Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread 12-03-2016Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get into a food fight on a Saturday afternoon. Unless you're hungry. “You cannot play at Chess if you are kind-hearted” Problem 1 - Black To Play (290) Hint: Black mates in 2 4k3/3p1pp1/p2Pp3/1pr2n2/5P2/1PP2qPK/P2B4/5RQ1 b - - 0 1 Problem 2 - White To Play (64) Hint: White mates in 3 The solution has multiple paths. Fill out the decision tree as much as you can.5b1k/5n2/4P1K1/6B1/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1 Problem 3 - White To Play (340) The word on the recently concluded World Championship chess match between Magnus Carlsen and Sergey Karjakin is that the games were monumentally dull. And the match itself was monumentally dull. Out of the 12 scheduled games, each player won a game and the rest were drawn. Things didn't get interesting until the tie breaking round. The tie-break time controls are considerably faster than the standard games, which allows players 100 minutes to make 40 moves, then 50 for the next 20. 3.7 Tie-breaksSo each player has 25 minutes, plus whatever 10-second move increments he can rack up, to complete the ENTIRE GAME. This can make for more interesting, exciting chess as the probability of inexact play from one player (or both) goes up considerably. Only then are crowd-pleasing combinations possible. For example: Karjakin 2R5/4bppk/1p1p4/5R1P/4PQ2/5P2/r4q1P/7K w - - 0 50 Carlsen After 49...Kh7 Karjakin 2R2bk1/5pp1/1p1p4/5R1P/4PQ2/5P2/r4q1P/7K w - - 0 50 Carlsen After 49...Bf8 Problem 4 - White To Play (33 Hint: White can mate in 5 5k2/5p2/2K2P2/p3Q3/1q5p/1P4p1/P7/5n2 w - - 0 1 ___________ Solutions Update Problem 1 - Black To Play 4k3/3p1pp1/p2Pp3/1pr2n2/5P2/1PP2qPK/P2B4/5RQ1 b - - 0 1 5b1k/5n2/4P1K1/6B1/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1 2.Bxg7+ Kg8 3.exf7# The second branch is: 1.exf7 Bh6 2.Bf6+ Bg7 3.Bxg7# (or 3.f8=Q#) Or, instead of 1...Bh6, Black can play 1...Bg7, in which case 2.Bf6 Bxf6 3.f8=Q# Problem 3 - White To Play Karjakin 2R5/4bppk/1p1p4/5R1P/4PQ2/5P2/r4q1P/7K w - - 0 50 Carlsen After 49...Kh7 51.Rh8# or, alternately: 50...gxh6 51.Rxf7# Either way, Karjakin's goose was cooked in 2. A nifty little combo by Carlsen. When I first saw this game, and how it ended, I wondered about why Karjakin played 49...Kh7, because it seemed like an obvious loser to me. If I were confronted with this position in one of my games, I most likely would've gone with 50...Bf8. Why? Because just *looks* like a better move to me. Of course, Karjakin didn't get to within a hair's breadth of the world championship by listening to me tell him how to play the game, so what do I know? Karjakin 2R2bk1/5pp1/1p1p4/5R1P/4PQ2/5P2/r4q1P/7K w - - 0 50 Carlsen After 49...Bf8 51.Rxf7+ Ke8 if 51...Kg8, then 52.Rf8+ Kh7 53.Qf5+ Kh6 (53...g6 54.Qxg6#) 54.Qg6# 52.Rf8+ Kd7 53.Qf7+ Kc6 54.Rc8+ Kb5 55.Qc4+ Ka5 56.Ra8# I'm guessing Karjakin most likely saw this line and rejected it. But the path he chose instead was brutally short. This line seems to have more "play" in it, even though it's ultimately a loser. And if you feed this position to your chess app and have it play Black, this is the line it will choose. Problem 4 - White To Play 5k2/5p2/2K2P2/p3Q3/1q5p/1P4p1/P7/5n2 w - - 0 1 4.Qg7+ Ke8 5.Qg8# An alternate path to mate instead of 4.Qg7+ is 4.Qh6+ Ke8 5.Qh8# See you all next week! ___________ Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app. ___________ So that about wraps it up for this week. In other news, No Man's Sky is off the hook in the UK; their advertising didn't lie, according to the standards at the time. A link to some Oregon paper that I hope isn't "fake news" -
http://tinyurl.com/zsthz5k As The Know points out, those standards have been tightened up since NMS first got hyped everywhere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oe18ISdZe48&t=387s The UK standards org pointed out that you're apparently allowed to fib in an interview, just not in official advertising. Also, per the Guardian, Hello Games put out a new patch just two days before the ruling. http://tinyurl.com/jva3gj5 So maybe "I'll get to it manana" is acceptable as an excuse in software development. "This is the position after Karjakin's 49th move. See if you can find the CRUSHING combination Carlsen uncorked to win the game and retain his title."
