Dick Cheney On Donald Trump

The man is a serious thinker, and his impression of Trump's first days as the President-Elect matches mine, which makes me, by the transitive property of thinking, a serious thinker.

But the second comment is just so awesome....

Cheney To CNN's Barbara Starr: Trump Took Us To Point Where We Don't Need You Guys Anymore

I think he needs to be careful but he'll learn as he goes along. I think he is putting some brains and good people with him. I am a big fan of Mike Pence. I know Mike well from his 12 years in the House and I think he's a great choice as Vice President. He's going to play a major role. I think Mr. Trump is taking very, very seriously the job that he has gotten now. Staffing up the administration.

I think one of the reasons people get so concerned about the tweets is it is sort of a way around the press. He doesn't have to rely upon, uh, rely upon -- this is the modern era, modern technology. He's at the point where we don't need you guys anymore.

I have to be careful to separate Trump's typical blustery, chaotic pronouncements from his actions. And I am cautiously optimistic based on his few concrete actions.

I've tried that and getting the lefties to cite "facts" rather than just feelings. They can't do it and they quickly just descend into name calling.

Works every time it's tried.

12 Status quo foreign policy stalwarts will be the last ones to come around but already seem to be bending a little. Winston Lord described Trump on the one hand as "impulsive" and "ignorant", but on the other said he thought a measured reaching out to Taiwan would be a good way to begin to reign in expansionist China.

13 In Austria the "far right candidate" lost today (ceremonial post of the presidency).

From the BBC story on the news: "France, the Netherlands and Germany all face elections next year in which anti-mainstream and anti-immigration parties are gaining ground."

You see, opposing an unplanned, unwanted, indefensible instantaneous importation of huge numbers of (mostly) unaccompanied young males who lack any cultural or language tools for self-sufficiency or even assimilation is "anti-immigration".

Won't even guess what "anti-mainstream" is supposed to mean, but will enjoy that one (first time I've seen it), and note that it is the equivalent of "anti-good stuff that we like and people like you SHOULD like, and stuff, or something".

16 Willowed on the book thread, carried forward here, just because (marginally topical):

"Frodo cast about, considering his options. How he wished to return to his hobbit hole in the Shire, but it was too late for that. Oh how he sorely wished to curl up right where he was with a nice pipe of tobacco and a footstool for his hairy feet, but there was no time for that. The only option, he decided, is to continue forward, for that is the way I am already heading.

There, in the forest before him was the Great Unknown, the Beast that devours All Things, the Hag of Chappaquadorafirn. With his tiny sword held bravely before him in his trembling hand, Frodo inched cautiously toward the Beast. Much to his surprise, he saw a tear rolling down her cheek, clinging to her puffy jawline before tumbling through space to splash on the mossy ground. "Why do you cry so, oh Hag of the Woods?" Frodo asked.

"Alas" replied the Beast. "I shall never be President!"

18 A soggy good morning from the Texas Gulf Coast, y'all.

I didn't watch the Sunday morning political bitchfests this morning, so thanks CBD, for the update.

Cheney has more substance of thought in the turds he flushes in the morning, than the whole democrat party, combined.

Add a fingernail clipping from his little finger, and he out thinks the media, too.

How 'bout adding Cheney to the rotation of Press Secretary of the Week? He could keep reminding them of the fact that "we don't need you guys, anymore".

21 there is hope, and maybe people will quit calling Trump ignorant/scattered/childish quite so often, if they look at what has really been done.

... the Lakoff guy that was largely behind "you didn't build that" also thinks Trump is very good at communicating. As a liguist he breaks down his style, but of course claims it is all to deceive us, because Lakoff is also wears the hat of a progressive propagandist.

Lakoff himself is the one using the "dog whistles", like his use of AK-47s, while stating civilian carry laws are wrong, and citizens were only allowed muskets for fighting the Brits. But his linguist observations are interesting.

and I found this analysis of Lakoff by zombie at PJ in 2012, enlightening as well, and applicable to how they use language to push their narrative.

