Monday Overnight Open Thread (12/5/16) Smorgasbord Edition

One of the ONT's favorite Holiday baked goods is fruitcake. Yes, fruit cake. Mamma Misanthropic use to make it for Papa Misanthropic and her favorite son. Now Mrs. Mis. Hum. makes it using the same old time tested recipe from The Electric Company-Home Service Bureau 1954 cookbook.
1 cup sugar
5 eggs
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup sour milk
1/4 cup grape juice
2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon mace
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 pound citron
1/2 pound chopped pitted dates
1/2 pound candied orange peel
1/2 pound candied cherries
*1 1/2 seeded raisins
1 pound seedless raisins
1/2 pound almond slices
1 pint brandy or your choice of whiskey or rum.
New clean cotton dish towels (Flour sack towels)
*Optional
1. Have ingredients room temperature
2. Line greased pans with waxed paper. Grease paper.
3. Cream butter well. Add sugar gradually.
4. Add eggs one at a time. Beat well after the addition of each. Add molasses, sour milk and grape juice.
5. Dredge fruit and nuts with part of flour.
6. Sift remainder of flour, spice and baking soda together. Combine with first mixture. Add floured fruit and mix well.
7. Spoon into pans
8. Bake at 275 degrees. See time chart below.
9. Makes about 7 pounds
**10. Soak dish towels in brandy.
**11. Wrap completely cooled cakes in brandy soaked towel. Wrap with cellophane wrap, then aluminum foil and place in cool dry location for 2-3 weeks. Dig in and enjoy. ** Mamma Misanthopic's special touch. 1-2 pound fruit cakes-about 90 minutes per pound
2-4 pound fruit cakes-about 60 minutes per pound
4-8 pound fruit cakes-about 45 minutes per pound
8-12 pound fruit cakes-about 30 minutes per pound
Over 12 pound fruit cake-about 20 minutes per pound
What goes well with fruit cake? Eggnog of course!! Remember, if eggnog was good enough for General George Washington, it is good enough for you. Here is his recipe for eggnog.
One quart cream, one quart milk, one dozen tablespoons sugar, one pint brandy, 1/2 pint rye whiskey, 1/2 pint Jamaica rum, 1/4 pint sherry—mix liquor first, then separate [a dozen] yolks and whites of eggs, add sugar to beaten yolks, mix well. Add milk and cream, slowly beating. Beat whites of eggs until stiff and fold slowly into mixture. Let set in cool place for several days. It's kind of a lemony thing, but bigger. It's part of the Jewish Sukkot holiday, you hold a citron (etrog) and a palm frond (lulav) and shake them at things. I've never seen anyone cut one, much less eat one, and I have no idea where the hell they get them because I've never seen one in a store.

6 eggs, 2 extra egg yolks, 10 Tbsp sugar, 1/4 tsp salt, 4 cups whole milk.
Start by whisking the eggs, egg yolks, sugar and salt in a large pan
until well-blended. Keep on whisking while you slowly pour in the milk
until it's completely blended. Set the pan on a burner and turn it to
the lowest possible setting. Whisk continuously for 25-30 minutes or
until the mixture reaches 160F and will coat the underside of a spoon.
Remove from heat and strain into a large bowl. Stir in 1 cup bourbon, 1 Tbsp. vanilla and 1/2 tsp. grated nutmeg.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
When ready to serve, whip 3/4 C. heavy cream and fold into the mixture.

Pannetone. They decide the colors and their codes, right? about 5 years or so ago, the Pantone color of the year was a lovely shade of tangerine orange. The year after was a pretty shade of emerald green, but I preferred the orange. When the Pantone colors are announced, designers and artists scramble to incorporate those colors into their work.

An Italian-style buffet, with eggplant parmigiana.
Most of the time when I step up to a buffet-style meal, it's after a day of pretty hard work for an event at which the buffet dinner is just a part of the whole thing.
And I'll see these nice-looking breaded cutlets, and I'm thinking, "Yeah, put one of those on some noodles, pour some sauce over that... got some nice chicken parm, right there! Yeah! That's gonna be awesome!"
And then I take a bite of that cutlet... and it turns out to be a hunk of breaded snot.
And I'm thinking, "Why? Who would do this to me? Why hast thou forsaken me, Lord?"

Here's something simple that no one will have seen:
Buy a box of Triscuits, some garlic sausage (or kielbasa), a little tube of wasabi and a jar of sushi ginger. These last two are in the Asian section of most grocery stores.
Slice the garlic sausage about 1/4" thick.
Put some Triscuits on a plate, and a little dab of wasabi on each Triscuits. Put a sausage slice on the wasabi, and a thins slice or two of sushi ginger on top.
Do not, under any circumstances, tell people about the wasabi, when you offer them your exclusive Ukrainian Sushi. Allow them to discover it for themselves.
(This is actually really good, once you get your proportions right).

