody.

Well, I got into it again with Jeffrey Wells, but not at his site this time. Got into it again with him at Twitter. I guess we should just get a room, we can't quit each other. :-)

He posted late last night at Twitter, a link to his latest tantrum against Trump's appointee for the EPA. I started to respond directly, then just quoted his tweet and added on top, "Bitter Stalinist tears are delicious."

His response to me this morning? "Demonic, deranged."

I figured I may as well respond since he was pissed and then tweeted back to him, "LMAO. Good descrip of your own side. Bet it pisses you off Trump met with Leo DiCaprio." (Wells licks Leo's shoes because of his climate activism.)

Anyway, nothing since then. Probably banned from Wells' Twitter now as well. How will I go on?!?!? ;-)

120 Who is this supposed Barbie movie going to be for anyways? Little girls? Do you want them seeing anything else Amy Schumer has done? She's vulgar and talks constantly about sex.

Compare that to let's say Tim Allen. He was a fairly blue comedian. But he struck it on a family sitcom, not something solely for kids. No way in hell he gets The Santa Clause or Toy Story based on his stand up comedy. He got that because of Home Improvement which converted him from adult stand up to family show comedy.

Schumer's resume is shitty stand up and awful movie about her sex life.

My mom worked on the phone exchange at the local Navy hospital during the war, she talked about setting up cross country calls, which required a certain amount of negotiating with various hub operators.

She also manned the local phone system as the night operator at the local exchange based on her experience. The small towns resisted the automatic dialing because the night operator would act as the contact for fire and police and the phone company paid for it.

235 I have a bunch of old dial phones which I am gradually restoring. In service right now in our house is a Western Electric 302 (the "I Love Lucy" phone), a first-generation WE 500 with the metal dial ('50s and early '60s standard), a WE 102 (their first handset phone) and a Stromberg-Carlson candlestick with no dial. The 302 is the best-sounding phone by far, because the 500 was purposely crippled to avoid the 60-cycle hum that used to be a common presence in phone lines. I have a huge wood hand-crank wall phone waiting to go up, but it needs thorough re-wiring to work on a common-battery line.

Of course, virtually the only phone calls we get on our home line are spam calls. All our friends and family call us on our cell phones.

242 278-1327

Last number at the apartment in San Diego where my Mom lived, and from where I left to go active duty with the USAF in '76.

Area codes out there changed a bit, since then.

I was there when the Los Angeles area kept it's 714 area code, and San Diego had to give that up and take on the 619 code.

Imagine that. Well into the early 1970s, both L.A. and San Diego's combined telephone numbers were not enough to deplete one single area code exchange.

And I used to keep a pocket directory, in which I kept important numbers, written in as small a hand as I could write and see, so that I'd not fill up that book too quickly.

What's boggling, isn't how far we've come since then, but how far things will go in the years to come. And what price might be paid for that progress, in terms of loss of privacy, anonymity and individuality.

Think Bob at NSA has been a drag? Just wait till Amazoooglepple gets their hooks really set into your lizard brain stem.

And then long for these, the good olde days.

In a certain era, I could have predicted with absolute confidence that that phone would have been a Princess Phone. That phone was actually a clever piece of engineering -- they made the dial, which was in the handset, smaller, while keeping the finger holes the same size, by having the little hook that catches your finger at the end of dialing a number move.

Posted by: buzzion at December 08, 2016 10:24 PM (z/Ubi)

A local radio host played a segment from a current Tim Allen show where he is going to give a speech at his daughter's college, but first she has to check his speech for microaggressions. It was funny and dead on the mark.

Tim Allen might very well be a lurking Moron, is what I'm saying.

426 Party line. Everyone on the block shared a single line, so when you wanted to make a call, you picked up and determined if there was a dial tone. If not, somebody else had the line and you waited. If it was an emergency, you said so, and they let you have the line. We had about 6 families on ours.

My father had a black rotary wall phone in the garage, where he spent a lot of time puttering around. After he died, I noticed I was getting a quarterly bill from AT&T for the phone rental. This was separate from my monthly phone bill. It was about $10/quarter, and some quick math told me he had spent more than $1000 for it over the years. I called to cancel it and they sent me a mailer to return the phone.

It's a shame; I would have liked to keep the phone, but I didn't want to pay just for having it.

Yankee Fifth, there were only so many connections available in the old electro-mechanical systems, so unless you paid a premium you were on the same line as two or three (or six) other houses. You could ID your own calls by the rings, usually it was a series of short or stutter rings together, or a pattern of rings.

The exciting thing was when you needed to get or make a call and the neighbor did not want to get off his extended call, or since it was not considered an actual call, two of your neighbors were having an extended conversation without a charge.