22 Have said it before: the mindless hysteria in reactions to Trump is not a phase, it's a definitive demonstration of the seriousness and intellectual caliber of those exhibiting it. If you don't judge those exhibiting it accordingly, you're just ignoring reality.

Which ties in to something else someone here said.

The bit about Trump being reckless and crazy and unstable and ...... eleventy!! This was a staple delusion of not just the airheads of the press or the NPR-listening cohort, but "right of center" sorts as well (ahemm, incl. rightcha here at the HQ).

I found this fascinating, well somewhat, and repeatedly asked for facts and information on which these near-hysterical concerns were based. What rash, destructive, important ACTIONS were in Trump's background? Not words, actions, involving important real-world matters.

Have yet to see even a weak or disingenuous attempt to even touch that simple, obvious question.

24 At the start of the primaries, my first choice was Scott Walker, then Rand Paul. But after that I was Trump all the way.

Initially, my support was strategic in that I thought that he had the best chance of winning the general election. This was at a time when virtually all the pundits and "experts" were certain that he would lose to Hillary in a landslide.

Yes, he did seem crude and boorish, like the Rodney Dangerfield character in "Caddyshack". I could see how that was off-putting to many.

But as time wore on, I found myself genuinely liking the guy more and more. The thing that made me really sit up and take notice was at the Iowa State Fair last year when he gave children rides in his private helicopter. I thought, "For a non-politician, he's really good at this." That little stunt sucked all the oxygen out of the room and made him the lead story.

And Scott Adams has been consistently right about him from the get-go. Among all the wacky and improbable events of this campaign, who would have thought that a cartoonist would turn out to be the most prescient political observer in the country?

It's been so long since the media has had to deal with an alpha male that they have no idea how to deal with it. Even better, between Pence's calm, thoughtful, unflappable manner, and Trump's take-no-prisoners, call-it-as-he-sees-it behavior, they keep the media completely off balance.

The press is not "dead", you cannot just "go around" them. This - in its over-simplified version - is the silliest right-wing death beast meme du jour.

Yes, of course, social media and the 'net give Trump and others skilled in their use new avenues to get word out, to correct slanders and lies, etc.

But the point is you still have to engage the massive, comprehensive, systematic distortion that constitutes "news" today. In detail, and relentlessly.

That's for the press secretary, and select cabinet members if they have the ability (like Cheney, and Newt, have demonstrated frequently). Trump can stick to Twatter-type zingers on occasion. But while helpful and novel, it does not mean the press is dead, or that the electorate is still not mostly toiling in a make-believe world of the press' creation. It is.

62 If we take Cheney's "He's at the point where we don't need you guys any more" comment as truth, or at least as emerging truth, what should the MSM do? And what WILL they do?

In the UK there are different newspapers for every political preference and market. Does the US MSM split with one or two rebels doing what Fox did before they lost the plot? Or does the herd mentality prevail?

And if YouTube and Twitter and FB decide they prefer the company of the herd and start to block this disruptor, then what?

I'm optimistic that out of all this winnowing, good things will result. But in the process, the dissonance will be epic. Minds will be changed, and people will come to their senses one at a time.

76 12 Status quo foreign policy stalwarts will be the last ones to come around but already seem to be bending a little. Winston Lord described Trump on the one hand as "impulsive" and "ignorant", but on the other said he thought a measured reaching out to Taiwan would be a good way to begin to reign in expansionist China.

Also, this is interesting: Trump didn't just make the MSM irelevent, he's beaten pop culture/celebrities. Heh

This year will be remembered for its toxic fluff. Provocateurs and
dime-store Howard Beales such as Seth Meyers, John Oliver, Lena Dunham
and Andy Richter have demonstrated zero political efficacy. If anything, we'll never know
how much their smugness ostracized potential allies and inflamed the
opposition's base. No one --- even the undereducated and marginalized --- enjoys being condescended to. And yet, part of the Democratic strategy
was to talk down to the citizens of America or to shame them into not
voting for Trump.

With respect, I think you're missing a critical piece. By going around the MSM he is providing an alternative viewpoint that underscores and highlights their day-to-day distortions. He is, in effect, providing long-needed competition to the MSM, so he IS confronting them, and in the process, undermining their credibility in the long term.