Ah, excellent that you included this, OM! For those trying to figure it out who don't yet know the answer: Notice that Black is threaten to checkmate white in two different ways: Qg2 mate or Qf1 mate. Also, R-a1+ is extremely strong. So whatever white does, he has to ensure that he isn't checkmated the very next move. White can therefore either: a. Try to defend against the checkmate, or b. Make some kind of move that puts black in check, so black has to respond. If you take boith these factors into account, you will see that white only has a very few "candidate moves" -- there are on four or five moves that prevent immediate checkmate against his own king. So you just have to evaluate those four or five moves. Posted by: zombie at December 03, 2016 05:10 PM (jBuUi) 19

Appalled by what he calls toleration of the carnage resulting from the uncontrolled private ownership of guns, George Will wants to see the "embarrassing" Second Amendment repealed: The Bill of Rights should be modified only with extreme reluctance, but America has an extreme crisis of gunfire....Gun control advocates who want to square their policy preferences with the Constitution should squarely face the need to deconstitutionalize the subject by repealing the embarrassing amendment.[4] *from a Heritage report on the 2nd Amendment. In the abstract, I would think that you would believe in the 2nd amendment as a ward against tyranny would be MORE persuasive. How else, at the ultimate extreme, are people to be able to "petition their government for a redress of grievances" or separate themselves from a government that no longer has their best interests in mind? As a purely intellectual exercise (without the bleeding and the dying and the civil war) I would think that making sure the people have power in of themselves, would be a powerful conservative argument. The point I am trying to make is that this betrays a fundamental divergence of what government is supposed to be about, and the dangers of any government. If you're going to buy shitty beer, Miller/Coors is a better choice (from a political if not a taste POV) than Bud. Apparently the owner gave a large donation to the Trump campaign last summer and a Chicago bar owner has announced a boycott of Miller/Coors beers as a result.
The dickwad owner is going to see the remaining bottles of Miller Lite for $9 apiece and give the money raised to Planned Parenthood - in Mike Pence's name. The only time I ever drink Miller Lite is at Miller Park (I much prefer Leinies), but I feel like going out and buying a case of the piss water in retaliation. Our biggest political fault line is City v Country, with Suburbs jump ball. Attitudes about guns and the 2nd Amendment reflect this.
Stats about gun violence also reflect this. Red counties have gun homicide and gun shooting rates like Switzerland; blue counties have rates like Jamaica despite often having tough anti-gun laws. More states have adopted right-to-carry laws. Nearly 40, IIRC. If George Will got his wish to abolish the 2nd Amendment, this wouldn't change. Many live in a bubble. Hillary's running her campaign from hipster Brooklyn sure compounded this. Hillary really did believe that half of Trump's support was from Irredeemable Deplorables. Back in 1990, 87 people died in The Bronx Happy Land fire after a drunken guy lit gasoline near the entrance of the unlicensed social club to get back at his ex who was a hat check girl. All the other exits were blocked to stop people from sneaking in.
492 died in Boston's Coconut Grove night club fire back in the 1940s. Exits were locked to stop people from sneaking in, or leaving without paying. The only functioning exit was a single revolving door at the entrance, which stopped working as the bodies piled up. Like these other cases, we may see murder charges considered. If you'd like another reason to totes dismiss any word vomit coming from George Will, this quote from ole Georgey Boy should seal the deal:
To be fair, I read the original article from which the quote was taken. It was very short and very shallow. It didn't, for instance, explore how many attacks per year was deterred by possession of guns (even though he explicitly used the phrase "cost benefit analysis"). And then he says, Whatever right the Second Amendment protects is not as important as it was 200 years ago, when the requirements of self-defense and food-gathering made gun ownership almost universal. But whatever the right is, there it is. This "not as important" mindset is dangerous. "We're much more civilized now than we were then. We don't need guns". Yes, but what about now, when our government is flooding the land with illegals and radical Muslims? You can't deprive people of the right to protect themselves just because you have this feeling, this intuition that things are so much more different now, and that it is impossible to revert to a more dangerous state of existence. What happened under Obama I would have thought was unthinkable. And yet it happened. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at December 03, 2016 07:02 PM (rH4JY) 280

If you do corporate tax cuts right, it'll bring back a flood of money trapped overseas, and generally encourage corporate investment here rather than abroad.
If we do infrastructure privately with tax credit incentives, it won't be a permanent tax cut and the projects won't have government feather-bedding nor mandated union rates. Repealing ObamaCare can at least start to lower the health-care burden on hiring in the US. Getting the EPA out of torturing US businesses is help, along with deregulation generally. They truly believe that 'perception is reality'... so they believe if they can change how you perceive something... it will somehow change how the universe works... They acknowledge that reality is often unfair, or unpleasant, which can be noble. But then their way of dealing with it is not to change reality, but to *pretend* that things are the way they'd like them. Regarding problem 4: two fascinating aspect about the position itself
1. What I would suspect makes this a composed position is that white's K, Q, and two pawns are exactly positioned (including the king being at a knight's distance) such that black cannot check white's king with his queen (without white immediately capturing it), even though white's king is completely in the open. 2. White's queen is also fixed in place, as a queen move will either lose material, allow black to initiate a Q for Q exchange (leading to a white loss), or allow black to put white's king in check. Which is why it's only the pawn move that can tip the balance Posted by: civil truth at December 03, 2016 08:51 PM (t3LBb) 512
