Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Problem 3 - White To Play (340) The word on the recently concluded World Championship chess match between Magnus Carlsen and Sergey Karjakin is that the games were monumentally dull. And the match itself was monumentally dull. Out of the 12 scheduled games, each player won a game and the rest were drawn. Things didn't get interesting until the tie breaking round. The tie-break time controls are considerably faster than the standard games, which allows players 100 minutes to make 40 moves, then 50 for the next 20.
3.7 Tie-breaksSo each player has 25 minutes, plus whatever 10-second move increments he can rack up, to complete the ENTIRE GAME. This can make for more interesting, exciting chess as the probability of inexact play from one player (or both) goes up considerably. Only then are crowd-pleasing combinations possible. For example:
3.7.1.a If the scores are level after the regular twelve (12) games, after a new drawing of colors, four (4) tie-break games shall be played. The games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes for each player with an increment of 10 seconds after each move

When I first saw this game, and how it ended, I wondered about why Karjakin played 49...Kh7, because it seemed like an obvious loser to me. If I were confronted with this position in one of my games, I most likely would've gone with 50...Bf8. Why? Because just *looks* like a better move to me. Of course, Karjakin didn't get to within a hair's breadth of the world championship by listening to me tell him how to play the game, so what do I know?

56.Ra8# I'm guessing Karjakin most likely saw this line and rejected it. But the path he chose instead was brutally short. This line seems to have more "play" in it, even though it's ultimately a loser. And if you feed this position to your chess app and have it play Black, this is the line it will choose.

For those trying to figure it out who don't yet know the answer:
Notice that Black is threaten to checkmate white in two different ways: Qg2 mate or Qf1 mate. Also, R-a1+ is extremely strong. So whatever white does, he has to ensure that he isn't checkmated the very next move. White can therefore either:
a. Try to defend against the checkmate, or
b. Make some kind of move that puts black in check, so black has to respond.
If you take boith these factors into account, you will see that white only has a very few "candidate moves" -- there are on four or five moves that prevent immediate checkmate against his own king. So you just have to evaluate those four or five moves.

I don't think my grandparents felt in the 70's they way we feel today. Carter was horrible. But we didn't have the widespread SJW/media/academia that we have today. It was still in it's infancy back then.

See, I have a different view. In the abstract, I would think that you would believe in the 2nd amendment as a ward against tyranny would be MORE persuasive. How else, at the ultimate extreme, are people to be able to "petition their government for a redress of grievances" or separate themselves from a government that no longer has their best interests in mind? As a purely intellectual exercise (without the bleeding and the dying and the civil war) I would think that making sure the people have power in of themselves, would be a powerful conservative argument.
The point I am trying to make is that this betrays a fundamental divergence of what government is supposed to be about, and the dangers of any government.

Usually carry concealed here in AZ. (IWB) Last coupla days had jacket off and out and about in dept. stores, so...open. I find myself keeping arm over gun. In my head someone may grab at it. I also think, 'this is stupid I'd be the first to go so can't help myself or anyone then.' I'm just paranoid but not sure purpose of open carry tactically really and I see it here.

It seems to be a thing with the left to demean the people who came before. I think it was in the late 90's, I remember hearing Seth McFarland go off on a tear about how people in the 19th century were all "just not that bright." It pretty much killed Family Guy (aside from the constant ramping up of shilling for the dems) for me.

Nooo. They do come frozen harder than a vulcanized hockey puck but the are cooked on a giant griddle top with an equally giant grease trap on the side. That trap had to be cleaned every night because every night it was full.

It is not just that, most of these singers are crap. I think a reason a lot of them use auto-tune is that their voices are not very strong, or rich.

They acknowledge that reality is often unfair, or unpleasant, which can be noble. But then their way of dealing with it is not to change reality, but to *pretend* that things are the way they'd like them. So in other words they try to force people into confessing that Lena Dunham and Leslie Jones are smoking hot goddesses.

When I moved to NYC from Louisiana I asked someone where the closest Washateria was located. They looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. I never have been able to call them a laundromat unless I think specifically beforehand.

I have tried to make my own hamburgers at home, and they are absolute crap compared to what I can buy at any fast food place. No contest.
Have you tried loading the hamburger up with Lawry's Seasoned Salt before cooking?
Fast food burgers are Loaded with salt, so that might help.

1. What I would suspect makes this a composed position is that white's K, Q, and two pawns are exactly positioned (including the king being at a knight's distance) such that black cannot check white's king with his queen (without white immediately capturing it), even though white's king is completely in the open.
2. White's queen is also fixed in place, as a queen move will either lose material, allow black to initiate a Q for Q exchange (leading to a white loss), or allow black to put white's king in check.
Which is why it's only the pawn move that can tip the balance

After the last cow was milked then clean up began. I remember the strainer pad always had about a quarter inch of cow shit and other filth. Of course the milk was pasteurized when it got to the milk plant, so all was fine.

I have a friend who makes his own tomato juice. Just crushes tomatoes in a colander by hand and collects the pulpy juice. He freezes it and consumes it over the winter.