92 Ignoramus @63, precisely. Examples of what I'm talking about.

Reagan, on a host of important issues, prevailed despite the press; Dubya, on fewer but still key matters, also prevailed (for a time). But the impact of both was tremendously limited by the press and its stranglehold on the framework most Americans use to "understand" public policy.

Since then two trends: more "workarounds" or tools to conduct the fight (social media, internet), and ..... a dumbed-down electorate with instincts vastly different than Reagan-era "Reagan Democrats" (see: election and re-election of a preposterous nothingburger, Obama). One positive development, one disastrous trend that is the result of generational change and educational collapse/conversion.

Posted by: rhomboid at December 04, 2016 12:54 PM (QDnY+)

93 In the Obama years, MSM consolidated its messaging to an alarming degree. This was often co-ordinated through the White House with Favreau and Rhodes calling the tune, with Obama and Jarrett directing. The White House had great influence as it controlled access and made it easy for journolists to succeed by playing along.

So who takes this over? Center for American Progress? Obama in Retirement? Or does it diffuse?

Will Trump continue War with MSM, and add the power of the White House to his Mad Media Skilzz?

Won't even guess what "anti-mainstream" is supposed to mean, but will enjoy that one (first time I've seen it), and note that it is the equivalent of "anti-good stuff that we like and people like you SHOULD like, and stuff, or something".
---

Anti-mainstream is anything that does not adhere to the liberal agenda of all gay all muslim all the time.

Basically, we're supposed to want our nations filled with violent uneducated muslim men who want will rape our women, impose defacto sharia and, at the same time, require law abiding citizens to work to support them, since they *cannot* work.

The Powers that Be have declared that Islam is our new master, and that we must embrace uneducated, inbred violent half-wits so that their vision of a world without borders and national identities can come true.

Who could have predicted that Alpha Male and pearls went so well together?

Posted by: kallisto at December 04, 2016 01:24 PM (jkmtt)

157 I agree with Dick Cheney on several counts the first is: PE Trump, being, I think even he would admit, thrust unexpectedly into the position of becoming President has steeled him to the task at hand which is the correction of years of catastrophic mismanagement by the previous CEO, oops I mean President, wait maybe I meant CEO? In that respect he is, without a doubt already ahead of the rest of these lifelong politicians vying for there presidency who do not see it as the people's most sacred trust and a humbling and awesome responsibility, but rather the culmination of their own mad quest for power and/or a "deserved" title that justify's the aggrandizement of their own worthless political career. Thus PE trump is weighing options (appointments), taking stands Castro statement talking to Taiwan, etc. that are studied and calculated to these ends. He is precisely the tonic for decades of "insider" political class jockeying and SJWing in DC which is the last thing that everyone ( CA and NY and a few other idiotic blue states excepted) wanted.

Now ~ as to the press I agree that in this world we don't need any "filter" or journalistic self appointed "expert" telling us how to interpret the facts. Thus I would hope that the trend to simply bypass the mainstream press and do things directly to the people is the way to go. I will also expect papers like the Times to slowly but surely go out of business as they end their printed versions and go completely online and the become just one more site to get news from and disappear in the mass ~ with sites like this coming to the fore ~ sites where facts are rounded up posted and then a group of real folks (Horde!!) debate and have fun. You know a place where we are not lectured to ( OK maybe Ace doe lecture a little bit ~ but he let's you know when he is doing it ~ he doesn't present it as "news" or that he is being "objective " when he is anything but ~ like the Times does. That is the future.

Now let's see how he organizes the "White House Press Corps" or is that, as our current idiot president would say, "corpse"? If he simply disbands them as uneccesary in this day and age I will sit up and really take notice . . . of my never-ending schadenboner, that is (hey a guy can dream).

Btw speaking pf our idiot current president and the press corps ~ doe anyone remember him mispronouncing that word when he referred to the press corps ~ ? Did he only mispronounce it with the military rank "corpsman" and not with "press corps"? If so I think that explains a whole hell of a lot about OhBAHMuh dontchya think? Can anyone check to see if they can find him pronouncing Press Corps correctly?