Eggplant and okra both have multiple textures:
Eggplant: Very soft and creamy/some bite
Okra: Very soft and crunchy
The only thing wrong with eggplant and okra is that both have an in between texture that is awful.
Okra: Goopy, stringy, you swallow some and find out that what you swallowed is still connected to what's in your mouth so you sort of gag.
Eggplant: Too firm/rubbery and too watery. You didn't salt/squeeze beforehand to get enough water out, and/or you didn't cook long enough.
So you just don't eat either of them in their horrible-texture phase

Oh boy did I get in trouble today. Brought home a load of cookies left over from our Christmas open house.
Wrapped on the counter the dogs never bothered anything like that. Well last night they ate over 3 dozen cookies! And broke a nice gold plate they were on.
I'm in the doghouse cause I didn't shut the bedroom door when I went to bed.
Sheet happens, but it's nice if you are forgiving over small sheet like this. Life amounts to more than this!

It turned out to be English mustard.

Prayers said. People really step up to the plate in situations like this. Quite a few years ago, a family I knew was in a horrible accident where both parents were killed and the 2 girls were injured to the point where they were out of school for months. Everyone came together for those girls. The single woman from across the state who had been named guardian actually took a leave of absence from her job so the girls could stay in their own home while they recovered.
There's always hope.

That's not all of it. Unfamiliar texture is a big piece.
But you can acclimate. I did it with blue cheese, which I used to hate. First time: just a bite. Second time, 3 bites, and so on. Eventually you get it, and then it becomes normal and you can even crave it.

There's a restaurant up here set up in what used to be a liquor store in not-the-greatest part of town. They don't have any tables or chairs, it's all take-out, but their fish is always fresh and I would eat catfish nuggets and fried okra from there any day of the week.

Sugar Pops, which are now called Corn Pops because Big cereal came under attack for cereal that was half sugar. So they kept them half sugar and changed the name.
I haven't had any in years because I eat too much of them and put on weight. I have less self control with sugar pops than with booze.

They gave me a flu shot while I was in for my heart attack three weeks ago so this probably isn't the flu but I feel like crap. It started as a head cold thing a week ago but now it feels bronchitis like. I'm working on coughing up both lungs and my chest is starting to hurt a tiny bit. I see the cardiologist tomorrow, I'll try to get some good cough meds that work.....

My Dad had health issues for many years, and he was the worst patient ever. Was so hard on my Mom. However... he responded well to me. Realized that "wow, my daughter who can be as obnoxious as I am is good for bullying medical staff."
So.. if you have a child that has a personality like he has, that might be the child that he responds to, if he's not responding well to you. Old school men don't like to appear weak to their wives, but will sometimes accept help from their children.

Unfortunately, we're way past the tipping point where an overwhelming majority of them are in fact evil Fascists who want us on the Right subjugated, if not outright destroyed.
The few that aren't evil will be forced to choose, and when they do, it will be their for their side. So in the end, the results are the same.

Braunschweiger is amazing.

It's not even that, you've got a coalition of the complicit, the misinformed, the hysterical, the dependent, the power-mad and the fearful.
Some of those concerns can be addressed and some of them can't.
The reason things are so hateful in politics is, largely, to keep people from being persuaded.
A lot of people just operate on prejudices and peer pressure and absorbing what the MFM and social media tells them. They are only invested to the extent of habit and their peer culture.

It's my dad. No one is quite like him. He will occasionally adjust his behavior if one of his grandspawn gets worried. But half the time he just digs in his heels and won't budge. Last yr he was very ill wouldn't eat, wouldn't listen, wouldn't go to the doc, and just in general being shitty with me to the point where I just couldn't take it anymore. I wound up telling Thing One and Thing Two, "Done. He is being hateful to me so you guys deal with our father for a while" Pappy got over his grump but he definitely can put the mayhem in Pappymayhem.

I feel your pain. My dad was the exact same way. So stubborn and phobic of doctors that he ruined his health and was disabled for almost 15 years before he passed away. I think his biggest regret was that he did not take care of his health; not because it hurt him, but because it hurt my Mom and I (I'm an only child.) He spent most of that 15 years grumbling but let us take care of his health and we did a pretty good job I think. But it was super rough, with lots and lots of arguing.

There's a story in the national news about some teenager who beheaded another teenager. They showed video of the murdering little shit. You took one look at him and think, yep, can see him doing it. He had the biggest head of Bozo the clown hair you ever saw, probably 3 feet across. Honestly, I don't know how his mother could get through the day without slapping him. Good brands are miles beyond canned tuna, you can use them in the same recipes. Not so good brands, the neighborhood cats won't touch them.
I get kind of icked out eating a whole fish like I'm f'ng Gollum or something, so I do a tapenade with olives, good sardines, and some grated gruyere and just mash it all and eat it on crackers. Highly recommended.

I have two brothers, Thing One is older, Thing Two is younger. Thing One travels a bit for his job and Pappy always seems to have some major health issue when One is out of the country. He was supposed to leave for Turkey last weekend, but got postponed until next sunday..
We all get along and since Mom passed away in 2009 we all look after our delightful but stubborn Pappy. For 3 yrs in a row he had a major health situation in May. Hospitalized in May every yr for three yrs. in a row. We told him we would just haul him off the hospital on May 1 and tell them to call us if he was okay on June 1. The next yr, he didn't need hospital in may but wound up in the e.r. twice in june and again in july which kept him in for about 3 months. When he got carted off tonight we were basically saying hey it isn't may yet and started the betting on what the problem would be. We all called the ribs, I got the pneumonia, and we all missed the gallstones and cyst thingys. We are a weird family.