Early units were dual band affairs with the base unit transmitting to the hand held at 1.7 MHz and the hand held transmitting to the base unit at 49MHz. 504 I was just reading, about the Dallas Police and Fire Pension Fund. They've suspended lump-sum withdrawals. The Mayor had to lean on the pension board to do it, because there were $154M of withdrawals pending. It was like a run on the bank, people trying to get their promised money out before it went belly up. $500M had already been pulled out since it became known things were going south. The well was gonna be dry if they didn't act.

This pension thing, it's a gonna blow.

You are gonna see much squealing over this, and calls for a federal bailout (which means Uncle takes all the promises and adds that to the $20T of debt he has already).

That phone was actually a clever piece of engineering -- they made the

end of dialing a number move.

The Atlas had a pretty spotty success record in those days, so everybody was on pins and needles. A rocket with that failure rate would never be considered suitable for flying humans today, but it was all we had back then.

I had just turned four years old at the time. I dimly remember being in the living room with the TV on, and my mom leaving for a dentist appointment. That's all I recall about that day.

Godspeed, John Glenn.

Recall there was a controversy over a gay group participating in the St. Paddy's day parade, and it was cancelled that year, and we picked up for the law firm involved in the suit.

A fellow called up - sounded like he was DEFINITELY from Eire - and proceeded to threaten to bomb the building and everyone in it, and set the cars in the parking lot on fire for good measure. A group called 'Celtic Defiance,' he said, would be doing this to protect the protect the Church and its people.

'Now, you sound like a fine young man,' he went on 'and we certainly don't mean to harm anyone who doesn't deserve it, so I suggest you think carefully about the kind of people you're working for.'

'Sir, I'm just with the answering service. i don't even know who these people are.'

'Oh, I'm so sorry, son,' he said, and sounded exactly like what you'd expect a charming Irishman making a sincere and heartfelt apology to sound like. 'I didn't know. Would you please be good enough to make sure they get my message?'

'Yes sir.'

'Thank you, my lad, and God bless.'

566 I'm reading some of the details of this Dallas Pension Plan. If any private sector financial group had offered such a package, they would be in jail. Well, if they weren't well connected Democrat donors, I assume.

They promised them at least 8% return on their money. And they came up with some sort of thing where they could "retire" "on paper" somehow and still work, yet draw that sweet pension money somehow.

The proposals to fix it, which are gonna make the piggies squeal include just wiping out that faux 8% return they got on paper, and giving them some return equal to what the fund actually made on the market. For those that have already drawn that sweet 8% (or better), their future benefit payments will be cut to make up the difference.

Those promises were lies, and now the reality is going to assert itself. Sorry, you didn't make 8%. It was a lie. Too bad, so sad. Reality's a bitch.

There will be lawsuit after lawsuit over this. Which means the lawyers will get some of what is actually left.

Back in the day-- the 70's through the early 90's-- auto workers had sweet, sweet pensions. Dental, opitcal, everything you could dream of.

One day, when my dad was on super expensive heart meds and had no prescription coverage, a guy in line in front of my Mom was whining because his co-way went from $2 to $4. My Mom had to grit her teeth, since she was going to shell out close to $300 when that was a large sum of momey. And forget about dental and optical; you couldn't get that if you were self employed.

IIRC, one of the reasons why Cali is so fu#ked up is that teachers from the rural areas would take a job in SF or LA for their final year before retirement and would retire at that pay rate. Say they were making $75K a year in small eastern town of Cali, move that one year to big city Cali at $125K, retire back home to small eastern town Cali at the $125K pension rate.

ZIRP has killed the pension funds as much as anything, like anemic economic growth.

The ones retiring now and taking the lump sum aren't too concerned about their fellow "union" workers at this point.

I worked on one of those way back when. Near a military base, so lots of pay phone calls. You had to count the money as they deposited it - each coin made a distinctive sound (deet-deet was a dime, IIRC) and if you lost count you had to push a button to return the money and ask them to start over. So fun. So many stories. People were generally a lot more polite back then it seems to me. And that Bell training got me lots of good temp jobs down the road.

And made with the dread dry bearing chatter when spinning down after the switch was shut off.

Got it at a yard sale, and it has done a lot of work for me, so it has earned its keep. I wonder if Harbor Freight sells replacement motors, and if they are cheap enough to make them a good choice over an entire new saw (about $110, last time I looked)?

If one knew what a petar(d) was, one would not say "hoisted on" it. One is hoisted by it.

658 Chi, I know you do handyman type stuff so a refrig fan is no biggie at all. There are two fans on a fridge; one to move air over the evap coil on the inside, and one to cool the condenser/compressor on the outside. The cooling fan is usually down near the bottom where the air vent is. That's probably the bad one for you, with the sound 'near the crisper drawer'.

There are youtube videos on replacing the fans for most makes and models.