Who were they?
They may at least be partially right. We should not be using "specific" tax breaks for companies. What we should be doing is reducing the corporate tax rate permanently for all companies. We have the highest corporate tax rate in the industrial world and that and excessive regulation is killing us in foreign trade.

Take any of the last 3 games (well maybe no the Iron Bowl) and remove two big takeaways by our defense, and give two to the opponent and we could well have lost. We have the undisputed best run defense, and a stable of running backs. The rest of this team is average, especially the secondary now with the injuries.

If I were a RINO in Congress, I'd be doing the following calculation: if Trump pulls off even a small fraction of what he's proposed, he's going to be popular as all hell, and his support would be worth its weight in gold come my next election.

Conversely, if I dig in my heels against him to curry favor with the Reds, I may be at risk of getting freight-trained in the next election, particularly if Trump campaigns for my opponent.

So on balance, I would conclude this was a good time to come to Jesus, just in case. If Trump screws the pooch, I could backwater later, if necessary.

"the end of Western democracy?" was his big fake concern today.

Why is Western democracy on the decline? Because of the rise of the right's populism in the US and Europe!

Apparently radical and reckless Leftism/Fascism is "western democracy" now and the center-right in the US/Europe (now considered "populism") is antithetical to Western democracy.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at December 04, 2016 01:56 PM (42Mgr)

I think you may have misunderstood Mr Cold Bear. He's pointing out that Cheney's sole somewhat heterodox (from a conservative point of view) political stance happens to be one in which he has a personal interest, same sex marriage. Charitably, Cheney could support SSM because his daughter's experiences have convinced him of the principle of the matter. Less charitably, he could support SSM because of varying degrees of personal or political interest (ie it is good for his daughter even if it is bad on principle, or it is politically expedient for him to reduce the stigma of homosexuality because he has a gay daughter). I tend to take the more charitable view, but it is not strange to note the exception to the pattern.

It's interesting that you bring up Ronald Reagan. I am also a Reagan fan, but he is partly responsible for standardizing no-fault divorce in the US (after his personal experience of divorce from Jane Wyman), which has had significant social consequences.
Enlightened self interest in economics and strict pursuance of the national interest in foreign policy are good policy lodestars. However, it seems that self-interest can be problematic in the social realm (from the conservative perspective). I do not wish to cast any aspersions on Reagan or Cheney, whom I agree are almost perfect, but I find the question of what constitutes principled self interest and how it can be differentiated from motivated self-deception intriguing.

This is because liberals have tied in the notion that self interest must come at the expense of others. You cannot just choose to want to keep more of your own money, because someone else could use those tax dollars for health care or whatever.

Everything is a zero sum game with them. This is why if the liberals of today were in the majority a million years ago, we never would have made communities in the first place.

Give me an example of one thing that Trump has said that was " stupid " in your opinion, and resulted in no net again for Team Trump.

I am seriously evaluating all of what he says and does and trying hard to avoid being caught up in wishful thinking.

But the stuff he says is accurate and honest, if painfully, brutishly honest.

Thread-winner for me. Trump did not just beat Hillary and globalist-Establishment-RINOs, he beat the Media. Whether out of intellect, quick learning or sheer dumb-ass luck, he went around the media while simultaneously dragging them around by the rings in their noses - or in Anderson Cooper's case, the rings in his crotchal area.
Trump Pwned The Media. They'll adapt, they are reflexively conditioned to believe their power is unassailable. We need to be keenly aware of the Democrats in Congress and their RINO comrades. I trust them 1/10th the distance I can throw the lot of them...
(As a dogleg, but related aside: If Hillary had been elected, the left/RINOs planned to ramp-up subtle and not-so-subtle controls ove the communications means that were used so well against them. That was the primary reason for Obama's faux, "Net Neutrality" move of placing the Internet under Title II regulatory controls as it gave government *VAST* new power to control nearly every aspect of the Internet.)

For instance, a worker leaving a job for a better opportunity is often a win-win, and labor market mobility creates wealth and dynamism. However, a spouse leaving a marriage for a better opportunity often creates at least one loser, and 'spousal mobility' can impoverish entire communities at scale. Social issues seem to present a lot of self-interest edge cases where the focus on _enlightened_ self interest becomes important.