Apart from language practice, came across a puzzling apparent truth. You mount the spike bayonet on the Mosin-Nagant rifle with the little elbow/bend *up* ..... but this blocks the sights, so I don't get it. Just tried to put the bayonet on one of my Mosins yesterday for the first time, seemed impossible that the up position was correct.
Yet in the film footage there are dozens of Red Army soldiers with their bayonets fixed that way, and dead Red Army soldiers in the German footage - same thing. Seems conclusive.

A major city. Sixty percent of precincts do not have agreement between the two basic metrics meant to show accuracy of count and integrity of the vote.

The Moisin Nagant model 1891 was meant for use up to 1000 meters (arshans = paces) in volley fire, and one of the best selling points originally is that it would be accurate at that range if used against massed cavalry charges, and the bayonet would be best fixed at the last minute to make a hedgehog before the cavalry got home.
Something that long with such a long bayo is unwieldy, and like using a short pike, the best action is to jab it forward like a pool cue - so I am told.
The spike bayonet is not good for slashing, just poking.
I wonder if the armies that used a blade bayonet had a greater history of infantry against infantry actions, as opposed to the Russians who historically dealt with the light horse of the Mongols and Turks, and other Steppes raiders.

Including that these spike bayonets (I think that's the term) are definitely for poking, not slashing. Edges aren't that sharp on the sides, but the tip is reasonably business-like.
And with the bayo mounted the sucker is about 6 feet long, or seems it. "Unwieldy" is an understatement.
Yet in this WWII footage, Red Army troops are clearly fairly close to the action have them mounted. Fog of archive footage, in peace-time!

I believe there were whole rifle divisions (strelkoviye diviziyi) armed with sub-machine guns (PPshas) - which is incredibly cool - but obviously specialized for urban/close combat. In any other situation you'll want the power and range of a Mosin or other battle rifle. And it was the only one available in large numbers.

The French believed that the bayonet should always be mounted in action for morale, and this caused problem in WWI when the war went static in the trenches.
The Berthier rifle was a design improvement over earlier rifles, although it was a beautifully engineered rifle with full French styling, it was long and had a long bayonet with that fashionable hook on the quillion that apparently was designed for catching in concertina wire and was probably a delight going over the top on ladders too
Subsequent models dropped the fancy quillion on the bayonet and later the parts that stuck out, and as the war ground on the rifle was modified to a five (!) shot en-block clip and shortened to a carbine model for handyness in the trenches.
The French also liked the stabby bayonet design.
Since a lot of their history was also dealing with cavalry, I wonder if that wasn't a driving force in that design too.

If you have a rifle that has a bayonet included, and ever feel the need to extend or attach the bayonet, you will notice that the result looks and feels sort of like a halberd ... but isn't.
The stock really isn't properly shaped for a chopping motion. The risk of unseating the barrel & receiver from the stock is much too high; it's almost guaranteed on rifles with no barrel band at the fore end of the stock. Bending the barrel isn't likely, at least not with modern barrels, but there's a chance ... and a functional rifle is very much more weapon than an edged weapon.
But, as a stabbing weapon, the bayonet-on-rifle has some merit. Reaching a rider on a horse is possible (and cavalry was a (minor) threat even in early WW2). I've talked to a few guys who were in Iraq; apparently there's a bit of a return to including edged and impact weapons when entering apartment buildings as there are occasions where the players are all very close and getting a shot off might take too long or might hit friendlies, but using a tire iron to whack an unfriendly is quick and reliable.

Of course most casualties inflicted by direct small arms fire in WWII was at fairly short range - 150 yards and less. But a sub-machine gun was obviously not in play until fairly short ranges.

it was a long time ago, but i believe that they even mentioned it during the short portion of Infantry school devoted to such things, most as a "now, don't ever do this" sort of thing, with the obligatory nudge nudge wink wink...

And the EMT has no content, so they should just write an automated job to create a new thread at a certain fixed time. There is even a program, cron, that can be configured to kick off a job at a particular time.

Did the American Community Survey last night. Put it off as long as I
could but I was starting to gt weekly notices. Page after page of
detailed, intrusive questions that help the govt decide what is best for
us. Especially fun is the focus on race/ethnicity. I filled out the
whole damned thing for our family , more or less accurately, by hand in
my chicken scratch style. With a few errors scratched out and corrected
to clarify. Somebody will have fun plowing through that. Especially the
part about my wife being part South American Indian mixed race
Quechau-Guarani-Spanish. Kids described as just white (which they are)
hopefully will further confuse the issue

The CoC used to do those every year where I grew up. The put the results in a book and sold it to the merchants downtown. My mother threw them in the trash.