662 The "check's in the mail" may live on, with the meaning of the idiom understood, but not the literal meaning from which it's derived. There's a lot of phrases like that

We've got half an ONT of phone discussion, so... To "dial" a phone? Only antique phones in grainy jpegs have dials. Heck, we rarely "button" phones nowadays; they're mostly "touchscreened". Or "talked to".

(Yes, I'm old enough to remember "the number you have dialed is a party on your line; please hang up and wait for the party to answer...")

And he was nervous the first time he tried perching the sword on his arm with the tip by his neck, but he soon got the hang of it and was smiling and lost. I saw a man, pushing 80, grinning and laughing as if all the years had fallen away and he was a boy again. Really something to see, when people set themselves free.

New dialogues came out weekly during the NFL season until about a year ago.

'The world,' he said to me last week, 'is not kind to girls.' I took this as his tacit approval of the way I am raising my daughters, which reflects well, I hope, on my intentions with regard to his eldest daughter, my beloved angel.

He still calls me 'that man' or 'Mister Cat,' when in conversation with his wife or sisters, but calls me 'the Cossack' when talking to my angel. I'm no Cossack, but it's quite flattering, all the same.

739 Wow...just found out I might be a dad for the first time. Incredibly happy and absolutely terrified at the same time. It's too early to share it publicly -- they say you should wait three months -- but I gotta tell someone. Figured I might as well tell the Horde.

It was totally unexpected yet not at all unwelcome! Yeesh -- 2016! Cubs win World Series, Trump elected president -- now this! I should buy a lottery ticket tomorrow to see if the streak holds!

740 Well, okay, got the table to come back up, with only 4% charge, which is odd. But it's up to 7% now, so it seems to be charging -- but I'm going to turn it off and head for bed to recharge my own batteries.

New Webworkshop video going up tomorrow - this episode's a little odd... but, then, they all are. Check the website or the youtube channel 'cause you don't want to miss a single episode. (hahahah - choke)

741 Damn, Horde. Oldest sibling of mine called me an 90 minutes ago to talk politics and the media, both of which she hates and never talks about.

Long story short the gaslighting got to her. She is convinced the MSM is all lies filled with actors to fit their narratives. I can't say I disagree with her for the most part. Told her to get away from social media, which pumps MSM narratives.

She told me that the guy that went to investigate Comet Pizza with a gun is an actor listed on IMDB.com, and he just ran over a 13 year old kid 10/25/16. And his father writes sick horror movies, one his son stared in called The Mill. He lived in Haiti working for a Non profit for abused and victimized children, sound familiar looking at the Clinton Foundation. And he's a deacon who teaches Sunday school for 16 years. A deacon who writes and produces violent horror movies. WTF??!

But they are likely not "official." You know, the actual CD quality versions or quality music video production. Prince was a real hard ass about getting his stuff pulled from youtube. He even had a video of a baby dancing to 1999 pulled.

"We had a deal, Satan. I sell you my soul, you make me President."

Predictable, like a story.

The gunman is an actor named "Edgar Maddison Welch" with an IMDB page. His daddy produced and wrote many many movies and did one called The Mill, which is son starred in. Oh the gunman ran over a 13 year old on 10/25/16, so there is that. And the day before the street cameras were turned off or away from Comet Ping Pong because the day before people reported it who were apparently watching who went in and out. Oh and the media witness is a Muslim immigration lawyer from MY who just happen to take a day trip that day with the wife and 3 kids to eat there for the first time. The gunman's dad is a deacon of 16 years who writes horror movies and teaches Sunday school. He won father of the year. He lived in Haiti for a while working for a Non Profit group that worked with abused and victimized children. Lots of work with the children.

Read James Alefaontis interview on NPR. It is completely scripted bukkshit where he plays the victim for posting pedophile suggestive pictures and says he could sue people for decimation but it's too much trouble so he calls for anonymity of the internet a the problem, like Obama in 2011 with his internet ID.

Nothing fishy about this production. The end goal seems to be self censorship. Enjoy your regularly scheduled manufactured news.

792 RA4-1983 (RA for the Raymond exchange in Jacksonville, FL). Indelibly embedded in my mind for most of my life. We had to memorize our full names, address and phone number in school. Probably second or third grade. The phone was a big, black thing with a rotary dial. Children were not allowed to look at, touch or speak on it. No answer machines. Usually, it rang until someone answered it. If dad was on the john we didn't touch it. It rang until he came out and grabbed it.

I still get paranoid about making long distance calls. Long distance was reserved for IMPORTANT business. Like someone in the family far away dying. When I got a long distance girl friend my mom made me pay for my long distance calls. We wrote lots of letters.

I worked for a pharmacist in the 60s. He got tired of running all over the house to answer the phone. He had 8 phones. One in every room (including the john). He would stop what was happening (including dinner), pick up the phone, write down the prescription on a pad that was always next to the phone, hang up and re-start life again.