401 There is no way any American company can compete with a manufacturer in 3rd world shit holes except with tariffs on those nations that are 3rd world shit holes, or we completely ditch honest republican government and adopt a 3rd world government which allows lots of bribes and law breaking.

The reason some of these American companies are leaving is not just taxes and regulations. If we ditched most regulations, and the corporate tax was 15% or 10% some of these companies would still leave.

Why? Because we still have a half way decent legal system, a constitution, a armed population, etc.

What some of these companies want is to pay workers $5 dollars a day, be able to dump all their waste in the local river, and if 50 workers die because of comically bad safety issues they can get another 50 workers. The 3rd world government can just be bribed for the rest, including some cheap slave girls for the boss and bumping off any one who complains about damage to their personal property.

Yes I am being over the top, but lets face it some countries and companies need tariffs to make up for the differences in the forms of governments.

Valid, but simply because they are complex does not mean they are wrong. A person in the situation you describe can say that while in the one aspect leaving their marriage may be on it's face the correct action, they may also see the ability to see their children and see to their well being is the more fulfilling outcome.

People make bad decisions, even when thinking altruistically. One could say that is THE mode of the left.

Thank you for reminding me! JJ Sefton and I were going to discuss this after the election. He is convinced that there is no place for tariffs anywhere ever from a conservative administration.

I kinda think that there may well be a need for , temporary, drastic measures, considering how far the economic pendulum has swung.

412 In 1988 a friend worked at the White House and was able to get me on the VIP tour list. They took us to the press room (the one you see on tv) and there was the podium the President speaks from. I asked "Can I ...?" Before I finished my sentence the guide said Yes you may stand at the podium. After I finished mugging at the podium in front of the big Presidential seal, I got down and saw an intern stuffing papers into a series of cubby holes, the kind you see in schools. I asked what he was doing. The guide said that every time the White House issues a new policy or changes an old policy, they write up a position paper and stuff it in the cubby holes assigned to the Washington Post, New York Times, etc.

You can guess how often these position papers get discusssed or mentioned in the media even though they are clearly given the information. Never.

Now the President doesn't have to give the position papers to the media and hope they transmit the information to the public. They can go straight to the public without the media. HAH.

454 Sweet, it was Eric Berry who returned that missed PAT.

It's his first career game in his hometown.

Sure am glad the Chiefs kept him.

459 Speaking of Kelce, I've heard that his reality show (a Bachelor-style matchmaking show) is horrawful.

What's funny is that when he's not in uniform I'd never guess he was a Pro Bowl tight end; he looks too skinny. I know that the TE position has evolved and they are much more functional as receivers, but still. He also looks metrosexual, while his brother who is an offensive lineman for the Eagles is burly with a beard and wild hair.

460 >.If Twitter kicked Trump out, couldn't he move to a competing platform> Wouldn't 20 million people follow him?

Once Trump is in office he will have the ability to schedule televised speeches and press conferences - lord knows Obama loved him some prime time speeches in his day. I would imagine that Trump would easily retaliate should Twitter get cute and ban him .

463 Famous Amos was hot stuff in the 70s, back when delicious luxury cookies were a new thing. Nothing tastes as good now as it did back in the day.

I lived out of the country for almost a decade - one of my first purchases when I got back was Hydrox cookies (soooo much better than Oreos, IMHO) and they'd changed the recipe while I was gone.

465 Trump sets up his own site and uses it to make announcements that would previously have gone to the press corpse. Oh, give them to the newzies too, but do the initial release at, say, 5am. That way we get to see it first thing in the morning before they have a chance to coordinate their lies. Make them spend their time scrambling to keep up. It would suck the air out of the evening newz shows.

488 "He's at the point where we don't need you guys anymore."

I confess this makes me nervous - not sure what will happen next in our country. But

(1) The media has fully abdicated their job to watch and inform.

(2) The entrenched political class had pretty much decided they didn't need US!

If either group had a little humility and had done their jobs correctly, we might not have Trump.
